What's more of a crime: modding a perfectly good Cuda for Pikes Peak, or letting it rot in a field, quietly returning to the earth? Thumbs up to this guy for driving the wheels of the thing, like it was made to do. I rest my case.
+CMDR Boom driving the wheels of it? No sliding, no drifting, not the slightest complaint out of the tires. It's not a treacherous climb when you drive it like your grandmother. I did the road to Mt Evans which is higher than this in a VW van!!!
Sounds like youre just jealous you dont have a pikes peak Cuda, most idiots dont realize that sliding around corners mean YOU LOSE TIME. Drifting around pikes peak would make a great show, but youd be about 20-25mins for the run, nowhere near fast enough.
i agree he'd not pushing it thru the corners
+816Airsoft drifting is not nessisaryly about the time
CMDR Boom he'll yeah cudas are overpopulated anyway I'll tell you what's a crime, demoing a c body
"But, they were built to drive. They weren't built to sit in museums."
Amen, this is how I feel every time someone talks about how someone "ruined" a car by driving it or by modding it for hard driving/racing. It's a car, not a rug - it's functional art, not looker art.
He's not pushing the car hard anywhere except on straight Road. You've evidently never watched anybody else race on this mountain. They drift the rear end around in sharp turns and leave clouds of dust and dirt from spinning tires under acceleration. on the pavement Parts the tires squeal and sometimes smoke and the rear end slides around. and if you're not doing that you're not trying hard enough. Other people crashed that were actually driving hard. ruts and bumps in the service surface are no excuse. have you ever watched cars race on a dirt oval? He acts like he's afraid to put a scratch on it. Do you not hear how long he has the clutch in in some of those downshifts which makes the car lug when he finally finds the right gear and tries to accelerate. You need mad road course skills to drive this Mountain. he doesn't know what he's doing. Of course he set a record with all of that asphalt in place of what was previously dirt. In almost every turn he didn't know what gear to be in. you know your engine you know what RPM it makes the most torque and what RPM it makes the most horsepower can you use the transmission to put it there. his breaking and shifting skills are atrocious, laughable!
***** I'm...really not sure what part of anything I commented you're responding to.
Carbon Crank the fuck dude ? yeah he is a horrible driver for not being reckless and risking a crash. Sucks that he drove with complete control and WON his class. What a dummy he is. Fuck your stupid, Carbon.
Unless you are Aladdin. Then your rug is functional art. :)
This right here. Storing a car in a museum forever will help it be remembered but driving it shows people WHY it's remembered.
Another great video from Hot Rod. My first car was a '71 'cuda 340/4bbl paid for with paper route and grass mowing money. Truly when asked the question, "which car do you regret not keeping?" that was it.
I can't count how many times I have watched this video. Every time I walk over that ledge. Those drivers have much bigger balls than I have Mad respect, guys!
That "cuda" engine, what a sound .........
I got to ride in this car with Jess one time when my brothers 70 Challenger broke, I had to plant both feet firmly in the floorboard in front of your seat, grab both straps of the seat harness and hang on as Jess put the car through the turns as hard as the car would allow, I'll never forget it. Jess is a great guy and so gracious to have let me have that experience., Thanks Jess!, and congrats on this win,....how cool is that!... couldn't have happened to anyone more deserving.
This was kind of an emotional win for those of us who are die hard MOPAR fans...
Congratulations guys!
He is absolutely correct when said "They were built to drive, and not sit in museums" My hat is off to you Sir for putting that Cuda through its paces! Well Done!
Way to go Jess, great job. You finally did it.. I used to work with this guy. He is a stand up guy, for sure. His whole team is. I have known Jess a long time. Even his wife Lisa is part of the team. I was watching last year when he took second. The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is a race like no other. This is the oldest race in America besides the Indy 500. The Unsers used to do this race every, among others. This is truly a testament to driving skills.
What everyone who criticizes today's hill climb participants doesn't understand is the racers didn't choose to pave the road. The Sierra club sued the city of C.S. and won to have it paved. True racers will adapt and race on any road in any vehicle.
Good for you man! Congrats on that win! Was glad to hear your "They were meant to be driven" comment. I've been a Mopar fan my whole life. There's that whole militant faction of guys who restore these cars with the intentionally sagging paint "Because that's how they came off the line in Hamtramck"! like that Worman twit. Glad you weren't afraid to take a torch to that machine!
" they were built to drive, they weren't built to sit in museums."
the truest quote about cars out there. This man has his head on straight,
"They were built to drive, they weren't built to sit in museums." Well put!!
The sound of this car is absolutely fantastic. I could listen to it all day.
I can listen to that engine sing all day! That is how you keep heritage running strong!
I almost got to see the car for half a second.
Hearing that engine was amazing. Aint nothing better than hearing it, and nothing else.
hot rod is by far and away the best show on motor trend :)
listening to this Cud'a run is like music for the soul. Go baby go.
That thing makes a beautiful freaking sound.
man this makes me smile to see the car driven like this.
Got to talk to Jess this year and he's an absolute legend!
The music stops right when it should! You guys are terrific!
3:20 Beautiful sound, and... New Hampshire baby! lol
That was cool to see a '71 Plymouth 'Cuda Kick Ass & Set a New Record at Pikes Peak. ! Thanks for the story Elena
!
WOW. That was awesome watching the whole race up the mountain.
I mean, look at those cars, they have racing and life written all over it, they MEAN something, they speak for themselves and for those who race them. It amazing that these machines can still be that top notch and sustain a race like Peaks Peak. Built with the heart and not with numbers.
this vintage class has balls for making these runs on such a dangerous track with old/ awesome cars
What a sound how could anyone not like this!
Always thought this would be such a kickass to do.
Grate video!
Who gives a shit? He has the right to drive his 'Cuda no matter who thinks it's to rare to drive. Keep driving that sweet 'Cuda Jess!
the reflection on that car is insane !!! props to the color sander
That's on my bucket list...to attend and race in!
That was amazing to watch. I have made the drive to the top of Pikes Peak before back in the seventies. Its a trip worth taking.
Watched the entire hill climb, so badass!
this has to be on my bucket list. Silver State Challenge and the Virginia City races too. Great video.
This episode was one of the coolest I have seen. I have been binge watching MotorTrend on TH-cam for the past couple days. I am a huge RoadKill fan. But this episode really captured the spirit of the muscle car and showcased a very cool race and a lot of heritage. I love the work MotorTrend does. Keep on keepin' on boys and girls. (always a fan of more mustang stuff [avid mustang enthusiast, and owner.])
epic video. love the sound of the 'cuda
love this guys attitude
Neither mine, Im still learning, my native language is Spanish, nice to chat with you and if you are a real petrolhead you will love those channels. Cheers from Guatemala
I don't believe I've ever commented here, but I originally built that car for the track and sold it to Jess. Looks like he's done some great work with it since. It was originally a 383 car, but I got it with a 340. I started by doing a ground up restoration, but eventually turned it into a road race car. I won a couple of class championships on road courses in the NorthEast before my new wife decided that I needed something slower :) I'd be a rich man if I'd kept every car I've ever owned. BTW, "MOPAH" was my plate.
You did a Great Job Frank. I hope you didn't run a passenger in it with the roll cage the way it is. I don't know how they got it through tech.
In Drift racing it's really cool to power slide around corners, and show off the skills to take it to the edge. However this man is showing respect for himself and passenger/navigator. I'
Thank you for forwarding this on to Frank.
Swede is smiling down on you...... Congrats
From what I can remember about the Plymouth Barracuda, it was built to sit in the repair shop, suffering from chronic overheating.
The car is a true BS23N code '71, 'Cuda. According to the records, it started life as one of 71 built with a 383 and a 3 speed manual tranny. The scheduled build date was 4-26-71. It now has a built small block and an aluminum case 4 speed and a 4.30 gear in back.
Stunning.
It's your car do what you want with it! I like what you have done!
AWSOME! way to go Jess and krewe!
That was great. Thank you for sharing :)
this looks so much fun.
This is what every car should sound like
Way to go Jess and Lisa! Great job. Hope to see you back sometime will all the Mopars at Spring Fling Speed Festival at Willow Springs.
gotta love the sounds of that engine!
I can't wait to do this!!!! I've been working on my 17 charger 392.
agreed! That was one of the coolest aspects of the track...
awesome car, awesome video. great coverage of a classic event!
Congrats. That is a real win.
Excellent answer. A squealing tire is a happy tire, and a squalling is unhappy!
Probably my favorite old school muscle car. Can't wait for the new Cuda to debut. Cool episode.
congrats, jess and morgan! awesome to watch and celebrate with you! Mopar rules!
The sound was most likely from the Zoom that was in the car, which is a light-weight professional recording instrument. It is difficult to get something as loud as this 'Cuda to sound good through anything at close range. Elana is an encyclopedia of information on these old muscle cars, did a fantastic job capturing the feeling of the race week, and did a great job narrating the experience. These are kind, professional, talented people you are criticizing.
Amazing!! Love that this guy is so much like me! The car is meant to drive!!!! Car looks sweet, sounds angelic, and they got the win!! Can't wait to meet this guy.... am planing on going to Pikes in the next 3 yrs with my sons and daughter, and do a short film! ( and bring my Ducati)
robert Burks, we also have a facebook page. Look for Team Cuda.
Anyone else think the engine sounds like Bullit when he shifts?
Cool episode!
i can't believe they paved the whole track! i hope they start new record books! takes the challenge out of the race...
Very cool! I would love to see vids like this on some of the other classes too!
Elana, this segment came out really neat! Good to see things are working out well for you at Hot Rod. Nice way to kick off your video hosting.
wow that was wonderful! eargasm :)
Car sounds AMAZING
What's funny is that the Cuda was like a "poor mans challenger", while now it's rarer and more desired.
I love this. i wish there were move events like this around. No one around here understands wju o dont just build my truck to be rly fast in a straight line... cus id rather be able to do things like this! its nice to be able to drive your car and that includes turns.
Very nice run!
The best engine sound in the world.
great video loved it and no music playing thank you. love to hear that horsepower.
Sounds sooooo good
i love this sound!
Wow the edges are scary! Those are some steep drops!!!
Great video!
What a stunning run! Such driving skill! And people say muscle cars are irrelevant anachronisms which don´t handle bends...
YESSSSSSSSSS the '71 CUda is a BEAST
lol. He presses the clutch on almost every corner. Somebody teach him how to drive with a stick. This is hilarious
my all time favorite muscle car. doing the right thing!
Sounds very wicked!
Any real car enthusiast you mean. when he said "it's meant to be driven" I almost yelled "THANKYOU!!!" loud enough to wake my neighbors. It's just so aggrevating to see a beautiful car PARKED to save it's beauty when we all know it looks 10X better going down the road. Even if it is only at 65.
I remember the day that Dad raced (for over an hour) up this road. He drove us all the way to the summit above the clouds in a 64 chevy PU. This road was never paved, all dirt at the time, in 1969.
BTW, Mopars Rule and I drive the crap out of mine too!
interesting driving, goes on every corner holding the clutch
Clean driving! Congrats
Who's got two thumbs and just spent 13:00 with chills? THIS GUY! lol
From the old pics I've seen, the old 'Cuda looked the same as the Challenger as well; again, with a remodeled front end. It makes sense, since both cars were based on the same platform back in the 70's.
best video and thing to do ever.
good story. love the car. damn nice!
that mopar is sweeeet music to my ears!!
ALL OF A SUDDEN IM IN LOVE WITH CUDAS!! X] GREAT VIDEO
Thats cool and sounds like a great time
what more can you say Pikes Peak a Mopar a engine on song for 12 minutes and 3 seconds and a new record holder do not mess with the Mopar man he wins every time well done thanks for sharing and giving it what fore thank you
I love the sound of a Mopar on open headers...
Ahhhhh. So awesome.
Thing of beauty
Beautifull Cars !!!
Why would anyone not like that guys mods to his Cuda? It still has it's stock look, and the decals are nice and clean, not over the top. And that sound.... you all know what i mean.
This race is definetly on my to do list. It would be awesome to do it in a 1978 GMC 2500 truck with a Chevy Crate 572.
