Dyno-Tuning the Draguar's 696 Horsepower Supercharged Small Block Chevy! - HOT ROD Unlimited Ep. 35

  • It's time for motor mayhem! On this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited we head to Westech Performance Group with Mike Finnegan to dyno-tune a new engine for the Draguar, the 1974 Jaguar XJ12 with a small-block Chevy under the hood that he and Freiburger bought for $1,000 and installed a supercharger onto in a parking lot during episode 7 of Roadkill. After the supercharger upgrade the guys road-tripped the dilapidated car from San Francisco to Sacramento for a drag race. With the summertime air temps hovering around 113 degrees, the worn out 350 overheated and Freiburger only managed to run a 15.30 ¼ mile ET at Sacramento Raceway.
    Looking for redemption, Freiburger ordered a new 383ci long block from Blueprint Engines, a definite upgrade over the old powerplant. Though the new longblock is only rated to 600hp it features forged pistons and rods and a forged crankshaft, which means that the guys can turn up the boost and make double the power of the old engine. The engine effortlessly made 650hp with 91 octane fuel in the tank but Finnegan was feelin' froggy so he added 118 octane race fuel and upped the boost to 15 psi in an attempt to make 700hp with the 383. Did the engine leave the dyno shop in one piece? Check out the video to see!
    The engine we used is a BluePrint Engines' 383 Long Block designed for power adders:

    As a UK Jaguar owner myself, this is really good fun to watch. I'm looking to get a series 3 myself and swap out the motor with the 4.2 super V8 from the later XK, and do an interior refit from the X308.
    Great episode and thumbs up from the UK!!

      That's a great idea - (although the Series 3 interiors are very nice already) did you do it?

    I'm no hot rod guy, and still, this is the best most awesomeest channel Motor Trend has to offer. The hosts, the projects, the eye-candy parts, the production values...I can hardly wait for the next one. All those who produce these, have a lot to be proud of. I envy you guys for getting paid to have this much fun. Great work. Love it.

    Finney said forged, not Ford. It's a BluePrint 383 crate engine with forged internals and aluminum heads. It's BluePrint's Power Adder Engine, with compression at 8.5:1 - Jesse K.

  • @MotorTrendWatch
    @MotorTrendWatch  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The engine is $5,300 and the blower with carbs is around $3,000. So total it's around $8,500, depending extras like headers and ignition. - Jesse K.

      crazyfvck - He has dyno tested a load of those engines with a near identical setup. The 383 Chevy has been one of the more common stroker engines for several years. It's a 0.30 over 350 with a 400 spec crank.

    I'm British and love Jags, the 'DragWar' pronunciation sounds perfect to me, I like it as it suits the theme of the Jag: the American take on modification, carry on!

    • @Brock_Landers
      @Brock_Landers 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They took the best that the UK had to offer and injected some good old 'Merican horsepower...hands across the sea...gotta love it! Actually, the small block 350 swap into that model Jag is very common on this side of the pond. Why you ask? Because let's face it, British Leyland wasn't very well known for their reliability...right? Not to mention that parts for Jags here cost an arm and a leg...if not two.

    I own a '72 XJ12. Spent a few years in a field, I restored it when I was 17-18, and it's done me good ever since. That's 8 years of 41 year old, reliable, daily motoring, frequently over 1000 miles a week. I've driven it across Europe, and the USA. It's a reliable, usable, daily car. Yes, it needs more maintenance than some cars, but it's a big, luxury car. The payback is the beautiful ride and driving qualities. Of course, if you don't maintain it, it'll shit out on you, but that's YOUR fault.

    If you say the Jag V12 wasn't a performance engine, you have to say for the Euro versions about 150mph for the XJ12 and 155 for the XJS isn't bad for a non performance engine. Remember their quoted hp was not the old SAE system. Later XJ12's were 6 litres by the way. The engine wasn't fragile, rather often the sensor that turned the electric fans on were crap.

  • @TheWierdFish
    @TheWierdFish 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Of course, but, well maintained, they break no more frequently than any other car, and have the added bonus that the engine itself (which is the expensive bit) is almost entirely bombproof. Both the XK and V12 are very reliable engines when maintained correctly. Done right, you can easily drive even an XJ12 thousands of miles a month, every month, every year, all year round. It's as reliable as a modern car, and when it does start to go wrong, you can fix it easily!

It's going to make some good reliable power, but it's just going to be hampered by that rear gear. You need AT LEAST a 3.73 or better to go with that upgraded drivetrain. PLEASE!?
