It is. And those kit cars you build you end up actually driving because if you break something (crack a header, blow a starter motor, et cetera) getting spare parts is insanely cheap, you can buy them anywhere there's a parts store (like AutoZone/NAPA), and fix it yourself in a parking lot. Whereas a Lambo has to go to a dealer, that starter motor probably costs $1000 and costs half as much to install.

Factory 5 is awesome, these are nice track and street cars for the average guy to build, enjoy, and drive the crap out of them! Not like the ORIGINAL cars, whom never breaks free of their velvet ropes!! Fantastic news that the Lamborghini and all the engineering into it can be matched with a kit based car, now that is bang for the buck!!!!! I want one too!!!
That has been a common question, but we were also working with the great guys at Ford Racing, so we wanted all the test cars to be powered by blue-oval engines, the GTM is LS powered. We DEFINITELY have to do a comparo between a well-built GTM and another modern supercar. Thanks! Dave Smith
A lot of people are missing the point here. Yes, you could spend 5 times as much and buy a GTR, or twice as much for a Challenger Hellcat. And at the end of the day you have a great car. Or you can spend 30K (yes, you can build any of these cars for that little) and build your own car and have the unique satisfaction that brings. Until you have done that it can be hard to understand why it makes it so special.
Amen brother, after you build your entire vehicle once, driving a "turnkey racer" like a GTR or something just sounds impersonal and lame. I mean, if you win, you really have no reason to be proud, other than the fact that you saved your pennies lol!
08turboSS What labor? You pay yourself for labor? The truth is, you can easily pick up a FFR in various stages of being finished for half the cost of the kit. Or you can just buy the kit, head on down to the junk yard and pick up a wrecked Fox body for a song and take it home, strip out the running gear, drop it into your kit car, and by the end of the year you have a damn nice example that might not run circles around everything at the track, but you'll enjoy it more than any of them are enjoying theirs. Besides, cars like these you can actually drive anywhere. I'd take a FFR kit car anywhere in this country because I know if the starter craps out, or the clutch, or the flywheel, or the axle, or any other mechanical part, a new one is as far away as AutoZone or the dealer and it'll cost me 10% (or less) of that same part on a Lambo or Ferrari or the like. But I get your point, to build one of the ones shown would be closer to $50k. That's still a damn sight cheaper than the Lambo shown, and any of these kit cars will be easier to drive (think width), to park, and a fraction of the cost to operate.
I honestly cannot decide which I like best. I love the cobras but the daytona and 33 ford are beautiful. I would probably get the 33 ford my self. It looks mean.
You see, that all depends on the builder. I Just finished my GTM and registered it here in Poland and packed in a normal amount of sound deadening. My "Kit car" is more refined than my uncle's 2008 VW Passat. There are almost no vibrations over rough roads. And I mean "Polish" rough roads, so more or less dirt/cobble stones with a bit of asphalt here and there..
What Factory Five is doing is amazing. By all accounts the kits are well engineered and of good quality. I was surprised that it was the hot rod that beat the Lambo but the other cars were close. Good stuff.
The rental school driver was also a Pro BUT he knew the track (1000's of laps!) so the advantage was really to the Lambo. My dad is working on a Factory Five GTM Supercar currently. It looks amazing! You just have to be willing to put in the time. Factory Five told him that it would take about 500 man hours to complete it!
Probably been said before in the 800 comments, but it was mentioned that the Mk4 Summit powered car did not have much weight in the back. Most FFR Mk4 have about 52% of the weight on the rear axle. The engines sit way back in the chassis.
It was actually a pretty fair fight. The Lambo ran near-race tires and we ran toyo's but the Lambo driver KNEW the course and the Hot Rod driver didnt. THAT is a HUGE advantage. After the Hot Rod driver Esses learned the track (towards the end of the day and after filming) he ran a 51 sec time in one of the FFR cars.

Simply put, it's easy to build and drive a Factory Five in "Kalifornia". Cheers. Dave Smith Factory Five
The 33 Ford was my favorite from the start and I was overwhelmed when it beat the Lamborghini. Factory Five and Hot Rod - this episode has gone straight into my favorites.
Your name and your comment made me smile. He definitely didn't have the Tesla S and the Fisker in mind when making that statement. They both kinda do pretty well in the torque=acceleration vs HP department :) As far as petrol vs diesel goes I would tend to agree with you. Up to a certain point of course.
the base price on the 33 is $19,990 for the complete kit not a bad deal seeing that when you'r done you have a great handling ride for a fraction of the price of a super car !
I tossed the guys the keys to the FFR cars and they spent the whole night cruising with the cars. The video time is fairly brief, but I agree, next time we'll try and do something with the cars more on the street! Dave Smith
Doing this in Vegas really showed why they did this in the first place. The point is simply that, while they are definitely in different markets, the cars that you can build at home can not only keep up with much more expensive cars, but they can also turn heads just as easily. Driving up and down the strip will get you as many looks as you will get with the lambo. Especially from 60 yr old dudes.
I think it illustrates that technology has made "build-it-yourself" cars able to perform at very high levels. The "Kit cars" of the 70's deserved their reputations. I personally think it is a very big deal, that our customers may lack the money to buy a Lambo, but our currency is car-building skill and that gets you just as much performance experience without the rich-guy-only price tag. Dave
Taylor, I was there and the times are quite legit. You are welcome to visit the Factory here in Massachusetts and I'll take you out in the red Mk4 or the blue Coupe and you'll be convinced. Dave Smith, President Factory Five Racing
Built a couple 20 years ago and they've gotten better. I'm surprised they're even in business, proof that it's The classic roadster. Half the weight, twice as fast!
Great comparison i personally like the kit cars better because you can build them your way, they cost less, and they don't have to follow the same rules as a manufacturer car.
GTM is a bit different then these, as it's basically just a Corvette with a new skin and the engine pushed to the rear. And it's not as popular as the Daytona and especially the Cobra kits (probably because you need to a source a Corvette donor car, whereas the Cobra/Daytona you don't really need to source a Fox body for donor parts anymore like in the early days).
RandomTXDude210 I don't think that's a fair assessment of the GTM. It's a mid-engine sports car that has very little in common with the Corvette. Yes it uses Vette components but it's an entirely different chassis under there. Not a re-skin.
Emily Elgarresta I get your point, wasn't trying to make it sound like a re-skin. But I stand by my point that it is, basically, a Corvette under there. True, it's a chassis up build, but all the parts that matter, aside from the chassis and the transaxle, are C5 vette parts. The engine and suspension and brakes, plus a lot of the interior parts, are all Corvette, and that's why it's such an awesome car. The engine being pushed back helps it beat the 'Vette in the corners, but also makes it a little bit more dangerous in the twisties (as anyone familiar with mid/rear engine cars can attest). I'd still much prefer one of these to a Corvette in nearly all respects. But I'd much rather build a Daytona (and would much rather build one of these than a Shelby). I've seen these GTMs tricked out, and they are stunning, except the interiors (unfortunately). Even the show quality ones I've seen just had lackluster, boring interiors. I suppose one could go all out and drop some serious money/time making that interior something special.
Justin LF "... and the engine pushed to the rear." Which is what it is. He was alluding to the idea I was saying it was just a Corvette with a new skin only. It's a Corvette with a new skin and a moved engine. Same suspension, same brakes, same interior pieces, same engine - just a new transmission and a chassis adapted to the new engine location. Of course, the chassis adaptations are implied in a new engine location, but laypeople don't understand that.
+RandomTXDude210 Thats if you choose to use corvette parts because its easy, could just buy aftermarket everything. Hell you could even put a quad-rotor in it and put it up against a 787b.
The silver Summit Racing car is owned by the President of Summit Racing and their PR people didn't want to get it damaged roadracing so we let it sit out that test. I should note that the Lambo was afraid of the Dragstrip and $ clutches on those cars. Dave Smith President Factory Five
I agree with many of the comments below. If your're going to build one, go big or don't go at all. My Gen. 2 ffr cobra has a stroker windsor with 550 hp at the rear. Puts you in a whole different atmosphere...
Dave thanks for the info. After looking at some original cars and other replicas the Factory 5 cars appear to have a slightly different distance between the bottom of the door and the bottom of the body. This may be a optical illusion cause by the side pipes or their placement. When I first saw a MkIV kit I thought the car was stretched in this area compared to an original. Like I said- might be an optical illusion.
My only problem with the Factory Five Cobras is that all the chassis/header options are for Ford engines. I'd want to put a LS motor in one since I'm a Bowtie Guy.
Its possible, but requires a huge amount of dedication. Not sure on the step by step manual, best to know car builders/clubs and the like that can help you.
even though they were just testing Factory 5 cars here vs newer supercars, it would of been cool to include the SLC (also a supercar kit car) against the newer supercars.

Who else prefers the gray-red cobra over the others? :)
The 33 Ford was my favorite from the start and I was overwhelmed when it beat the Lamborghini. Factory Five and Hot Rod - this episode has gone straight into my favorites.
Bring out the GTM,GTM vs Lamborghini Gallardo!

Your name and your comment made me smile. He definitely didn't have the Tesla S and the Fisker in mind when making that statement. They both kinda do pretty well in the torque=acceleration vs HP department :) As far as petrol vs diesel goes I would tend to agree with you. Up to a certain point of course.
the base price on the 33 is $19,990 for the complete kit not a bad deal seeing that when you'r done you have a great handling ride for a fraction of the price of a super car !
yeah but that cobra has way more style than the Lambo... anyone with the money can buy a Lambo, it takes a true car lover to drive and enjoy a Cobra
I would like to see how the 818 with a Subaru WRX engine handles that track.
Dave
I've crashed plenty of FFR's and I'd rather be in a steel tube-framed FFR than ANY uni-body production car. Dave @Factory Five
That cobra looks epic. They're all beautiful kits, for the price it's hard to argue with them.
Cool! I always wondered how these kit cars would compare against a modern day super car. Good video Motor Trend.
Taylor, I was there and the times are quite legit. You are welcome to visit the Factory here in Massachusetts and I'll take you out in the red Mk4 or the blue Coupe and you'll be convinced. Dave Smith, President Factory Five Racing
I have no specific brand preferences, but let me tell you, those ford small blocks ALWAYS sound great.
Modern day performance with style of yesteryear. The perfect blend.
Wonder if they have the AMXIII kit... That would be just plain Frigging Awesome.
Hi there, those cars assembled like the coupe and the roadster run around $32,000, $38,000 the way they sit..
That 33 is a monster! With a little tune tires and time it's low tens and a gokart on the track
I think a cool test would be the Factory Five Cobra vs the Caterham superlight. A comparison of two cars with simmilar goals but different tactics.
lambo is lucky they didn't take out a gtm
the one thing that would be really cool to see is let Essa drift any of those cars
The audio in this video is excellent!
Fantastic video! Love this comparison and Factory Five. Really impressed with the numbers they put down.

EXCELLENT video!!! Thanks for posting!
The "oops" spin outs at the end would be me. Building a factory 5 is my dream. Unquestionably the highest $/fun ratio available!
LOVE THE 33 FORD REPLICA. TOO COOL FOR WORDS. GOOD JOB FACTORY 5.
Where is the GTM? I am disapointed that you didn't compare the GTM.
Really cool episode!
I am so building one of these when I retire!
Congrats Factory Five. Any car you can track is a real CAR...ain't no kit about it. Hanging and even BEATING the Lambo is just frosting on the cake.
What amazing kit cars, great video!
Like I said- might be an optical illusion.
has anyone said how awesome this vid is?
The noise is just GLOOOOOOOORIOUS!
I want one! Here in Europe...
I want that 33 so BAD!
Dear MotorTrend,
I'm now in love with the idea of building a Factory Five kit car before die...
Sincerely,
DarkXemplar

We do have a distributor for N Africa and Middle East. Talk to Jason here at Factory Five. Dave Smith
Man, that '33 Ford is Awesome! Old meets New, very cool! Oh, and you never have to ask "What's under the hood?" LOL
what engine was under the 33 ford
@@larrypilch3284 It looks like a Ford 427 small block making around 510hp to the wheels.
wish they track tested the 427, I have been interested ever since they posted the build blog.
That Daytona!! Awesome.
Been waiting to build one of these since I say the article in Motor Trend in 1991 when I was in desert storm. One day I'll get the chance.
Power-to-weight masterclass, here.
even though they were just testing Factory 5 cars here vs newer supercars, it would of been cool to include the SLC (also a supercar kit car) against the newer supercars.
