- On this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited, Staff Editor Thom Taylor drives a channeled, topless Deuce roadster in the dead of winter from Nashville to LA, encountering what you would expect in the middle of winter: ice, rain, cold, frost, and did we mention cold. Thom drove the roadster back to LA to promote HOT ROD's 65th anniversary event, HOT ROD Homecoming, taking place in March 2013 (HotRodHomecoming.com). Watch the roadster slip, slide and spin 2,000 miles as Thom takes Interstate 40 through eight states and 70-degrees of temperature change, taking breaks for burnouts, breakdowns, bad weather and junkyards.

I love this video I watch it atleast twice a year for the last 4 or so years maybe longer
Yes, Yes, Yes!!! More Hot Rod mag, more pre '48, and more off road please. I want to see stuff being built, driven, broken and fixed. Bill's garage is awesome. Bp and other old equipment in the corner, an Indy car, and projects everywhere.
Glad we were able to spark some nostalgic reminiscing for you! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and memories!
Wow, all the negativity in the comment section - he doesn't have to be roadkill, it doesn't matter if there are similarities because frankly it's the same channel and that people actually complain about the lack of breaking down on the side of the road goes a long way to show what kind of audience is watching. Be thankful that you're getting another roadkill-esque video to shorten your wait till your next fix.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting us know!
Much appreciated, Mark!
So glad you enjoyed it!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I LOVE MY HOT ROD FAMILY!!!! SO MUCH FUN!!!! THANKS FOR SHARING!!!!
I been reading hotrod for 45 years, but I truly love watching the video's
mad respect now that's what i call hot rodding!
Brings back memories. 3 years ago in February, my 13 year old son and I hopped on a plane from Orange County, CA to Dallas, TX and purchased a '68 Datsun 2000 convertible and drove it half way back to So Cal. We towed it the other half after an accident in Las Cruses, NM. We had a top and a heater, but only put on the top in the rain and sleet. Many issues and problems to solve along the way. It was great!
Awesome video. I remember seeing that car in a magazine when i was a kid; it's so cool to see it again.
6:18 the time lapse of the gauges fluctuating looks awesome!
Impressive, the more I watch this hot rod the more I like how it looks and drives.
I enjoyed the video and the ride myself I would go in a heartbeat
Motor trend is basically the best thing ever. It's better than Top gear (UK) for the following reasons: 1) It's set in america, so we get a greater variety of cars 2) its much much more frequent 3) The hosts are all awesome in their own ways, from roadkill to hot rod to the bike one 4) They really know their stuff 5) It is really really well produced/filmed/edited 6) THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
I'am imprassed, this car, it's something more than just a hot rod - it gives inspiration!!!
Wow!
Cars Australia
Is the best facebook page, there is new content everyday, there is car news, photos and much much more! It cant hurt to like it!
that cor combo caused me to build my first roadster same color and bills 40 too thank you bill and thanks thom a couple real Hotrod heros thank you gord schwarz
Nothing looks as cool as smoke coming off the tires of a '32 roadster.
I can relate; I drove my '32 Ford sedan three times from New Jersey to the California Nationals. No backup, no trailer, no support group just gasoline. Does all that count?
LUMBER JACKET AND A HOT ROD DANG COOL HAS NO AGE
Beautiful, simple 32 roadster. Hot Rod unplugged!
Great job Thom, love the car!
Wow, TH-cam recommended this out of nowhere. Cool.
12:00, almost guaranteed the cow is wondering whether you're there to bring it food.
I realize this was 7 years ago, but what a cool video. My longest trip in my topless roadster was about 800 miles one way, can't even think about 2000 miles in it. LOL
Taylor is a legend. Great vid. Great story.
Way to go Thom Taylor. Your art in a round about way made me what I am today. Jim Ford Highway 101Rod and Custom.
In january!!? Thom, you are a brave man. Would not do this in the winter, in my Deuce Cpe. Knew a couple of guys that drove there roadsters in late 50s or early 60s but not in winter. Must have been a BLAST! THANKS! for posting this.
nice looking hot rod roadster
lot of people have the tendency to take these projects and get tacky with the style
Rain-X is some good shit man, works great.
Glad to see the car isn't a trailer queen! Must have been a blast! This has been added to my bucket list. Drive cross country in a open top anything. Maybe if and when i get a 64 Sunbeam Tiger. Thanks for the inspiration HotRod!!!
Thats whats its all about... Building a cool car and DRIVING IT!!! Not using it as a trophy or making it a trailer queen... Awesome video very inspiring...
That’s an awesome drive and shows that if you build it right you can drive across the us🇺🇸 with out breaking down more drive time less wrenching
Cool to see even David Yke loves cars.
Don't forget that they also had a V8 option. That combined with price and weight made the '32 a legend. Of course, they didn't look bad either...
Yes love the old school vibe,..really cool
best show on MT
You were asking what that cow may have been thinking go ahead piss on the fence I laughed my ass off lol
ice on the fuel line would that be like a free natural cool can haha
..cow's thinkin:
I wonder what that dude with the leaky rod is thinkin...
Or if he thinks at all...
Does anyone know the name of the music/song playing when they first introduced the car
Matthew Mullins ive been wondering that for a while still haven't been able to find out what it is either
Matthew Mullins Dave Pearson sweet sound of escape found it
***** sorry bud I meant the one at the 40 second mark, but thanks for the other song
Haha! That's funny.
David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan should have done it..! Roadkill all the way, those guys are hilarious together, especially when driving some sort of junker. MORE ROADKILL!!
Lovely car, and the pin-striping is just right.
On to of that, I love the garages.
It sure felt like Winter Epic Hot Rod Drive. I did enjoyed it. I wonder about that cow. Thanks!
This guy should play in a detective tv show, you know the cassic lonely guy who's wife left him XD
I had a ride in an Ariel Atom 300 the other day. The driver wore a snow suit and a helmet whereas I only had a light jacket and sunglasses. He only took me for a spin, so it wasn't too bad for me. As everybody knows, this thing is quick, so I was happy despite the cold temperatures. I bet better clothing would have made your ride a little more comfy, too :D. Great video, I really enjoyed watching! Would have liked it to be 30 minutes long :). All the best!
Shamrock Texas looked like a cool town I might have to take a road trip
This should have been an episode of Roadkill.
Great job Thom.
That cow was thinking "Where's the beef?".
AWESOME.Living a dream,
That was excellent.
Totally enjoyed every 15:03 of the footage! Thanks guys
I got frost bite just watching this damn video.
Alright guys, Roadkill is absolutely great but it's a different concept with a different theme. This was a fun video, particularly to those of us who have done something similar. Thom had a plenty of personality, it's just different from those of Freiburger and Finnegan. This wasn't about getting a junk yard beater running long enough to complete a road trip (without overheating...), this is a story of man and machine.
He needed a nice old school Buco helmet ..Very nice video and cool hot rod!
Good video, enjoyable watch. I love this channel. Thank god TH-cam has come around, reading is so 1980's.
Just my kind of adventure. Glad you made it ok.
great vid. living in uk it's good to see the USA from a different angle.
I dunno about Tennessee, but any day that isn't wet or freezing is a good day in Oregon
Looks like you had fun!
I'd like to get that land yacht Chrysler Thom passed as he pulled out of the garage.
Real cool hot rod... Love the story .,...thanks for making the podcast vid
Really nice Road Trip !
it held up really good for a trip that long
I love Motor Trend i watch every single video you guys post and i want some more
I'll tell ya what it takes huge balls to do this trip in that kind of weather.
VERY brave man !....good looking car !
They dont even know what that stuff is on the west coast lol. I was thinking ski goggles for sure though rather than glasses
very sick video . thanks alot
WHOA awesome vid. You know what I was thinking the whole time? I was thinking that this isn't Roadkill.
Nice winter drive should have had a helmet and snowmobile suit :)
Brilliant love it well done , it stayed togetther and made it
Should have just gotten a snow mobile helmet and keep the seat in it with a blanket and some gloves lol
I can't believe you drove that car that far!! That's awesome!! I would never drive mine that far! Don't think it would make it!😞
Laughing at the cow part
That's weird. I learned of the Grand National Roadster show or whatever it's called, and I've been scouring the internet for pictures of these old Fords...and then Motortrend uploads a video of one!
they get it already!
Very insparational thanks for the video
onr of my idols thom taylor
That would have been a blast
Just imagine how cold it would be driving a couple states north haha
Bill Akin is a hero of mine!
This dude looks and sounds a lot like Billy Bob Thornton.
For all those complaining that this isn't Roadkill, they are right. But it is not intended to be. Freiburger is a great editor and writer but he doesn't do Hot Rod anymore. He was no Robert Petersen, CJ Baker or Marlan Davis either. You don't hear people whining because another group of writers came along now do you? Hot Rod has had a lot of different staff members since 1948 and hopefully have many more in the next 70 years. Video like this is still in its infancy so there will many more in the years to come unless this medium turns into an M TV.
amazing edsels there !!!!
Friedburger :D That made me laugh!
are you crazy or just nuts? hahahha good shit man
Now I understand why hot rodding is a California thing.
Very nice car and way cool trip, loved the video!
The epitome of cool.
Excellent video
This guy is no Freiburger. Or Fennigan for that matter.
Clint Grantham Theres no way that guy drove the whole way.
Clint Grantham no, but he is one hell of a designer. he was very influential in the hot rod/ custom car scene. and he teaches many kids how to draw cars with his how to draw cars books. and he is very well known at art center pasadena.
He seems very pretentious.
Clint Grantham Clint you seem to be shallow with poor reasoning skills. I have alot of friends, all with varried personalities and interest. Thom is not Dave or Mike.. nor is he trying to be .. being yourself is called authenticity. Yet you are saying he's pretentious and that he should be more like Fri and Fin. Not one on the Hot Rod staff is a trained actor or TV host.. they are all writers and that is their primary skill. Thom is not hanging with a buddy cutting up like Roadkill.. he's by himself on a long trip trying to put together some little clips/items to make something interesting to watch. Watch Finnegan on Hot Rod Garage.. by himself and instructing (solo doing a piece like Thom) not near the charisma as when he's just having fun with David.. Live and let live and if you can't.. just keep it to yourself. Rock on Thom.
Closeoutracer agreed, well said man.
Winter storm helan?? You name your storms down south??haha lol
If that was my car, I don't know that I'd want it being driven topless through freezing rain. Anyway, cool car and cool vid.
yay Nashville!
Wow I've never seen that many Edsels in one place even in a junkyard
GREAT STORY!
That was awesome!
