    Tom Lefroy: I have no money, no property, I am entirely dependent upon that bizarre old lunatic, my uncle. I cannot yet offer marriage, but you must know what I feel. Jane, I'm yours. God, I'm yours. I'm yours, heart and soul. Much good that is.

      Fantasy 87 yes! Jane was known for having a sharp wit, which actually drove away men of that time. She wrote Pride and Prejudice in the same year that she met and was forced to part with Tom and she wanted a heroine in similar circumstances to herself to succeed in love like she unfortunately never did.

    It's really sad when you think about it. She didn't marry Tom. She never married. She died at 41. And yet her novels are all about love and happy endings, the heroine winning the heart of the rich hero. But she had a short life and her sister Cassandra never married. Just sad. Real life compared to books seems lacking.

    I love her novels. She's the author made me fell in love with literature. She's also my reminder that not everyone affords a romance. She's all about flowers and heart, love and all. But she dies young, and alone, she didn't even got to finish her last book. From Jane, I'm ready to believe that.....

    • @JT-hs9or
      @JT-hs9or 7 ปีที่แล้ว +462

      Tabby Roberts No, he was not rich. Tom Lefroy came from a poor family and he had 9 siblings and parents that totally depend on him, financially. He was taken care by his uncle who was a judge, that gave him money. He sent his uncle's money to his family, secretly, to support their life back there in Ireland. In this movie it's described that when Jane found out about this fact, she thought that if they got married, their circumstances will destroy their love slowly, because Jane was also poor and had to depend on him too. She thought that they could never make it. So she decided that they can't be together. It's beautiful, realistic and tragic in one package.

    • @JT-hs9or
      @JT-hs9or 7 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      But yes, in this movie it seems like he was actually rich by inheritance. In one part of this movie, his uncle told him that his mother (his uncle's sister) was actually born rich. But later in her life she decided to marry a poor guy, and then become poor too.

  • @JT-hs9or

    The saddest thing about this movie is that it probably really happened in Jane's and Tom's real life. If this really happened, Im a little bit thankful by the fact that Jane died at 41. But Tom.........he died at 93! I mean, can you imagine living a long life with that deep, consuming sorrow!?

    • @JT-hs9or
      @JT-hs9or 7 ปีที่แล้ว +268

      Yes I had the same thought once. When you get your heart broken, time will heal and erase everything and you will find someone else and fall in love again. But as I grew older, I've read and heard so many stories similar to this. That sometimes you can't completely erase someone, even when you are married and have some kids. Human's heart is mysterious.

      @sweetface3987 7 ปีที่แล้ว +270

      JT 1987 True. My mom and dad have been married for 25 years but she still tells me about her first love. They were engaged but she ended up moving to America and lost connection with him. Soon there after she met my dad. There are times when she remembers and cries. I guess you never really forget the one that got away because you always wonder, what if?

      Maybe there's where 'Persuasion' comes in (since it's written later in her life) . Like Anne, Austen probably long for the lost opportunity to marry him. Perhaps it's a wishful thinking poured out on her books (in Anne's case, a second chance came + the Wentworth returned richer). Probably what she hoped to happen in her own love life.
      no, I don't really know. I probably make no sense

    I loved this movie. It is more romantic than what happened in Jane’s real life: Tom was someone she spoke to a few times at those balls. They were very aware of each other, but there was no great romance. McAvoy made me very aware of *him* in this movie, though...he did such a great job I think he *is* this film.

    This is a wonderfully made movie. I would hope the same cast can continue to make adapted movies of other Jane Austen novels. I am a bit in doubt of the historic truth of the plot itself though. From " Pride and Prejudice" we got to know what Austen's perception ( and society's of course) to Lydia's eloping. How could she have ever thought of doing it herself? Jane was quite modernized in this story. I wouldn't deny that she had experience deep and inspiring love. But 18th century love was, and should be different from one of the 20th century.
