- Welcome back to another episode of Making Home! If you’ve been following along since the beginning you would know that Kelsey converted the upstairs living area of her small city home into a rental suite…however, when her boyfriend moved in, they took over the upstairs to have more space. Elliott quickly adopted the kitchen into his at-home office. That said, it still needs to work as a kitchen, so in today’s episode, Kelsey is making over this space while keeping it as a multi-function room.

I actually like the dark espresso brown. It's grown on me. Definitely would take it over gray but I get a lot of people don't know how to style with brown. It's more versatile than people think at the same time its more vintage than modern. You really would have to know what you're doing to make it look more modern than not

This is beautiful! Sorry for your fall, hope you are doing better now, Kelsey! One strong suggestion: Curtains on the window for better view of the monitors. It will ease Elliott's eyes (I don't know in English, but he can get "tired eyesight" if he is forcing his view too much to see the monitor). Even when the brightness is full, with sunlight sometimes it's not enough and he can get headaches.
Eye strain is real! Paper shades would be just fine.

Agreed, I’ve had my desk against a window before and as nice as it is to look outside it can really start to hurt your eyes!

I’m so glad to see that Kelsey is doing okay after hitting her head. Concussions are no joke. It’s always ALWAYS better to be safe rather than sorry when it comes to head trauma. Kudos on the amazing makeover! Kelsey and Rochelle really did amazing work on this one!

I've been loving how you've been pushing more moody colors, and as soon as the paint came out I gasped in DELIGHT! I'm so glad you got your head checked out as well, concussions are no joke. All the props to Rochelle, she's such a gem of a human being! Also, for anyone tired of the browns... it's making a comeback in a huge and new way this year for interior design! I adored this colour and honestly taking it across the window was the right choice!

I love the brown wall, gotta keep a color scheme throughout the whole house. it's the brown fireplace I'm still trying to get onboard. Your style is so awesome and unique, so we keep an open mind for you!
I love this, especially the brown paint! One thought i had - you could build a little removable wooden box over the stove top (like people do with gas stoves in small places) and I think it would add another nice touch. Anyhow, this was a great example of doing more with the spaces you have.

A tip for painting headboard: if you get a roller sleeve with a longer nap, it’ll have a much easier time getting into those grooves

This makeover was a homerun! Even the dark chocolate paint looked great. It pulled everything together. And that desk, wow!
A monitor mount creates so much extra desk space, literally just got a double one for my work desk at home and the amount of space it freed up is incredible.
I love the brown paint color, it’s gorgeous and rich! And I really dig the way you painted across the window trim, something about it scratches my brain right lol. Don’t worry about us the fans liking or disliking the paint, you are doing it for him, not us, he has to like it and you picked a color you knew he’d like :)
While I still don’t fully understand why his office is in the kitchen rather than one of the other rooms upstairs, you really did a lot with this space! It looks great. Opening up that one cabinet to create some open shelving made a surprising amount of difference

Rochelle IS A GEM! And Kelsey, please take care, I have concussed myself while cleaning recently too and had horrible headaches for 2 months it was really not fun :( This makeover is amazing, and I think the brown fits really well, I hope Elliot enjoys it!
Omg I’m SO happy you went & got medical attention! Head injuries are no joke … you can feel totally fine for hours after the impact and then disaster can strike. Take care!!!
i watched the desk build and i was so HYPE for this video!!! Great job, I love how this turned out :) Also i hope you're ok Kelsey! Concussions are serious business, i deal with post-concussive syndrome from a rugby incident 6 years ago and it affects my every day life..
I suffered a concussion in oct '22 and that winter started noticing some things tasted different or badly, your comment made me look into post concussion syndrome and change of taste and smell can be one and I feel like I finally figured it out.

You should make a nice wooden burner cover for the stove top with a matching stain to the desk. That could tie the office corner colors to the kitchen space and make the surface area of the stove more usable while it's not utilized for cooking. Also would make the whole space a little less kitchen-y.

Great makeover, Kelsey! Love the brown colour. Brown *can* be a wonderful colour in the right shade and bittersweet chocolate is clearly the right colour in Elliott's office. Love his plant babies. The brown in this room looks great! Rug is just right. It's a beautiful redo of the space and Rochelle's desk is just amazing!
I have many types of plants but my pothos is special -- goes back to a beloved older cousin, one of the few in her generation who escaped before WWII. She was minimally educated but smart and incredibly kind. She gave me the pothos that all the rest have come from (my grown kids all have plants from it). The pothos is a survivor, just like her. So appreciate Elliott's plants!

IKEA sells white plugs for shelf-holes. We used them on our glass-doored cabinetry

Two things! I love what you've done. Great job! Here is an SBI (sathingly brilliant idea) Have you ever heard of a dough board? They're everywhere now!make one for the stove top (which is what they were originally created for), giving you more counrer-type space and a place to knead your dough! It would be another way to camouflage the kitchen into an office. Again, great job!
I use an ikea LÄMPLIG chopping board on top of my gas stove in my small kitchen for more surface space. The chopping board is large, fully covers the stove and has a lip that covers the raised grate section.
@@nixi-bixi I bought two huge floor tiles and use them to cover my gas stove. I figure it's more fire safe.

The makeover was really lovely and such a sweet thing to do for Elliott! Also I'm happy that Kelsey is okey, concussions aren't a laughing matter even if they're light. I've have had two concussions in my life and the last one was pretty bad to the point that I should've taken a sick leave. What I noticed is: dark rooms, no screens, quiet and some light but heart raising exercise is good for the noggin. Don't know how long ago this was but I hope she's feeling better.

Pro-Tip: Take off the outlet cover and write the paint color on the back! That way, you always have it there to reference!

Ouch, that fall was not fun, glad you were okay. I find the dark brown works well as an office space, but it really does contrast how light and bright the kitchen looked when it was white. But like you said, if it's to be used as a kitchen again, it can be repainted easily!
*Amazing Compromise* . I don't know how I would feel if my "office" was in the kitchen on the daily, then again I have my computer stashed in an armoire and it's my favorite spot because it's filled with inspo in the background. I love the brown color, rug and desk. The desk in the corner provides great natural light and a view of the outdoors. Great decision on the open shelving and incorporating the plants. Thumbs up on the curtain to hide a very utilitarian space. The one element I would consider adding is a wood tray on the stove top to conceal the burners. With all the talent in TSG team, I'm sure something could be done that doesn't feel too farmhouse.

So I’ve had 5 concussions and a TBI and it definitely looks like you have one. You can see it in your eyes, and hear it in your voice after you got home from the clinic. Take care of yourself!!

This is my add-on tip for anyone who wants to change the fabric on an office chair, glue gun another fabric of your choice over the existing one, I do this all the time and it works perfectly, especially on items that are difficult to replace or change.
I LOVE that paint color!... (I mean the brown on the wall.) This is my hubby's favorite too. 😉

Embrace your love of autumn colors and don't let others make you feel bad. You like what you like. Is it {brown} my aesthetic? No. Can I enjoy you doing it in your home and elsewhere? Absolutely!! Would you like my aesthetic? Probably not. No biggie. The differences in each of our homes is what makes it so much fun going to different homes. I can appreciate a well put together home. I love when people have put thought into what they have. It always shows. One aspect i like about the Sorry girls is the occasional whimsy thrown in!

Honestly I don't blame you for not ripping out the kitchen. That would be A LOT of demo, and the kitchens already there. It works. It exists. It seems wasteful to completely undo the work you did to change it. I love when people work with what they have done instead of just... ripping out everything every single time they need the space to do other things too. The brown wall color is great! It's nice to break up all the white everywhere. and Brown IS a color! Put a shelf above the window? You could fit more plants on there and they would drape nicely over the window. Especially the vine ones.
I watched the corner desk video and it was fabulous and now, I see it all coming together and it is amazing! I don't know if anyone has talked about this, but the music transitions and action-overs are great. Someone really knows what they are doing when they pick the music to keep the viewer engaged during the non-talking parts. Kudos to the videos lately, really leveled up to perfection!
Same here, I only have vacuum and the hand broom for the pieces that I want to broom first (soil when transplanting plants, big pieces of glass if something gets broken and for urgent cases when something needs to be swept after 10 pm when neighbours are resting). I think vacuuming is the best, because it doesnt lift the dust and the small particles are also vacuumed.
Wow! You're so lucky you weren't alone! I got concussed when I was home alone and didn't realize I had a concussion until months later😅 The confusion can make you too fuzzy to realize you might need help. I turned out okay, but it makes me worry for myself and others now
