      It’s really weird honestly. I’ve umpired for 5 years and I’m still learning them. The problem is that baseball has so many “rules” that aren’t actually in the rule book like “tie goes to the runner” which is not true

      Balk Rules
      You can't just be up there and just doin' a balk like that.
      1a. A balk is when you
      1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the
      1c. Let me start over
      1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can't do that.
      1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that.
      1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to pitch and then don't pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense?
      1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it.
      1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there's the balk you gotta think about.

      It revealed the true mistake by the ump: *not* calling a balk on all the other pitches. The fact that Bleier's glove never stops swaying when he brings it in front of him means that he isn't coming set. The rulebook is very clear about *complete stops* in the set position, and specifically begs umps to call the balks this ump is calling.
      "The pitcher, following his stretch, must (a) hold the ball in both hands in front of his body and (b) come to a complete stop. This must be enforced. Umpires should watch this closely. Pitchers are constantly attempting to 'beat the rule' in their efforts to hold runners on bases and in cases where the pitcher fails to make a complete 'stop' called for in the rules, the umpire should immediately call a 'Balk.'"

      @@Paul_K_ I agree but it’s never called. That’s one of the things with balk issue. The rules are very clear but you never see them called so anytime it gets called it seems horseshit.
      Still, I think he came set, his body stopped and his glove only moved because he was regripping the ball…
      That’s not even a balk at younger levels where they are tbf called much more strict.

      I mean, not really, but after the second one the umpire staff should have given some clarification. You can argue his glove moved a bit, but if that's what was being called every pitch was a balk. The ump needs to be consistent so the pitcher can figure out how to adjust.

  • @wearelegion6520
    @wearelegion6520 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think it is the glove moving downward. His glove isn't stopping, he comes to a set position, but the glove doesn't stop sliding downward. Technically, you need a full stop of everything to be 'set'. Anything that is still moving means you haven't come set. From the rulebook, "The pitcher is not allowed to simply “roll through” coming set." 'Going on first movement', as often talked about by base stealers, is talking about first movement after coming set. If you never stop moving, you haven't come set, therefore the base runner doesn't know when is the best time to go.
    Some pitchers come set twice, Clayton Kershaw from the stretch is a prime example. I have no idea why that is not called a balk every single time. He stops at the top, then brings it down to his waist, stops again, then goes to the plate. Stopping twice is a balk

    • @justinmiller5660
      @justinmiller5660 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      because the rule is meant for not stopping, like easily seen. not maybe he didn't stop this time? he came "set" because it was part of his motion. a batter/runner could tell he was set. that's also why Kershaw isn't called, because its part of his normal motion and batter and runners know it.

    • @RicardoKugo
      @RicardoKugo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup, its technically a balk by rule. But its so minor, And Bleiers motion is not much, if at all, harder to time because of it for a baserunner. So most Umpires literally don't care if he does it as long as its not fooling/impacting the runners which a balk is meant for. And then when someone does actually call it, he starts doing it at random instead of consistency. This ump either shouldve called a balk every pitch so Bleier could actually adjust to it, or like every other umpire not at all. Instead of randomly calling it and letting it slide..

  • @bluejaysbaseball

    Came here to watch a balk call. My guy sets his glove, looks to first, then looks back to base. At this time my phone rang, it was my great Aunt Edith calling, wanting to know my Christmas plans. Told her I'd be travelling her way, and cant wait to see the family. Fast forward a few weeks, I drove from my House in Texas, and headed interstate to Aunt Edith's house. I had just the most lovely Christmas dinner with the family. It was great to catch up. My Uncle Tony, he's a real generous guy, works for Emirates. He managed to hook me up with a free Mystery flight vacation. All I had to do, was go to the airport, and I'd be put on a plane to a surprise location! Turns out, they took me to Beijing, how exciting. Well, I spent the next 5 weeks leap frogging the Great Wall of China, and believe me, that was no easy task! But I did meet the most fantastic woman whilst on this venture. She was also on vacation, out of Vancouver. We exchanged life stories, had a lot of laughs, and explored some more of what Asia had to offer. I ended up redirecting my flight home, and instead went to Canada with this lady. She showed me around Vancouver, introduced me to her family, and we quickly fell in love. It was just like a fairy tale. There was nothing for me at home, I didn't really need to go back there, which is why I was so relieved when she asked me to move in with her. Of course I said yes. I ended up getting a job as a tyre salesman just a few blocks away. It was a pretty easy job, and I had a natural talent for it I guess. Eventually worked my way up to the regional manager, in charge of 5 store locations, wow! And with such a big pay rise, we decided maybe it was time to marry and look towards having our own children. We're now a family of 4. Myself, my wife Carrie, and our 2 children. My son Thomas is 28 years old now, and works as one of those skyrise crane operators. Scary job, but he's always been the daring kind. My daughter Lucy, she lives in California, and she's just finished her degree in Veterinarian science, with hopes to fulfil her lifelong dream of working with animals. To congratulate her, I thought maybe I should surprise her with a gift. An old school friend of mine owns a Veterinarian practice in Dallas, and he owed me a few favours. He agreed to give Lucy a full-time position there. Luckily I still had my old house there too. I hadn't been back there since before I met Carrie, but I just knew, passing that house on to Lucy was exactly what she needed to get going. Of course, all this time abandoned, I should head there to clean it up a bit before surprising her. So, I jumped onboard a plane, flew into Dallas, and took an Uber to my old house. It was a little run down, but nothing too serious. A little bit of elbow grease would clean it up proper. I opened the front door, and oddly, there was a sound within... It puzzled me for a moment, what could it possibly be? I searched through, room by room, and as I made my way down the hallway, the sound became louder, and louder. I was close, it was in the next room surely. I could even see a little bit of light leaking from under the door. I carefully cracked open the door slightly, and took a peak inside... That's when I remembered. I never turned my PC off, before flying to China. Not only that, but I got back just in time to see the ball leaving Richard Bleier's hand. You wont believe it though, that stupid 1st base umpire called it a balk!

      Hands never came to a clearly complete stop. Umpires have been letting that slide for years, giving a small number of pitchers an advantage with baserunners. It should probably be addressed in an offseason, rather than in the middle of a single game. Then again, Bleier probably should just have made sure he comes to a complete stop after he got called for it once. He could have complained to the league afterwards.
