    About this balk, you have John Tumpane calling it - an excellent umpire who makes the right call, by rule.
    However, I can't argue with Madden's argument here. I have made it many times (as an umpire!)
    Madden's issue needs to be taken up with the rules committee, not the guy who is just doing what the rules say.

    • @zym6687

      Rule 8.05 Comment: Umpires should bear in mind that the purpose of the balk rule is to prevent
      the pitcher from deliberately deceiving the base runner. If there is doubt in the umpire’s mind, the
      “intent” of the pitcher should govern.

    • @adamleblanc5294
      @adamleblanc5294 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think what needs to happen is the balk rules need to be TIGHTENED rather than losened. I feel like a lot of the confusion comes from how vague the rules are. The rule is written as a list of things you can't do. The balk is an important rule, because the pitcher being predictable makes the running game possible. If runners cannot anticipate the pitcher, then it takes that aspect of the game away.
      IMO it would be better to strengthen and expand the section that describes the "set" and "windup" position, as well as the rules around steping off and throwing to a base. Make the rules a list of "things you are allowed to do". Then make the balk rule "anything that is not exactly what the rules say you are supposed to do".
      It would be so much easier to say "this was a balk because they deviated from the defined procedure for delivering a pitch" than which of the 100 things they did wrong.

      @mavoc3094 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@zym6687 Thank you for this. I have used this to support my opposition (again, as an umpire) to many of the "start/stop" balks that my colleagues would jump on. However, we have to understand that the way Tumpane called it today is entirely consistent with the way MLB umps have been calling this same thing, for years. Again, I don't like 90% of the start/stop balks that are called, but they are consistent with the interpretation that MLB has adopted about the rule 6.02(a)1 - The pitcher, while touching his plate, makes any motion naturally associated with his pitch and fails to make such delivery.
      I, personally, don't agree.. but my opinion doesn't count.

  • @IamChevalier

    I can see this as a wise strategic move - even though it costs a single run - IF the batter you walked has the real potential to hit for 2 or more RBI(s) AND the on-deck batter is a better target for your existing pitching - I would make that call all day long.
    I've done something similar as a coach - walked a batter with bases loaded because he launched a shot that hasn't landed yet in a previous @ bat AND hit for a double. The on-deck batter was retired with 6 pitches - a strike out.
    So... a real risk of 3 runs against a single run and good odds for a strikeout or force play.
    I've seen it work AND I've seen it backfire - but the stats would say play the odds.

    Only after the Madden betting scandal news breaks, will a lot of his coaching moves make sense. The moves he made during the World Series were beyond comprehension.

    Oh wow, that comment about the balk about moving the arm every time-NOW I understand why pitchers do the same repetitive actions (pull hat, tug shirt, grab necklace ect)-because they do it to avoid a balk-TIL Thank you!

    This happened with joe Madden when he was with the rays and Texas(kinda ironic) and it was on josh Hamilton. And one more time it was the giants and marlins. Where they walked Barry bonds. Sooo this did happen a couple of times before this one

    The irony is, Joe Maddon walked Seager to avoid a potential multi-run at bat. But they ended up scoring multiple runs anyway! Galaxy brain maneuver from Maddon.

    As a Dodger fan I feel bad for Mike Trout for being in the Angels his whole career.

    I keep coming back to the Trout's reaction to this. Brilliant.
