  • 50mph with 10hp! This is the third episode of my mini 3-point hydroplane series.
    I’ll show you how I finished restoring the hull with 8 coats of epoxy, and then dive into the super rad, crazy rare Kiekhaefer Mercury racing outboard I have for this thing. I’m definitely not an expert by any means, so I’m learning a ton as I get this thing ready to rip this summer. If you have any more information that could help me, please leave it in the comments below!
    Check out this pretty rad documentary about the designer of this boat here:
    • The Life Of William D ...
    It's only 8 feet long and about 4 feet wide, but this little thing should hit 40-50mph when properly set up, and the sensation of speed being only inches from the water should make it seem like 100mph. Although it's in pretty great condition, there are a couple things I want to do to it before I get her wet; watch the video for my plans on refinishing the hull with a trick graphite and epoxy coating to reduce drag, and rebuild the steering area to improve the aesthetics.
    Hopefully watching this will help convince people to tackle their own boat restorations; it's dirty work sometimes but it's not too complex or challenging, so please leave a message if you have any questions and I'll try to help.
    If you liked this video or learned something, please check out some of my other videos and stay tuned for updates to the SST project!
    Products used in this video; clicking them supports my channel but doesn't cost you a penny, cheers!

    It sticks because there's no flywheel nut in the hole! Put it back on the motor so that the dogs catch on the nut, and then the nut should turn. Also, the dogs need heavy grease, not thin lubricant. The flywheel nut needs grease too. I was rebuilding these things in the 70's!

    • @thelucondrix391
      @thelucondrix391 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was going to say the same thing, a lot of the older pull start engines had grease to lubricate it, also not tightening it down to extremes may help.

      Same here Bro, Class A & B stock hydro and Runabout. Early 70s A.P.B.A. racing. P.S. I get a kick out of this (can build one in my sleep) from the ground up.

    My childhood tells me you got a Hydroplane 3 point. A mini Max is a little boat that can be made from a single sheet of plywood. My Uncle would take me out on his Mini Max with a 1955, 7.5hp Evinrude. The kid with a Johnson race motor had the loud pipes on a Three Point Hydro Plane.

    I am building these to start a race class in michigan again. Wooden, 8 foot x 4 foot wide limits and horsepower limits. I raced this class as a kid and want the same fun for my kids and grandkids.

    Use a Cratex bit to scar up inside those low spots. Then use micro balloons to thicken it up.

    Try adding some shims under the plate. It could be locking the mechanism when you tighten it down

    Those recoils can be an absolute pain in the ass! I prefer a tank at the steering bar a notched pulley on top of the crank and a pull rope that you have to wrap on the pulley every yank.

    It’s beading up because of oil in the wood. You can wipe it down with mineral spirits before applying anything that will help.

    Put the recoil on the motor. The pawls need to catch on the drive nut on the flywheel.

      Exactly what I was going to say. The pawls need to spring outward and grab the find on the flywheel. Works similar to the pull on the stihl you got. I'm a saw guy too. I own 9. Combination of Stihl and Husky. Cool old unit. Thanks for sharing.

    Simply put a washer between the plate that it is rubbing against. This acts as a spacer.

    Between each coat, wipe down with denatured alcohol. Should help with the issues with the adhesion of the additional coats participating.

    I’ve had that issue with epoxy before. I switched to 105/207, and that sees to have made that into a thing of the past. Sometimes spraying IPA over it helps for me also.

    The epoxy keeps beading up because there's a contaminant in the wood. Most likely its oil. You need to use rubbing alcohol on those spots to clean the wood. Then brush in epoxy on the spots to seal it. O. The pull start assembly I'll bet you its no longer engaging on the flywheel nut. Take the old nut off get a new nut and torque it on. If you still have the same issue get a couple of LOCK TOOTH WASHERS (not lock washers). Take the nut off and put the washers on then the nut. Torque nut tight then put pull start assembly back on making sure that the jaws aren't in the way of the nut getting in between the jaws. It should now properly engage n start motor.

    You should build some air traps on the hydro for more speed. Is that a KG4? That tank ring looks like a kg4. 7s had a fin that said hurricane too. Nice !

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s the plan would like to get a base line run to see how much speed the traps add

    Good Day : I've only once viewed the original design of the true "Sea Flee" . Oddly enough the original design was a one man sail boat . This was from an old copy of boat builder magazine . The shape was very close to the mini max , just a little longer . It's very interesting to your build !

  • @EDesigns_FL
    @EDesigns_FL 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your problem is with the recoil spring. Either it has broken or one end has come loss. First, remove the pull line handle so that you can work on the recoil assembly. Just pop the cap off and untie the knot. Then you can remove the rope spindle off the shaft. Pay attention to the recoil spring. If you aren't careful, it will unwind and blowup in your face.
    The fisheyes in the resin are from surface contaminants. Dish soap is okay for removing some oils, but it's inadequately by itself to prepare the surface. I like to follow up with alcohol and then acetone. Lacquer thinner and xylene also work well. You have to verify that acetone will not damage the existing finish before applying. Test some dried epoxy to make sure that it doesn't soften it.

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spring is definitely not broken, it pulls it back in fine. It just won't let the rope out.

    • @EDesigns_FL
      @EDesigns_FL 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ADDvanced I've gone through the issue you're having many times and it's always the spring. Typically, an end breaks off. The springs are hardened and VERY brittle. Sometimes the problem is with a piece breaking off a casting that is supposed to retain one end of the spring.
      The fact that there is still some preload to retract the pull rope does not in anyway indicate that there is not a problem with the spring.

    • @EDesigns_FL
      @EDesigns_FL 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ADDvanced It's also possible that your spring has some rust issues which has fused parts of it together and is restricting its range.

    Not a Minimax. Like you said it's a 3 pt hydro. Which should be faster than a Minimax which is a monohull. The 3 pt should have less hull in the water thus less resistance. In the 50s we had a Minimost type hull running a 10 hp Hurricane with the quicksilver lower. Could never get more than about 32 mph. Unfortunately the throttle stuck wide open and steering wheel came off in Dad's hands and he flipped it. With the throttle stuck wide open it sucked water in and destroyed the block. I was about 12 and used to run up and down the river alone.

    Wear a helmet bud. Why not a layer of roving tho? Edit. The fish eyes are from the woods sap. Try to spray the epoxy next time. Harbor freight conventional gun with a 2.0 tip works fine and $30 is easy to throw away if you can’t clean it quick enough

    • @ADDvanced
