    • Mercury 2 Stroke V6, 6...
    There was an amazing response to the first episode in this series that covers the design and development history for the Mercury 2 Stroke V6 Outboard( • Mercury 2 Stroke V6 Hi... ), and the 2nd episode covered the new project boat that came with a 150hp Black Max XR2 in detail. The boat was acquired dirt cheap because it wouldn't start and the seller needed to move, so I jumped on it!
    Link to Sarah's Swimsuit: amzn.to/3ST625m
    This episode skips ahead a bit on what I've done to the boat, to show you our first day on the lake with it. I'd never driven this boat before, and based on how weird it revved in the driveway, I wasn't sure it'd even get up on plane! Of course we ran into some issues, but I did get one top speed run, very limited, just to set a baseline of what this thing can do!

    Sweet rig! Congrats! A couple of things to help the motor run a little better; change out the poppet valve, if you've got a working tell tale, but the solid beep goes off its an overheat due to the water pressure being too high in the block, can't give up heat because the water is moving through too fast. Change the wires that run from the switch boxes to the coils, they break down with age and will cause idling issues and misses at high speed. If you strip one of those wires, the copper will show a lot of oxidation. Remove the idle stabilizer / electronic advance module; they can cause issues with the timing are are there because Mercury didn't know what propeller would actually get mated to the motor. Get rid of them and adjust the timing with the prop you're going to run, it'll wake that Xr2 up nicely. The oiler is a known weak point, the nylon gear on the crank doesn't like getting spun above 6000. Either remove the oiler / run premix or keep things below 6000. If there is an intermittent beep, its either the tank sensor or the oiler sensor, pay attention to them both. With a 21p trophy plus, 60 is very much in reach, a 23 will get you to about 65 all jacked up. Enjoy!

      Thanks for all the advice! Sarah changed the waterpump yesterday, and I have a poppet valve kit to put in, and a set of thermostats. Great tips on the wiring! How do you adjust timing with the prop? I'll have to look that up. Yeah, about the oiling system, I'd like to keep it if possible, does anyone offer a replacement gear out of a stronger material, like delrin or aluminum? The prop on it right now says 22p, and it's flawless. Not sure if it's a real trophy or a knockoff but it sure looks nice.

    • @philiplewis1774
      @philiplewis1774 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Happy to help - I've got a Centurion with the same color scheme. :-) To adjust the timing you'll need a test tank, the spec from the factory manual, and a timing light, the test tank is needed to simulate having the boat in the water at the right level, need to have the right back pressure (the ear muffs won't create that). You'll be able to set the idle and timing in gear; that will get the idle dialed in. The in-gear idle RPM and timing is very much influenced by the prop you run, a tallish prop like that will bog the motor a little as it slips into gear. The stock buzz box that compensates for that eventually burns out with age and can introduce an unstable element to the timing curve. The WOT timing isn't set in gear, but also needs the test tank to get it just right. Its amazing what a difference a little adjustment can make, just need to be careful. On the oiler, its a nylon gear right on the crank, only Mercury makes it and the only way to reach it is to split the block. The reason its nylon is as it ages, the nylon won't tear up the crank and the bearings as it wears. If you're going to keep the oiler, make sure the sensors and the control box are working properly, they will age and stop working. Its a reliable system as long as its maintained and kept within the operating parameters Mercury intended. Happy boating!

I go thru boat chapters as well lol A LOT of knowledge for older boats and stuff in general is withing the older guys (and gals) and is likely to never ever be published or even passed down unless one asks .... which is why i try to help by sharing ACCURATE informations when it comes to technical fixings and operations of vintage'y stuff.... I had the XR4 version of this motor on an 18ft VIP ski boat and it was BA! Best sounding outboard around! It would do 72 mph on a 21p Quicksilver Laser II prop. These motors are tempremental.1. Add 1/4-1/2 throttle and push the key in for the fuel enricher to start easier 2. They do not like to idle for long stretches. The carbs load up and it floods out. These were made to run, not troll. 3. Don't trust the water stream to determine if water pump is cooling. I changed water pumps every two years on mine. The impeller is undersized and, for some reason, wears out very quickly. Add a water
    pressure gauge to help monitor cooling and predict water pump replacement. 4. Ditch the oil injection, it will eventually fail. I was quoted $700 to replace it and that was in the late 90's. Previous owner converted it to premix because it failed on him and that's how I always ran it and never had a problem. Watching this makes me wish I had it back lol.

      That sounds extremely high. I had a 1991 Sea Ray 160CB with a 150 XR2 which makes about 10-12 hp less than the 175. Boat was not painted and well dialed in. Best I ever saw on GPS in saltwater was 58 running a HighFive. Not sure how a 175 will ever push a 190 to 60, even if it was running a Laser II.

      I'm liking this guy's boat content as well - you're right, there isn't enough of it for the few of us who are obsessed with them.
      Personally, I feel like some of the older and smaller runabouts (1950's through 1980's like this one) are going to start to becoming more 'hip' and popular as time goes on. Especially ones that are small enough to be towed with a passenger car or small pickup truck. Just like the 'cafe racer' craze and what it's done to the motorcycling world.....
      I guess it'll be cool to see it gain in popularity if that happens, but deals like this one will definteily dry up too!

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I feel like most boat content is new stuff for super rich people, and it's just out of reach for normal working class people. I don't get it. When I was a kid the rivers were full of 16-20' "sporty" go fast boats, ski boats, bajas, hydrostreams, glastrons, etc etc etc. I work in the marine industry and that entire segment is just gone; people buying new boats either get a pontoon or some boring open bow family camry type boat. Or a $150k wakeboard boat, or $250k high perf cat. The "affordable" performance boat is gone.

    This engine does NOT have a “ choke “ as in choke butterflies, it has an enrichener. It’s a solenoid that opens a valve draining fuel from the top carb bowl to the lower cylinders, turn the key to “ on “ then push in the key for 3to 5 seconds ( depends on outside temp and if engine is warmed up ) the engage the started, that should help .

    Love your boat projects. Keep them coming. Couple things i recomend. Obviously replace the water pump impeller. I would put new thermostats in the heads, the previous owner may not have done that or replaced them with washers to restrict flow. And me personally on an engine that old i would ditch the oil tank and premix the fuel 50:1. You are missing the oil resivor on the top front of the motor. In part two you aske about those three mounting points on the top front, thats what goes there and there should be an oil level sensor that goes into it.
    The 150 has vertical reeds as where the 200 has horizontal reeds. That is one of the main differences.
    You should try your coned lower unit on this boat. Raise the motor to where the nose cone is about a 1/4 inch below the pad, that would be a good starting point. Make sure you have a water pressure gauge and that its working. But at a 1/4 inch below you should be fine. And if you run the coned lower unit see if you can borrow a 24 or 26 pitch chopper prop, or some other over the hub surface piercing prop that will help carry the bow. You may be okay to run the prop you have but dont run it any higher than the 1/4 below the pad.
    Looking forward to the next video.

    beeping is related to the oil system only. It is normally that the oil is not completely to the top in the little reservoir on the engine. With the engine idling, loosen the cap and let it run till oil just starts to come out. Other options are the Oil warning module, not likely as it was not like that when you first started. Other option is the drive shaft in the oil pump is not turning. To make sure it is getting oil, add some oil to the fuel till you sort out the issue

    • @ADDvanced

    If you push the ignition key in while starting that activates the choke to help get it started on cold starts. Also use trim up when plaining out to help bring the bow down to compensate for pourposing. But make sure trim is all the way down when taking off for quick hole shots. Make sure your engine height to the hull of your boat is set by using your manual jack plate for optimum performance. Delete the oiler and premix never trust the automatic oiler on any two stroke ever.

    My 83 20ft Avenger had a steady horn under the dash for overheating. 225 Black max so no oil warning circuit. My yearly service I would always dip the sender in some boiled water to make sure it worked. Water pressure gauge on the dash to show the condition of the impeller. Running and idle. I learned the hard way. Don't go 2 years on an impeller. Don't worry about speed right now. Speed is over rated. What's fun is getting the boat 'loose'. Trim out until the boat starts to misbehave then bump down a bit. In my case I would then start jacking until water pressure bounced. No steering of course so just along for the ride at that point. This is a great boat to play around with before you dive into that SST. That's going to be a wild ride

      Yeah, not too worried about speed, need to solve the overheating issue. Sarah changed the waterpump yesterday, one of the gaskets did not look great, and was missing a chunk. Going to do the poppet valve soon too, and test it again on the water to see what happens. Then next steps are block some of the upper water pickup holes, and start jacking up the outboard a bit at a time. Maybe cut that skeg into a straight fin again too.

Just re-carpet the whole boat, and get new rubber stripping for the rub rail on top cap. Next, I would get a 3-blade 26p Fury or Tempest racing prop. Keep in mind, if you do spend the money on a prop, have a shop balance that prop, and polish it out. That will improve things dramatically. Bilge pump needs to be installed. Either service the oil injection to make sure it’s working properly or delete it and run premix fuel. That boat with a good tune up and the right prop, turning about 6500 rpm at full throttle and trimmed up after plane should do 65 to 70 mph easy. Late to the party and it’s probably old news by now but didn’t see it happening in the video. Once the bow breaks over start trimming up. Less wetted surface=more efficient use of horsepower. Bow lift is your friend (to a certain extent) on a v hull. There will be a sweet spot where the steering gets soft and easy. Look for a rooster tail but if it’s higher than the cowl you’re wasting horsepower. A water pressure gauge is a must. You can tune the jackplate and trim to see what speeds the boat is actually capable of.

I've almost seized my little 3.3 Merc before due to the water pump impeller being stuffed, first I knew of it was the engine bogging down because the piston expanded so much that it was binding in the bore. I love how it pops out of the water so quickly, my heavy cast iron stern drive won't do that in the red sleek at all; it will cook up top but if you floor it in the water it just won't hook up. I'm definitely not going to tear into this anytime soon. I am wanting to build seats for it pretty bad, but I think I can do that over winter.

It also has sew up tires, that as a kid, I always wondered why Dad bothered with the trouble compared to the more conventional beaded tires. He found out how those super thin tires handle in gravel when he encountered a road that was resurfaced with tar and chip (don't know if they do that in Wisconsin). He ended up in a ditch, and luckily a county sheriff saw him and took him to a hospital. He hurt his back pretty good but nothing permanent, fortunately. I wasn't with him on that outing. His bike came out of it relatively unscathed. We resumed riding together a few years before he passed.
      My hobby boat (I only have one...so far 😆) Is a '98 Sea Ray boring bow rider family boat that I picked up for $2500 for boat and trailer, The previous owner didn't winterize it properly and the 5.0 L block cracked so I replaced it with a stroked 350 (383) That I built over the winter. Did a bunch of cleanup and replaced the skanky carpet too. Been getting it out a fair amount this summer and have been trying to find the right prop for it. Had it up to 50 mph with a 23P prop and just picked up a SS Ballistic 26P to try. With the 23p I kept hitting the rev limiter so I know the boat's got more in it.
      Now that I've been bit by the boat bug I'm looking for a 20 ft maximum Formula, Donzi or Scarab 1 to make my next project. Know where there's any languishing and unloved?

    Talk about the deal of a lifetime!!! Even if you have to tear into that engine to remedy the overheating issue, do some maintenance, and throw a couple mods at it, that has to be the best $500 anyone could pretty much ever spend!!! Its too good to part out or anything like that either. Needs some decent Autometer, VDO, Defi, etc gauges so you can have a little peace of mind. I'm not big on outboards, but in the 2-stroke dept. I build hot saws/ work saws for customers and myself, I'm sure the usual tweaks apply, and if it were me for fun, I'd pick up a spare to do some mild port/ blend work on. I'm guessing you can mod your carbs, advance the timing, etc. Imagine some sick ass velocity stacks! Theres probably loads of these things just sitting around since they are older tech, and I'm sure less folks (except guys like us,) want the 'responsibility' of operating/ maintaining a 2-stroke in general. The great thing like you said, is the 'mixing/ matching' of the best parts, which is def the way to go for the best 'bang-for-buck.' These engines have quite a pedigree, and us 2-stroke guys can certainly appreciate them! 👍👍😎

A bunch of mercs had a planned failure neopreme gear on the crank to run a metal gear to the oil pump. It fails always and kills the engine. Mixing gas and oil is simple. 16 oz to 5 gal fuel. Never die engine after that as long as you maintain it right. That is a no oil or low oil alarm going off. Is there more than a half gallon of oil in the remote tank? Is there a mini tank on the engine above the carbs? It has to be topped off always or an alarm comes.

    Get a nice chopper raise it. Another 3or 4 inches you can probably fly it up to 70. Also some stainless reed

      I look at boats all the time. This basically never happens. And if it does happen, somebody else is usually there first. i saw a flawless daytona eliminator go for $3500, pristine gelcoat and hull interior, no seats, no drivetrain. Total steal and it looked AMAZING

    If possible and you can afford run a test run with the sharrow prop propeller

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  ปีที่แล้ว

      That prop is slow. It’s for efficiency and torque. Not speed.

    You should trim it up more to get more speed, you should get a rooster tail outta that 150

    Get to the chopper! it will be a lot quicker than the over-bladed prop on now (more holeshot, but more drag & less speed)
