    I have this laptop with me for a month now, and while it's not perfect, it's definitely the most versatile laptop I've used. I've gone through 4 laptops over the last two years and I would end up having to sell them after only 6-8 months; But this one I'll probably keep for a minimum of 2-3 years.

      I want to agree with you because it’s so close and that is exactly the sentiment I am excited to have towards it but I won’t feel that way until they upgrade MPP 2.0 to MPP 2.5. That is the only thing holding me back from this device. They had the opportunity to upgrade it for this newest gen that is releasing but they didn’t. maybe they don’t have rights to it yet..?? hopefully the following gen will have it 🙃

    Great review! So a couple of improvements from someone who has tested the final retail unit:
    - The CPU runs at up to 95 watts! In a 10-minute Cinebench loop I repeatedly got a sustained 93-94w throughout (15k score).
    - HDR can be turned on when on battery to achieve peak brightness off the charger. Simply select “optimize for image quality” in Windows HDR settings and hit Win+Alt+B to activate HDR.
    - Battery life is better in final retail models. Me as well as other owners have easily scored 7-8 hours of battery life when web browsing/TH-cam playback.
    Great review again! I know you already sent your review unit back, but just wanted to make others aware of these improvements to expect on the retail models.

    I agree with a point raised by some other reviews and comments regarding the microSD card.
    Since it sits flush with the laptop when inserted, the micro SD card can be treated as an easy (and relatively cheap) storage expansion.

    • @NotebookcheckReviews
      @NotebookcheckReviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      While this is true, it is not the fastest solution. I think you would be better off adding a second NVME drive. Even the cheapest one will perform much better than a micro sd card.

    I think this review has essentially solidified the flow x16 as my next laptop. Im a college student whos basically been wanting a Mac that can run windows. Powerful when needed for content creation, but a long battery life wheb just doing productivity work in Chrome and such. I need a lot of good port options, color accurate display, and hopefully a 16:10 screen.
    The video title seems perfect to my feelings about the x16: nothing in this machine is the top line. (Save for maybe the processor). The gpu is 2nd best, the screen is 2nd best, the battery life (as discussed from retail users and other reviewers) is decent but not the best of the best, the keyboard and trackpad are great but not XPS-level, and the ports (for me at least) are 1 or 2 modifications shy of perfect. Almost nothing about this machine is the absolute best, but its all in a package that compromises in a way Id consider ~almost~ perfect.
    The biggest frustration for me is just the port situation. The micro sd card slot feels like a massive middle finger to content creators when this is clearly a content creation machine. You can adapt micro sd to sd but not vis-versa, come on Asus. Im also a bit nervous about battery life with my 50 Chrome tabs productivity habit, but the 100w usb-c charging support make me comfortable enough to make it work.
    Great review of a great product. I think theres an x16 in my near future =]

      @NotebookcheckReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you for your comment, Josiah. And I am glad we have been able to transport what makes the Flow such a great package.

      I bought it for kinda the same usecase as you. College laptop during the day, and playing some games back at home during the night. I bought the lower tier machine because only that was available in my country, so it has a ryzen 7 and a 3060 with 16gb of RAM.
      Man I love this thing. Absolutly solid battery life, I almost never bring my charger with me to college, or if I need a quick charge 20 minutes is enough to keep it alive for another lecture. And yes there is the PD option too.
      Gaming is what I tought is going to be the biggest compromise, but its handling games far better than my previous zephyrus with an 8th gen i7 and a 2070 did. Absolutely enough gaming performance for me, knowing that if I unplug it I can just toss it into my bag and I have an ultrabook, or a tablet if I want.
      Touchpad is big, responsive and have a good feel to it, and the keyboard is very very good, at least for me, I love laptop keyboards. Im not a big mechanic keyboard kinda guy, altough I have one.
      I would say if you havent already, give it a chance, it is the closest perfect all around laptop that you can buy right now.

      I can not really talk about your use case but I would say the Flow is the better machine overall unless you really need that extra CPU performance from the Intel Chip.
      The Flow has better IO, better surface temps, and the ability to work on the screen directly in tablet mode. GPU performance should be higher too.
      That said, the Creator looks a bit cleaner and offers Thunderbolt connectivity .... it really is a tough choice between these two :O

    • @SuiTsuan_Ong
      @SuiTsuan_Ong ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Z16P seems to heat up very easily and the GPU is limited to 90w, which might be even slower than a full power rtx3060
      For that I would choose the Flow x16 with 3060... just for more comfortable temperature and noise level

    • @oliverkristensen8619

      @@SuiTsuan_Ong I’ve bought the Z16P, and agree that it does heat up quite easily. I am though happy for the full-size SD-card reader and the screen is gorgeous (even though it’s not the same as that mini-led beauty). It’s a little more sleek in the design, but I’d definitely not have minded the X16’s design.
      I’m extremely happy for the intel processor because of my cpu-demanding workflow. It was hard as heck to choose and whatever you get is *chef kiss*

      @@oliverkristensen8619 Glad you are happy with your final decision! I agree on the design part. I also wish flow x16 could have more "creator" or modern vibe in it, that would be perfect.
      TBH I am now also struggling between these 2 exact models for 3D modeling and motion design. But now the convertible form factor and temperature make me lean toward x16. Imagine if I can grab it around and draw... just not sure if it has good enough pen support lol

    • @oliverkristensen8619
      @oliverkristensen8619 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SuiTsuan_Ong I’d dare to say that if the X16 had a full-size SD-Card reader, I’d bought that one instead. Kinda the thing which bummed me the most.
      The Z16P might be a better all-around “traditional” laptop, since you also have a nice 1080p webcam installed.
      But if you don’t use SD-Cards, wouldn’t mind AMD or the 720p webcam, X16 might suit you better.
      But then again again, I truly understand NotebookCheck, I cannot decide for anyone else, as I don’t know you or anyone else preferences. It’s a hard choice, and I hope you figure it out! Either way they’re both fantastic.

      Hi there. Unfortunately, I did not test it. But for it to work, the Flow X16 would have to support USB 4, which I am not sure it does right now.

    Now that I am at this point, I am a bit confused. Which laptop should I consider? The Lenovo Legion 5i Pro (2022) or the ASUS ROG Flow X16 (2022)?I have been a fan of Lenovo for quite awhile, and the 5i PRO is just a better option, but when ASUS came out with the X16 for gamers and creators, it was really the better approach for all types of consumers.
    I love to sketch and make renders. The Legion 5i Pro doesn't support touch or a stylus, but the X16 does.
    There are not so many gaming 2-in-1s with a 3060 or 3070Ti, so the X16 is more appealing.
    I have decided 90% that I am going to buy a Lenovo 5i Pro; the other 10% I am not sure about (touch screen and stylus).
    So that I can't decide which to go for now: ASUS or Lenovo, can you share your thoughts about it or which should I consider? Thank you.

      Tough choice. If you are after the best possible performance, then the Legion 5 Pro would be your choice. But it is also a lot bigger (thicker and heavier). The Asus has the better display and is a bit sleeker, and of course, you have the added flexibility, it being a convertible. None of them will be a bad choice, but you have to consider what suits your needs best.

    I despise the frequent excuse of high noise under load (here 50 ~55dB) by saying that most other "gaming" notebooks were alike. A bad noise design must not serve as an excuse. The comparison ought to be what has been achieved at best: 39dB. This notebook fails at the compromise between speed and noise. By far most dGPU notebooks fail at it. Compromise at its worst! --robert jasiek

    • @NotebookcheckReviews
      @NotebookcheckReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We had this argument before. In a perfect world, we would get relatively thin, portable notebooks with high-performing components at reasonable noise levels. But apparently, this is not possible with the technology we have at the moment. The noise levels you mentioned from our tests are from the 1-hour torture test, which is hardly representative of an everyday use case scenario. So, for the most part, the laptop is much quieter and a lot closer to your ideal noise levels.

    • @NoName-zf6nr
      @NoName-zf6nr ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NotebookcheckReviews For the thin & light, there is only the MacBook Pro, especially 16" M1 Pro, for which someone has measured the maximum of 45dB under full load. So currently, this seems to be the optimum for the ultra-thin notebooks. Then we have the some 2cm chassis class, for which Gigabyte Aero 16 3070 TI is a typical representative with 22.4mm and, as somebody has measured, 47.2dB. Too much for me, but, although that notebook is not really designed for low noise, it shows that Windows / Linux notebooks with up to 3070 TI at ca. 110W could reach about 45dB with better designed cooling. Another class is about 3cm thick and restricted in TDPs to ca. 45W CPU and 80W GPU; about 43dB can be achieved there. We can go down to 39dB by also increasing thickness to circa 35mm.
      So, sorry, you are wrong - current technology is available to achieve these lower noise levels despite acceptable chassis thicknesses! The primary problem is often not technology but is very insufficient cooling design for almost all notebooks, which therefore are in the 48 ~66db range. The secondary problem is design for too high TDP or too little choice in user settings to restrict them to 45W / 80W for those wishing low noise. The tertiary problem is too infrequent testing of such user settings whenever they are possible.
      For all thicknesses, too few notebook designs are done well as to achieving as low noise as possible. Only Apple does it consistently for its notebooks. (Again, not because only M1 would allow it. x64 also allows it. It is because other manufacturers by far do not care enough.)
      Windows notebook manufacturers go for speed and too much testers emphasise speed. Both neglect, downplay or deemphasise noise. Your downplaying is part of the problem. It is wrong that Apple has a perceived monopoly on compromises with low noise and long battery life as given and mandatory features. The Windows world is already decades late towards that direction and we must reveal that so that the situation does not continue for another two decades.

    • @NotebookcheckReviews
      @NotebookcheckReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, since we have this discussion, it means that we have tested noise at almost all setting levels for each laptop. So you can't say that we are down playing anything.
      In my opinion, the Macbook Pro is a totally different story since it doesn't really have a dedicated GPU and therefore has just one heat source to cope with.
      Many Laptops allow you to run your machine in silent modes, which is usually doing precisely what you asked for: restricting the power available and achieving a lower noise level. This is what we mentioned in our review for the FLOW.
      And there are devices like the XMG Neo 15 that allow you to manually select that wattage you want your CPU to run at.
      And it's reasonably thin and compact:
      While I agree with you that performance isn't anything, it is what most people are after and at the same time almost no usecase is stressing both the CPU and GPU at the same time to 100%. So it makes much more sense for manufacturers to tune their systems for a broader range of use cases.
      Again I'm not saying that you are wrong. We definitly want and need quieter (gaming)-laptops, and Apple and also AMD seem to have noticed and are trying to make their Chips more efficient. Therefore the industry has understood this trend and demand.
      But it might be a slow process, and in the meantime, the options to restrict heat and noise output at the expense of performance is implemented in almost every device, and as I stated earlier, we usually test almost all power modes if we get the chance.
      But please also keep in mind that testing devices is a time-consuming process, so we might not always get the chance to test all use case scenarios.

    • @NoName-zf6nr
      @NoName-zf6nr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just one thing I don't buy: your claim that NBC tested most power modes. Usually, it tests three modes, such as Silent, Default, Extreme. Only recently, very few tested devices get noise / performance tests of several modes.

    • @NotebookcheckReviews
      @NotebookcheckReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      See, we are working on it ;)
      As I said these kind of tests are very time consuming and sometimes we just do not have the time to test all the different settings combinations. I want to include noise tests for more videos in the future, but this is also not without its (technical) difficulties.
      So yeah .... we are on it :)
      Thank you for your feedback, as always!

      While screen wobble may look unappealing, wobble by itself does not indicate fragility. Quite often it's the opposite as built-in flex helps relieve pressure points that could otherwise lead to stress fractures.
      And where did you get the idea that mini-LED:s will burn out? I mean, eventually every computer component will burn out but mini-LED:s are not fragile OLED:s. Unless the screen is constantly cooking temperature hot, I don't see a reason for worry. This mini-LED screen should in any case last longer than any laptop OLED screen...
      As for GSync, well, the X16 does have some kind of adaptive sync. I saw a user specifically mentioning it had "Freesync Premium Pro" but I cannot confirm this.
      Ultimately, though, it depends on what you prioritize the most. Personally, I was dead set on getting the Lenovo Legion 7i but now I'm equally certain on getting the Asus ROG Flow X16 instead, because of the combination of a mini-LED screen (something which was promised for the 7i as well but either delayed or canceled) and convertible form factor, with touchscreen and stylus to boot. To me, those two features alone are worth sacrificing some overall performance as well as sacrificing a few non-essential bells and whistles such as Advanced Optimus and per-key RGB lighting.

    What is Asus thinking? If they're serious about the egpu solution, there's no need to sell the laptop with a dGPU. If they think people need more than one GPU for machine learning etc. they should make the dGPU daisy chainable (preferably physically stackable) and keep the laptop itself an iGPU only solution and cram it with the biggest battery they can fit for better battery life on the road. This way people have the best of both worlds. They provide a solution to a problem that they fixed within the parameters of this laptop in the first place.
