    G9 is such an underrated camera, it features so much then most cameras and no one talks about it. I think people critique the G9 for its sensor size, it’s honestly my favorite camera I’ve ever had

    This video renews my faith in m43 a little. I've been using my little GX85 and other Lumix variants for years. I LITERALLY JUST SECONDS AGO cancelled my order for the new S5.. because I can't see investing in Leica mount and buying new glass for a cam that sucks in the AF department. The G9 is an EFFING monster deal right now. So, it's either that or Fuji X-T4. Thanks for helping me feel a bit better. This was a solid vid and I looks like you do great wedding work!

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers man...that's very kind of you! Yeah, the G9 is legendary, especially if you're a hybrid shooter. Apart from in REALLY low light, I still think you can get some amazing results on m43, especially when using prime lenses. I just looked at your channel and subbed...you've got some great, creative content! I think you'd be very happy with the G9 as it's the camera I always take out if I know I want to capture both photos and videos. The burst rate for photos is nuts! I usually just use it with face-detection auto-focus and the vast majority of my shots are spot on.

    Sony is brilliant at wooing the vlogger review crew on TH-cam. This unfortunately means the G9 gets a lot less love than it deserves. It delivers superb 4K.

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I couldn't agree more! The G9, and other micro four thirds cameras in general, still have some incredible benefits compared against newer (and much more expensive alternatives) from other manufacturers. I think these are too often forgotten about!

      Wedding Film Geeks In terms of feature sets, Panasonic makes the best feature set for any camera available. For me, the animation and L. Monochrome D are my favorites, but 4K Photo is also huge in expanding the usefulness of digital cameras, but these things go over the heads of many.

    Great video and well put together! G9 is my main camera and I love it! I use my G85 for those longer recordings if need be but rarely use for what I do. The only thing I wish it had was the GH5 option of pre-setting focus points in camera where it completes a focus pull. I would love to have feature. That said the G9 has a newer and faster processor, slightly better auto focus and slightly better IBIS and less expensive. Both great cameras. Blessings!

      Thanks Scott. The G9 is an incredible camera, especially for hybrid shooters! The ergonomics are pretty much perfect in my opinion. I forgot to mention the missing focus transition function in my review so thanks for mentioning it here to bring it to people's attention. It's a lovely feature that I'm sure Panasonic could bring over to the G9 if they wanted to. Those benefits of the G9 do make it a very sweet deal though!

    I wish Panasonic never scrap their M43 line. It's just too good in my opinion especially for those people that love light nimbal setups. Yes it isn't full frame but my customers don't care they just want everything covered at their wedding and having a set up that doesn't leave me with aches and pains or sweating by the end of the day is more important to me than flexing my full frame lenses/camera that leaves me exhausted very quickly also potentially missing content.

    In the day of many people yell that M43 is bad system, so good to see some people talking good about them. I belief every system had their own strength.
    I prefer RF Style body so I still using my GX8 for both travel (yeah, before this pandemic) and work (most is timelapse and not so intense video work as a non professional), G9 is a little too big for my preference but if I get excellent deal I'm not hersitate to get one............and still hope for new full feature RF style from lumix too.

      Thanks Ittiphon! I agree...M43 offers incredible value for money as well as amazing features! Another benefit that people often overlook is their rock-solid reliability. I've filmed 2.5 hour wedding ceremonies in 4K and never once had overheating problems! What's the point offering 4K full frame if your camera shuts down halfway through a couple's wedding?!

    Every thing you said is true except low light in interior video shots during weddings. I have G85 with Olympus 45 mm f1.8. I don't dare to take it out for interior video shots. For interiors I usually have Nikor 35 mm f1.8 or Tokina 11-16 mm f2.8 with my D3300. The only problem with both G85 and D3300 is the auto focus in dynamic shots. For the videographer that's most stressful, and most of the auto tracking on both cameras in low light is unusable. Strangely, that's a firmware issue but both Nikon nor Panasonic don't care.

  • @kthx1138

    A simple workaround the 30 minute recording time limit is to simply press pause during dead air when no one is speaking during a ceremony. There always are such moments, especially during Catholic ceremonies.

    May I also make a question ? I hope you can enlighten me.
    I am considering buying a camera that I will mostly use for videos (sometimes pictures too).
    I want to record the space in front of me while I walk (with a gimbal) and I will shoot in woods and nature literally following a path and filming.
    What is a good choice for me ? Body + Lenses ? budget around 1000 - 1200 (I can stretch but not too much) roof is around 1500.
    I really hope you can let me know as I am kinda lost.
    Cheers.

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the nice comment. The G9 would be a great choice for that, as you could shoot 4K60. Otherwise an older camera like the G80 - geni.us/6ZenT - would be a lot cheaper and would still shoot 4K but if you wanted slow-mo, you'd need to drop to HD. In terms of lenses, I would go for the Leica 15mm f1.7 - geni.us/ZbyGAa. It's not a zoom but the fast aperture means you could get great results even if shooting in a dark, shaded area. You'd also need to factor in a cheap gimbal if you wanted smooth shots as you walk. The Ronin SC or any similar gimbal would be a great choice. I hope that helps! Ben :)

    Thanks for this video. I got couple on my channel but I'm still struggle with lot of material out of focus. I understand that you use manual focus. What when the subject is moving quickly? Do you switch to autofocus? What aperture you mostly use for such scenes? Thank you! I use Leica 12-60mm and Sigma 16mm f1.4

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're very welcome. When the subject is moving quickly, here are a couple of options to help. If there is plenty of light, shoot with a deep depth of field (high aperture number) to keep as much of the frame in focus as possible. It won't look mega cinematic but at least your subject will be sharper. If you are shooting in low light or need a shallow depth-of-field, I would try to maintain the distance between yourself and the subject. This may involve filming from the side, so they move across the screen, rather than towards you. Or, it could involve moving yourself...so walking backwards as they walk towards you. I just looked at your videos and it looks like you're doing a great job already to be honest! Just keep practicing and you'll continue to keep getting better. Ben :)

    Looking for a b-roll camera with unlimited recording, it's of course the GH5, but also the G90/91/95. But note that that camera has some limitations compared to G9 and GH5. Or you might find the GH4R second hand, which also has V-Log L (but no IBIS).

    Is autofocus now reliable enough for tracking shots? I know that Panasonic tends to hunt a lot, has that been fixed?
    I'm trying to upgrade from a Canon 200D/SL2. Currently my main considerations are a6400, G9, EOS M6mk II, XT4 but it's so hard to find the perfect camera.
    The M6MkII would be the cheapest upgrade since I can just buy an adapter to use my EF lenses seamlessly.
    The G9 has got the best bit depth and bit rates, but I'm still super worried about autofocus.
    I have to do sports events as well, so I need the tracking to lock on to faces without any wobbling or hunting.
    The a6400 would have the best autofocus, but battery life is also world class in dying fast.
    However, it would be advantageous as I intend to get full frame E-mount in future, so I could slowly build my lenses.
    The XT4 has overheating issues apparently and EF adapters have mixed results it seems.
    All I want is for Panasonic to use PDAF or Hybrid AF. No idea why they're so stubborn even after so many generations of M43 cameras.
    Olympus video codecs are too weak of an upgrade to justify spending the money, and their pro lenses are too cost inefficient for me sadly.

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey dude! I just gave up trying to use video autofocus on MFT cameras a long time ago for anything with any shallow depth of field. If you need fast AF for sports, I would AVOID any MFT cameras until they improve things considerably. It's not such a big deal to me as my style of shooting lends itself well to manual focusing. I couldn't agree more with you about Panasonic needing to address this issue though and switch to a more effective AF system!

    Are you using the G9 to record yourself in the youtube video? I ask because you have one in your hand so maybe you have 2?
    I was wondering which lens I should purchase and if there's any key differences between the two because they are both priced at $150 on amazon.
    Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 45-150mm F4.0-5.6 ASPH
    Panasonic Lumix G Lens, 25mm, F1.7 ASPH
    Also do you think it's worth buying the panasonic lumix g 12-60mm f3.5-5.6 lens that comes with the starter kit? It costs $1600 total while the camera g9 by itself is $1000 so an extra $600 for that lens.
    Or perhaps a way better lens could be bought if I spend a little more? Not sure if spending $1500+ would have better value on a better camera but I hear a lot of great things about this one for videos

      @@CameraGeeks I was almost sold on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III until I saw a comparison video with the G9 and they said the G9 gives better video quality so it's reassuring that this can compete so well against a $1500 camera. I wanted to use it as a webcam for live streaming while being able to take good looking videos and photos in lowlight settings since lower aperture seems like one of the most important and biggest factor for cost in a lens? Is there a lens that does well for both landscape and portrait? It'd be nice to take awesome shots of nature and places while traveling + taking good pictures/video of people and my figure collection

      Hi Widar. You're very welcome. I shoot slow mo at 50p so I would need 1/100. If you were shooting 60p, you would be 1/120. You basically have to take your frame rate value and double it. If the exact value is not available, choose the closest number. Hope that helps!

    Hello my friend, thank you for your wonderful tips on using the Panasonic G9. I am learning to use my G9 and would like to know how to seemlessly switch from normal speed to slow mo and back again without using separate clips, do you do this in post or is there a way to do it whilst filming on the G9?

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mike. I'm glad you enjoyed them! If you search TH-cam for the process of "speedramping" you'll find lots of useful information. The basic principle is to shoot in slow motion (I usually use the 120/180 fps mode) and then when you are in the edit, you can choose which bits you want to be slow and which bits should be normal speed. The software will smooth out the changes in speed to make it all look slick! It's a great process to play around with so have fun!

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey @Vitaliy Zavadskyy. The regular battery would definitely not last that long but I imagine you'll encounter this problem with most cameras out there. I'd predict that it would last 1.5-2 hours. However, you still have two options. Firstly, you could buy a dummy battery adapter that has a fake battery on one end and a wall plug on the other end. I'm not sure how safe/reliable these are so definitely do your homework first. Secondly, you could power your camera via a USB power brick connected via the USB-C port. However, I think there are limitations with this method and getting 8 hours would be almost impossible so the fake battery option might be better. You'd just have to read lots of reviews and get a reliable one.

    I just recently found out about this camera while shopping around for cinema cameras on a hobo budget. When paired with an Atomos, are we able to match or surpass the GH5 (with or without external recording)? The main issue I see with the G9 is the limited bitrate and compression scheme, which tends to yield jumpy artifacts in scenes with a decent amount of movement. In theory it all looks promising. What's the reality of the situation? Does the Atomos truly supercharge the G9 or are we still dealing with other flaws in the hardware/software processing pipeling such as debayering which further restrict the benefits of an external recorder's promises? Most of the footage I've seen of this camera is either slow-mo and "cinematic" or borderline shots of trees and leaves with the occasional bird dropping in. Follow-up question: how would the G9 paired with an Atomos stack up against an S5 (with/without Atomos) if we're stricly looking at it from an image quality standpoint and discarding the whole full-frame vs MFT aspect of it all (the S5 has a higher rolling shutter in full-frame mode unless you crop to S35). Thanks for reading my most confusing and random comment!

    How do you record the first dance? Or any dance really with a bit of blurred background? Do you still use manual focus for this purpose, and what do you do to get the best results?

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Lucasz. If there is enough light, we normally film at 4k50p so we can slow it down in the edit. In terms of focusing, I normally use manual focusing and just adjust it as they dance. It's normally a slow dance so easy to do. To get the background nice and blurred, we just film with the aperture wide open and this makes the image as bright as it can be and the background blurry. Hope that helps! Ben

      Hey Johny. I see Roman has already answered your question about recording limits. In terms of zoom lenses, the Sigma 18-35mm with speed booster is hard to beat, as long as you don't mind the heavy weight...th-cam.com/video/SWgyhwD9PH8/w-d-xo.html. It's aperture goes down to 1.2 with the equivalent of a 25-50mm focal range, so it capture creamy bokeh and performs well in low light. If you want a slightly lighter, native lens and have a ton of money to spend, then check out the Leica 10-25. For a longer length zoom lens, the Lumix 35-100 is pretty amazing but the aperture is 2.8, so there's a little less bokeh and it struggles when things get really dark...th-cam.com/video/mJIj6H_G_EY/w-d-xo.html. • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your current zoom lens has incredible range going from wide to telephoto but it's main limitation is its variable aperture; f3.5-5.6. This means it won't work well in low light and it won't achieve a shallow depth-of-field (blurry background) very easily. You've listed quite a lot of different uses but I think you are looking for a wide to medium zoom with a fixed, fast aperture. My recommendation would be a the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8. It's a wide to medium zoom and the constant f2.8 aperture means you'll get decent results in low light and a nice blurry background. If you shoot in very low light a lot, try the 25mm f/1.7. This is cheaper but is not a zoom lens, so you need to move the camera closer to the subject or further away depending on the type of shot you want. The benefit of this lens is that it's EVEN BETTER in low light and you will also get a REALLY blurry background and a very cinematic image. I hope this helps. Ben :)

      Pretty much everything else is amazing, especially for photographers and hybrid shooters. If strong continuous AF performance is not high up on your list of needs as a videographer, there are a lot of other high-level features at a competitive price. I mainly work in weddings and have been shooting with manual focus for nearly five years. I've recently been using the G9's fast single-AF to hit focus on a static person/subject, and record shots quickly and easily. If you're filming video of something with fast-moving objects, like sports events, this would be an awful camera. Although for sports photography it would be amazing. Just got to compare the cameras pros and cons to your own particular needs. It ticks a lot of boxes for a lot of people.
