    this is the best footage I've seen of the S5 so far I initially wrote it off as a camera choice due to some poor TH-cam examples, but this footage is making me rethink that decision

      Thanks Jon! I really appreciate the kind compliment...it means a lot! Keep an eye out this coming week, as I've got a new video about my favourite Lumix S5 lenses with tons of example shots. I'm loving the footage I'm getting from the S5 when shooting in V-Log and Sigma lenses 😍!

    Sold my 5diii and glass for the gh5. Now looking at s5 but...what happens if you press shutter release when filming a video? GH5 you lost half a second but still got a full size image. how is this on the s5? Sad to miss that Wex offer!

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not tried that yet, so I'll give it a go next time I have the camera with me. I would imagine that if it worked on the GH5, they would try to bring it over to the S5 though? That Wex offer has ended but they do currently have a new one with £200 trade-in bonus and £300 cash back. This might be an even better one to be honest!

      Hey Gorgeous Media. Your comment really made me laugh 🤣. Yeah, I was trying to be all strong-minded and reminding myself that it's the cameraman rather than his camera that captures great footage...but then they offered the £400 bonus and I just broke 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣! How are you finding it so far?

      @@CameraGeeks It is nice to have the familiarity of a Lumix camera (it does feel very GH5ish) but with the knowledge that you can push it that bit further! I agree with you - it is the GH5 on steroids. I bought the 85mm f1.8 and it's rather gorgeous so I'm going to add the other primes in that series when they are released. Then that's it; I will never need anything else... EVER! 🤔😆

      It suits by photo needs which is mainly casual family portraits. Autofocus with native l-mount lenses is responsive but not quite as fast as my previous G9 camera with MFT lenses, which was like lightning! If you were needing something that hits focus ultra fast and has a higher burst rate, this might not be the one. However, for general purpose shooting, I think it's great!

  • @NowyKurs

    Considering. Being a person who owns Canon and working in Canon eco system, Im not sure if I should get S5 or R6. Canon reliability always keeps you in safe position. Another system and lens choice make unnecessary hustle.

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely agree about Canon being reliable but Panasonic are incredibly reliable too...that's why they have (in general) a very loyal and satisfied user base. I know a lot of Panasonic video shooters who still shoot with Canon glass using adaptors. However, if you are a hybrid/photo shooter, maybe stick with Canon because the autofocus on the Sigma MC-21 adaptor is pretty awful. Just some thoughts :)

    • @NowyKurs
      @NowyKurs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CameraGeeks yes. Im more a hybrid system user and much prefer this format to keep all in one. In most cases EOS R it's more than enough, that's why I'm not sure if I would switch to Sony or Panasonic just for the hype. Having one eco system makes things less complicated in pro life. If you on the timeline of exploration than the more equipment from various brands you have, the more creative your work can be. That's a certain phenomenon in camera world. I made some changes to my gear recently, swapping my EOS M6 to GX80 Lumix (for 4K advantage) and not much appreciate, even see the huge disadvantages with the lack of what I get used to with Canon camera. Excellent video! Finally, I have decided to go for this camera. I have one more doubt left... Is the S5 4k60 aps-c crop workable for you? Is there a loss of video quality? I've thought of recording everything at 4K with cropping, both 30p and 60p shots. Will I be losing video quality? Will there be more noise in the image? Thanks and sorry for my bad English!

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! I think you'll be really happy with this camera! The APS-C crop means you lose a little bit of detail because it's using a smaller part of the sensor. However, the image still looks great and you'd only notice the different if you are comparing like for like...which most of your viewers won't be doing! The increase in noise will probably only be noticeable when shooting in low light to be honest. Let me know how you get on, as you may have already received it now.

  • @alexstevenscreativemedia

    I'm in the same boat! I use my 2 Gh5 cameras for weddings and my 6D for photos. Looking for a new photo camera so I can make my 117k-actuations-6D my second body. Thought it would make sense if I'm spending money on any camera gear that I can use it for video as well, since when I need to have a third camera body (if I'm on a solo gig) I would have to borrow or be stuck using my 6d as a c cam, which as you know, doesn't hold up these days.
    I looked into the sony a7 iv, except have seen lots of overheating reviews, and with shooting weddings, I need something I can trust to shoot all day long takes.
    Ideally, I would go sony a7s iii for their 4k 120p, but for photo mode, it just isn't enough pixels, which leads me to the alpha 1, which I can't really justify since I'm just doing freelance on the side of my current full time job (still in the video/media field though)
    Since there's a deal on for the s5 at $2000 CAD, I might give it a try!
    One question for you - how do you find the autofocus for photos while using adapted lenses with the MC-21. I'm wondering if I will ever fight not having continuous autofocus, which I think I can live without, and if I can't, I could just buy native glass or use my 6D if it's still around.
    I feel like the only benefit would be for sports or subjects moving quickly towards you?
    Do you find any limitations or things that are annoying to work around coming from Canon for photography?

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Alex. I used to own a 6D myself and it was a great camera apart from needing Magic Lantern to get decent exposure and focus assist tools, plus the unlimited recording. I have been soooo happy with the S5! I feel like it gives me the gorgeous cinematic look I got from my 6D but this time in 4K, and in a camera body and menu system that has been designed for video. Saying that, it's also a fantastic stills camera too. In terms of lenses, I found that using canon lenses with the MC-21 is fine if you're doing manual focus only, even for photos. I shoot all my wedding videos in manual focus anyway so there was no issue. However, I have now switched to native lenses and they perform extremely well for both photo and video. The Lumix S prime lenses are great value for money, especially if you buy second hand. In terms of gripes with the camera, the crop on 4K50/60 is slightly annoying (1.6x) but you soon get used to it. The autofocus for video is good but not up there with Sony or Canon. It works better with Panasonic lenses and can actually be usable in a lot of situations. However, I wouldn't want to take any risks at weddings so I still with manual focus where I have full control. Hope that all helps!

    Nice info! I currently have a GH5 and a bunch of native lenses as well as the Sigma 18-35. I'm thinking about investing in a second hand GH5s as a backup and for use in low light. How would you compare low light capabilities between the GH5s and the S5?
    Cheers

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey dude. The low light performance on both the GH5S and the S5 will be a massive improvement compared to what you are used to with the GH5. On the GH5, I would find ISO800 decent and 1600 acceptable at a push. With the GH5S, 6400 was decent and 12800 was acceptable at a push; so three extra stops of light available meaning you get a cleaner image and the ability to shoot dark scenes, like a first dance, in slow motion. With the Lumix S5, the low light performance is the best yet, I'd say that ISO 12800 is very decent! I've not really gone beyond that but you'll see an IS0 12800 shot in the video so you should be able to judge for yourself.

      Hi Kenneth. The general rule is that video AF is best when shooting with native Lumix lenses with 4k50/60. I found both the Lumix 20-60mm and the 24-70 Pro lenses to perform really well with Face tracking when shooting 4K50. However, if video AF is a main priority for you, I think Sony and Canon are still some way ahead.

    That is nice movie I was waiting too long for it. Thats great that you are telling about using adapter with Canon EF lenses because I have headache when I need to think about my next gear... Now I am shooting with Canon 6dmk2, I have a lot of Canon EF lenses but I need to change for something which have 4k50p. I am shooting weddings and I need camera on which I can trust and I don't need to be worry if my camera will overheat before wedding oath or not. Panasonic S5 is really following me until the premiere date and I am still thinking about it but I cannot rent it in my country so maybe you could help me with my questions:
    1. Did you use it with Ronin-S? Is Focus Wheel working with non L-mount lenses? I don't want to sell all my EF lenses and I want to use that camera with adapter - thats for sure.
    2. Is that truth that AF through Sigma MC-11 adapter is working only with Sigma lenses? And AF is not working when I put on Canon lens?
    3. Is that truth that for 4k50p I only need SD UHS-I cards? I was watching some movie where someone told that I don't need UHS-II cards because 4k50p I can shoot on UHS-I - that would be so awesome.
    4. Can you trust single point AF with non L-mount lenses? I mean, is it usable like on weddings I am recording my couple and someone in background is cheering or there is something else happening so I need to be fast and turn back and use AF to focus on background - is that good?
    5. Can you upload some sample clips - even this which you used in this movie? I won't upload them on my channel or even sell them. I just want to try if my PC will handle 4k and how this material will be good for my grading.
    6. Stabilization - is it working with EF lenses through adapter?
    7. File sizes - how about that? What size have 1hour material in 4k 25/50p in the lowest bitrate and what size have 1hour material in 1080p 25/50p with the highest bitrate? Because if there is no much difference about the two formats then if I would have 1080p wedding I can shoot it in 4k lowest bitrate and it better for me to have 4k material downscale to 1080p - it will be sharper? (I quess so).
    8. APS-C Crop - I am looking mostly for camera with APS-C sensor but there is no other on market right now (except Fuji XT-4) but here in 4k50p I have APS-C crop - that's great for me because I want to buy sigma 18-35 and sigma 50-100 (which are made only for APS-C Cameras) and... Can I shoot 1080p 25/50p with APS-C crop and how about quality is it the same like with full frame size or is that really bad?
    There is a lot of questions but you would help me a lot about that! Thank you so much and I really appreciate your time.
    Have a great day!

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Mitchelson! It was a tough decision as I really loved the GH5 and the whole MFT system in general. It was the £400 discount that pushed me over the edge. By trading in most of my MFT gear, I've only spent around £400 extra to completely change over to the new system. I agree that some of the L-Mount lenses are pretty expensive but I've found the Sigma Art primes to be great value for money, especially if you find a good deal second hand. Can't fault your decision to hang on a while longer though and see what Panasonic has up it's sleeve next 😀!

    I was absolutely wanting this camera until I found the autofocus on video mode isn't anywhere near as good as Sony, Canon or Nikon and the burst fram speed is only 9fps. For me those two things were a deal breaker. I used to have a GH5 and loved it and it's 12fps burst mode but the very high amount of noise at ISO settings above 800 on the GH5 was a real pain. I mean noise reduction in software can be used but then you get soft video so I sold my GH5 and am now saving up for a Nikon Z6II which has excellent 4k video, slightly better image quality than the GH5, very low levels of noise at high ISO settings and is capable of a burst rate of 14fps. I always photograph anything using burst except when tripod mounted doing landscapes because shooting everything using burst mode gives me the best way of getting a sharp photo. I just sort between the 5 or 6 photos taken using burst mode and see which is the sharpest then bin the rest.

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've actually found the video autofocus to be pretty decent when using Panasonic lenses and shooting in 50/60p. It's a massive improvement from the GH5 and pretty usable in most situations. I agree it's not up there with Canon and Sony but Panasonic are getting a lot closer than they have been in the past.

      You're really going to love this camera for both stills and video! It's definitely worth getting a couple of native lenses as the MC21 isn't great for any kind of autofocus from my experience. The Sigma 18-35mm is a fantastic partner in crime to the S5 when using manual focus though. You should see a very big jump in quality from your C100! • @raksh9

      To answer my own question: the Sigma MC21 has one touch AF during video with EF mount lenses, but it is slow and sporadic. I struggle with it, but it works 70% of the time. Native L mount lenses are the way to go if autofocus is important.

    • @CameraGeeks

      Hey Adrian. My wedding video business is called Bramblehedge Wedding Videos. I've not had chance to shoot a wedding with the S5 yet but you'll find lots of my GH5 and GH5S wedding films there.

      How’s the s5 working out for you?

  • @glennsak
    @glennsak 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had the GH5 and loved the video (never stills) features. I want to go full frame but don't like Sony bodies or Canon's overheating issues. With the GH6 taking so long to arrive, I want to get the S5 for stills and video!

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be a fantastic choice. The video quality it produces is outstanding and being able to capture photos with the full frame look and much less grain is a huge benefit. AF performance for stills is good but not the best though. It's been great for portraits and slow to medium moving subjects. I don't think it would be fast enough for things like sports though. Hope that helps!

    Great video and insights. I thought you couldn't customize buttons. Thanks!

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks my friend! The S5 doesn't have dedicated function buttons like the GH5, which is a shame, but you can still customise the regular buttons to suit your preferences.

      Thank you so much! It's a fantastic camera and I really love the full frame look 😍, for both photos and videos. In terms of photography, the AF performance isn't as fast as the G9, but still plenty fast enough for family portraits, which is my main area of photography. The video AF on the other hand is much better on the S5, especially if you buy Panasonic lenses and shoot at 50/60p!

  • @Superz3ro

    I do not quite agree that it is a GH5 on steroids, it feels more like a full frame version of the Lumix G90/91/95, with Hi-Res mode, and the Dual Native ISO. Even if it were to be compared to the G9, the G9 has nearly three times the burst rates. A GH5 on steroids would imply it has all the same video features as the GH5,including Raw recording, which it does not. The GH5 also has six function buttons, the S5 has one. Maybe they will come out with an H version of the S5...

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts SuperZero. I completely understand your point about the dedicated function buttons...it's a shame they are missing. However, all of the other buttons are still customisable, so I have been able to assign my favourite features to other buttons and joystick movements. When I chose the title "GH5 on steroids", I was mainly referring to huge benefits that the full frame sensor brings to the table; more shallow depth of field and MUCH better low light performance.
