    The majority, if not all of the 70’s Columbo episodes’ finale are packed of mixed emotion that in the end you were not sure if you should feel relieved, happy that the murderer finally got caught , or that the whole thing was just incredibly sad that leaves you reflecting in your head all the “what if” scenario that could had reversed the outcome.

      Most of the time, the murderer was really getting the screws put on them by the victim, and they had such great engaging actors in this show. It's impossible to not like many of the Villains.

    My favorite Greek tragedy Columbo ending. He killed out of pride, and there's always something thrilling and moving about a great one's fall. The Carsini and Colonel episodes had a similar feel--passion and principle in those cases.

    A Columbo episode that somehow features Mexican legends Ricardo Montalbán, Emilio 'El Indio' Fernandez, Jorge Rivero, Evita 'Chachita' Muñoz, Pedro Armendáriz Jr and a young A Martinez is something worth watching. Excellent story, masterful direction and my all time favorite TV detective. Blessings to all from San Juan PR 🇵🇷.

    Funny thing, as with so many "All or nothing" Columbo endings, if Montoya had, in the face of so many witness, including his own daughter, dug deep and found some forgotten courage, it would have completely sunk the case.

    • @banannakis6723
      @banannakis6723 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I always thought that it showed he had no courage over the fact that he was willing to kill a man to keep his secret. Even though I doubt Hector would have told anyone. Montoya killed a man to protect his reputation, while a man with more courage would probably not have been afflicted by someone knowing he had failed.

The kind of narcissistic pride he had that wouldn't admit to others or himself any kind of human frailty is cowardly. Yet, it is a kind of magnificent arrogance that makes the ending tragic and the whole episode compelling. I think it was particularly effective in dealing with another culture in showing in 3 dimensions with subtlety and respect. Back then, nearly everything Mexican was a caricature.

    This is basically a reupload from 9 months ago when its title was "Columbo Solves The Matador Case" It also seems to be a sequel to the episode where Columbo goes on a cruise ship to Mexico and solves the murder of a singer on board committed by Robert Vaughn's character. It even mentions earlier in the episode how it was all over the news in Mexico how Columbo solved the murder on the cruise ship. The Mexican police commander wanted Columbo to solve the case because if he investigated and it lead nowhere, his police job would be in Jeopardy such was the Matador's power.

    I'm carefully watching how Ricardo Montalbán expresses fear in his close-ups when the bull begins to threaten him. Montalbán does a superb job, totally in character and 100% credible. He doesn't overdo the look of fear. Rather, Montalbán's character is a proud man who struggles to conceal his fear and his frozen state. And you can see that struggle in Montalbán's face.
