      Yeah a couple of Columbos shows went kind of off the rails. Explaining how a murder is committed and keeping the plots fresh each week was tough. They really hit rick bottom in that department with the one where a robot helped Columbo solve a mystery. Lol

    I love Columbo's reaction at 9:50, when Justin says "My father doesn't like to see me fail!"

    I was a freshman or sophomore at Cal. State University, Northridge, when they were filming a lot of the campus shots. I had a morning class and saw a bunch of filming activity (that happened a lot around the L.A. area). I was curious what they were filming and asked a crew member who told me, 'Columbo.' In the 70s, I had grown up in Chicago watching Columbo with the family, and we moved to the L.A. area in 1979. So, while I had seen a lot of filming going on (including a CHiPs episode a couple blocks from my house) including E.T., the outdoor shots to the old prime time soap opera, Falcon's Crest, this actually had a bit more meaning as it wasn't just any old movie or TV show. Probably my favourite of the newer episodes in the 80s. Its slightly different from usual as its not until this moment, at the very end of the episode, that the killers realise Columbo is onto them and actually a lot cleverer than they thought. This normally happens much earlier in an episode as Columbo gradually pulls apart the killers alibi or motive or the cause of death and it becomes a duel between the killer and Columbo.
    But here, the killers think Columbo is fool throughout the episode and can't believe their luck that such an idiot is on the case whilst us in the audience get to see that Columbo has been onto them almost from the very start.

      @robbiereilly 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Definitely. Also, the music plays a huge part in any TV show or movie. And the transition of more contemporary 'lite FM' style music tended to dilute the urgency of the stories. I wish the latter episodes had stuck to the same incidental music (and closing theme music) as from earlier episodes. TV producers often blow this very elementary point. In their rush to 'modernize' or 'update' a TV show they start playing around with the theme music, oftentimes distorting it, and usually ruining it in the process. Fans love their shows and that includes the music. By changing it, you're changing a 'character' in the same way fans wouldn't like anyone else to play Columbo or Barney Miller or Hawkeye Pierce. We want those same actors to play those parts, not anyone else. Same with the music. Keep the music almost identical to the way it aired originally and the fans will love you for it. Change it at your peril.
      Clearly, the later episodes of Columbo suffered on many levels, the music being only one, but an important one for tone and atmosphere of an episode. If you don't believe me, hit the mute button every time incidental music plays in a classic TV show like Columbo. Chances are, you'll be missing 80% of the show's audio.

      Actually they'll try the Miranda defense to throw out the confessions. Columbo knows it, but he has more than enough evidence to convict them, so he probably had them confess to bring them down, even though the confessions won't be admissible. Miranda kicks in during quasi-arrest, and it was obvious that it was the situation when Columbo asked them why they did it. A reasonable person would know s/he could not leave at quasi-arrest. It is a safeguard against coerced confessions, even though Justice Uncle Thomas doesn't like it. Most Americans don't understand that Miranda is only for confessions against self-incrimination. Otherwise, Columbo has probable cause for arrest, which is a different amendment (4th vs 5th).

    Columbo pulled a similar trick many years earlier on the police commissioner who killed his wife. Like with these killers, Columbo fed the commissioner false information about a place the killer would be tempted to plant incriminating evidence to try to frame someone else for the murder, in that case jewelry in a burglar’s supposed apartment. Turned out to be an apartment Columbo had recently rented himself but led the commissioner to believe was the burlgar’s place.

    Every Monday my brother and I get together and watch 2 or 3 Columbo episodes. We're also going to expand it a bit. Now that we both got the Cooking With Columbo book we might just make some of the recipes to eat while we watch. The book is available as a Kobo ebook or through Amazon

    Really liked this episode when I watched it as a child. But as a grown up I have to say, the best ones are the ones where you can empathise with the murderer, and partially want them to get away. These two had no redeeming qualities, so you're not conflicted while watching Columbo catch them.
    My favourite episode is "make me a perfect murder". it was pure torture:)

      There's an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger that has an ending like that. Walker is tracking down a rich boy dealing drugs. His father is a prominent citizen. Long story short, Walker convinces the father to let him bring down the boy (If Walker's wrong, he'd quit the rangers.) The father sees with his own eyes what his son is doing, and makes the hard decision to not bail him out this time.

    This is one my favorite episodes. I just LOVED watching these 2 arrogant shots slowly plummet. Once our detective figured out what-was-what, which did not take long, its "off to prison they go - not college". I'd would have given a lot to visit them after trial, sentencing and their new dorm in one of those rough pods. Would not take long to wipe that smile off their faces while their parents are begging and pleading for leniency. Wow! This one I really enjoyed watching "Professor" Columbo. 😆
