I do like the line “The only thing that’s given me any pleasure in this case.” From their very first meeting, Fisher tries to wow him with all the pleasures and power afforded by his position - a water bed, a crane lift, an offer to be the inspiration for a movie, the power of light and shadow. And at the end of the chase, the only pleasure Columbo found _was_ the end of the chase.
9:10 I know a lot of people hate this moment or find it silly, but in those brief seconds where Columbo bows in the spotlight and is wearing the Ringleader costume, I gasped and said to myself aloud, “Wow, that’s interesting!” Because it is! When have we ever seen something like this in Columbo before? Something that’s not quite reality, but instead ambitiously portrays the fragmented mind of a murderer who’s out of touch with reality. There are hints throughout the episode that Brady is mentally unstable, so in this moment, he’s probably hallucinating Columbo as some terrifying, all-knowing puppet-master, and for me, it was very effective. I honestly admire the team behind the new series for trying different things like this.

My favorite part of this is when Columbo reveals he knew Brady's actors were trying to fool him. Because it didn't take any kind of cleverness at all. Just a single degree of follow up. All he did was go to the studio manager and say "I'm looking for two extras, a bridesmaid and a nurse. Can you tell me which sets they're filming on?" For all Brady's cleverness, he was LAZY.
I think this is the only time Columbo utterly humiliated the murderer in such a ostentatious way.
"I must confess, I'm a corner turner. Is there a penalty for that?"
"I'll need you to surrender your hands, sir..."

Fisher Stevens to me, is a highly underrated actor. He should have been a bigger star.
He's best known for the Short Circuit movies. But he was an amazing bad guy in Hackers. And did a great job here.

I mostly watched 70's Columbo , but tonight I'll be watching this episode.
I guess you could say the murderer short circuited.
I love me some Fisher Stevens! I absolutely love his villain in this episode of Columbo... some say part of its character was inspired in Steven Spielberg, who coincidentally directed the first episode of Columbo (not counting the pilots).
Everytime I see Fisher Stevens I hear him say *Ooooooh Newton Crosby" [Indian Accent]
Never underestimate Colombo, he only plays the incompetent goofball just to catch the killers out when they least expect it, getting them to incriminate themselves by confessing to the murder they committed.
The killers realised too late that Colombo was not the fool they thought he was.
Despite the dismissive sneers cops give to shows like this, I'll bet the farm that there isn’t one among them who wouldn't love to break just one case in such a fashion.😂
Another excellent finale with the lieutenant getting his man in his own intuitive way 👏

This has always been one of my favorite Columbos because I have had the biggest crush on Molly Hagen who played Ruth Jernigan.
She also played Victoria Chase in Butterfly in Shades of Grey with William Shatner.

Do you notice that in all episodes (I'm pretty sure all) the villain is someone wealthy or has political or corporate power and they all sneer at the Columbo until the end.

sad to watch. Making a total mockery of Columbo's character. The 70s Columbos were so much better. Back then, even though most of his cases would never lead to convictions- they were great episodes and Peter Falk WAS Columbo. These later episodes, is just Falk trying to act like Columbo-- too bad.
