Columbo already knew why when he asked, "Is Montoya a vain man?" It's a beautiful ending out of Greek tragedy: pride goeth before the fall. Bad as Montoya is, you bleed for him and that daughter because he had been a great man. Aristotelian catharsis.

One of my favourites. And what makes me smile is the slight confusion at the end, when sanchez and Colombo are stuck a bit longer than they should be in the scene, because Colombo is meant to get in the back door of the car, but he's gesturing for Sanchez to get in. I don't think that was scripted.

At the very end of the clip, Columbo opens the police car door. Peter Falk must have been on autopilot a bit, he opened it as if he had just explained the motive and was arresting the señor. Then as great actors do, the señor notions twice to give the cue, and Falk (Columbo) flawlessly realizes his error and shakes his hand to explain the hand motion and gets in. Great moment of good tv

@@sadderthanyou7793 Yes I know what the Beaufort scale is. What Columbo is describing would be force 5 on it. But this topic is not about that scale. A 30km/h wind is a heavy wind in the context of this episode about bullfighting if you are a matador trying to fight a bull in it, or even if you are just cycling your bike against it.

@@johnfinnegan8474 There's nothing relative about it and it's NOT "heavy winds". It's merely a breeze. The writer of this line had no idea how to convert from mph to kmh.

@@sadderthanyou7793 we will agree to disagree then, no point in getting all worked up over it. If the average person was trying to cycle their bicycle into a 30km/h headwind I doubt they would consider it to be merely a breeze.

@power2084 Sooooo in order to boycott something you have to stop going to it? I can see that rational thinking isn't your strong point (along with spelling).
That's why it's impossible to boycott women's soccer because no one watches it in the first place. Not a lot of bullfights in Quebec anyway. But you knew that. Wimp.

Columbo had enough to prove that Montoya was lying, but not enough to prove that he killed Hector or even a hint of a motive for the crime. Montoya was a braggart about his bravery against bulls, said he dealt with that same bull days before. Seeing him freeze up in front of a crowd told everyone the truth and Montoya's motive for killing a lone witness to his cowardice.
However he did have such moments where he endangered himself or someone else. In one he relied on a killer trying to use a guillotine on him, so he switch the safety plates on the collar to endure he'd get the safe side. Had the guy NOT tried to kill Columbo, Columbo would have been killed.

Columbo developed a theory that Montoya killed hector merely because he saw him showing fear in the bull ring. He knew it sounded so outlandish if he told it to anybody they would laugh at him. So the only way to show people was to arrange a practical demonstration which he arranged with Hectors son Curo.
