    Absolutely classic Columbo episode. The Lieutenant very publicly takes down the most arrogant, obnoxious murderer in the whole series - Kingston runs out of bluster and is literally lost for words in the final scene.

    I love watching this clip just to see the extraordinary range of emotions that Columbo puts Ross Martin's character through. Ross's character starts out the scene supremely confident and in control. But Columbo tears down each layer of Ross's facade until he's a broken, exposed man. Then, Ross's character is given hope that his plan will work after all when Columbo reveals that he's looking for fingerprints. But when Columbo reveals that his team is looking for Columbo's own prints and he explains why, Ross's glimmer of hope vanishes and we're left with a totally destroyed man. While the gotcha is one of the cleverest in the Columbo oeuvre, It's Ross Martin's performance that makes the whole thing so magical and a work of art.

      Agree. Ross Martin was a superb actor and he really steals the show in an episode of Rod Serling’s “Night Gallery” he performed in around the same time (“The Other Way Out”).

    Can we please get some kudos to the most bored, dead pan delivery of "yeah" I've ever heard? That forensics officer is just so done with everything.

    This has a perfect ending. Columbo is very tricky in his investigation.

    Love that there are two Chevrolet Novas in the shot where Columbo arrives on the scene.

      You've got a terrific eye for detail. Yes, the Chevrolet Nova was used as a police car in California, including in Los Angeles County from 1976 to 1980 and in San Francisco in 1975.

    How is Don Ameche NOT the villain of this episode?!?!

      @dchegu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Technically, he is assisting the villain inadvertently. Even tho all his actions are sensible n rational

      He hadn't really made his comeback yet. I think Cocoon and Things Change brought him back into prominence.

      Don Ameche did excel at playing villains just as well as playing the leading man in films. However, at this phase of his career, he was mostly doing TV work almost serving as a character actor. The movie that propelled his career into another new phase in films was when he was cast as one of the bad guys, Mortimer Duke, in Trading Places, a comedy starring Dan Akroyd and Eddie Murphy. Then, a bit later, he played in Cacoon, taking his career to a whole new level.
