Nimoy could not walk around the block without Shatner saying, “I can do that, too!” Making an album, directing, on and on. I reckon when Shatner saw Nimoy play a totally cold-blooded and unsympathetic Columbo murderer, he began lobbying for his shot to do it, too. He SO wanted this to be a sympathetic, likable killer, he must have lobbied for it behind the scenes. It does seem to be an attempt to one-up Nimoy.
One of the best parts in this scene is just after this, when a frustrated Shatner says to Columbo - "Lieutenant, you would do me an enormous favor if you stop calling me sir."
Loved how Shatner was hamming it up throughout the episode SPECIFICALLY because he was playing the role of a ham actor who couldn’t stop hamming it up. He was parodying himself in the episode
There was another episode like that, the one in England, “Dagger of the Mind.” Loved how the couple in that did the same thing, started acting every time they were around Columbo. This one and that one are in my favorites.
Victor Buono was often told to tone the ham down in his performances, which is why he loved playing King Tut in the '60s Batman series, where he had free rein to ham it up to the extreme.
There’s even a bit in there about how the actor “Ward Fowler” wore elevator shoes. (Sadly, they DIDN’T do anything about Fowler having a collection of hairpieces.)
Colombo is smarter than he looks. Playing stupid to catch the killers unaware, getting them to incriminate themselves and a confession out of them, both orally and verbally. The killers thought that he was an idiot until they realised too late that Colombo was a lot smarter that he appears.
In the 90s I was over someone's house when her cousin (a stewardess) called and was bummed out because Shatner was going to be on the plane that night, the stewardesses would pick straws to see who had to wait on Shatner as he was a known obnoxious drunk in those days.
Yeah really. As wretched of an actor as Bill Shatner has always been, he did some of his best work in this episode. 👏👏 (although _genius_ is a little much)
@@SciTrekMan The guy was awful. And he was teased mercilessly about it by the critics and his peers. And often not in a good-natured way. Watch some of his films and pay attention to just him. Embarrassingly bad acting.
It's almost always the same acting style since he's a method actor. The amount of ham is what really varies from performance to performance, which makes me wonder if it only varies by how much the director is willing to let him get away with.
The video tape recorder was key in this episode, but something which most Americans could rarely afford in 1976 when this aired. In fact it wouldn't be until the early 1980s before VCRs would start to become the norm. Ward Fowler showing off his high salary, even though he slightly moans in one line about the amount of tax he has to pay. 1976 was an era when income tax was still very high for big earners, close to 70%.
This was informed by reality too. Falk was holding out and his producers were arguing over whether he was worth the money and if the show should continue. It’s kind of like Columbo vs. Peter Falk.
This explains why during this sixth season in which this episode is from, only three episodes were actually made for Season 6. Three episodes, Fade in to Murder, Old Fashioned Murder and The Bye-Bye Sky High IQ Murder Case.
Bill Shatner had another turn in COLUMBO as the murderer with the 1994 episode "Butterfly in Shades of Grey." He was an obnoxious radio show host who killed a man trying to lure his adult daughter/assistant away from him.
Clare woman got what she was asking for: blackmailers always corner people. Feel bad for Fowler. And Shatner's acting is great here. And they cut off the best final lines. Gawd ...
It is funny how during the episode, the production must have had a break, as in the first part Shatner's fictional character was addressed as Detective Lucerne and then it became Lieutenant Lucerne in the other half of the program. Continuity was never a strong point in Columbo. Episodes were filmed over long period, and most using single camera style.
When are you tube going to up load an full episodes of columbo I mean kojack on here starkey and hutch on here Charlie's Angel's there all the same age as columbo so c,Mon you tube let's see an complete episode
William Shatner was fun in this one. But considering it is one of the few Columbo episodes in which he actually finds hard evidence, a lot of the banter proved to be irrelevant to the case.
Peter Falk hated this episode because William acted circles around him in every scene. Falk ego couldn't handle the fact that the critics raved about this episode
Did his time, was rehabilitated, and was so impacted by Columbo that he became a police officer. Part of his rehabilitation was to give him a new identity by the name of Hooker.
"Let's stop pretending that I'm brilliant and you're simple"
That line must have bruised the narcissist Shatner's ego.
This episode was either written for William Shatner or was one of the greatest castings of all time.

That's my favorite episode from season 6 "Fade into Murder" William Shatner is absolutely amazing!
He's so Shatner in this episode. Jeff Goldblum must have been taking notes to be more Jeff Goldblum.
Being in a room with Columbo for more than 10 minutes is like being in the second half of an Hbomberguy video
I saw this as a kid when it first and columbo noticing the different heights of the bullet hole and her dress struck me as a great bit of deduction.

Not much of a fan of Mr Shatner, but I think his acting on this episode was quite genius.
