- Today we take a look around Livesey Bros, Lower Fields Mushroom Farm/Normanton Rd, Ashby-de-la-Zouch LE65 1XA.
We find a "Open To The Public" sign and follow it until we come to a visitors must sign in sign which is where we are met by a Boss.
After being asked to leave, we continue the video from the public highway when the owner comes out for round 2.

Most commercial mushrooms are grown on decomposing sawdust and other organic material. That's probably the raw material under the blue tarps. It needs to be sterilized to kill other fungi/bacteria you don't want. Usually it's then compressed into large blocks and is then inoculated with the variety being grown. The spent/used blocks are what you see being removed by that machine from one of the grow chambers. Staff inside loading it onto the conveyor. Conveyor probably also used to place the new blocks into a clean grow chamber to start a new crop. They probably sell the spent mushroom compost to landscapers/garden centers/vegetable farms to use as mulch. They get something back from their waste material.
Sterilization could be done chemically/gas, UV radiation or pasteurized with steam (rather than sterilized). Hygiene and clean equipment/work areas and control of visitors is very important.
They would go through a lot of water washing stuff down but with UV could re use a lot of it.
As to the attitudes, really sad.
Possibly horrible place to work given the management style.
Maybe there are illegal people working there to help with his profit margin.
Seemed paranoid and I doubt it was about any mushroom growing secrets or techniques.

That guy essentially shut down his own business by taking down that sign. If he worked for me he would be immediately sacked on the spot.
Over the last couple of years, we’ve had people flying drones over our farm. First time we had one, my grandad came into the house shouting “there’s someone flying a remote control plane, go & see what they’re up to & tell em’ not to fly near the cows”.
That was the first time I came across a drone, it was amazing! I asked the guy not to fly anywhere near the cows & for a copy of the footage. I gave him my number & he sent a copy on WhatsApp, which we had burned to a disc. My grandad must’ve now watched it fifty gazillion times & shows anyone that visits. When we get others coming over to fly their drones, we just ask that they don’t go anywhere near the cows & they always respect that.
Anyhow, another great video, could’ve only been better if the guys had taken the time to explain about mushrooms & the growing process - come September we get loads of various types on the land. We only eat the huge white ones & my nan always says; “don’t go eating the tiny ones or they’ll send you loopy”. She probably sneaks out & collects them for herself 😂
we allow filmin on ours of the cows, at height there is no harm, and it gives easier access to see if any are lame

Indeed, the man in the Merc was probably a high up from one of the supermarkets and was welcomed and spoken to with a tone of respect. DJ was spoken down to from the get go and both reps of the mushroom farm were extremely petty.

Livesey Brothers also supply to wholesalers who, in turn supply to takeaways, restaurants, etc, so you will also need to remember not order mushrooms with your meals when you eat out.

I was the the first worker at the age of 14 that worked for them they used to be based at smisby Ashby there Dad was Tom he grew standard white mushrooms. There were originally two brothers Tim of which you met and Simon we were experimenting with growing exotic mushrooms 🍄 of which the oyster mushroom was successful. The tractor 🚜 and trailer were emptying a shed of which grew oyster or shitaki mushrooms.
Simon is no longer part of the Buisness that was Tim and yes it was his son. Can’t believe you could not see the resemblance.

They were just so unwilling to listen. You tried numerous times to explain that you were on your way to reception to let them know you were there, but they keep saying you never let anyone know you were there. They were also unwilling to hear you when you tried to explain the rules governing drones under 250g.
The also need to realise that not all auditors are as pleasant as you DJ. He could have found himself on his ass, nursing a sore jaw, if he tried touching the wrong person!!!!
There was only one crime shown here as it is illegal to interfere with a pilot who's in control of an aircraft.

I’m a farmer and I’m proud of what l do and l really enjoy showing people around. I’m often surprised how little the public knows about how their food is produced. It’s never happened, but I might be a little concerned to see a drone flying over the farmyard, as it may be somebody checking out where the fuel tanks are, or where tools are stored, but l know l can’t do anything to prevent it.

Some do. It's the exception rather than the rule, but sometimes you'll see them try to come back out and be civil. It's probably disingenuous, but the fact that they make ANY effort to redeem themselves shows they've learned something, at least.
Quite a shame this time, the owner / boss didn't have the courtesy to even listen to the explanation about not being able to inform as office locked, nor the rules applicable to sub-250g drones, so asked his question, got an answer which he didn't like, and was then unwilling to sensibly discuss anything further...
Quite surprised he had not called the police, and of course claimed harassment (to the car driver) when he was actually the guilty party!

What always surprises me is how senior management can be so thick. They actually put themselves into a situation we’re they could be arrested. You are not allowed to put your hand on someone’s face. Hardly inspiring if you are a staff member working for this company when your boss is a complete moron. The thing I like about these videos is the forgotten folk who work hard in places like this get to have a good laugh looking at their bosses making a complete fool of themselves 😂

I think the whole arrogant bullying was was got me the most. Talking over DJ and not letting him reply despite asking all sorts of questions. All he wanted was DJ's details so he could try and take some action but DJ is far too smart for him. Again, another site that basically just asked every auditor in the UK to pop down and visit.
The guys were absolutely reasonable, asking genuine questions and wondering why a stranger was walking around their business.

Years ago in food service, a colleague told me mushrooms are 'dead' vegetables, meaning they contain little to no nutrition. But I do like the magic ones, with or without the nutritional merits.
Mushrooms contain high amounts of selenium, vitamin D, and vitamin B6. Selenium can help prevent cell damage in our bodies, vitamin D helps with cell growth, and vitamin B6 helps our bodies form red blood cells. All of these nutrients in mushrooms help to maintain a healthy immune system. A mushroom is not a vegetable, it is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus.
Not sure a waiter is the best person to offer nutritional guidance.
If only we had some way to disprove this in less than 5 seconds…

When i was young(30yrs ago🤣) the beat place to get them was a woodland behind the copshop. We used to walk past the police with carrier bags full. Times have changed

Honestly, I think they were trying to protect the fact that their "woodland mushrooms" are not in fact grown in pristine woodland forests, but instead inside of industrial warehouses. Which nobody cares about anyways, and many people would be fascinated by the process.
Lol... He's advertising 'free range mushrooms' when in fact, he's growing 'battery mushrooms' 🤣
Their biggest concern is that they are probably using horse manure as a growing medium for the mushrooms and they don't want it to be made public how they store it or what happens to it when they wash out the buildings and paths. Pollution problem perhaps?

Nah, they'll nitpick every tiny little thing and still think they were in the right. It's a shame, if they were nice and went with the flow, they would have gotten nice video of their property for free, and a bunch of good publicity that most likely wouldn't drive a lot of business but would show up in google searches about their business for bigger companies that may be interested in doing business with them. Seeing a bunch of nice people, even if they don't give you a tour, but answer any quick questions you may have about how mushrooms are grown and what type of operation they run "oversees shipping to X type of destinations" would seem welcoming and a positive look. They made a judgement about DJ that he won't/can't have any influence on their business' perception in the slightest, just not an important guy.
Instead, you did what they didn't want you to do anyways, and were so upset about it they made themselves look like fools in the process.

Hi DJ I am in admiration of your approach to these videos, clearly staying within the legislation for the Class 0 drones and exercising your rights to fly and film within those boundaries. Also educating those many people whose understanding of the legislation and of your rights to film along the way, so well done for that Sir. Having been a drone pilot for a while prior to the main stream media frenzy around drones that helped the government to justify bringing in the draconian legislation around class 1 drones which has it made all but impossible to fly them.
My concern is that as the audit videos across you tube grow in popularity will this not then possibly drive the legislators to once gain lower the weight limit to the point where manufacturers can no longer produce a drone light enough to be worthy of open air flight. and then next thing is a stroke of a pen and no more drones in the air.
It happened in America where Annapolis Audits (Terence Albert Falter) made such a nuisance of himself within government buildings and even local shops and supermarkets that the Mayor had to take action to protect staff and customers so now Town Halls and other public buildings like libraries etc have had to install electronic card doors and restrict many areas......even having to resort to the public now having to make appointments for service instead of just being able to walk in.............In America there are laws in the pipeline federaly and statewise to tackle the explosion of aggressive frauditing , they have had enough................exercising ones perceived rights to it's limits/interpretations can impinge on the very same rights of others.

Great audit. Wow! This should be a training video on how not to represent a company. Every part of their behaviour was foolish and aggressive. Actually taking the signs down was crazy. I don't understand people who ask questions, but talk over you when you try to answer. The management are nasty and ignorant. Great audit. It showed them for what they are.

It's a year old but you are highlighting some people who were probably the ones who didn't always do the homework when at school. Whereas I studied for at least a month before indulging in the relatively inexpensive hobby of drone photography. I can also check our gutters and the roof without risking my life up a ladder. I am still researching whilst waiting for my Qinux F8 .

mushroom farms are very cool. the actual cultivation process is not like you would think. the industry is very green too. they missed out on a good public relations opportunity. needs a revisit. good job!

What a arrogant uneducated man. Really bad image for the company. I get a feeling that they may be growing something magical on this site. Those blocks are probably the spent medium the mushroms are grown in. They can grow well in loads of stuff but lots of them use compressed sawdust. The old medium can be reground and sterilised to be used again. My (ex)mother in law used to work in a mushroom farm. Nice 1 DJ thanks.
