I sometimes use AUM together with Apematrix. I think Jonatan Liljedahl created a masterpiece with AUM. I really think it's the best app of all time. It has everything with an interface that deserves huge accolades. He added little things like double tapping to add nodes and other little things that together make the app as good as it could be. The way you can append saved channels from projects Is bloody genius. He has given us a wonderful gift. Every time I use AUM, I have a smile because it's such a pleasure. When it came out I sent him suggestions and I think he added every one of them in some way, usually better than my suggestion. The guy has the best thing that a designer/programmer can have, and that's low ego. He isn't proud. He just wants to create great stuff. Thanks a lot Jakob. You are one of the best. Keep having fun and fight through the hard times. We need you and you smarts and insight and talent and musical ability.
Its vital for people to understand the cool features of AUM. I say vital because of how much more fun it is to grasp its power and flexibility. And you explain it so well. Its sad that the MultitrackStudio app by Giel Bremmers is left out of the DAW list because it is a great one that does everything well and supports what it should support like AU. One thing is that there are a bunch of mediocre apps with the same name. The bremmers one is the only one that is all one word multitrackstudio. I mention it because it’s so good and deserves mention. I love competition.
This came at the right time! I also use a iPad Pro and have the AUM app as well as Cubasis to record on. I have found that your thoughtful tutorials on how to use these apps a great learning source and has cut the intimidation and frustration factor way down. Huge help Jakob thank you so much! Nice one! I've overlooked AUM since release but with its bussing capabilities and AU system it really seems great. Live demo you did sounded amazing. Still can't work in cubasis because I can only get about 4 tracks before I get clicking. Impossible to work with for me.
AUM is pretty handy and simple to use, especially with AUv3’s. Building complex sequences is easy and doesn’t take that much time to do. However I wish there where more AU Groovebox-type apps out there.
Nice video Jacob, I’m trying to setup AUM to work in the background of onsong, I’m trying to work out the best way of using as many plugins as I can and thought I could have maybe 6 identical synths setup in every song/session and each time just send a program change from onsong to load my sessions. The issues I have is I get an error saying session in progress did not load new session, the second issue being AUM reloads each plugin every session even if it was the exact same plugin and channel as the last session meaning long load times. I’m trying to cut down load times between songs. Any suggestions?
I noticed something recently with AUM: how, when playing live, do you add an FX to something, without the fx triggering immediately. Let’s say I have a sequenced pattern playing while playing live, or even everything playing through a bus, and want to add a chorus, reverb or delay or whatever. When I add an effect, it usually kicks in very hard and sounds abrupt. How to bring it in gradually? There seems no way to do this. Also, when opening things in AUM, there is often momentarily a glitchy noise. So I find it hard to see how this could reliably be used in a live setting without having various pops and clicks when you open new inputs etc, which kind of spoils the effect. IS there a way round this? Cheers!
I would very much advise against loading plugins when performing live due to audio glitching momentarily etc (as you’ve noticed). However you could use a bus to send the same channel to two new channels. One with the level fader pulled down and that’s the one you’d use for fx. The other one clean without fx. You’d have to make sure to put the blend/mix knob to 100% on the fx you load on the fx bus channel. Then you could bring the volume up on that one to add fx. Literally using it as an fx send subgroup. You’d then have to bring the volume down when you want to add or remove an fx and it should be audible. It is a workaround and you can end up messing up a session I you happen to load a resource heavy plugin.

No, you’ll get the same issues on desktop depending on what plugins you use and how much resources your session takes up. Some systems/plugins/daws can be more stable sure. However switching out plugins during a live set is bad practise in general, even with hardware. Best way is to plan out your sets before hand. You want to be sure that your set is stable. But there are workarounds for the daring like using muted subgroups. We do this with hardware too. 👍🏼
Playing around and testing out stuff is the best way of getting new ideas and finding inspiration. But when the ball drops and you’re out on a gig trying to do a job ... this is where you need to be able to trust your rig and your setup. . Same goes for studio work or when doing a live jam. You might be finding yourself in the moment recording a performance and it’s the best “thing” ever, only to have it ruined halfway through due to an audio glitch.

AU3 - the “v” is out of place, the wrong case (rendered this way only because it is out of place), and redundant. Yes, other people write it and now even say it, bizarrely enough, because they see someone else write it or say it the wrong way. The normal way to abbreviate software with version numbers is just to append the version number to the abbreviation. The reason is brevity, and the given that the number refers to the version. If the name of the software were itself a number, we would have reason to distinguish the version number. With “AU”, we have no such motivation. Certain hack-familiar developers also manipulate the names of their products for uglier, antisecurity reasons (as far as users are concerned). The rest of us should ignore such impulses/indulgences and proceed with normal usage. Which would again give us AU3, not AUv3. Anyway, thank you for another fine HAQ video - with a tasty bit after the false ending.
