A testimony note to self in the future:
On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, was the day I finally grasped the concept of parallel compression courtesy of this video. Despite scouring numerous paid and free tutorials for several months without success, this single video changed everything. The impact this tutorial will have on my music going forward is profound. I'm at a loss for words to express my gratitude to its creator.

Nothing should be paywalled. The things we know now are the product of countless lifetimes passed in research and development, it belongs to all of humanity, some of which are dirt poor but need access to it just as much as you or me. For many lifetimes people reinvented the wheel because do nothing hoards kept all the worlds info under lock and key. To this day places like the Vatican have massive hoards of books, but just as they stole the data they also destroyed that which they disagreed. We have made it this far and yet here we are again. Can’t we solve this once n for all?

This covers compression on more detail than my music degree ever did! We literally believed that compression is there to make the amplitude more balanced. And occasionally to glue, although saturation tends to be used more for that according to our lecturers. This video is making me feel like I was conned by my uni. I feel betrayed. And I am only 9 minutes in so far!!

@@Macacos when it hits TH-cam there’s a bit of natural compression from the video conversion so it makes differences in audio a little tougher to grasp. Are you using headphones, speakers? The best way to learn a lot of effects is to over exaggerate it so you can hear what it does and then pull it back so that people don’t really notice it, but can feel the difference

Despite the runtime, this was actually very direct and concise. You could probably teach this content for six weeks, but the runtime is good for students who want to focus and learn either quickly or who need to rewatch sections to get it into the brain (and the ears). I honestly didn’t need to watch this at all after 30yrs on the desk, but like a lot of yt instructive material, I had it running in the background over a couple days while I was doing transfers just to understand what and how much of this information and concepts are being presented to new students of the craft. This 10hr and NOTABLY FUCKING FREE (!!!) content is a super accelerator for those unable to do intensive campus courses or work in studios with a good teacher. Kudos to these guys to putting this out, it’s very good.

I almost wept when you started talking about “compressing with intention,” because oh my goodness, I have spent SO much time just…randomly fiddling with stuff, not because I knew what I wanted or how to achieve it, but just because I knew I needed to do *something.* If it didn’t make things sound actively worse, then why not, right? I’m only a few hours in, but this video is going to make such an extraordinary difference. Thank you very much for your time and generosity, and please keep releasing these videos!

    13:40 what is dynamic range
... Sorry guys, but the original uploader has uploaded official timestamps and therefore this mission is abandoned.

1:10:50 minor correction: attack and release are usually non linear. so with 10ms attack and ratio 4:1 it's not like when at 5ms the ratio is 2:1. it surely can be. but usually it's either smaller or greater than 2:1.

Damn dude, I wish someone explained this to me. Out of all the youtube videos I watched, your explanation validated my perspective of it.

A thing to understand about 'auto gain', which makes it very useful, is that when you turn it on you manually have to tune your final output gain only once. From that point onward, you can make any change to any of the other settings and auto gain will accurately follow any resulting changes to the output volume. So auto gain does not mean you don't have to set the gain at all, it means you only have to set it once, rather than set it after every single little tweak.

can't thank you guys enough for these courses, I honestly love how much you guys get so basic with everything, even if it's a "common" term or something, it makes this so palatable for a beginner. I love also how many metaphors and analogies you use to help explain, how many examples, and how simple you make everything so that not even one part of this moves too fast, or gets skipped over. It's amazing. I believe the best teachers are the ones who can simplify things to this extent, and who answer every single little question anyone might have even before they can think to ask it. I just can't thank you guys enough!

  • @nosslinkire

This is amazing. Already pretty familiar with many of the concepts, but having everything contextualized together is so valuable. One thing in particular that fell into place for me was the value on layering diffrent styles with seemingly contrary approaches: ie first leveling the vocal with fast attack, then adding punch with slower attack. Realize Ive been stuck with more of a "one goal per element "-mindset, if that makes sense. Thank you for making this available for free! All the best, Erik
