    😅 After reading a few comments, I realise that I should have talked a bit about why I sent the side-chain signal after (post) the drum compressor instead of before (pre) the drum compressor. You get a different side-chain signal depending on if you’re sending the signal pre or post the compressor. The thing is that I like sculpting the actual side-chain signal a bit with compression before I send it anywhere else. Also, sometimes I’ll over-compress the drums to get a specific type of over-compressed sound. When I do, I’d like the side chain to pick that up too, in order to get get a ducking that is consistent with the overall drum sound. So then It’s beneficial to set the side-chain signal send post the drum compressor.

    I've just started getting into music production and kept thinking, "I know Side-Chaining is important... But what is it?!"
    And magic! You made a video about it AND used AUM + Figure (which I actually paid for BEFORE it was free!)
    Then got side-tracked with learning about Theory, Family, jobs, etc.
    I've always found your videos extremely useful and entertaining. Really did enjoy your awkward moments whenever you actually showed yourself on camera! Genuine laugh out loud moments for me!
    I'm personally interested in more of these production type videos and hoping others speak up and say, "YES! MORE VIDEOS LIKE THESE PLEASE!"
    10 minutes is a good amount of time investing into learning about a small important part of production! Keep it up, man! 🙌🙌🙌
    Extremely helpful to beginners like myself. 👍👍

    Thank you, Jakob, for this follow up on your 2016 video on side-chaining. I kept hearing the term "side-chaining" and knew I could count on you to provide the very patient and detailed and down-to-earth explanation you did. I promise to start chipping in after I get back on my feet!

    Amazing update! It’s incredible how good AUM is. I am only quite sad that we still don’t have landscape mode on iPhone... it would make things far easier - having one single channel on the screen is quite limiting.
    Would have also been nice to be able to open AUv3 windows through the midi matrix - far easier and faster than scrolling when you have a large setup.
    Please upvote if you’re an iPhone user, we need this 😪

    • @EnriquePage91
      @EnriquePage91 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also: props for
      1) remembering window position and size - huge difference for iPhone workflow !
      2) midi gear connections being restored automatically! 🤯

    • @OrafuDa
      @OrafuDa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      +1 for opening AUv3s from the MIDI matrix ... but I’m on iPad 🤷‍♂️.
      Btw, that’s what apematrix is good for! :P

    • @EnriquePage91
      @EnriquePage91 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Orafu Da yep, i agree it’s one of Ape’s best features - as a matter of fact I only switched to AUM after I updated my phone from 12.0.1 to 13.3 which completely destroyed my performance when running ApeMatrix... now it crashes with little more than 3-4 instances (I used to run over 14 wth Apple lol).
      Now I mostly use AUM but miss the good old features of ApeMatrix 😪

    Great job! Great news! Observation: instead of pulling up on the insert stem and tapping the the plus icon, you can just double tap the stem to add another insert. Some may find this a bit quicker and/or easier.

      Yeah the multi-out is a welcome upgrade and I want to see it’s implementation standardised for AU hosts. I’m sure we’ll se loads of interesting new plugins that uses this in weird creative new ways. I’m also happy since I can now get closer to the kind of production workflow I used to have back when I was using desktop DAWs.

    I would like to hear these setups while they are playing and inserting the fx plugins. if you could set it up and just slide them to the eject side it will disable it without removing it and you could slide them back into place while playing. It would be helpful to hear the differences side by side by toggling them in and out.

    I have to know how you made that bass line! That bass is just buttery smooth, warm, deep, fat and melodic. Oh man, how did you do it?
    7:58 I should finish watching your video before commenting. 😅 🤣
    “Oh, and if you were wondering how I made the music ...”
    Yes, I was! 😅
    Darn, now I finally have to *register* an e-mail address with Figure. 😤 ... Go figure ... 🤨
    That always held me back from using that program...
    Ah, but the registration for the Propellerhead Reason app works in Figure too. 🤷‍♂️ I had it all along, oh well.
    Also, why do you send the side chain audio out *after* it went through compression on track 1?
    I would send it out *before* the compression on track 1 is made.
    But I guess to get a smoother ducking effect, you want to compress the other tracks with the compressed drum track? Nice. :)

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should have talked a bit about the pre/post-compression side-chain thing, but yeah you guessed it right. I also do it for convenience. Sometimes I’ll over compress the drums to get a specific type of over-compressed sound. When I do, I’d like the side chain to pick that up too, in order to get get a ducking that is consistent with the overall drum sound.

    Another good vid mate, I appreciate all of the vids you put out, you work hard to make them informative & polished with a little bit of sillyness. I will be going back to view them all again.
    You should have at least 50-60k subscribers by now. People need to click like on these vids to keep this quality content coming.
    Maybe 10-15 minutes is about right to explain a new feature and another vid of 20 mins exploring possibilities, I don't know, I subscribe and like so I'm happy. I like short 10-15 min nuggets of new information to remember, longer than that is too much for my little brain then longer more involved vids that I plan on following along with one day 😀

    • @hadje22
      @hadje22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is when you have, say, a bass line but you want it to be loud without interfering with the kick when they are both playing at the same time...so you "tell" the compressor on the bass channel to compress the bass whenever the kick is playing...this is a sidechain...so he sets up the compressor and then you see how he just keeps raising the threshold to get how much sidechain compression he gets on the lead (in this case)
