Gisela Hagberg - How quantitative is Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping?
Biography: Gisela E Hagberg was trained in Engineering Physics (MSc) at the EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland and at Lund University, Sweden; in Biophysics (PhD) at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel, Switzerland; and in Medical Physics at the Sapienza University, Rome, Italy. Currently, she is a Privat Dozent in Biomedical Magnetic Resonance at the Medical Faculty of the Eberhard Karl’s University of Tübingen in Germany and is also affiliated with the High Field Magnetic Resonance Department of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen. Her research interests lie in the field of neuroimaging applications, from MR-physics and image reconstruction to data analysis and limits of MRI interpretation. She currently pursues research on quantitative MRI at high magnetic field strengths to study brain microstructure in health and disease.
Abstract: Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) targets a fundamental MR-parameter which is field independent. It can give information about local tissue microstructure, for instance in terms of myelin, iron content, calcifications and venous oxygenation saturation. The role of increased iron levels for neurodegeneration is an area of active research, but QSM has not yet emerged as a method of choice in clinical practice. In this lecture, the methodological challenges of QSM are surveyed, including those related to tissue (non)uniformity, image acquisition and postprocessing, with emphasis on studies at high-magnetic field strengths. Shared tools for standardization across sites will be presented, which may prove helpful to overcome some limitations and facilitate a more widespread use of this quantitative technique in the clinic.
