    I bought this car a month ago and I really like it. I did 0-60 in 6.2 seconds. I know it's no HEMI or Hellcat but it is the car I can afford in Michigan. It snowed here this week and it was fun hitting the gas in the turns with control. I averaged 27 mpg when out of "sport" mode (20% city, 80% Hwy). It sound ok when you hit the gas. Bottom line for me is it's MY Challenger.

      I live in NY and the winter was brutal this year, a snowstorm every week. I'm seriously considering this car, combination of the aesthetic I like with the functionality I actually need.

    When they announced this, I was definitely in the camp of "A V6 AWD is not a muscle car." Eventually, I realized this is the perfect car for me. I don't live my life a quarter mile at a time, and I live in the midwest, where we'll have summer and winter - sometimes in the same week. Do I miss the V8 rumble? Definitely. But this gets better mileage, and the AWD in winter is amazing. The trunk is ginormous. It's a fantastic highway cruiser. It's a gorgeous, timeless design. Manual transmissions are vastly overrated, especially in a daily driver, and after 15 years of DD'ing a manual I don't miss it. I've hit 6 seconds flat (according to the dash timer), which is plenty fast. Don't sleep on the GT simply because of the specs. It is damn near a perfect cruiser.

    This is a great blend of a sporty looking and performing vehicle that seats more than 2 occupants comfortably, gets decent mpg's, has a trunk area that accommodates more than a suitcase or set of golf clubs , AND can be used safely and efficiently in all types of weather and road surfaces.

    GT = Granturismo, which means a road car meant to be driven in all types of weather.. I think this qualifies. You want this in Muscle Car from, buy an R/T, Scat Pak or a Hell Cat. And it's a 2 or 3 season car at best...

  • @jimdorsey9618

    I always loved the classic, retro look of the challenger-and I wanted one for day to day use as my only car. I’m not into racing or doing burnouts either. I live in the northeast where we get snow and ice so the AWD challenger was a no brainer for me. It’s not going to win any races, but this beast got up my steep neighborhood hill in blizzard without any problems. Also a fantastic highway cruiser in the spring and summer months. A true muscle car? No. An awesome year round sports car? Absolutely!

  • @jongwoolee130
    @jongwoolee130 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    well, its my type of car. I love the way the challenger look and that's it. There is absolutely no need of HEMI for me since i'm not a drag racer. AWD is kinda necessary in WA. So why the hell not?

    First, this is a Grand Touring option for the pony car class. Second, the muscle car references and hate because of the lack of a mighty V8 are practically hilarious. How many muscle cars through the years produced less than 300HP? Answer....LOTS..... The Camaro has had SS and Z models producing sub 300 HP numbers from the 1st generation on. Hell the early 80s Z28 came standard with a whopping 145HP and yes that was a 5.0l V8....lol. The list goes on and on. Sure, today's V8s are powerful, but so is the 3.6l that's in this. It performs as it should, comfortably without the risk of wrapping it around a tree or pole everytime you punch it.

    This entire comment section is "pretty sure my car can beat this" nonsense. Personally I don't give two shits about those comments. If I wanted to hear about that car, I would've looked it up. I'm here to hear about the Challenger. I have questions, Nathan. While driving this car, did you like it? Would you recommend it for someone looking to get something sporty that still handles bad weather well? How's the visibility? Are the blind spots a killer? Can you change lanes in it on a crowded highway with ease, or is it hard to spot traffic coming up from the back right side? These are things that I want to know as someone looking into this car. It really is a beautiful car, and I'd hate to smack it up because I couldn't see the guy in the next lane

      Sorry...I'm late to this party, I know. But I just gotta point out something here: Notice the reviewer is doing his review in Colorado. Altitude---and the accompanying decrease in oxygen content---plays a real factor here. Boulder is about parallel with Denver in terms of altitude, maybe a little higher because it's right up against the Front Range. This means that an engine making 305 hp at sea level---is not making that much up here. (For reference, Denver sits at 5280 feet. Boulder's probably up around 6000' or more.)

      I have 2018 Challenger GT.
      The passenger and driver side windows are nice and large, increasing visibility in that aspect.
      The front windshield is pretty tight in height, but, I imagine its a sports car thing. I find myself rarely using the sun visor and I drive toward sunset almost every day.
      The rear pillars that hold the roof, block a good amount of visibility, but I have gotten used to it.
      Since the rear end with spoiler is fairly high up, I don't get blinded by the headlights of cars behind me.
      I have the "Driver convenience group" package, which adds a bind spot detection system. If you are driving, the system has arrows on the mirrors that will light up when someone is in your blind spot.
      When in reverse, the vehicle will yell at you if there is movement behind you, or you are getting too close to something. I was puling out of my driveway and the car was able to detect an oncoming car, across the street, several houses down.
      Of course, I don't just rely on the blind spot system, but, its definitely a nice feature to have.

    • @AnirudhSharma9211
      @AnirudhSharma9211 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never had a chance to drive the AWD, but I drove a RWD Challenger SXT in the snow once. It is practically the same car, with the same engine. I was surprised at how well the RWD handled in the snow, so I can confidently say that AWD would be extremely safe to drive in the snow.
      About the visibility... The front windshield and the windows combine to make a somewhat cockpit style setup, so the visibility is wonderful. The rear windshield is a little cramped, but the rearview mirror in the center is extremely large so it doesn't really affect visibility. The blind spots aren't really bad if your mirrors are adjusted, and I'm sure they all come with blind spot monitors. What I really loved was that the central rearview mirror is so broad that you can usually see a broader frame in the lane behind you, so it is easier to spot vehicles that might be moving into your blind spots. Highway driving is a breeze. It handles much better than you would expect from a car this heavy. I'd suggest getting a test drive. Enterprise usually has them in their lot.

    I bought a 2018 GT. Blacktop. I average 28.5 MPG on a daily commute of 140 miles. The only time it "scared me" was when I saw red / blue, stomped the brakes, and THEN realized I was on ice.....is what it is. I love it for the "plant" on the road, the ride comfort, the awesome 506 watt Alpine, the Alacantra Leather (upcharge since 2019) heated / ventilated seats, and the additional 'free options" like performance gauges / sport pack etc. This car has been great. Especially the previous "red / blue" incident....it was taking care of ME without me even realizing it. And no - I'm not a millennial- I drove in Michigan winters with 2wd (RWD) for MANY (20) years - it just took away some of the Michigan winter conditions without any undue strain on my driving ability. I'm 56 and don't want to be sideways......all in all- this car is great!

    Love the Hellcat, of course, and any other V8-equipped Challenger, but honestly 300 hp in the V6 would be just fine with me. AWD here in our Chicago winters would be fantastic. The only thing I'd cringe a bit about the Challenger GT with V6 and hood scoops and vivid paint is that so many other people would expect so much more from a Challenger, just based on its reputation, that it would suck to say "Um, mine only has the V6." lol

      Thedustyaman is right. And no you don't need to upgrade internals. I own a RIPP in my grand cherokee with a pentastar.. even with the drivetrain loss I'm still around 400 whp. The charger obviously isn't 4wd so yes it will put down around 430 to the wheels pretty reliably. The pentastars a pretty strong engine and has proven to take boost better than the v8s on stock internals. Wouldn't push anymore than 10 psi though.

    One thing many fail to realize is that back when the original challenger,mustang,camaro,etc came out they not only had v8's but also inline 6's which made far less power and got less mileage than the new v6's do so there's truly nothing wrong with a v6 in any of these cars.

    I don't consider the V6 to be a muscle car engine. It's basically a trim level for people who like the look of the muscle car, but don't care about performance. That's just my thoughts on that.

    I pulled mine into my friends driveway, which is a wet muddy mess, to play with the AWD.
    With only RWD engaged I tried to gently drive. The rear just ended up sliding like 2 feet sideways. 2 seconds later the AWD kicks in and I'm off, like there was never an issue.
    Most people who drive challengers don't go playing in the mud, but, sometimes you just have to :)

    • @timtresch4848
      @timtresch4848 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats cool and all but really then they should just ship the car with a free set of winter tires, since RWD with winter tires is a lot better then AWD with all-seasons which really just suck in all situations versus dedicated winter/summer tires but people would rather spends 1000's of dollars on AWD instead of taking an hour twice a year to swap tires. Use all-seasons in summer all you want but AWD does not stop your car from sliding on ice/snow, it helps you accelerate but as far actually safety its pretty useless. Far cheaper for Dodge to give every Challenger owner a set of winters then they spent developing getting this AWD system into the Challenger.

    I'm still confused as to which market this is for. Not only is it a v6-which is fine since 6's are good nowadays-but awd. Is it necessary? With the v6 and original weight does it actually make a difference? And if people wanted to drive it in the winter, wouldn't it be more cost effective to just buy the appropriate tires?

      BFMV409 people will never understand that and Dodge is capitalizing on that. tbh if they made a v8 version I would have considered it, but currently I drive the scat pack with winter tires in the Canadian winter and never had a problem yet

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You say that, but I doubt you would. AWD Scat Pack sounds great, until you realize how heavy and fuel inefficient that would be. The Scat Pack barely gets by without a gas guzzler tax, and add the weight and extra friction of AWD (assuming it could even fit in the front, as the engine is so big), and you'd have a massive boat anchor of a car. The V6, being smaller and lighter, likely makes it the weight of the V8 with still a little bit higher fuel efficiency than the V8, which is good above the snow belt.

    • @jattz4lyfe

      DumbDuck44 v8 awd rnt a new concept in the automotive world, just look at some of the German coupes, but I know what u mean... this generation definitely can't support a v8 awd.. hopefully the weight-loss tricks they learn from the demon can be implemented on the next generation challenger.

    • @letterpool

      Think they said when asked this that they sell more Challenger v6 models than any other challenger so they thought it would appeal to the biggest market they could. Lets just hope they sell a lot because this front drive train came out of the v8 cop car so it can certainly handle a v8 as it already does... then we are talking real potential

      The WRX has its own problems though, and need to address the very poor NVH, inside materials quality, and improve the fuel economy of the STI version as they run so rich its a gas guzzler. The Dodge is heavy, but on the plus side I have to say they have a really great Uconnect infotainment system (probably the best in the industry right now), decent quality soft touch materials everywhere it counts, and plenty of sound insulation so you get engine noise but not a lot of squeaks and rattles and wind noise like you do in WRXs right now.

    Hey I'm in Boulder too and own one of these cars! An aftermarket exhaust makes a huge difference and it's an amazing year round daily for the colder states. That being said, it's only a true grand touring car, not a muscle car. Throw a blower on the pentastar and it gets pretty fun though.

    Well back in the 70s didn't the base Challenger come with the slant 6 and if so I know it didn't have the power that is car gets? Plus did the 318V8 Challenger have 305 HP from the factory? I'll have to look it up, but 305 HP is still pretty good. The Mustang still offers a 4 banger, I know it's bosted but still a 4 banger. Anyways if I was going to buy a challenger, I would buy this car because for every day driver all I would need is a V6 because I wouldn't be racing anyone or taking it to the track, so if it had anymore power it would just be a waste.

    • @bryanhersman4037
      @bryanhersman4037 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      305hp in the modern world is much more than the gross ratings in 1970. The 426 Hemi when tested net HP was about 360, the LS6 454 of 1970 put down 288 to the wheels which meant about 350 net in today's ratings (GM called it 450hp). That would be even less with all the accessories of modern motors like 140+amp alternators and air conditioning. This 305hp Challenger probably makes more power than anything short of a 440 or 426 of 1970. Not great but not bad. www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/articles/2013/08/13/Horsepower

      If you pay MSRP. Dodge customers are used to the overpriced sticker so you think you are getting a deal, deal. Buy a Toyota, and you're almost always paying over invoice at minimum. I bought a Scat Pack though with an MSRP of $46K for $39K out the door after taxes (6.25%) and rebates and everything. I've seen discounts on Dodge Ram's of $10K+. So remember to compare true street prices, as that can make a huge difference, at least it did for me.

    As a fan of the Challenger in Utah, where we often have nasty winters, I really wish they had an R/T Scat Pack with AWD. The V8 Hemi is just so much more appealing. Otherwise I would have to get expensive snow tires and even then it wouldn't be as good as the AWD.

Use all-seasons in summer all you want but AWD does not stop your car from sliding on ice/snow, it helps you accelerate but as far actually safety its pretty useless. 8.5 to 60 isn't too bad for such a large AWD car. I'd stop short of calling it a muscle car, I'd like to see 6 sec flat at 5k feet to consider that a valid moniker. I think the Chrysler 200 AWD would be a better bet. I had one in Prince Edward Island recently and I was quite impressed by the power. I think its a great looking car but the interior was a bit low rent in the 200. The performance comparison is more apples to oranges as PEI is pretty much at sea level and a 200 weighs a bit less... Still I think it's nice that Dodge released this car, hopefully this will push GM to release an AWD Camaro. Not holding my breath though...

    I've known for a while now that the "Challenger GT" was available with AWD. Until I watched this video, however, I was assuming that "GT" meant V8.
    For anyone who lives in snow country, AWD makes a LOT more sense than rear-wheel-drive and, in my not-so-humble opinion, anything that can do 0-60 in 9 seconds is plenty fast enough for anyone in his right mind.
    For me personally, I'd rather spend my millions (that I don't have) on vehicles with more ground clearance but for people who never drive off of paved roads, the price of this puppy might be worth it based on looks alone. Comfort and a useful trunk is icing on the cake.

      there is an r/t awd charger last year for that was 2014 I believe they had it since like 07 or something on the charger.

  • @roccoseals7753
    @roccoseals7753 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    they only made this because they had the platform for an awd V6 from the charger so it was very cheap to make this and make a few extra models

      No that isn’t why. They were already gonna make this in the beginning. Why lie.

    Funny how touchy people are about the challenger!! The challenger is not supposed to be a practical car it's for fun so who cares what the fuel mileage is!!! It's supposed to be bad ass,fun,fast!! I'm just talking about the challenger in general not just this V6 AWD.

    really need a RT 5.7 or higher for the challenger to be quick. the car is too heavy for the v6 to be fast. the camaro v6 on the other hand at around 3400 lbs and 30 more horsepower than this v6, is very fast for a v6. 0 to 60 in under 5.3 seconds.

      james loehr I had a v6 Camaro with six speed manual and let me tell you the Challenger sxt plus v6 with 8 speed automatic tourqe flight trans is world's better. I mean night and day. In my opinion.

    I like all these people talking shit, yet they cant even afford the V6. Enjoy the car and appreciate it. Instead everyone wants to compare it to the V8. Modern day V6's have more horsepower than the older V8's. Cant afford it? Dont talk shit.

    launch control on a somewhat underpowered AWD naturally aspirated V6 car?? what difference would launch control make on that car? Anyway, I'm sure it's a fine car for someone who likes the way it looks and wants an awd commuter car. But don't call it a muscle car. An average FOUR door awd V6 car is as fast or faster.

  • @Cobb

    I would say the charger is more of a direct competitor to the mustang and camaro, this is just a brick with wheels. A very slow brick... Fast has to be in the 5 second range, mustang does it, camaro does it, hell a basic 3 series does it. At 8.25 its about as fast as an accord.

    • @jimmypena2442
      @jimmypena2442 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cobb an accord coupe can do under 7...

    • @Cobb
      @Cobb 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but can it still do that a mile above sea level? I imagine at altitude the coupe runs around a 7.5-7.8, which is still faster but close enough for the comparison.

      @@brianbuchert6382 ive driven RWD cars in snow for years and years just get winter tires Ive drive AWD with all-seasons in snow and RWD with winter tires in snow, the RWD with the proper tire feels a lot more secure, your not slidding around as much when your breaking because your car doesn't skid because its cant grip on the ice/snow, you have more control turning with the proper tire set up its not even close just get winter tires, for anyone out there stop spending money on drive train options you don't need, get a proper tire set up thats actually safer and properly grips your car in winter weather. Plus the material the tires are made with are more appropriate and grip better in cold weather, stop being lazy AWD won't do s*** when you hit your brakes in snow/ice and the shitty all-season can't grip the ground and your car is sliding right into the car or pole or whatever is in front of you.
