Bionic Commando was one of those games that a friend of mine had growing up and I feel there were 3 types of NES kids: The kid who just was a natural at everything, the kid who had to memorize a game to beat it, and the kid who just gave up after level 2 on most games. This is a hint about the (technically 4th) communicator, the orange one, which you need for the final 3 levels. I believe the original intent was that you couldn't just blast through the wall in Area 15 and would need to approach that neutral zone from the back by going through the tunnel, but I'm not sure if this is correct. I do know it's possible to swing under the wall instead of shooting through it, and there's a person outside the second room who tells you where Super Joe is located.

It was a sloppy localization. All sorts of small things were broken, like the weird guys parachuting indoors were added, things referenced in dialogs are missing in the us version, the dialogs are not glitched out like the us, a couple items are gone from the us making a couple parts of levels empty/pointless, you need to use the other weapons in a couple more instances to progress in famicom, theres a shooting star in one level in famicom, the plot makes sense on famicom, some things in neutral zones are logical on famicom that arent in us… theres more… thats off the top of my head.
The famicom original is more up to usual capcom polished standards. not sure why they half-arsed the localization.
