Ok Nate, I'm enjoying you NES walkthroughs. But now I got a pop quiz for you lol it's 2 questions and one of them tell how old I've been a gamer. 1st question what other series was mother brain the villain in. (Hint king hippo from punch out was a henchman) Question 2, what was the typo in the original Metroid.
@ oh wow…I thought I knew about king hippo when I saw him in punch out but can’t remember off the top of my head. Is the typo in Metroid on the opening screen? I’m honestly blank on both. Great trivia
@@retronate mother brain was the villain in Captain N the cartoon series which came on together with the legend of Zelda. And the typo was in the original NES instructions booklet where it refers to Samus as a guy........ But in the end the big reveal was ta-da Samus was a girl.....
My first ever NES game! I'll finish the story. It was late '86 or early '87, I was frantically looking for a Nintendo, not even K-Mart had any. But I eventually found one (at a Pamida), took it home, I mentioned it contained the Official Nintendo Player's Guide and not Mario, so my parents took me back up to where we bought the NES. We told them that Mario wasn't in there, so they let me choose a free game! I chose............Metroid. I still have it, the box, instructions, everything. I even have the same Nintendo I bought there, still works. Almost 40 years ago!
@@retronate Me too. Oh there was no trade, I still have the Player's Guide too. Well I guess for SMB not being in there, getting that, AND the free game, I'd say yes. Oh, and there WAS a fully detailed map of the entire Metroid game in the Player's Guide, so I had no trouble finding out where stuff was.
Awesome stuff, going to watch this and play along, I've only beat this game over 35+ years ago when I used the Justin Bailey code. Never played it all the way through, this will be fun.

I will never associate Metroid with Castlevania. Ever. Other than that, L is Long Beam. Anyway, close flight with Mother Brain. You could just bait the rings and freeze them (they don't spawn more when frozen) then fire off the *missiles* from the platform. But you cleared it. Good job, sir.
I hear you on that. They’re truly not the same. Long beam - noted. I haven’t mastered that ice beam rhythm on the rings yet. Will have to work on my technique. But a photo finish!

There was something special about this game. I never beat it when I was younger, I always got lost. Better late then never I think I am going to play the Metroid games once I am finished with the Castlevania series. Your walkthrough's help when I need it.
When you're trying to kill Mother Brain, the best technique I've found is to freeze those red rings. It makes firing off the rockets on her sooo much easier. Awesome run though and I love your channel. I watch it while I'm working.
@@retronate If there's one thing I've learned, it's that the best way to learn any new skill on the internet is to post yourself doing it suboptimally. There's a 50-50 shot that the info you get comes from someone incredibly smug, but you will almost DEFINITELY learn the correct thing.

@@lishd glad to share! We’ve adopted 4 boys, 1 from Bulgaria, 1 from China, and 2 from Ukraine. Three of our guys have significant developmental disabilities, ranging from severe autism, hydracephalus, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy among some others. Our boy from China has some physical challenges, but not nearly as severe as the others and is on a more typical developmental track. But those experiences were, and continue to be, the most eye opening of my life. I’ve actually thought about doing an “about me” type of vid and maybe this comment bumps that up a touch in priority.

Wow. It looks like everyone who liked made a comment so I need to make one too? I remember making my own graph paper map of as much of this game as I could find: pushing as far as I could before Samus exploded just to try and figure out where all the power ups were. I beat the game and played through with the discolored suit and then I got the best ending. I never realized there was as many different endings until very recently, and I somehow avoided the worst ending, despite all my mapping. I really enjoy your videos!
I’m glad you did! I love hearing how we all engaged with these games as kids right through adulthood. And honestly, the idea of a graph paper map of this game sounds incredible. This game offers so much replay value too. Really has it all.
The Nintendo players guide had the 1st detailed maps for Metroid & many other games. It was 1st available to buy in '87. KOKO (KEEP ON KEEPEN ON), my friend!
I can’t imagine the amount of time needed to explore without some kind of guide. Bombing every spot on this map is quite different than Legend of Zelda. This game still holds up though. Gives that same sense of isolation.
@@retronate in Kraid's room, right under the door's ledge. The ledge is two blocks wide. The e tank is in the left column of blocks, 4 from the top. I normally jump into the lava (or juice as you put it) and jump then shoot to expose the e tank in the wall. Then, I jump out of the lava to on top of the ledge (directly next to the door). I turn into the morph ball, and just go off of the ledge towards the lava. Immediately, once you start your fall, press and hold right. you will fit into the 1 square holding the e tank. I hope that helps.
@@retronate if a Metroid grabs you, the only way out is to morph into a ball, and keep smashing that bomb button while holding left or right on the control pad to get out. Yes hidden energy tank. At 40:18 you eneter Kraids base to fight him. In that room, the small platform you enter on, the blue block just above the gray blocks(next to the lava) is a hidden energy tank. Shoot that block and get the tank. Problem is you may get stuck there. So perhaps get it before you kill Kraid, use the ice beam to freeze his throwing horns, stand on it then jump to his platform. The high jump boots may be enough to get you out. I always did Kraid before Ridley but I like how you played.

i've never played this game....ever. but i absolutely adored super metroid....played that a billion times. i have this game, both versions, the rerelease and the original, cib.
@@xphiles2345 i love super Metroid. You can really see the roots of that game in this one…including the homage they pay to the original mother brain in the beginning.
I rarely get the Wave Beam when I play (that's WAY down in the catacombs), but I never miss the Screw Attack! I don't know how you made it without it..... The last time I played I think it was last year, and I was trying to get the best ending, and I managed in about 44 minutes. I skipped many of the Missile pickups just like you did (Kraid and Ridley give you 75 each), and that's enough to finish the game. Such a classic! Nice job!
@@robertanderson2898 the screw attack is one of my faves but just didn’t have the path mapped out to get it with the best ending. I’ll be doing super Metroid this year as well. So looking forward to that one. It’s awesome
@@retronate One I still haven't gotten to on the Snes...... I owned Final Fight 1-3, Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Seceret of Evermore, Breath of Fire I and II, Super Castlevania IV, WWF Raw, WWF Royal Rumble, TMNT IV, Mario World, Mario All-Stars, Mario Kart, and a few others before I sold them over 10 years ago. I re-found (not a word, lol), DKC 1, Royal Rumble, TMNT IV, and the 3 Mario games at least.....
His mother was a mudder… nice! Excellent video again. You can also get varia without high jump if you get the enemy to fly up through the ceiling then freeze it. The door method seems like cheating. The enemy way is tactful. :)
@@erichzaun4168 yeah I wanted to model a more “glitchless” run since so much of that is predicated on timing. The glitch speedruns of this game are WILD though
I remember grabbing the Varia suit early using a tricky jump technique, where you bomb jump, and then tap up to come out of the Morph Ball form and perform a quick standing jump while in the air.
Yeah there is also a way to do it getting caught in the door after it closes? Idk I always feel weird about glitches. I feel like it takes away from how devs envisioned the game being played
33:02 They left visual clues all over the place. Like having one set of blocks that look different from all the others. Earlier when you were on your way to Ridley, there were some with large bubbles in them, and then two rows with none that really stood apart from the rest. Other times you'll notice enemies float up below you (first ice beam location), which meant there was a chamber beloe. Once you recognize this dynamic, then you go around looking for other things that stand out. So there is some amount of random searching involved. But at the time, we maybe only owned a few games. Grinding away at Metroid all day on a Saturday was how we figured it all out. Also, kids would share passwords and secrets with their friends at school, or we'd all take turns playing it together. The fun of the game was in how it made you feel isolated and anxious when trying to unlock progress, by yourself, with no real help. Just like Samus was experiencing.
@@davezad couldn’t have said it better myself. It was a masterfully crafted game. The feeling of isolation and being completely consumed by that atmosphere is what makes it one of the best still today.
@retronate This is making me feel nostalgic for those days. We used to rent games and then only have a few days to try them out. It was always exciting to finally own the cartridge. They had a tv show called Captain N the Game Master where new titles were previewed. Hadn't thought about that in decades. Everything about this game is flawless, beautiful game, damn the music really gets to me , sounds funny but I cry when I hear the music sometimes especially the end song , brings me back to 1992 playing this game in my cold room with my brother

12:55 These spawning bugs that rise up and fly at you are the best place to farm. They have them just before the entrance to Mother Brain's lair, also.
Kraid's Lair Theme is best theme! The areas of the game are: Brinstar(Start), Kraid' Lair, Upper Norfair, Lower Norfair/Ridley's Lair, Tourian. One cool thing about the Mother Brain room is that the Zebetites will not respawn after you destroy them. I think if you freeze the Rinkas in the Mother Brain room, they will not respawn until unfrozen, at least that's how it is in Super Metroid.
Great videos and magnificent walkthroughs. One nitpick though: Simon's Quest wasn't the first Metroidvania Castlevania. That started with Symphony of the Night.

I LOVE Metroid!! I've beaten it getting the two-piece suit, mostly I got the second one-piece suit… and I have the Famicom Disk System version with a save feature and money bags… I've even beaten it on a live stream!! 1986 it was really cool!! And you keep saying rockets, they're missiles!! But then again, Varia suit was SUPPOSED to be Barrier(バリア) Suit, so… 🤔🤔 Brinstar, Hideout I (Kraid), upper Norfair(purple bubble area), Hideout II(Lower Norfair, Ridley's area) and last area is Tourian… I do that trick you are referring to at 32:45 or so…

I played this as a kid. Beat is a couple years ago as a guy in his 40's. This is a tough game, but once you know where to go, and what to do, it does get much easier.

@ off the top of my head Bloody tears from Simons quest, Moon theme from Ducktales, Flashman from MM2 have stood out as the strongest on my going through these outside of Kraid’s layer. Matoyas theme from Final fantasy as well.
11:22 I timed it out with full jumps (just hold down A the entire duration of the jump to get max height). Do you have High Jump Boots? if Yes, 3 full jumps is the timing needed to land on reappearing blocks if No, 4 full jumps is the timing needed to land reappearing blocks (or to get the knockback effect of being inside of a block that reappears like your Ice Beam example) That Ice Beam example, in your case as shown in the video, would require 4 full jumps to get the knockback required to get out. Hope that helps.🍻
32:13 Yeah, I use it when I run this game. I normally get the bombs and then go straight for Varia. I normally go for Screw Attack as well, because i find that it takes less time to run the rest of the game if you have it than the time it takes to get it. So, for me, it becomes a time saver. The glitch is opening a door, and inching into the door's space without going through the screen transition. the door closes on you, and you turn into the morph ball. then, you stand up, and then morph ball again. Every time you stand up, you will move upwards just a little. you get into a rhythm after doing it for a while, but you can get stuck if you don't do it correctly. I use it for Varia early, and for escaping Ridley's area faster than walking around (without dying - because that is normally the fastest way out besides using a 2nd controller to quick reset back to the elevator into the area). You can just go back up those big pits instead of using the 3 other rooms.
@@drunknpoet I certainly appreciate those shortcuts, and I’m sure it’s just me, but I don’t love glitch runs. Idk something about trying to experience the game the way (I believe) the devs intended. At the same time I’m mega impressed by those that master them. They’re mesmerizing.
I made a bunch of versions of different songs from this game. It was part of helping a TH-camr (The Nerdporeal Lifeform) do a retrospective on this game. I highly recommend it, but am biased (obviously lol). If you are interested, check it out. It is called "Kraid's Demise" and I think that you will like it. (on TH-cam)

Where i came from, we just picked games that you would become the subject matter expert on. I was Zelda, metal gear, and everything Capcom. My friend was a metroid and Konami guy. Weird how that played out. I will beat metroid before I go.
@@1mc-show I never sensed any sort of battle between those who preferred capcom over Konami or vice versa. But I do think we were drawn to one or the other a bit more. But you’re right - we had those games that were “ours” and we’d display our ability to beat them for our friends who couldn’t.
Looks good but not the best graphically in my opinion. Ninja Gaiden and Crystalis are among games I’ve played recently that have better graphics imo. But they certainly don’t take away from the experience.
Oh this is gonna be a fun one to watch... I always sucked at Metroid games, as far back as the NES and as most recent as Metroid Prime on the Wii. I guess it was just never my thing. 🤷♂
Super Metroid plays on the same planet, but it is a complete new game with new bosses, new areas, new items and new gameplay mechanics. If you look close, you can find some remaining paths from Metroid 1 in Metroid 3, especially in the beginning.
Nintendo had game guides that they released for most of their best games that had maps and locations of certain items. So yeah, it wasn't as hard for us that grew up in that era to find things. Just hard to remember everything. It was designed for the 10-12 year old generation of kids.
Personally I always get the screw attack. It makes running through this game fast. Then again I am also getting the ice beam and varia suit well before the high jump boots.
@retronate I won't pretend to be some sort of great speedrunner of this game, but I have done it in under 45 minutes. I also haven't done it in some time. But there's a great aspect of this game many might not realize, and that is its ability to pull you back in with ease, and speedrunning it is like a bike. You never really forget how to do it
Screw attack is both an attack and a shield, but you did fairly well without it.🎉 We shot everything and bombed everything, just like in Zelda🔥💣 The Metroid’s are nowhere near as scary as you made them sound. Bombs are friends 💣 💣 💣 😅 All in all great run and nice to see that bikini ending once again.😊
At about 40:55 you missed the E-tank in Kraid's room under the door. Somehow this made me really REALLY frustrated. :D EDIT: Would've saved a lot of butt clenching at 53:00 too. :D
@@johankustonen5329 hahahaha. The NES butt clench is a patented move from that era. Yes the Kraid e tank was mentioned by a few others and my not knowing about it prior is definitely frustrating. I shall not make this mistake again.

@@ChristianLaurila you’re speaking the truth. We’d go around for hours just on the hunt for everything. No guides. Only using tips we got from friends or the random magazine article. Completely different world
21:58 This is supposed to be that "cruel" hint to use the "bomb jumping" mechanic. It's more a knowledge check with a dev skip than impassable. 38:00 you make this a bit confusing, "Drop down to the LEFT" and then you jump over to the right side to a ledge. And you don't explain this well. 46:57 of all my life until now, i never knew this was how you do it. i've watched 100% speedruns, Any% speedruns, glitched speedruns, NO ONE shoots those into existence. They enter this room and the bridge is "just there."

If you push to the right as you drop down underwear the door you want to enter, you’ll land on that little ledge beneath. When you're trying to kill Mother Brain, the best technique I've found is to freeze those red rings. It makes firing off the rockets on her sooo much easier. Awesome run though and I love your channel. I watch it while I'm working.

I was coming down here to say this, yeah. The rings respawn if you destroy them, but can't if they're frozen and out of the way of the firing.

@@lishd glad to share! We’ve adopted 4 boys, 1 from Bulgaria, 1 from China, and 2 from Ukraine. Three of our guys have significant developmental disabilities, ranging from severe autism, hydracephalus, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy among some others. Our boy from China has some physical challenges, but not nearly as severe as the others and is on a more typical developmental track.
But those experiences were, and continue to be, the most eye opening of my life. I’ve actually thought about doing an “about me” type of vid and maybe this comment bumps that up a touch in priority.

Wow. It looks like everyone who liked made a comment so I need to make one too? I remember making my own graph paper map of as much of this game as I could find: pushing as far as I could before Samus exploded just to try and figure out where all the power ups were. I beat the game and played through with the discolored suit and then I got the best ending. I never realized there was as many different endings until very recently, and I somehow avoided the worst ending, despite all my mapping. I really enjoy your videos!

The Nintendo players guide had the 1st detailed maps for Metroid & many other games. It was 1st available to buy in '87. KOKO (KEEP ON KEEPEN ON), my friend!
I can’t imagine the amount of time needed to explore without some kind of guide. Bombing every spot on this map is quite different than Legend of Zelda. This game still holds up though. Gives that same sense of isolation.
You forgot about the hidden energy tank in kraids lair!! Also if a metroid gets you, morph into a ball and bomb your way out

@@retronate in Kraid's room, right under the door's ledge.
The ledge is two blocks wide. The e tank is in the left column of blocks, 4 from the top.
I normally jump into the lava (or juice as you put it) and jump then shoot to expose the e tank in the wall. Then, I jump out of the lava to on top of the ledge (directly next to the door). I turn into the morph ball, and just go off of the ledge towards the lava. Immediately, once you start your fall, press and hold right. you will fit into the 1 square holding the e tank.

Yes hidden energy tank. At 40:18 you eneter Kraids base to fight him. In that room, the small platform you enter on, the blue block just above the gray blocks(next to the lava) is a hidden energy tank. Shoot that block and get the tank. Problem is you may get stuck there. So perhaps get it before you kill Kraid, use the ice beam to freeze his throwing horns, stand on it then jump to his platform. The high jump boots may be enough to get you out. I always did Kraid before Ridley but I like how you played.

If a Metroid grabs you, you can just bomb yourself out of its claws.
I tried this unsuccessfully many times. Maybe I’ll give it another go.

I rarely get the Wave Beam when I play (that's WAY down in the catacombs), but I never miss the Screw Attack! I don't know how you made it without it..... The last time I played I think it was last year, and I was trying to get the best ending, and I managed in about 44 minutes. I skipped many of the Missile pickups just like you did (Kraid and Ridley give you 75 each), and that's enough to finish the game. Such a classic! Nice job!

I owned Final Fight 1-3, Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Seceret of Evermore, Breath of Fire I and II, Super Castlevania IV, WWF Raw, WWF Royal Rumble, TMNT IV, Mario World, Mario All-Stars, Mario Kart, and a few others before I sold them over 10 years ago.
I re-found (not a word, lol), DKC 1, Royal Rumble, TMNT IV, and the 3 Mario games at least.....

@@erichzaun4168 yeah I wanted to model a more “glitchless” run since so much of that is predicated on timing. The glitch speedruns of this game are WILD though
I remember grabbing the Varia suit early using a tricky jump technique, where you bomb jump, and then tap up to come out of the Morph Ball form and perform a quick standing jump while in the air.
Yeah there is also a way to do it getting caught in the door after it closes? Idk I always feel weird about glitches. I feel like it takes away from how devs envisioned the game being played
33:02 They left visual clues all over the place. Like having one set of blocks that look different from all the others. Earlier when you were on your way to Ridley, there were some with large bubbles in them, and then two rows with none that really stood apart from the rest. Other times you'll notice enemies float up below you (first ice beam location), which meant there was a chamber beloe. Once you recognize this dynamic, then you go around looking for other things that stand out. So there is some amount of random searching involved. But at the time, we maybe only owned a few games. Grinding away at Metroid all day on a Saturday was how we figured it all out. Also, kids would share passwords and secrets with their friends at school, or we'd all take turns playing it together. The fun of the game was in how it made you feel isolated and anxious when trying to unlock progress, by yourself, with no real help. Just like Samus was experiencing.
@@davezad couldn’t have said it better myself. It was a masterfully crafted game. The feeling of isolation and being completely consumed by that atmosphere is what makes it one of the best still today.
@retronate This is making me feel nostalgic for those days. We used to rent games and then only have a few days to try them out. It was always exciting to finally own the cartridge. They had a tv show called Captain N the Game Master where new titles were previewed. Hadn't thought about that in decades.

12:55 These spawning bugs that rise up and fly at you are the best place to farm. They have them just before the entrance to Mother Brain's lair, also.

The areas of the game are: Brinstar(Start), Kraid' Lair, Upper Norfair, Lower Norfair/Ridley's Lair, Tourian.
One cool thing about the Mother Brain room is that the Zebetites will not respawn after you destroy them.
I think if you freeze the Rinkas in the Mother Brain room, they will not respawn until unfrozen, at least that's how it is in Super Metroid.

I LOVE Metroid!! I've beaten it getting the two-piece suit, mostly I got the second one-piece suit… and I have the Famicom Disk System version with a save feature and money bags… I've even beaten it on a live stream!! 1986 it was really cool!! And you keep saying rockets, they're missiles!! But then again, Varia suit was SUPPOSED to be Barrier(バリア) Suit, so… 🤔🤔

I played this as a kid. Beat is a couple years ago as a guy in his 40's. This is a tough game, but once you know where to go, and what to do, it does get much easier.

@ off the top of my head Bloody tears from Simons quest, Moon theme from Ducktales, Flashman from MM2 have stood out as the strongest on my going through these outside of Kraid’s layer. Matoyas theme from Final fantasy as well.
11:22 I timed it out with full jumps (just hold down A the entire duration of the jump to get max height).
Do you have High Jump Boots?
if Yes, 3 full jumps is the timing needed to land on reappearing blocks
if No, 4 full jumps is the timing needed to land reappearing blocks (or to get the knockback effect of being inside of a block that reappears like your Ice Beam example)
That Ice Beam example, in your case as shown in the video, would require 4 full jumps to get the knockback required to get out.

32:13 Yeah, I use it when I run this game. I normally get the bombs and then go straight for Varia. I normally go for Screw Attack as well, because i find that it takes less time to run the rest of the game if you have it than the time it takes to get it. So, for me, it becomes a time saver.
The glitch is opening a door, and inching into the door's space without going through the screen transition. the door closes on you, and you turn into the morph ball. then, you stand up, and then morph ball again. Every time you stand up, you will move upwards just a little. you get into a rhythm after doing it for a while, but you can get stuck if you don't do it correctly. I use it for Varia early, and for escaping Ridley's area faster than walking around (without dying - because that is normally the fastest way out besides using a 2nd controller to quick reset back to the elevator into the area). You can just go back up those big pits instead of using the 3 other rooms.
@@drunknpoet I certainly appreciate those shortcuts, and I’m sure it’s just me, but I don’t love glitch runs. Idk something about trying to experience the game the way (I believe) the devs intended. At the same time I’m mega impressed by those that master them. They’re mesmerizing.
I made a bunch of versions of different songs from this game. It was part of helping a TH-camr (The Nerdporeal Lifeform) do a retrospective on this game. I highly recommend it, but am biased (obviously lol).

Where i came from, we just picked games that you would become the subject matter expert on. I was Zelda, metal gear, and everything Capcom. My friend was a metroid and Konami guy. Weird how that played out. I will beat metroid before I go.
@@1mc-show I never sensed any sort of battle between those who preferred capcom over Konami or vice versa. But I do think we were drawn to one or the other a bit more. But you’re right - we had those games that were “ours” and we’d display our ability to beat them for our friends who couldn’t.

Looks good but not the best graphically in my opinion. Ninja Gaiden and Crystalis are among games I’ve played recently that have better graphics imo. But they certainly don’t take away from the experience.
Oh this is gonna be a fun one to watch... I always sucked at Metroid games, as far back as the NES and as most recent as Metroid Prime on the Wii. I guess it was just never my thing. 🤷♂

So is super Metroid a remake of this game with added content?
Super Metroid plays on the same planet, but it is a complete new game with new bosses, new areas, new items and new gameplay mechanics. If you look close, you can find some remaining paths from Metroid 1 in Metroid 3, especially in the beginning.
Different game, but has some of the same layout in the beginning. It’s my personal favorite on the SNES also.
If you freeze the rings around Mother Brain they do not respawn while frozen and you can unload rockets on her without taking damage and knockback.

Nintendo had game guides that they released for most of their best games that had maps and locations of certain items. So yeah, it wasn't as hard for us that grew up in that era to find things. Just hard to remember everything. It was designed for the 10-12 year old generation of kids.

Personally I always get the screw attack. It makes running through this game fast. Then again I am also getting the ice beam and varia suit well before the high jump boots.
Yeah I’m not at that level yet. Haven’t put in the time to get that attack efficiently either. Something to shoot for!
@retronate I won't pretend to be some sort of great speedrunner of this game, but I have done it in under 45 minutes. I also haven't done it in some time. But there's a great aspect of this game many might not realize, and that is its ability to pull you back in with ease, and speedrunning it is like a bike. You never really forget how to do it

You can morph ball and bomb to make the metroids let you go if they grab you.

Spot on critique at 38:00. I tripped over my words. If you push to the right as you drop down underwear the door you want to enter, you’ll land on that little ledge beneath. Then ice beam the enemy above you, hop on top, and jump up to the door.
