  • This applies to the newer 2013+ Altimas , Maxima, Murano, Rogues, and Pathfinder with NS3 CVT FLUID
    Vehicles with ns2 fluid should have a dipstick
    The process is the same minus the fluid drain at the end.

    Recently did my 2012 Murano at 98k. Purchased with 82k with no history of fluid servicing. Dealership refused to service because I was too close to 100k. Drain and fill went smoothly. 10mm hex was a bit of a pain to get off...but PB Blaster and an extension pipe got it done. 5 quarts came out via drain plug...5 quarts went in via dipstick neck. Fluid was very dark brown...original fluid maybe?! No prior transmission issues or symptoms. Shifts smoothly just as it did before. Also replaced the external filter behind the driver's side wheel...not sure if this was necessary but it was cheap and convenient. Video was helpful!

    You did a great job of changing the CVT fluid. One of the best of videos I have seen when it comes to; flushing the lines from and to the transmission; but you will play hell trying to find ANY one that does this. But oh, how important it is. Sadly, I know of NO dealer that does it. Also...you said:
    "Do not use aftermarket fluids" WHY? It is my understanding that MOST Nissan dealers USE "aftermarket fluids". Oh indeed yes. Yet Nissan insists (and most of their dealers insist) that we use Nissan CVT fluids. WHY?
    I'll tell you WHY! They, like ALL automobile dealers ), are crooks and use EVERY method they can; to get MORE money out of their customers. Only a blind fool does not know this to be fact absolute. The likelihood of getting a fair deal from any auto dealer in America is nil to none. Oh indeed yes. For 10's of millions of customers are being taken EVERY day all over the USA. Sad, sad and SAD!
    Another question:
    Why would the aftermarket companies (that claim that their fluid IS "safe" for CVT's) risk their business with a horde of law suits? Have you ever heard of a suit against any of the aftermarket CVT fluids companies? I haven't.
    Also; why is the cost of Nissan CVT much higher than the aftermarket fluids; yet they buy from the same companies that their competitors do? Remember Nissan does NOT make their CVT fluids! I'll tell you WHY!

    Love the video, it helped me a lot. A few weeks ago I realized we never had the transmission oil changed on our 2017 Pathfinder with just over 95,000 miles Dealer pretty much refused to do it and said we had some major leaks, quoted us over $3000. I checked, no major leaks. Decided to do the oil myself. Also wanted to do the filters but the dealer doesn't keep those in stock.
    Changed the oil at operating temp. Got about 3 1/2 quarts out, put in 4 quarts. Got about 1/2 quart out through the overflow drain. I used a hand held temp scanner to check the temp of the trans. I used Castrol Transmax oil.
    Then my family and I went on vacation and drove at least 2,613 miles, on highway and in the Smokey Mountains. Had no issues at all.
    I'm going to pick up the filters and gaskets and do the oil again.
    Once again great video.

    Question we’re did you get the copper gasket? And the cooler flush? Also what’s the difference between the cvt oil in the black bottle and the ones in the white ones...they both say ns3 on them but the black ones are substantially cheaper 60 dollars for five but 100 dollars for five white ones... also I talked to the dealership and they say the trans needs a fluid change every 30,000 miles mine is a 2017 Altima with 46000 miles and the car fax does not show that it’s been changed anyway should I be worried... the dealership wants 260 to do the job... seems awfully steep for something so simple and I asked what they do and he says they just change the fluid and use a special tool on the bottom to get the fluid level correct....I assume that’s the same thing as you getting the trans to temperature than pulling tell it drains the way you showed on the video I assume... and finally one more thing since the car has a power train warranty till 60 thousand miles should I just bite the bullet and and pay them 160 in labor for something so simple I’ve changed Tran fluids on other cars and this seems much easier seeing you don’t have to pull the pan however don’t want any excuse regarding the warranty..your expertise in all these regards would be greatly appreciated. I’ll sucribe to your page or whatever if you have one

    • @JavsGarage
      @JavsGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Cooper washer you can get at the dealership or on Amazon. I think they're like $6 for a pack of 10. You can use those for the engine 14mm oil plug and the 19mm trans plug. And as far as the cvt fluid goes I'm only aware of the black NS3 bottles from Nissan. The white bottles from Nissan are NS2 and should not be used for your year vehicle. I'll highly recommend staying with Nissan fluids and not going with aftermarket universal fluid. And as per the cvt fluid service at the dealership I know it's expensive for such a easy job but at least if anything goes wrong they'll be responsible for it. I've seen them warranty transmissions that are out of warranty just because the customer kept up with the maintenance at the dealer. So it really comes down to having them do it and shaving that safe piece of mind or saving a couple bucks and doing it yourself. Hope that helped clear things up

    Having a 13 Rogue personally and hating Nissan's cvt as well, I can say that I have used Aisin NS-2 fluid with no issues in my car. Aisin is a transmission maker and the stuff is even the same color for $13 less a quart. Having put 2.5k after not changing the fluid for 180k on mine it works better than it did. I am not sure if Aisin makes the NS-3 fluid but I would put money on it. If your car is under warrenty, get Nissan to do it. Bite the cost bullet because if they find a foreign fluid and your cvt explodes it wont be under warranty. As mine is well over that point and working fine no worries here. Biggest issue with the tranny is driving like an asshole and overheating them. I have towed well over the recommended weight for 1200 miles in mine along with the no tranny fluid changes and thank god it still runs great. My fluid was the same as what came out of this one when he changed it. Follow the recommendation for changes and dont drive like its an automatic tranny and a race car and it will last.

My question is. Would changing out the transmission filter and flushing out the cooler fix the problem? Or is it more of a tcu problem. Ps Ive changed the gas pedal already and did a re learn procedure with a scanner so i know the gas pedal isnt the problem. I thought id ask someone who actually works with nissan everyday. Any info would be great thanks.

    • @JavsGarage
      @JavsGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be over heating and in Fail-Safe mode. I've seen it where changing the fluid does help fix it but also when it doesn't. Sounds like it could be a valve body issue also. If you have a way to scan the transmission and check and see the cvt A/B count that tells you if it's overheating. It should be at 0 anything more than that means it's overheating

I watched Tech through the glass and I saw him shifting gears as you did. It's like a regular paper filter. If you look at the cvt rebuild video you'll see it being removed.

      @@JavsGarage Thanks. I only wondered because some vehicles have just a fine mesh screen.

    Great video! About to do a ‘15 quest. Service manual procedure says 3 liter (3.17qts). Does that sound like enough to you? The service manual also says cvt fluid capacity is 8 5/8 qts, so I’m a little confused. Thank you!

      Thank you! 🤙
      A drain and fill is always around 4 quarts. The 8qts is if you take the cvt apart and rebuild it.

      Symbiote215 i finished the drain and fill yesterday, following the service manual procedure. I used a cheap OBD2 WiFi adapter and OBD Fusion to monitor temps. Took 7qts total, doing the drain and fill twice per instruction. I followed your advice, letting out the fluid until it was a small stream. I then used CVTZ50 android app to reset cvt degradation counter. I was curious about the Nissan service manual, as it says “when the fluid slows to a drip”. That seems vague. It doesn’t says small “stream” as your video states, along with ever other forum/video I’ve found. Any thoughts?

      As long as it's not pouring out like it was when I first took the 14mm out it should be good. There really isn't a specification. I asked the master techs at my job they all said the same thing

    Awesome video! This is the best video for a cvt fluid change for sure . After watching this I feel super confident doing the job on my own. My vehicle is a 2015 Altima 2.5, I was wondering if there is a serviceable filter that needs to be changed aswell? Thanks

    • @JavsGarage
      @JavsGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome 👍 glad to hear! The filter is changed only during a rebuild. I have a video on doing a rebuild where I change it . But for a fluid service it's but not really needed to be replaced

    Thanks for the video! I have a Pathfinder that my wife and I bought early this year. I plan on changing the CVT fluid very soon. I have a question about the magnets. When I changed the transmission fluid on my Prius, the drain bolt had a magnet on it that collected all the metal in transmission over time. I was able to clean it off and put it back with no problem. Are there magnets on drain bolt for the Nissan? If not, where are the magnets? And do they need to be wiped clean?

      The plugs are not magnetic unfortunately. Only the rear differential and transfer case have magnets. As far as ordering them I would check Google or Amazon just need to find the bolt size

    Hi, was wondering if it’s all the same stuff and process for a 16 versa note? Thank you in advance

    • @JavsGarage
      @JavsGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's an extra step when draining the fluid

    • @GDAMNYT
      @GDAMNYT 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the versa? What would that extra step when draining the fluid be? Sorry. I’m not all that experienced. Just a broke college kid lol

      @@GDAMNYTAfter removing the 19mm drain bolt there's a H5 Allen bolt inside that needs to be removed to drain it completely and then reinstalled. But you can always just remove the 10mm bolts on the oil pan and drain it like that but then you'll need a new gasket for the pan. After that it's the same procedure just reinstall the drain plug and add the cvt fluid,set it warm up and remove the 19mm drain plug so it can self level out. I'll try and make a video on these soon

      Is it CVT or automatic? If it's automatic it will probably not have it

    • @JavsGarage

      I would try and Google it
      If you have a cooler with the extra smaller lines you have an external cooler if not you don't have it just coolant lines. Not all cvts have trans coolers. They make a kit that runs roughly$500-600
