- Since I was my daughter’s age, I’ve known about this bug and have had interest in it. I kept in touch with Mr. Z even after I moved from the old neighborhood and almost 40 years would pass before he’d make that long awaited call to allow me to buy his 1966 bug. The following morning I was there to pick it up. I assured him it would be in good hands and that I’d teach my kids to drive stick in it and eventually he’d see it cruising the neighborhood like I’d seen it do so when I was a teen. And with that, the torch was passed on. #vw #socal #vwbug #stories #nostalgia #germany
Good job DAD!!!
Brilliant, she looks so happy with it 👍 nice one🇬🇧
She’s super stoked. And I just LOVE it when she asks to go to the shop and work on her bug.
Three important recommendations: 1) Keep it stock. Don't mess with the suspension 2) Don't try to drive it like a modern car...70 to 80 mph on the freeway. 65 mph is about maximum for these cars. Pushing them overheats (destroys) the engine. 3) Carry a fire extinguisher under the driver's seat (for quick access). It appears that somebody already had a small engine fire (note the paint on the rear deck lid.).
Great point Steve! Thank you for sharing those. As a sidenote, the previous owner tried to start it with a remote fuel can. A big no-no. It caught on fire for split second henceforth, as you mentioned, the burn mark on the deck lid.
This was amazing. You're a great dad my man! Currently. Working on my sons 1979 VW Bus fuel injected bus. Hes six but has been working with me on everything. No where near your daughters age, but this was cool to see. Maybe my teen age son will be into cars and can snag a '69 VW Bug for him. Otherwise I have a long way to go with my young one
Good Dad. Keep this old car thing going in your and our family's. It makes better people. It doesn't hurt that it's a super rad car too. 🤙🏻
Ha! Thank you! 🤙
awesome ! i got my 1st bug when i was 15 back in 1998 im currently building my 11th bug i had 12 of them since 98 sold my12th t get a 66c10. you guys have fun!
Very cool!
It’s so cool the young lady is interested in old cars, specifically Vintage Air Cooled VW! Most kids her age won’t even consider driving a manual transmission car. I love her enthusiasm and you helping her with the project. Warms my heart ❤️
I think it’s proof that the love for cars is genetic. Personally, I am elated that she enjoys it so much. Especially working on it.
I love this. Reminds me when I fell in love with my neighbors 74 Super Beetle at eight years old. Ended up buying my first VW when I was about her age, a 1967 VW Beetle.
I also hope that I can pass on the Volkswagen virus to my kids. Well done, Eddy ❤
Yeah, it’s interesting. Some kids get on board. But so many don’t. I’ve always been surprised by the amount of guys in the business that have kids, and their kids have never had any interest whatsoever in the business, nor in the cars.
This is awesome. I love that you are teaching your daughter to drive and love these old vee-dubs. This particular '66 is mint!
Thank you for the kind words. I feel like if we don’t share it with the younger generations, our hobby will wither away. If they’re not taught anything about it and don’t have anything to get excited for, then it makes sense that it will just go away. And yes, this little bug is actually in really nice shape. The paint off the decklid was from a small little mishap that the original owner and his son caused. Trying to get the motor going with a remote fuel can. Do the math. 🔥
This is what it's all about. Plus she can look back on this video from years to come. Having a daughter myself, I know the excitement in her & sharing the memories of things like this. This is just so wholesome and awesome. :)
Thank you so much for the kind kind words! I was so happy, as well as proud, to share this, because so many kids today just spend their lives on electronics. I was so stoked when she genuinely showed interest in learning about these cars. I’ve already had her take apart an engine before. So it was awesome that she was happy to work on this car before even knowing it was going to be hers. I think it will inspire other people to do some projects like this, or similar, with their kids. It’s the only way to, keep the hobby going in my eyes.
Congratulations Ellen, you will definately have the most unique car at school. No one else could possibly have a car with more historical heritage and significance! I'm glad you want to keep the originality, even with it's current "patina" it would get a place of prominance at any cars & coffee, and probably a lot of offers from all kinds of people, Porsche and VW and old German car nuts will all like it. Have fun!
Completely agree! Probably one of the few cars at school that one can perform the work on it themselves. Also hard to drive and text too, so that’s an added safety bonus. 😊
Right, total focus required!
That is so awesome to have your first bug at 14 years old.
It really is! What was really cool was the fact that she enjoyed working on it before it was even a thought that it could be hers. So the interest was genuine.
When you guys are brave enough for that first driving lesson, theres a huge open parking lot (well, at least there was in 1974 when i learned to drive!), in El Segundo at the TRW building, pretty safe place for fledging teens to try out all the pedals and controls without their fathers having heart attacks. Felicidades, El Patrón, happy to see your next generation catching the VW bug!✌️
Great suggestion! Seems like we’re running out of wide open places for the kids to really give stuff a try without being too scared.
My daughter is 12, she loves my bug & said she wants a bus! A few days ago I told her to jump in the drivers seat & had her turn on the car & back it up. It was a cool first experience for both of us 😅
That’s awesome!!
Great to see young people loving old VWs…cool first car
Cheers Jim!
Please keep it 6 volt I had the same 66 VW and same color wish I still had it too. They can go just about anywhere you want to go.
Any pictures of yours? It’d be cool to see.
@@EddyCollins-TZN168 no my VW I had it in the early 80s be sure and keep your valves adjusted I learned that the hard way it suck a valve on cylinder number 3 but I rebuilt my engine and had a lot of fun driving it. Wish I still had it now that I live in Maine.
@@kennethcolbert2921 oh yes, good old number three. Once we get the interior done, we’re going to be working on the brakes and I will definitely be teaching her about timing, valve adjustment, oil, changes easy. Even though you’re in Maine, I bet you could still find a little car, and if not around your neck of the woods, somewhere out here on the West Coast and have it shipped over.
Awesome
❤
Great story! Bitten by the Bug at such a young age. I got my first Bug at 16 and still smile when I drive mine at 59. God bless you guys. You will have the coolest car at school 😀
Love the simple motor. Easy to work on and parts were cheap. VW sold 22 million Beetles over 70-year period.
So awesome! What a clean car as a first car
🙏
thank you, nice positive video
Thank you! That’s my goal….positive, educational and entertaining videos. And hopefully inspiring.
A good gift for her would be to get her the birth certificate of the beetle from the VW museum in Germany
Awesome idea!
The young lady has a TERRIFIC 1st car waiting for her !! Its a great looking bug. Enjoy it : )
Hey Eddy ! is it a 6 volt .
It is. But I want her to be visible and be able to see at night. Plus, it’s easier should it ever need a jump.
@@EddyCollins-TZN168 yeah 12 volt halogen lights from Wally World work 2X brighter than 6 volt
Oh, and a first year ball joint suspension
Good for you, girl, teach all the kids at school. i know how to work on old cars, and it's great to see a generation liking old clasic cars such as a VW from historic years. Good luck with learning all you can..
Yes! Thank you!
Thats a cool little car, have fun.
Thank you!
