I haven’t seen Jim carrey in movies before but fun fact, Jim carrey originally tried to be ian Malcolm in Jurassic park but later jeff glowblum ended up being it which I’m not complaining!

"these kids don't speak up enough" one of the reasons the author decided to write this story was because he wanted to find a way to teach children that sometimes adults are wrong and don't have their best interest at hearts. sometimes we tend to teach children to respect and trust adults just because they are adults, and to not challenge or confront them. so the author thought a good lesson to teach childern is thay sometimes you can speak up, you can say when an adult has wronged you, because just because you are a child, it does not mean you deserve no respect, which i think is a very powerful message. anyway, you guys should really react to the netflix series, it's really good. i loved the movie when i was a kid, and i think the series manages to keep the quirky eccentric vibe, but they do have time to tell the whole story.
I agree with the message. I think this was one of the contributing factors that helped make me as head strong and outspoken as I am today. I was never afraid to speak up against someone in authority.
As for the Netflix series, I disagree. It succeeds on a technical level and it has the time to really capture the books well, but it just feels entirely soulless and without any semblance of life or heart.
@@NovusIgnis Well, to me Netflix version wins simply because unlike the movie (which had plans for sequels but due to the first movie flop those were called off), it's at least a finished project.

The author kind of took it to far by making every single adult an incompetent idiot. The message goes from “know when to speak up” to “don’t trust any adults”, which is a little problematic.

"Reasonably Attractive" is actually what won me over. So many stories fixate on the gorgeousness or hideousness of their characters in overblown terms. This was a snide way of saying, "they look fine, okay, now let's move on with the story."
To be fair I had a crush on that girl when I was a kid. I think it's the same actress who did Sucker Punch later on if I'm not mistaken.

In the book, the marriage was in the first book and how the kids managed to outwit Count Olaf was when Violet wrote her name on the marriage certificate with her LEFT hand. She’s right handed. So that made the certificate null and void. I love this movie by the way!!

What's interesting is that around that time Jim Carrey never liked doing sequel (aside from Ace Ventura) but he said that he enjoyed doing this movie so much that if they were willing to make sequels, going off the next other books, he was on board because he would get to play different characters as the same actor. I wish we could have had a chance to see that. I simply like the movie because I grew up on it and I was a die hard Jim Carrey fan and could watch anything with him in it, so I loved the movie, the first time I saw it. I also enjoyed the cameos from the all star celebrities from Jane Lynch, Cedric The Entertainer, Jennifer Coolidge, Craig Ferguson, etc.
I've been meaning to watch the series but never got around to it. No disrespect to Neil Patrick Harris because I know a lot of people love his performance a little more, but with Jim, he brought energy, improvisation, and dark humor into the role. His diversity is off the charts. But I'm going check out the series one of these days
Im so happy youre doing this - this movie really was amazing and I loved it so much growing up. I cant fathom why the goth community didnt latch onto it the way they did, say, Nightmare Before Christmas, considering how macabre and gorgeous it is.

This is the one movie I would have loved to see have sequels with the same cast come out! I think the humor here is more brittish and the series has a more American approach. But there's a reason so many amazing people acted in this! By far one of my favorite movies ever! Glad you reacted to it!
You could watch the series if you haven’t, it is just as good as the movie and covers all 13 books!
It wouldn't be a Jim Carrey movie if it wasn't filled with improvisation and an absolute load of humor.
The best facts about this film was that behind the scenes, Jim Carrey forgot many of his lines
so he drafted them on the spot, such as the "give me the line again" dialogue, and much more.
He was absolutely fun, hilarious and just a complete goofball in this movie, and I love that about him.
It also surprised me when I saw Catherine O'Hara just now, because I had completely forgotten
that she was in this movie. So glad to have remembered her. She recently attended Macaulay Culkin's
induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame. So proud of both of them. They deserve nothing less than that.
What’s funny and also interesting is that Catherine O’Hara who played Justice Strauss in the film adaptation of _A Series of Unfortunate Events_ also played Georgina Orwell in "The Miserable Mill" episodes from the Netflix series adaptation of _A Series of Unfortunate Events_ so apparently Catherine O’Hara is literally the only cast member to appear in both the original 2004 film and Netflix series of _A Series of Unfortunate Events_ albeit as two different characters.
It's a joy to see you four together again. Jim Carey really nails this role.

@@Chloe-wu8wl In fact the majority of the reactions such as the Snow White Huntsman films, _The Sorcerer’s Apprentice_ and _A Series of Unfortunate Events_ reactions were recorded weeks (approx 1-2 weeks) before James December 6th announcement video of the channel ending.

Tbh, no, this is probably one of Jim's weakest performances. He leans way too hard on the "funny random physical comedy Ace Ventura Grinch" stuff and is rarely menacing enough. At times he is appropriately evil (some standout lines include both "hello, hello, hello"'s, the "perhaps you should reconsider your hypothesis" with the knife, and the villainous lean in backstage "and what about what I want, hm?"), but for the most part hes just being kinda silly, which doesnt work well. I still love the movie but Id say hes among the weaker elements - and its not even a bad casting cause weve seen him in more dramatic and villainous roles to great success, this is just not it.
It’s been four to seven days since their upload on their final group reaction (supposedly) but it’s impressive that their _A Series of Unfortunate Events_ reaction is at 34k-46k+ views and managed to beat out their previous group reactions viewership of _Huntsman Winters War, Gravity_ and also their group reactions to _Children of Men, Willow, Snow White and the Huntsman,_ and _Annihilation_ and also James and Nobu’s reaction to _Spiderwick Chronicles_ and _The Sorcerer’s Apprentice_ respectively.
If their reaction to this film doesn’t slow down then I expect it to reach within the 50k-75k views by next month.
Lastly to Stella, only the first eleven books of _A Series of Unfortunate Events_ were released before the 2004 film. The twelfth and the thirteenth book were released after the 2004 film.
The Netflix series had 3 seasons which adapted all 13 books.

Olaf used past perfect talking about Josephine. By killing her, he effectively asserted that his grammar was, in fact, correct.
Aunt Josephine's house by Lake Lacrymose was, in common sense terms, FINAL DESTINATION worthy. I mean basically, the whole place was a deathtrap, even its foundation looked unstable!!!!😮
This is a movie I hadn’t thought about in years but I instantly turned the notification on.
Despite not thinking about the movie itself, I’ve drunkenly shouted “he’s just a boy barely out of his OshKosh, B’gosh!” more than a few times.
To this day, I still think that might be the funniest line in the movie!
This movie was my entire childhood. I identified with the Children so much.
Jim Carrey’s Count Olaf was a HUGE inspiration for me becoming an actor myself.
In 2004, the books were literally EVERYWHERE. There were study books with all the secret societies and background on the members along with work books on how to decode all the hidden messages in the books.
It was on par with Harry Potter in terms of world building! A BRILLIANT series and this adaptation will always remain in my top 5 films of all time.
It’s a masterpiece.
Thomas Newman’s score is absolutely immaculate. The otherworldly sounds combined with the orchestral grandiose nature of the arrangements are… I’ve never heard anything like it since.
The violins when they see their childhood home burned at the end of the film will NEVER fail to make me cry.
And “the Letter That Never Came” fills you with so much hope after watching the Baudelaire’s suffer so much.
Not a single cameo is wasted and none of them feel gratuitous.
I know almost every line by heart.
OH! And you all should ABSOLUTELY watch the bloopers/deleted scenes on your own time. Jim Carrey is an effing RIOT.

Reading the book series and watching this movie as a kid was the root of my ‘I-like-twisted-stuff’ phase. Before these books, I was an innocent soul who would’ve never touched anything akin to Tim Burton or Stephen King with a nine-foot pole when they grew up- 😂💀✨
This is such a perfect adaptation of one of my favorite book series. And Jim Carrey's performance is incredible. You rarely see this more subdued side of him.
Kinda odd. As Stella said the series is much more faithful to the series and I was really disappointed watching this in cinema back in the day. Several scenes could have dealt with less Carrey and more Olaf
This is consistently an adaptation that impresses me. I did see the film before reading the books, but I think their tonal choice was immaculate, and they were able to communicate all the right themes and character beats.
I can understand you liking Jim Carrey in this. But I'm not sure I'd call his performance "subdued."

Fun fact: 9:37 Jim Carrey messed up his line for this part, so while staying in character he asked to redo the scene but the crew just kept rolling and kept it in the film

You should listen to the commentary with the director and the author himself, Lemony Snicket, it’s hilariously funny. The author bemoaning the fact that three of his books have been brought to life in the worst possible way and the director is being amnesiac about the whole movie even though he was the one who directed the movie in the first place.
I like to see you guys getting frustrated over the fact the adults don't take the kids seriously, don't believe them, don't listen to them because I believe that's one of the points of this story.
It's even more apparent in the books
The guys thought this was a comedy while the Girls saw it as a drama. Quite interesting to watch the contrast. While they are laughing at pretty much everything and even think of Olaf as a comedic character and everything he does, the girls seemed concerned and worried about the kids. Not saying either one of them is wrong to see the movie as they do, just interesting to see the difference in perception.

I Love Lemony Snicket's Tales of Unfortunate Events! Both the book series and movie were my favorites growing up. Especially the books which I remember reading the whole series as a kid.
Love this movie. Carrey is off the charts. His interaction with Sunny is hilarious. The whole casting is brilliant.

I’ve always loved this movie! Despite it differing somewhat from the books (I think it was based maybe on the first two or three?) Also, there’s a video game for it somewhere out there that I only vaguely remember playing.
The soundtrack though. The soundtrack gets me every time, especially “The Letter That Never Came.”
The wide window section was always my favorite part of this movie. Between Meryl in that gorgeous 1895 (definitely mid 1890s) dress. And the set piece, so much fun.
As someone who’s gotten older I LOVE Meryl Streep in this role. The character is phenomenal yet the way she performs it is spectacular.
The aunt is fearful of everything but rightfully so all her items are vintage/antiques and many are made to be beautiful but dangerous. All the things she warns the children of are things she herself had to acknowledge growing up with those items. The fridges were made out of iron or solid steel if they fell they would crush you. The glass door knobs are beautiful and in reality are built a specific way that does sometimes cause them to slip out of the door knob hole causing the other side to shatter because it wasn’t caught if you push the door open you spread glass around or can step in it. Her things aren’t modern her house isn’t modern and the items inside aren’t designed for children. The chandelier is heavy for her to move on a giant chain and can fall and hurt them she’s fair to tell them not to swing on it or grab at the ropes etc but to stay safe. I always thought she was introducing them to her house/possessions being being exceptionally mindful not of the saftey of the items but purely for the kids sake.
It’s not don’t touch that it’s expensive it’s please don’t touch that it may harm you - and she’s not lying about that danger just giving a fair warning.
I felt that if she was given more time to fix her house for the kids or live with them longer that she would have rearranged it or replaced the dangerous items with casual ones.
Also why does she have these dangerous things if she’s so timid- she’s not afraid for her sake all these dangerous things aren’t dangerous in the least to her she’s completely comfortable and at home around them and can navigate or live or use them without a problem. She’s knowledgeable and smart and gained the items over years having full familiarity. The kids are the only people who aren’t aware of what they are where they are the dangers or the risks that are around them. If she said hey don’t drink out of this cup it’s lead lines she’s probably not bluffing and also just has a collectible that she’s aware of being dangerous but one she can co-exist with without problem
She’s not a nervous nelly for no reason she lost her husband and therefor is terrified of loosing other people she loves, she didn’t like the photo because so few people are living in it. Her adventure for life never really stopped tho she always seemed cautious yet exceptionally daring
I read all of the books and watched the movie in the theater when it came out. Jim Carrey has the right amount of humor and terror to the character.
So many studios were desperately trying to create there own Harry Potter hit from kids books at the time that they all had their own series of unfortunate events with flop after flop. Just as Twilight and Hunger Games had them rushing to copy those series.
You guys should have watched the credits. They are notoriously famous for being some of the best credits to ever be done and the music being played while they are showing is so fitting.
I wish they continued with more sequels with this version! The amazing aesthetic, costume design, editing, and overall the actors were so great at their respective roles.
The movie generated enough movie just not much as they were hoping and I feel it's like a Narnia thing where you would have to swap out actors if they got too old it's not like harry potter where they gradually grow in the series. in the end it made it to a tv series where although i love this movie it was ultimately the better choice!
I remember seeing this back in theaters and everyone thought we were in the wrong theater thanks to this opening. It was hilarious actually. And also, I read I think 9/13 books in the series back in elementary school. I love this series!

There's so much that goes on in the books, so when it's condensed into a film it definitely feels rushed, yet I think this film still did a wonderful job. The netflix series is perfect though, perfectly cast and beautifully shot, and represents the books very well - definitely worth the watch.

I used to be upset with this adaptation but it actually took the series for me to appreciate this for what it is. I like the fact that the two Olafs kind of focused on the different aspects of him…Jim’s focused more on the evil and sinister side and Neil’s was more of the theatrical side (in my opinion). And it shapes the way the story adapts itself to where I love both for what they are
I think one of the most pervasive and unsettling sensations this movie causes, despite all the comedy, is that the children will never have peace and safety as long as Count Olaf lives. It's like having a real life stalker except you're a child and they're an adult with all the power. His presence genuinely made me shudder at times.

Good choice.I know of only one other reactor to have done this one. But it is the perfect Jim Carrey vehicle and the only Jim Carrey film I really like. In all of his other movies he is so over the top his characters are unbelievable. This movie is however already so over the top it fits him like a glove. And the inspired Thomas Newman score is a nice side benefit too.
This film and How the Grinch Stole Christmas are my favorites by him XD Those are my definitions of a perfect fit for him character-wise. Plus the lengths he went through to be the Grinch are honorable, and all for the sake of our entertainment.

@@deadsetondreams1988 I agree that THE GRINCH was also a good fit for his onscreen personna. But having grown up with the animated version I already had a bias, And in seeing his version I didn't notice enough of a difference to justify the remake. He just seemed to me to be doing an impersonation of the original animation. His performance in this movie was, however, undeniably original.
His TV work is another matter, though. And in that category the most memorable thing I've seen him do was an impersonation of Jimmy Stewart in his final years doing an impression of himself on SNL's Joe Pesci show. It's inspired and hilarious. Check it out if you haven't seen it.
The word to describe this type of anachronistic setting is "Uchronia" where you can't comfortably place the world into a single place in time.
It's like Archer or Batman the animated series being both 1960s cold war, or 1930s gangsters but with modern references, technology and quirkiness.
So many of us hope that the girls will continue reacting to movies when the channel ends.

This movie has so much charm and it’s great to see you guys reacting to it. The mansion transition still gets me. It’s a shame so much was cut, not just from the books, but the film. it seems like someone got cold feet and tried to cut out darker scenes at the cost of the characters and emotional beats. It’s very noticeable once you’ve seen them. Olaf’s real establishing scene of what a narcissistic monster he is was cut from the pasta dinner, Aunt Josephine’s death by his hands was also shown on screen and he mocks her and the children the whole time, and his escape from the play is shown instead of it being a rug pull after the cathartic montage. I think they also included too much Jim Carey in the final cut. It seems like he was trying to balance and use the broad goofy self-aggrandizing bits to hint at the truly terrifying narcissistic murderer underneath, but that doesn’t quite come together except in his exchange with Violet and Klaus backstage before the play, and by then the film is almost over.
The video game they made along with this movie was the best! They used to make video games based off shows and movies and they were usually pretty decent. Such a good movie!
I remember being obsessed with this movie as a kid. I got it on DVD and watched it way more times than it's reasonable to watch any movie. Back then I'd started the series but most bookstores in my country didn't have it so it was impossible to get your hands on unless you had parents who would buy it online for you. I was so glad there was a kid in my class whose parents would keep buying her the books and she'd let me borrow them since I returned them in like 2 or 3 days in good condition. So many of us were trying to get their hands on it since it was so hard to find but so good too.
I don't remember if Count Olaf was necessarily funny, but the book itself had a lot of comedy and Olaf was the butt of a lot of jokes. His awfulness was seen as terrible but also something the writer was happy to drag him for in a way kids could laugh at. I always wished that they'd do more movies covering 3 books at a time like they did with this one. It's such a strong story. A tv series was a better choice though.
In 11:50 when they say scary CGI baby they are talking about false information because this is two sisters who play Sunny and they names are Kara and Shelby Hoffman
This is one of those "obscure" small movies that are just chock-full of big name actors. Another example being Penelope. I love coming across these types of movies because they are so fun!

Honestly, this movie has one of the best director commentaries ever, overly funny.

Funny thing is that Catherine O’Hara who played Justice Strauss in the film adaptation of _A Series of Unfortunate Events_ played Georgina Orwell in "The Miserable Mill" episodes from the Netflix series adaptation of _A Series of Unfortunate Events_ so she’s literally the only OG cast member from the film to appear in the Netflix adaptation.
The irony is the actress who plays Violet in the TV series looks almost identical to the actress from the movie.
@@ThunderForce2000 Albeit the only difference is that Emily Browning was 14-15 years old when she played Violet during the filming of the film whereas Malina Weissman who played Violet in the Netflix adaptation was 12-13 years old when she worked on the first season.
This was my comfort movie when I was little, I remember it with so much love (even if the story is more bittersweet than anything) ❤

I've been tough on James on some reactions, but he's absolutely spot-on here about how the movie and books all work, and why. I was thrilled also that Stella has read them all, too! I personally love this movie, it's a great adaptation, and I think Carrey is fabulous as Olaf -- ironically, Olaf is a classic overactor, but Carrey doesn't overact, and every once in awhile he pulls back, which is wonderful. He is genuinely scary. Meanwhile, the kids are all perfect.
Fun fact the actor who plays klaus Liam aiken Also stars in the movie good boy With matthew broderick as the voice of the lead dog that is a great movie you guys got to react to it sometime

Great reaction, Basically just here for Jim Carrey, he is absolutely hilarious in this! For the first day of a workshop I taught, I took clips of different actors saying "hello" like Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire and Jim Carrey's 'Hello hello hello' from this movie also made it into the small 30 second video. It was something silly to kick off students introducing themselves and they loved seeing the clips from movies they knew.
I really love this movie because it's very funny. And Sunny is a very cute baby.

Sunny was actually played by twins, Kara Hoffman and Shelby Hoffman when they were mere toddlers when they appeared as Sunny Baudelaire. Those twin babies are all grown up their 21 years old
I was wondering recently if you guys would react to this movie! I liked the books and the show but I appreciated this movie because I saw it on TV so I didn’t know what it was called but the uniqueness and disturbing elements helped me remember it and find it again.

This only adapted the first three books, but the sequels, remaining ten books were never adapted to Movie, the TV series has 3 seasons, each book was spilt in two 45-50 minutes episodes
Other factors on why the sequels didn’t happen was the box office performance where it grossed $211.5 million worldwide and only grossed $118.6 million in the United States and Canada and $92.8 million in other territories, and with it’s budget being at $140-142 million, Paramount saw the film’s box office as an "Underperformance". On top of that, following the release of the first film Paramount went through a few corporate shakeups between 2004 and 2008, which has led to a delay of the proposed sequels along with work schedule conflicts from its Actors including Jim Carrey and the actors who played Violet and Klaus aged out of their roles.
When this first came out, I disliked it strongly because of how loosely it was adapted, and how the ending is entirely different. But now, all these years later, I can see it more objectively, and I think they did a really good job capturing the strangeness and quirks of the books, while trimming it down to fit into a feature length film, as well as all of the effort they obviously put into it.
This makes me want to reread the books as an adult, though at the same time I dread the idea as just recalling them gets me a little frustrated despite how much I loved them. If you know you know. I haven’t seen the Netflix series yet so maybe it’s finally time.

Babies/toddlers usually are due to how long they can film with them. They need more breaks so it's easier to swap out twins

It's so sad they didn't keep making these movies to finish out the book series, they had the perfect casting. Of course the Netflix series had better pacing, being a series rather than a movie, but personally I didn't like their casting as much as this movie.
But the movie didn’t give Klaus any glasses. And his glasses are a MAJOR plot point in the next book in the series. I wonder how they would’ve accomplished that in the movie universe?
My favorite way of describing a series of unfortunate events is that it appears to take place in the entire last 100 years. All of them. in what location? whatever one works for you. What language are they speaking? to quote the netflix show, "i dont speak anything except for what were speaking right now"
I saw it randomly at elementary school age and it captures the child's helplessness in the adult world perfectly 😁
I'd describe it like this:
like there's "dry humor", this story has/used a "dry darkness" to it, along with also a "dreary, depressing, and despairing darkness" to it as well, it felt very somber, even with all of its lightness, quirkiness, and absurdity
As a kid, I was one of the biggest fans of this. I even had the two Series of Unfortunate Events journals. Ironically, I haven’t seen the show but I have seen this movie.
You all should watch the series - it's so much better. Much closer to the books, and while I love Jim Carrey in the movie, NPH's Olaf is actually scary
Just now realized this: Mr. Poe said blood relatives would inherit the Baudelaire fortune, and Olaf is a distant relative in any case. He could've still gotten the fortune.

I grew up with this film as well as a whole set of the books. And I honestly think the film is better than the series, which in my opinion looking back at them, the books get pretty drawn out and it's clear the author retconned a lot of information to keep the series going.
I know a lot of people prefer the Netflix series, but I vastly prefer the film. The acting, casting, set design, costume & make up and especially the music are all stellar. Thomas Newman (cousin of Randy Newman) did the soundtrack for the film, and it's just beautiful, with some tracks being reminiscent of his other work like Finding Nemo.
The film is unapologetically dark, with death and trauma being a prominent theme. In fact the credits have a creepy nightmarish theme of the Baudelaire's being watched by eyes, just like the eyes of Olaf always following them.
I'm so glad I own a 2 disc copy of this film, as it really shows off all the effort put into the film. Basically every scene is on a soundstage and uses forced perspective creating a really distinct style, especially in combination with the hazy time period (phones in cars and walkie talkies).
And then there's the secret society. I won't spoil too much in case there's people wanting to read the books. But there's some very furtive details throughout the film it's actually quite impressive. One example is the photo Aunt Josephine has, you can spot Snicket/Law in at 34:43 , and a suspiciously blurry character on the right... Olaf?
It certainly would've been interesting to see what more films continuing on from this one would've looked like. But maybe it was for the best they only made one film, as I could imagine sequels not quite hitting the comedy/tragedy tone as well as this.
Anyway, congrats if you made it through my comment, you can tell I'm a bit passionate about this film.
I won't even watch the series. I too owned the books and LOVE this movie, and was sad they couldn't make more. The reason was the actors would have been too old to play the Baudelaire children by the time they would have been able to finish the series. I was so upset and I went on an investigative spiral to figure out why they weren't making more.
I like the series, but I love the movie.
I remember we got the PC game based on this movie when it came out. At first I played Violet’s sections, my brother played Klaus’s, and my sister played Sunny’s. But then my sister got upset because Sunny basically did nothing.
Anyway both this movie and the recent show have their own places in my heart.
Wow, what a nostalgia trip! This series of books was my Harry Potter as a kid, I adored them and their gothic edge. I remember hating this movie when it came out because I thought it was too 'silly' but looking back on it with a better understanding of the books tone I think it handles the atmosphere and camp factor wonderfully! I also didn't notice until now how impress that cast was omg...
the book series was what got me into reading since a very young age, and this movie is one of my all time favorites. Even the Netflix adaptation (witch has a more childlike vibe) is great and it actually has more of the other books in it♥️
I remember seeing this movie as a kid. I LOVED it. Then I read the series when I was 13.

The overall plot ends up being that (from what I remember) the kids' parents were part of a secret group only known as VFD. (I only remember the initials beginning a running gag. As they find SOMETHING with the initials every books, such as Very Fancy Doilies.)
In the end, they end up on a deserted island, alone with Olaf, and find out it was a research base......where their parents had worked....with Olaf.
Apparently, the group had been trying to create some sort of plant hybrid (don't remember if that was the actual goal.) And Olaf had basically tried to steal the idea and betray the rest.
They all end up poisoned, and the one cure ends up being to eat the fruits from the plant hybrid.
LOVE this movie! I watched and watched this as a child it's one of my favourites

The Netflix series is funny (and sometimes sad) and the cast did a very good job, also, it was kinda hard to find a library that had the books in my country, so I loved to to saw what happened with the kids, and the mysteries about their parents and Olaf. But l like more the ambience of the movie and Jim Carrey version of the Count Olaf. I remember I was obcese with the ending secuence as a kid, I still do.
Also, the scene were the Count ask to "do that again", Jim Carrey forgot his line. The play part was a little bit longer. And the aunt Josephine's death scene, well, it wasn't graphic, but as a child, seing that was terrefied
I still love this movie. I like Jim Carrey as Count Olaf and I loved the books. I was disappointed when they didn't continue making the movies for the rest of the books. I have seen the Netflix series of A Series Of Unfortunate Events and while it's good it's just not the same.
This movie is equivalent to a solar eclipse. The sun represents the eyes, the art style, the acting from all the Boudalair children, and all the crazy situations that happen. They’re all masterfully executed. The moon on the other hand represents Jim Carey as Count Olaf. He is just on a whole nother planet with this preformance and I love it.
His line “Everybody be cool” had my family dying of laughter for 5 whole minutes. And “Look it up bookworm!” Has become a tradition of my family whenever one of proves we’re right while another is wrong.

One thing I never noticed my first time watching this: Snicket was very clear when he said "Being afraid of realtors is an irrational fear." But note how that's the *only* one of her fears he calls irrational.
This is one of the BEST movies ever! 😃😍 I’m SO SO glad you guys reacted to this! I grew up through 2000-2006 reading the book series 🙂 They are REALLY dark for a kids series! But scattered with enough hope and light to keep you going haha. And I have so much amazing nostalgia. The Netflix series did a so-so job getting the mood of the books right (some episodes were dark and good, others not really), but this movie I felt did a really close great job to the dark, artistic, gothic, gloomy, beautiful imagery mood and feeling of the books 😍 so I always have a heart soft spot for it.
There are some Easter eggs to the books (in the original, 54:24 Violet nullifies the proposal by signing with her non dominant hand, in the boat she originally used a mirror to create a fire and the mirror is seen. Also a BUNCH of references to the secret organization VFD that the series surrounds (the newspaper in the train shop Olaf is holding 19:46 has an acronym, so does the Marvelous Marriage banner 48:32, also next to the spyglass 5:53 in the burnt house it clearly says “VFD”)
