    But or Rent - Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events - • Lemony Snicket's A ser...
After the three young Baudelaire siblings are left orphaned by a fire in their mansion, they are carted off to live with their distant relative, Count Olaf (Jim Carrey). Unfortunately, Olaf is a cruel, scheming man only after the inheritance that the eldest Baudelaire, Violet (Emily Browning), is set to receive. The children escape and find shelter with their quirky Uncle Monty (Billy Connolly) and, subsequently, their phobic Aunt Josephine (Meryl Streep), but Olaf is never far behind.

I really recommend watching the TV show - The author was a writer and producer on it and it’s what he wanted the movie to be (I don’t think he was a big fan of the film)
Much more is explained and, as someone who was obsessed with the books growing up, I absolutely loved it. It’s just SO good.

No, you're right, Jim Carrey played Scrooge in " A Christmas Caroll ".
I didn't see a lot of his movies but this role is the funniest for me.
Fun fact : when Count Olaf asks to Klaus to give him the line again was in fact improvised by Jim Carrey because he forgot his lines. That's why they look at him like that.
In the book, Violet is save of the wedding because she's right-handed but signed the paper with her left hand (so technically, she didn't sign it with her own hand)

19:17 Snakes can in fact be "milked"! That's what you call gathering the venom of a snake. You hold onto the back of their heads and put them right in front of a cup with a plastic lid. The snake bites down, and injects the venom like they would with a prey animal. So you end up with a cup of snake venom, which can be used for research, or medical purposes like making antivenom. Depending on what snake is being milked, this can be a pretty scary job, I definitely couldn't do it. There's lots of videos of it on youtube, and it's crazy to see how the venom spurts out of their fangs. It doesn't hurt the snake, and doesn't take a lot of time, but it is pretty intense.

Unpopular opinion but as a massive childhood fan of the books, I still like this movie better than the Netflix series (although it's not bad). The series is more plot accurate to the books but imo the movie did a better job at nailing the emotional depth and sense of melancholy underneath all the wackiness of the plot. The kids had more time in this to actually sit with their grief whereas the show's script was a bit too fast-paced to allow for that emotional breathing room, which I think is necessary for the tragedy of the premise to really hit home. I like both adaptations but this one will always be my favorite

    • @TheGirmanator
      @TheGirmanator 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I agree. I felt the children’s dialogue in the show was often too rapid and breathless to feel anything for them. Whereas the movie had those slower moments like the “sanctuary” scene in Olaf’s attic or the payoff of the “Letter that Never Came” when they revisit the mansion.
And then there’s Thomas Newman’s score. Perfectly captures that melancholic tone in the film.

  • @Chill1332

I've heard so many people criticize these stories for the way the adults don't listen or the way the narration explains things. But it's not a flaw. It is an stylistic choice. It's a parody of the way children feel. It is an intentional exaggeration, a parody of the way people don't listen or talk down to children (who are our protagonists) . It's SUPPOSED to make you feel frustrated and talked down to. Remember, this is a stylized world. It's not supposed to be realistic in tone, story, or characterization.

This follows the same animation and treatment as "The Polar Express" (2004), where Tom Hanks plays six characters.

I think you are the first and only reactor to have done it. But I think this is the key for getting new subscribers. All the popular great movies have been done to death. So that leaves all the unpopular great movies to react to. Movies that Patreon voters never vote for but are major draws to subscribers because no one ever does them. It worked on me anyway.

AND one FINAL thing (I swear): Charlotte may enjoy the books once she gets to be around 10, as something to read to her like I did with my son.
They do a great job showing the bad, finding the good, and getting through it. Some great moral lessons, lessons abiut understanding and life, while still being silly at times.
There are 13 in all (I think) and are quick reads.
This movie covers about 3 of those books pretty well (gets all the main points and stories across) so needless to say there is a LOT more going on to enjoy.

When it comes to “milking” snakes, that pertains to agitating a venomous snake (or spider) to veeeery carefully collect their venom. Which Petunia is clearly not venomous, based on her head shape. She’s most likely a corn snake. No getting venom out of her. 😂 So Monty was absolutely testing Olaf and caught him red-handed.

So even though its out of order from the book
I think this was a magnificent movie adaption. The soundtrack is still to this day one of my very favorites, and the style/visuals are so well done and fit so well with how the books were. I used to watch this over and over as a kid. Used to quote things from count olaf to make my little cousins laugh (Like the zoom in eye bit).
All that being said you def should check out the series that Neil Patrick Harris stared in (as olaf!!) and directed. Its one of the best and most faithful to the original that I've ever seen from a show. Theres a ton of parts that are direct lines from the book. Its a different vibe than this, but it actually does the whole series and does it justice. I just wish they wouldve gotten Thomas Newman to do the soundtrack again lmao but thats just imo.

Hey Justin, I have to agree with you. Jim Carrey's performance was not very good in this movie. One of the worst scenes is when he mimics Violet's tone after she said, " But the sun's still up." It means that he doesn't care that the sun is up as he orders them to go to bed. I was worried that he was going to tell Klaus to shut up because he was trying to make a point that Violet wasn't making it up, She was telling him the truth. But Count Olaf refuses to accept it and orders them to go to bed. Then he got very upset with them for making pasta puttanesca for dinner. He puts them to their room as he tells them that he was very disappointed for not making him dinner correctly. Can you tell me about the scenes? Thanks for your time! From, Chris.
