- Capitalism strikes again! Lord knows those shareholders need it!
I'm out here coping hard for Silksong. I will be extremely happy when it finally is released. Until then, I will continue to dump hours in Baldur's Gate 3.

Looks like John Riccitello, the CEO at Unity, is stepping down and several of the changes are being rolled back. Unity is still in hot water with a lot of devs but I'm sure they will start trying to repair their reputation.
The whole thing was massively blown out of proportion, but fuck John Donatello, good riddance.
Unity : There is no easter bunny , there is no tooth fairy . And there is no Hollow Knight SilkSong .
There never was
Half life 3: hey, I seen this before!
@@The_whales I also play Half Life lol

As a hollow knight fan, I agree
Unity does not realize that its main problem is that its competition is winning.
Adding this extra fee is just more reason for new devs to choose unreal and for everyone already using unity to start planning their move.
Unity later on: where money
It's so obviously stupid and short sighted on their part, that I kinda have to wonder if this is some insider trading, short sell shenanigans. We already know the CEO sold 2000 of his shares in the company right before this nonsense was made public.
or, they can use godot
Ah ah ah more people are actually switching to Godot
@@Mark6O9 noice
I find it funny how they think they’ll make a profit from this when in reality their just nuking themselves for absolutely no reason and bringing the developers with them. I feel soo bad for Team Cherry…
Hahahaha, they know it will fail, that’s why the CEO gave himself a big bonus and sold his shares.
@@yakobsoulstorm5187it's obvious why he isn't being arrested for insider trading.
@@yakobsoulstorm5187It was like 8.000 out of half a million, i genuenly think they were just that stupid.
They're like they are, just fyi
@@fireboythestar3455nah, it's true that the CEO sold a little but if you check other board members, they sold a lot, some sold it to the bottom. I think it's their strategy to deflect the claim that they are insider trading, by letting the most hated forefront guy the CEO (ex EA CEO) to sold only the little, while the rest sold like flood.
So when silksong will come out
Unity : never!!!
This is what happens when you let an EA CEO run your business.
*an ex-EA CEO who was ousted from EA for being "too greedy"
@@ShadowEclipse777it takes real skill to even make EA stop and tell you to take it easy....
Honestly, Team Cherry is probably one of the teams i'm less worried about. I'm most worried for the smaller devs who absolutely can't afford to pay for a project that they released years ago. Additionally there's also GalaxyTrail, they people who made Freedom Planet. Freedom Planet 2 is already a game thay flew under everyone's radar despite it having a bunch of hype and people loving the first game. This would be the final nail in the coffin for them if this goes through.
Apparently Unity took 99 steps back and waived this fee from the smaller devs while limiting it to 2.5% of revenue of bigger devs, while also making it optional and self-reported. Also got rid of the "Made with Unity" splash screen as -an attempt at hiding from people that the game they bought was made in a product owned by scumbags- a concession.
Not that it will help at all with the trust they just threw out of the window, of course, but at least devs who were already making their games are out of hot water.
@@FiksIIanzO That's good to hear. But here's the thing: if Unity wanted to monetize their engine, they should have just copied Epic Games and what they did for the Unreal Engine. 5% of revenue if your project makes over 1 million. And that for individual projects as well. So if you have 12 projects that don't break 1 mil, you don't owe them anything.
@@darienb1127 I completely agree and I'm not saying that what Unity did wasn't mind bogglingly dumb. I'm just saying that for now Silksong is safe-ish
@@FiksIIanzO No, i belive you. Also's it's not Silksong I was worried about (I don't even really like Hollow Knight), it was the smaller devs who absolutely couldn't afford itm
@@darienb1127 legally speaking I don’t think they could have retroactively charged game devs.
I’m not sure how future installs of grandfather games would work but they couldn’t charge them for installs prior to the new policy.
Imagine you spend years constructing and perfecting one of the most hyped indie games, just for you to have to start from scratch on some engine that you didn't even know existed
Honestly I thought Silksong would be out before I ever saw a glimmer of Pikmin 4, let alone 100% it.
Unity said “hey so Battlebit is doing really well and Silksong is coming… we want some of that”
Not even the shareholders would want what Unity did since it pretty much guaranteed the company is going to crash and burn.
Hollow knight be losing there mind over a delay, and I'm just mad they want to hurt little old Bug Fables
Their* instead of they're, just fyi
Bug Fables is a unity game?
Darn, that's been on my backlog for a while I was gonna play it next after finishing Cassette Beast too
Hopefully Moonsprout won’t have much trouble switching to Godot
THANK YOU My thoughts exactly, gonna hold onto my install for dear life, or we can just pirate it if anything should happen, we already have bought it after all
They aren't near the threshold, it's fine (unless they release like an update that'll cause people to download it a bunch again, but that probably won't happen)
You're kidding me... you're actually joking... Hollow Knight was made in Unity!?
It seems somewhat popular with games that present themselves as 2D like _Hollow Knight_ and _Terraria_ or 2D with an appreciable depth like _Enter the Gungeon_ or _Cult of the Lamb._ From what I understand, these games just align the camera and parade 2D assets in what is actually 3D space, which allows the developers to use already extant tools and technologies instead of making specialized 2D stuff and have nice soft lighting without hassle.
@@beingsactualmake the illusion of depth really easy to make too
@@kaselord1566 Yeah, on double check, my bad.
At least it still works as an example of a fully 2D game.
Unity is the world's leading game engine, it would make sense that plenty of games are made on it
@@beingsactualwait wasnt cotl made on unreal engine?
I love that this movie sense has become a meme.
I mean, you can't kill what is dead already.

OOOhhh, that's gotta hurt
If anyone's curious, this is from a tom and jerry movie lol
I know cause I watched it a lot as a kid
Yeah, I know that movie.
the one where they talk and become friends, right?
At this point, we should just boycott unity. This sucks so much.
i find it extremely unlikely they will even implement that, the insane backlash from the gaming community is enough to make any reasonable sane human being change their mind
Too bad they're not any of those things
Poor Hornet. She can't step outside without someone trying to assassinate her.
The only good thing to come out of unity.
everyone go to unitys open letter and tell them how you feel . they won't let any comments people post stay up for long ive been testing it even with stuff like "this is not an apology"just gets taken down
Unity Ceo its the judas son
Is it possible to translate data from one game engine to another?
im no developer yet, but i think its partially possible; though you would have to check that everything will run correctly and probably end up rewriting a chunk of the code anyways
Oh Laa Dee Dah I Got a good enouhg video card for BG3! While the rest of us playing NeverWinter Nights!
More like for no money because nobody is gonna be using Unity after that or would hack the engine so they don't have to pay for using it.
Hahahahahaha… AHAHAHAHAHA

Haha
I’m wondering how the Tom and jerry movie blew up 😂
I’m sure Xbox and Nintendo will absolutely not stand for unity fucking over game devs, not because they’re good companies with good ethics, but because it causes them to lose money. One of the few situations where corporate power is a good thing
wasn't pokemon GO and other nintendo games made on Unity?
No more Baldur's Gate 3 It's degenerate
what happened, i dont get it

If Silksong gets cancelled bc of this, I’m pulling the trigger on myself
If that's all it takes, you have no love for yourself OR metroidvanias in general. Sad part is, alot of people feel what you feel and are getting ready to do the same
This is still so awful, either they release it by the end of the year or its dead.
there is no team fortress 3, there is no counterstrike 3, there is no titanfall 3, and there is no hollowknight silksong.
yes I know someone else did this comment
It's more commercialism.
Get to cover! The market is efficiently allocating resources again!
Reminder that the people responsible for this decision have names and addresses
They're just going to use the Unity situation as an excuse to not release the "definitely real" expansion. If I was more cynical I'd even suggest they had a hand in the Unity change...
godot is better
deserved
"Capitalism strikes again!" No, this is very obviously a human greed problem. What did we expect from the EA ceo?
Capitalism promotes and incentivizes human greed. It sounds like you really need to actually study Capitalism and its alternatives.
No it didn't though! Lol silk song was already in trouble before this unity thing. Someone explain how this unity fee affects a game that hasn't even come out yet and therefore does not have to pay this fee until after a year of release! Sounds to me like there are internal struggles at the studio and this unity fee thing is a nice scape goat!
As I understand, it’s not the fee on Silksong, it’s the fee on the original Hollow Knight. They can’t put as much money into the game if all the funding goes into paying every time that their incredibly popular game gets installed
Add on that if they ever get Silksong up and running, that’s two very popular games they gotta pay for now.
Well again, the original hollow knight will not affect them until a year after next. If hollow knight is finished making them money then they have nothing to worry about. But for arguments sake let's say they do have to pay a monthly fee, as of late on record have sold over 2.5 million copies and have made well over 85 million dollars. Of recently within the last month it looks like they sold 60k copies! So they'd for that month be paying on January 2025, $12,000 and let's say they keep that consistent... They'd be paying $144,000 for the year compared to their 85+ million in sales. This is definitely being blown way out of proportion because by comparison if they were under unreal, they'd be paying a 5% royalties fee for each sold copy. For that same year with the same sales numbers as above, they'd be paying $1,080,000 a year to unreal! And as well this unity calculation is based off of then using the basic unity which they are likely using the higher tier meaning they'd actually be paying less than .20 cents per sale! Remember what unity was trying to charge was a maximum of .20 cents per sale meaning you are paying a fixed rate rather than a percentage from your actual sales figures.
What are you even going off on? Internal struggles?
You don't need Unity for simple 2D game
Having your game cost $0.20 less isn’t going to financially destroy you.
It's not per purchase, it's per instal.
@@NarwhalEntertainment after you’ve gained a certain amount of money, after you’ve gained a certain amount of installs.
@@Limbambo what amount?
Lets say this game solds 5M copies for 15$ each, its 75.000.000$ revenue, Unity will take the Pro licenses, as always, and 625.000$ (0,8333333333%) in install-fees. The end of industry for sure...
I edit, lets do the math with Unreal engine:
They take 5% for revenue above 1M$. So 5% of 74M$ = 3.700.000$. Unity 625.000$, Unreal 3.700.000$. Still people love Unreal and hate Unity for the prices...
the fee is per install, not per purchase
No shot there's ppl out there defending this shady stuff.
@@toolatefortowerfall People who installs the game will be clients, even if the installs are 5x more than people who bought it (doupt it), its still cheaper than Unreal...
So if Silksong sells 5M copies and its installed 25M legit times ITS STILL CHEAPER THAN UNREAL.
In a vacuum, sure. Keep in mind there's regional pricing for lower income economies. And even if it's lower at face value, it's the principle of not letting this shit be standardized or accepted. Game devs are voting with their wallets.
@@GiovanniTolari The installation-fee only applies for installs from rich countries... Read the math again (In my example I supposed all the installs are from those rich countries).
Steam gets 30% and you all suck his dick.
Unreal its 5% and you all suck his dick.
Unity increases their incredibly low prices by 0.83% (in the worst scenario as mine) only in millonarie games that make more than 1M$/y and its the devil.
