Fun fact (at least, according to Herodotus): when Sparta and Argos agreed to settle their feud at the Battle of Champions, with 300 per side, the only survivors were 2 Argives and 1 Spartan.
The two Argives believed they were the only survivors and thus the victors, so they returned to Argos. Unbeknownst to them, one of the Spartans was not dead, only badly wounded. When he eventually stood up, he found himself the last man standing, and so claimed victory for Sparta.

Who beated thousands of samurais while outnumbered.
Ended with the Templars forever and basically with european army of those times because of their modern strategies and tactics.
They defeated dozens of thousands of british in the Battle of Cartagena.
After days of mortar strikes only few hundred starving Spanish left, with a couple of guns.
But even having to face dozens of thousands of enemies they fighted they, ending with the suicidal assault that will lead to the end of the British rule in America.
The Spanish troops charged to a certain death with the scream "CHARGE! MURDER THE HERETICS!" the spanish people charged and ended with the british, forcing them to retreat to the beach where later other thousands of they will die for sickness and open wounds.
Horatio Nelson (the greatest general and admiral of the Royal Navy and British Army) was leading the British who retreated.
He sent a letter to Blas de Lezo (Spanish General and Admiral) telling him they will return after recover in jamaica.
Blas de Lezo only told him "if you want to return you better come with a bigger navy, because this one only works to move coal from Ireland to London".
They never teturned and the imperial ambitions of the British broke into pieces.
The british will not take any other colony in America or Africa until the Spanish Empire was dissolved.
(Because Spain also kicked them from Aftica too, in the battles of Canarias, where Spanish Farmers with some rifles and Natives from th islands united against a large amount of british troops and made the british lose every battle, even if they had bigger numbers, nowadays there is statues in those islands to represent the union of the Spanish Farmers and the Natives to fight the British while outnumbered, and how they won.)

When the messenger of the persian empire asked them to surrender they threw him out cuz that was an insult to them. Spartians had a said. Either return with your shield high or return on your shield. Meaning either return with victory or return dead. Otherwise don't return at all.
