  • Ever had your kitbashes shatter to pieces after you dropped them? This will never happen to you again after watching this video!
Pinning your models was very common when everything was made of Metal. The weight of the metal and the brittleness of the superglue caused many models to shatter after falling over (just ask any Oldhammer about Abaddon's arms. He was also known as Abaddoff). Now that GW has moved over to plastic and resin only, pinning is still a very useful technique especially when kitbashing various materials together. Combining plastic with resin, greenstuff and things like wood will only work with superglue, which makes you run into the same problem as with the old metal models. All my models have at least one point where I pin them, if only to attach them to the base. So let's get to pinning!

I wish I knew this stuff when I was a kid. Poor commander Dante lost his power axe nearly a dozen times.

I've been there too! My dreadnought lascannon would always droop after a few battles before I got taught in the arts of pinning XD

I've started using superglue with baking soda as an accelerator for metal models. It's a lot stronger than superglue on its own and isn't brittle like Zip Kicker and other chemical accelerators. It's strong enough you can even sand it and file it down. The other benefit is for pinning. You put baking soda in the hole and super glue on the metal rod. Then, when you join the two parts together, the pin pushes the glue into the baking soda and forms a bond from the inside out.
I have never seen the sharp pin for making an indent before drilling. It's so fucking simple and obvious, but I've never heard of someone doing that in the 20ish years I've been into miniatures lmao 😭😂

That's a good tip too! I recently learned bout the baking soda (from an Adam Savage @tested video), never heard of that one before. But combining it with pinning is an interesting idea! And the indent for drilling saved me so much hassle once I figured that one out. Another tip was to add a drop of paint to the tip and make that put the mark, but I haven't discovered the need for that additional step just yet.

I got started with WarmaHordes and learning to pin Jacks together, but the thin limbs or replacing spear shafts was the real ordeal. Kitbashing and customizing isnt nearly as nice but I have to say I love the weight and feel playing with them. Part of me like that the gluing isnt a permanent bond so i can always undo anything and a dunk in acetone if i want to repaint. I got the MTO metal Archaon and I'd be lying if i said I wasnt procrastinating putting him together.

yeah there are definitely some upsides to the metal, and I still have a special place for them in my heart :) But kitbashing with metal is just something I'm quite happy we've moved beyond by now. My fingers thank me every day
