Thanks! And I agree, I definitely like too see that stuff too and wish more people showed it. That and the fact that my running joke that if I cut out the mistakes from my videos they would be 90 seconds long, is 100% accurate 😄
@@LarsStrandenArtI have seen so many projects that I have zero confidence to tackle, but showing it this way and showing you fixing your mistakes, gives me a little more confidence that it will probably end up presentable even if I leave some mistakes in there. Well done!
I'm no expert with resin, but from what I saw other people doing, you could pour a layer of resin, let it dry, and the paint onto it. Then next layer, paint, and so on. This creates a very good 3D effect. Maybe this helps you when you're doing a similar project, and you don't have to try to swirl gloopy resin into gloopy resin 😀.
People are so quick to post their successes and hide their struggles in making it to the successes. It creates this environment of "everyone achieves everything first time, and it's always perfect" that puts newer crafters off. Your attitude to your "whoops" moments is wonderful, and more inspiring than perfectionism.
That was quite the journey. I think the air bubbles add to the scene (I mean the guy is floating in a swamp which emits all kinds of gasses). I'd have expected the inner skull to be more visible with the light on. Any ideas how to improve its visibility if you were to do another project like this? I like the end result. (Also: mario world and zelda, loved those)
Thanks! :) Hmm yeah I was wondering about that during the project when I saw how little it did show. Not totally sure to be honest, maybe more aggressive and precise blocking of the light / where the light is let through the skull would help, or maybe a less transparent skull, but not convinced it would make that much difference tbh. Let me know if you think of anything 😄
@@LarsStrandenArt Things that came to mind were to use a small piece and do a few tests with the material first (like model a few simple teeth and incrementally paint those and see which stand out best). Or give the inner skull its own internal light source (less intense, slightly different color), maybe? Either way looking forward to your next project :)
Yep thats probably the way to do it :) I’ll try to remember that if I ever decide to subject myself to making another glowing skull inside a face project 😅 Thanks!
I would try doing the skull in a transparent black? Maybe highlighted with white that way when the light shines through it’ll be more visible. Try doing different tests with smaller amounts of silicone and resin.
The air-bubbles just add texture. Also, the corpse is probably still decaying (albeit - insert lore accurate number of millennia here - at a veeeeery slow pace). Accordingly, it would still give of bubbles over time.
Thanks! Haha yeah the sad part is I actually have two cans of spray on mold release right here, not sure if I was afraid it would inhibit the resin cure (which I'm pretty sure it wouldn't) or if I just plain forgot. Wow, your work is absolutely fantastic! Your sculpting skills are truly exceptional. I really enjoy your sense of humor, and your honesty makes your content so relatable. I really hope this video brings in the views your channel deserves. Normally, air bubbles in dioramas aren't great, but in this case, they actually work in your favor. Since the elf is underwater, the tiny bubbles add to the overall aesthetic. Consider getting a cheap hairdryer from a thrift store. It can help you get rid of any unwanted air bubbles and prevent the resin from drying too quickly. Just be careful, as the resin can still heat up and produce some smoke. Keep up the amazing work!
thank you for the kind words, much appreciated! :) And thanks for the resin tips, I'm keeping notes of all the great advice I'm getting! Can't bet on making things that somehow luckily looks better _with_ bubbles forever 😄

Worth the wait! Instead of going with vacuuming (in the future perhaps), maybe look into curing the resin under high pressure (using a pressure pot thingy ppl cook in)? It absolutely works to remove air bubbles, with the benefit of not causing stuff to bubble/foam up. Peter Brown here on YT does that and works a *lot* with resin, might be worth looking into?
Thanks! Ah yeah thats a great idea, I briefly looked into pressure pots a few years back (was considering casting really small things like keycaps for a bit there) but then kinda forgot about them. I’ll check out Peters channel, thanks for the recommendation! :)

I completely agree: " Epoxy resin hates us all!". Every time I thought I'd solved the last problem, a new one popped up. Love your diorama. Love LOTR too (the books & the films!) Btw. Most epoxy mixes don't have to cure completely before adding a next layer. I used a slow curing one ( 7 days), adding the next layers every next day .
When putting in the transparent skull, you need a thicker opaque layer around the details and dark spots. Because the light gets diffused by the skull and silicone, these dark spots will not be as dark as when they are painted but appear more like shadows that introduce the shape of the details you want to see more of.
I loved watching the bonding process between you and the elf boy. I think here the bubbles actually added to the illusion of decomposing body and the deep green imo wasn't way off. You could try printing a monochrome picture of the elf boy on a sheet of plastic and place it over the LED screen to block more light on the right places but all and all this was beautifully executed and I really appreciated you using the secret ingredient Amazon used while making the Rings of Power at 10:23. Granted that in that project it was added to the writing crew's juice boxes.

cool video. a few improving tips: the skull should have been more opaque, and the face less opaque so you can see the skull through the face. maybe one LED inside the skull would have helped. a layer of acrylic on the bottom of the box mould and THEN laying the model in there would have saved you a lot of hassle from removing the mold. make the mold a bit bigger and spray some separator on the acrylic sides. even rubbing some solid soap over should work. your mold will basically pop open without having to chisel it out.
Fantastic idea with fantastic execution! I lied the little bubbles and imperfections as they are murky dirty swamps so that adds to it really, beautiful face sculpt as well!
