you should def listen to alec benjamin
JUST FOR THIS VIDEO i didnt want to say- “this person sucks therefore this song sucks.” because that’s not very fun and i wanted to have the song presented as it is without blind prior judgement. that would be judging the person and not the actual music, and that *wasnt the goal of the video.* explaining here because im getting the same comment a lot. i dont care what you do in your personal life if you separate the artist from the art or not. i usually cant separate the art from artist like most people here. but FOR THIS VIDEO i looked at just the art

Thank you for talking about my song !!!
I agree with Grapes with the vocals being a bit lacklustre in comparison to the instrumental. I'm still working on my range etc. so when writing that song I had to pick an annoying key to make sure my vocal would fit in naturally for when we perform it live. It meant that the chorus and outro lacks OOMPH vocally. The gang vocal helped but yeah! Really appreciate it.

As a career musician I can safely say you don't have to separate art from artist as much as people think, especially when it comes to meaning and intent in artistic expression. Techniques and the like are fair game, but even they're a product of one's inner thoughts
totally fair!! just FOR THIS VIDEO i didnt want to say- “this person sucks therefore this song sucks.” because that’s not very fun and i wanted to have the song presented as it is without blind prior judgement. that would be judging the person and not the actual music, and that wasnt the goal of the video. explaining here because im getting the same comment a lot
🙏
As someone that's not a career musician, I agree with that honesty
I work in film and completely agree. We all bring our own biases and ideas to our work, and each person can do what they do with vastly different intent. These biases and ideas influence intent, and I think you should be able to examine the intentions of the artist just as much as the art itself.
@@theKaraProject i think you're either missing or overthinking the point here
Alec Benjamin is actually an amazing artist! His music style is very unique, and songs like "If We Have Each Other" are very weell-written and tell stories.
If we have eachother deserves a grammy. It's very inspiring and perfectly written. A lot of storytelling in such a short time and it also sounds amazing.
One wrong turn from his new album blows me away every single time I listen to it. The set up to the bridge was done perfectly and I gasped when I first heard it.
I went to see Alec live recently and it was amazing. He is such an amazing artist. In my opinion: He has ( one of ) the best lyrics in Today's music industry.
Boy in a Bubble is one of my all time favorite songs. And Must Have Been the Wind gets me hard
Yeah I love his music too, i felt little sad when Gabbie doesn't knw him

i think it is important to separate the art from the artist if you’re giving an opinion or trying to criticize art but a lot of the time i hear this saying when it comes to me not listening or watching certain creators purely for entertainment. for me, i just genuinely can’t put a bad person’s song in my playlist because the entire time it’s playing i’m just thinking about what they’ve done and their drama. and then there’s also not wanting to support the individual by giving them constant views. even though i do think it’s important to separate art from artist in some occasions, it’s important to keep in mind the person you’re giving views and money too.
Yeah i agree with your point, its more about if the problematic artist themself will still get benefits which could be bad if they donate to problematic orgs as well.
Agreed. I don't know how to feel about say, ppl saying Trump is ugly. I watched another video by this youtuber where she made fun of a stand-up comedian and just felt like it was sad. Maybe not completely in bad taste, but... Idk. Criticizing stuff is fine. But I refuse to put a person down if they're not all there, or a product of boomer culture. Some ppl might like it, and I'm not gonna shame them for it. I can say my opinion, but not haze or spit on them. I don't remember the video she did on stand-up comedians that well but the first guy in the vid felt like she was making fun of the weird awkward kid in school, who might be undiagnosed with ASD. It would have been way more different if she made fun of a privileged, popular, asshole comedian or person. Which is why it's easier for me to make fun of that make-up guy rather than Shane Dawson.
I know the majority hates him and looks at him as justifiably cancelled, but that's my current view. I suck at comparisons so feel free to try another. Tl;dr:
I prefer ppl making fun of privileged ppl like how Carlin did, instead of how Bill Burr or whoever makes fun of minorities etc.
Yes, because at some point your level of interaction w this person's art isn't going to be so different from the artists other supporters that DO enable their behaviour. You're still pushing this person's career forward.
@@Venomonomonom How is Shane Dawson not privileged?
@@Venomonomonom If you're in the 6-figure range like Jim Breuer--the "comedian" you're referring to in her other video--you're privileged. And given how disabled he made people seem for getting something as mundane as a vaccination? the gabbie hanna comment of her needing a creative in the room is EXACTLY how i feel about her stuff omg !!!! it's like if she could just chill for a second and accept that some ppl are just better than you at some things, even when it comes to your own ideas, she could build a team and be a rly good artist but it seems like she can't get past the idea of other peoples hands in her projects
My problem with separating someone problematic or horrible from the media they create is you literally can't separate art from its artist in many cases specifically *because* their art is how they make a living. If buying an album means that person can use that money to abuse people or commit crime, I'd rather not be a part of that.
For me, I'll consume that kind of art when it won't give them money. So like watching an AMV instead of the official music video, or watch a DVD I already have instead of streaming it. Generally stuff becomes fair game once they're dead (as long as their descendants aren't also terrible).
A benefit of ditching artists who suck is there are plenty of lesser known or less popular people we could follow instead, instead of allowing shitty people to keep power. IMO there's plenty of artists out there with similar/better music who don't hurt people.
I also feel dirty when consuming because a lot of artists write about personal experiences so it’s like they’re trying to justify their shitty behavior
Very well said. Art is an extension of oneself, making it impossible to separate the two.
or when the art is one of the reasons why the artist is hated. for example, picasso. He was an abusive asshole and he painted his victims. His crimes leaked through to his art so you can't separate the art from the artist
exactly! libraries are a great way to read books without supporting the author directly
If someone is problematic enough not to deserve your support monetarily or physically, they're not doing anything to enhance your life.
You pulling out that DVD for you and friends to watch could mean they get that support from your friends.
You illegally downloading things--because it remains illegal even after they're dead--tells hosts who you want, meaning someone has to go to the show/buy the thing/whatever to get it which feeds into the metrics of the popularity someone has and guarantees their next payment. The skyrocketing cost of entertainment has less to do with IP longevity and more to do with covering for widescale piracy--like how fashion designers have to get paid up-front because they don't make direct money off of piracy, but even the level of piracy is a metric that gets tracked for a lot of these artists anymore.
yeah i think dream suffers from “first song” syndrome, because his two other collaborations were honestly good, while mask got so much hate and got memed on so hard he had to delete the video.
i just think he needs more practice and finding what his sound is if he wants to make more music, cause his voice is nice
road trip had a catchy chorus and a good instrumental and that's kinda it, and even in the chorus his voice was as flat as it was in the rest of the song, and yeah I mean mask is just not a good song.
I hadn't heard the alec benjamin collab until now but from what I heard in this video his voice sounded a lot better than his other two songs aside from that part where he went a little too hard into that indie accent. he definitely has potential, I've seen that since road trip, but he's still not quite there yet.
(ps road trip was his first song, not mask, I don't know why they said mask was his first song)
@@speepealette2218 still though, mans is new the songwriting and i still like road trip nonetheless. it’s just a thing where i kinda feel sorry for him that he started trying songwriting with such a big platform already instead of working his way up his the music because the whole world watched him flop and it was a yikes

I think a few commenters missed the point a bit. The reality is that some really terrible people also happen to be talented musicians. Does that mean I’m going to give them plays and buy their music? Definitely not. If I found out that one of my favorite artists did something that did not align with my morals, I would stop listening. But I think the point of the video was to solely judge the artist’s talent.
yeah people are commenting about separating art and artist when it comes to actively supporting their art. this video is about critiquing the quality of the music.
Gabbi blew me away with that not not gonna lie. Her dance is cringe as fuck but she sounded good honestly

Yeah. I feel like it's really a case-by-case basis. Like if someone's an abuser vs just being kind of cringy

this is truly a collab i didn’t know i needed but i would never have wanted anything else
God I love listening to music people talk about music. Takes me back to being a band kid in high school when I used to listen to some of my musically inclined friends talk theory. I love music but I’m actually just genuinely bad at it, so the best I can do is watch people who are good at it do their thing. Fills my heart with joy!
This might be an unpopular opinion but I don’t think art should be separated from the artist. The art is is the artist usually, not in every case, like Disney stars who are contracted to sing and stuff like that, but like people like Gabbie Hannah. They’re art is still connected to someone who’s done or is doing bad things and refuse to take accountability for it. It’s hard to like a song when I know the person who sang it is racist or homophobic or just a bad person, because I know that the person singing the song Hayes people like me then. That’s just my thoughts, sorry for the paragraph
also there is no truly impartial creation of art. someone's views or beliefs are always going to filter into their work in some way or another
I think both things can be analyzed separately, but it shouldn’t be used as an excuse. Like if someone is supporting a creator for their art but they’re racist/homophobic/transphobic/sexist/ableist/etc, then you can’t just say you’re departing art from artist. However analysis of art by bad people can be very useful such as with classic books, a particular song that may be significant to someone, etc. I appreciate what you said, though. People don’t think hard enough and use excuses to enjoy things without being critical
Bro, agreed. I can't support someone who's morally messed up. I may like your music but once I find out the type of person you are we're done here
but then every person from classic rock was pretty much a bad person too and no one blinks an eye there.
But then… when you like a random song, do you research everything about the person who made it? Do you keep this same energy with every random song you hear?
Sounds exhausting
Honestly, I'm so scared nowadays of clicking on any videos involving dream's music. No one is pretending it's perfect, but it's really disheartening seeing him get bullied for his first attempts. I'm so happy with how you both approached this

For objectivity's sake, separating art from the artist is great which is what y'all did. Though I'm sure for most, they're thinking in terms of consuming the art for entertainment/pleasure like how we watch youtube videos or play songs on repeat during a car ride.
Exactly what I was thinking when reading a lot of these comments
i love how blunt HT is lol. also couldn't agree with yall more about these songs
maybe it was just me having an unhealthy obsession with the album in my teen years but all i can hear with that james marriott song is tourist history by two door cinema club
what if we didn't separate the art from the artist tho? what if we just move on and interact with other art with creators who haven't actively ruined others and could benefit from the support. In most cases I found the "art" mediocre or just not worth the energy of mentally willing the artist out of existence or pirating it just to consume it. I know media can hold special places but it's pretty easy to forget and find that same kind of joy or entertainment from other things over time and had the added benfit of broadening your taste and experience with consuming media. I mean you can separate gabby from that song all u want but... why? It sounds like anything else from the early 2000s pop punk wave and its not refreshing or new and the mv makes it almost unbearable to watch. Like why put in the effort and add it to ur playlist when u could just find a different song that has some more heart or meaning and has an artist u want to support instead of feel guilty about everytime u play it?
I feel like the whole separate the art thing is entirely a personal and subjective decision. It’s entirely based on how bad of a person you’re willing to support for what quality of art. I personally think this video is more geared towards separating the title “TH-camr” from the artist not so much bad deeds if that makes sense.
@@camgaa no that's literally not at all what this video is about. Nobody gives a shit about them having the title of TH-camr. Them being awful people and you not thinking about that when listening is what is meant by separating the artist
@@ItsTubeTime I think the only reason that art/artist should be separated are when 1. The supposed artist has very little creative freedom within the making of the piece, and just has their name on it because their name sells, or 2. The art has a cultural significance that should be noted. Kanye’s music, for example. Or John Lennon, or any number of old authors. Then you can analyze the art in terms of its significance to culture or society rather its subjective value. Or, and this has been happening more and more recently, you are completely aware of how shitty the artist is but consume the product without directly supporting them because you just need that right now. This one’s the most iffy, but for example, John Mulaney is the only comedian who can consistently make me laugh. Like, every joke lands for me every time. And sometimes I just need to be able to sit down and laugh for a while. I can understand the aspects of comfort and nostalgia that come along with some of these pieces of art, and the value the art has to a person entirely separate from their feelings about the artist.
I think you can typically separate the art from the artist in order to properly and “objectively” criticize and analyze the art. Especially because when a creator gets to a certain level of notoriety/infamy that some of these artists reach, others not within their sphere of influence often attribute qualities associated with them with popular opinion rather than personal experience, which for many (especially fans of those creators) may seem unfair.
So, for video reviews/critiques such as this, it’s I guess more practical for the sake of fairness to properly analyze just the music, because trying to tie the context of their morality to their art seems unreasonable (cause how would you go about doing that. How bad is Dream compared to Gabbie Hanna. From scale of cheating at video game and harassing random people to harassing specific people and defending SA. Where do specific people draw the line, and where do people who just don’t like a creator but wouldn’t cancel them go, they also shouldn’t separate music from artist even if the only reason to dislike the artist is simply disliking the type of non-music content they make, that being the sole reason to never give their music content a shot. I dunno I just guess people should receive equal and balanced criticism of their work, regardless of their controversy.)
Uh, I’m not going to stop listening to a song b/c someone said fag five years ago or did some creepy stuff as a teenager. That’s just unnecessarily affecting my life when it doesn’t have to… That being said, the video is literally about determining the quality of influencer music, so separating the art from the artist is only fair here… Idk it just sounds like you’re kinda making things black and white when that’s just not how the world works.
I’ve never really heard people talk about James’s music so I’m glad you guys did, I really like his songs (especially sleeping on trains).
as someone who makes music and film and stuff, i truly don’t think you can ever separate the art from the artist. everything i make has pieces of me, influences from my life, life experience, etc.

I don't think Gabbie will ever be able to get past her ego enough to make videos that aren't just her flailing around, or to work with anyone who tries to direct her sound.
strong intersection between people who don't take themselves seriously, and songs that are kinda actually good on this list!! the ppl who want their music to be legit, but are simultaneously willing to take criticism/don't think they're completely without flaw/aren't over-serious are the best :))

So glad Dev Lemons is on this list I love her music SO MUCH 🍋🍋🍋
I've enjoyed a few of her recent songs, she's really rocking it lately.
I think it’s interesting how willing we are to “separate the artist from the art”. People are biased and bring these biases to their work, so art is influenced by the artist’s mind. At the same time, people are multi-dimensional and capable of a wide breadth of actions. What I’m saying is, bad people can do good things and good people do bad things. That’s not to say that separating artist from the art is always the right thing to do either. Like much of life, it’s a grey area and very complex and usually depends on a case by case scenario.
I know that this video wasn’t really discussing this topic but y’all touched on it so my brain latched on. I will say, thanks for introducing me to some great new artists, I can’t wait to check out more of Marc Rebillet and Lia Marie Johnson.

I am such a big fan of Mark Rebillet it was exciting to see you guys talk about him. He is so good at singing. His spotify has some good songs
James Marriott is a legend. His music sounds like a mix of Japanese artist Eve (most often 'Dramaturgy' or 'Kaikai Kitan' vibes) and early 2010s pop songs but with a little British sprinkled in, and I'm here for it!
Goddamn, that Gabbi Hanna song is actually really good if you pretend the music video doesn't exist
Okay so when I saw Gabbi Hannah was going to be in this line up I was really expecting it to be awful like her previous song.. but Im not gonna lie the Paramore/icon for hire sound actually really works for her.
as a brazillian, thank you so much 🥹💖 the amazon and our indigenous people have been suffering so much lately, death and destruction doesn’t seem to stop and your support was such a welcome surprise, you made my day 💞
Omg confirmo dog hiiii
Marc is a genius - and masterful performer - and, you didn’t show it, but he has a phenomenal singing voice
I thoroughly enjoyed this video!
dropped a like especially for the jujutsu kasien sukuna reference
Honestly I thought these TH-camrs' music would be trash but I was honestly impressed, some even slapped!
i feel like Mark Ribbet is like the music version of automatic drawing or writing like it helps so many creatives make stuff they never would have thought of! goofing around-you can’t beat it :)
Gabi Hannahs song just feels like paramore 🧍
damn I actually love this video. ik sometimes commentary youtubers struggle w making videos ab things they have mostly positive feelings ab that still engage their audience (e.g. noel miller’s go kart vids), but this hits the nail on the head. idk if gabi has that issue, I haven’t been watching very long, but I just noticed I was grinning the whole time they were gassing up tmg’s stuff. I dig the good vibes a lot :)))
TMG (Cody and Noel) are the only TH-camrs that became musicians that I actually listen to and enjoy their music, I feel like they don't take themselves too seriously and their beats are epic.
HTHAZE is so cute. I watched him a lot last year but kind of stopped and haven't seen his content for a while now. But now I'm gonna check him out again because he definitely knows a lot about music.
If you didn't tell me that was gabby hannah... I never would have guessed that in a million years. I actually want to give that song a full listen to
Two of my favorite TH-camrs! Love the video!
Gabi thank you for the rubber soul representation in the back of all your videos. It is much needed
I feel like Marc is a musician who became a TH-camr as opposed to the other way around (funny enough, he blew up from his clips going around on Reddit, something he mentions when talking with Lyle).
You’d be surprised that there are TH-camrs who do have really good music. Ally Hills is one. Believe it or not Rebecca Black’s recent music is very good. Her song ‘Anyway’ is catchy as hell and she sounds amazing
I got to run sound for mark when he lived in dallas before he became big. Dude is a fucking legend, and is the nicest person you'll meet.
Dreams not a bad dude (i THINK istg sometimes i’m unsure) and his music isn’t awful. it’s not good. but it’s his raw emotions about his real life and feelings. and he’s not tryna be like… a very serious professional grammy award winning musician. he’s doing it FOR FUN for himself and to help others who feel the same as him.
Being a former avid Alec Benjamin listener, that beginning guitar piece is basically his whole thing and the song really emulates Dream’s improvement and the fact that sometimes help from others can really give that push that you need.
I was actually so interested in this video when I saw James on the thumbnail because I thoroughly enjoy him
edit: just to be clear him is the name of the song
The channel will hit at least 500 000 in about a year, mark my word.
You check all the boxes.
Your videos slaps
I love it
Damn, was hoping you would do Sleeping on Trains for James. That shit's certified banger.
Yeah, that's a cracking song. I don't really like his style of music much but even I like that one.
im so glad james was in this i enjoy his content and his music. i think he deserves recognition. i recommend watching his streams, if u want a discomfort streamer
16:00 wait that guys a TH-camr? I love that song (I’ve got it saved on my Apple Music)
i like how the title is roasting youtubers attempts at music yet theyre being incredibly nice and finding every way to compliment it
Just found your channel earlier today, good stuff :)
i mean i'm here for a goofy fun time but i also really appreciate the honest and yet respectful critiques of these songs :) i love james' music as well as tmg's and i think it's really cool to see the evolution of each of their progress throughout their years of making music. like i remember when broke bitch came out and everyone had a collective moment of "cody has finally found a really good, smooth, natural singing voice! :D" similarly, i think james has gotten more creative and bold with his music in the last few years and i really love seeing him progress like that :)
great video! i love seeing you talk about music
The first song from gab is played in Eb tuning, rather than E standard. I gotta say, respect for that low tuning
HI I found you from your collab with Annieamarie and I adore your content!!! I'm actually super out of touch with popular music in general so this was really cool to find all these new artists!!!
23:57 was great I danced along too haha
