    Funny story I test drove a work mates MG4 XPOWER, and I was completely blown away by the performance, it honestly looks like some Asian grandmothers daily grocery shopper cart, one look at it and you’d think it’s just another cheap run-off-the mill chinese MG car. I was being tailgated by a brash dude in a C63s AMG, he wanted to overtake me so he immediately changed to the lane besides mine and gunned it past and cut off the guy in front of him before we both reached the red traffic light, my work colleague who I’ve known for a few years now told me I want you to floor it at the lights and beat this guy, I was very hesitant at first because it’s not my car but he insisted, I put the car in its highest power mode to get the full beans, so as predicted the guy in the Merc floored it off the lights as did I, and I was surprised at how I left him for dead off the line with the sudden burst of electric power as he struggled for traction with his RWD setup, but he was right on my tail but wasn’t exactly gaining to get past me, we both reached the next set of traffic lights and he pulled he asked us if our car was modified and what sort of car it was, we told him it was stock as bone and it’s electric and it’s an MG, his face went from being all smug to complete humiliation, I could tell his ego was hurt bad knowing his 200k AMG was destroyed by a 60k MG, I know exactly how he felt because I’ve been on the opposite end of those a couple times myself.

      "looks like some Asian grandmothers daily grocery shopper cart" should have left it at that mate......yeah sure, I'd still take the AMG Merc any day....and these days you're only going to grid up at the traffic light drags next to an EV that will blow the silly little MG away......

    • @russell3436

      @@Mexxx65 mate I’d take the Merc too, but the performance of that little MG is like a rocketship, not many cars will beat it off the mark, how many cars can do 0-100 in 3.8 seconds for under 60k, you need to spend well over double if not triple the money to have that sort of performance, the Kia EV6 GT/Hyundai IONIQ 5 N is more my cup of tea that does the 0-100 sprint in the same time bracket but you need to fork out well over 110k for them and I’m not sure people will be willing to spend that sort of money on them.
      I prefer performance sedans over anything but you’ve got to give credit where credit is due, alot of the car brands that use to be laughing stocks only a few years ago are now catching up and changing the game, Hyundai and Kia are classic examples of this, there cars were seen as nothing more but a budget brand of cheap cars and now they’re a premium brand that compete with the Europeans in terms of looks, luxury as well as have a strong reputation in the performance division with their N divinsion and Kia’s GT cars respectively.
      It’s good to see MG pushing the boundaries too, it makes other manufacturers who have had it easy for far too long to push themselves and bring out better cars to compete in the market. MG was a joke and now it’s beating supercars such as classic Lamborghini’s and the first gen Nissan R35 GTR, just have a quick search on carwow.

      @@russell3436You are comparing apples to oranges. Electric acceleration is completely different. The Lamborghini and Nissan examples you gave along with the previously mentioned Merc AMG would offer better handling, breaking, driver enjoyment and styling. There's little to no point in comparing the two. Beware the build quality of the MG4. There is a reason the cost is lower than alternatives. The X Power isn't as expensive as some but it isn't exactly cheap and the standard MG4 has crept up in price whilst other manufacturers have dropped down a little to match it

      Well if it was that, it is still very weird because back-to-back runs produced different results, in random order, as shown in the video.
      Also, no other hybrid I've tested behaves like this; you can repeatedly run a Corolla hybrid for at least 5 or 6 tests with no noticeable difference in performance, potentially more; I usually only do around 5-6 back-to-back runs, trying the different drive modes etc.

    That reeks of it being underdone - I thought at first it was some sort of thermal protection cos of how you were driving it (which would be bad enough) but then it randomly comes good... A vehicle that suddenly loses power in an overtaking situation is downright dangerous. If they all behave like that they need to be recalled.

    Good review, I'm waiting for someone to do a good review of the software in the car, the various setting and how to set up car play and auto etc some of the setting are pretty meaning less as I've never heard of them and the manuals are terrible.

  • @waynehobbs5175
    @waynehobbs5175 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    The issue IMO is that the tiny electric drive battery is getting too depleted to put out enough energy to the electric motor.
    If that electric motor is say 70kW and its battery is 1.8kW the battery can only provide around 7.2kW (4C) + replenishment energy from the petrol engine. This is making the ICE engine split its power two ways. The motor and engine should produce 175kW but insufficient electrons will realistically concession that back.
    Also the electric drive battery will get hotter and reduce output by command of the BMS.
    Only driven gently to moderately can this combination endure.

    • @hojnikb
      @hojnikb 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I can assure you, that the tiny hybrid battery can output a lot more than 4C of current. That's a pretty normal peak drain rate for even the most capacity dense lithium batteries (which have really low C rate). That small hybrid battery i'll bet can deliver the full 100kW to the motor for a short time no problem. It's a high drain battery, which isn't that unusual for them to output 50C or more. It also makes absolutly ZERO sense for ICE to power the electric motor. First i doubt it even has two electric motors for that to even be possible (cant have generator and motor be at the same time) secondly, its more efficient for ICE to deliver its power directly to the wheels while accelarating, rather than powering the electric motor.
      But yes, the small 1.8kWh capacity is holding back the time you can drain it's power. Assuming you can get full capacity out of it, at 100kW that would mean around a minute before discharging. Account for the huge buffer such batteries have and gradual dropoff of discharge rate at lower SoC, it's not too unusual for the power to drop off after 10-20 seconds.
      The other issue here might be gearing as well. Depending on how the 3 speed tranny is connected to the engine and electric power, it might be that once it shifts into second or 3rd gear, the electric motor might lose it's rpm a lot and such can't deliver as much power.

    For a hybrid MG3 is far from cheap mate.
    There’s better alternatives for that money.

      @@rc70ys Yeah it’s not that cheap, but there aren’t many options anymore. Prices have jumped up across the industry. Not many options for $30k.

      I got Rio 1.25, which is truly not the road ripper, but there is no problem to achieve 6.0L / 100km in city traffic. Or 5.5L suburban...
      Agree it is better looking and god i fcking hate those retarded displays and retarded / dangerous GUI in MG. Praise the analog gauges and buttons for fan and AC control.
      I wonder if MG3 is even able to utilize that petrol saving potential. Haven't seen yet somebody trying that Eco mode long term. There shouldn't be much problem to squeeze it down to 4 Liters or even less. Most of tests are carried on like it is somekind of hot-hatch...which really isn't from far.
