    Only Yesturday deserved better, but overall I would agree with this list for the most part. Also, the Tale of the Princess Kaguya is a genuine masterpience and my favourite Ghibli movie. Glad to see it number 1! Great video!

    I respect your opinion and im happy you like those movies. My own personal favourite is Totoro because not only is it nostalgic(and honestly more memorable than the rest), but it also brings me back to simpler times when i was a kid and didn't have to think abut the future and taxes and other adult stuff and was just busy being... well, a kid. The dad in the movie was something i was always envious and jealous about because of the relationship between me and my own parents so I'm glad Satsuki and Mei got a good life with them. I would be honoured if my kids potential kids were as good them. And Catbus was my favourite lol.

      That's a great story! Totoro is a great movie no doubt, I saw it as a teenager, and again more recently, but my one regret is I didn't see it as a little kid because it really is just so wholesome. I would've watched it a million times, and yea Catbus is awesome and so are the suswatari. Love those little guys!

    Howl's Moving Castle is my favourite too. I don't agree that there are necessarily better. It rewards rewatches, it's stunningly beautiful as is the score and has a unique emotional throughline in the characters and in the confidence fluctuations that affect Sophie's curse. There is nothing quite like it.

    Honestly, I love Kiki's delivery service because of the bigger themes, delightfulness, and the overall character-driven plot with memorable assets. But I haven't watched a lot of these, like the Tale of the princess Kaguya or anything like that, but I was still pretty good with a lot of these. I respect your opinions, mainly for being just that- opinions.

      @@hassyverse I just watched some more movies like The Secret World of Arrietty, Porco Rosco, Ponyo, and a lot more (like howl's moving castle, and yes, I had watched movies before kiki's delivery service). I really enjoyed a lot of them! Out of all of them, I liked Arrietty, Ponyo, and Princess Mononoke the most, do you have any suggestions on any other Ghibli movies I should watch? Thanks for taking some time to leave a comment.
      Edit: Don't be mistaked, I still love Kiki's delivery service, I just think that I also really like those movies.

    While I agree with his Kaguya ranking, I think he missed the boat on saying that the film was meant for everybody. It's not really for kids because it's just too smart and mature for them.

    • @hassyverse
      @hassyverse  ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I’ve seen basically all of the really popular Ghibli movies this year… apart from Princess Kaguya which I’m saving for December
    I’d have to say that overall, I generally found myself preferring the deeper character movies over the high concept fantasy ones. Don’t get me wrong, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are masterpieces however my top 3 current favourite Ghibli films are Marnie, Kiki and especially Whisper of the Heart (which is one of my top 3 favourite movies of all time)

    This was fun to watch. I would've placed Porco Rosso somewhere in the top 5, though. It's not as spectacular and grandiose as many of the others, but throughout, it has this ever-present sadness that just gets me every time I see it. It's this weird mix of a vaguely told, modern fairy tale, set against the historical backdrop of fascism on-the-rise in southern Europe. Romantic, but not hopeful.

    • @hassyverse
      @hassyverse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea there are a lot of elements in Porco Rosso that are just not told well and I know Miyazaki at one time said he wanted to do a sequel for it, maybe that's the reason for the vagueness.

  • @JJFeelsRightIThink
    @JJFeelsRightIThink ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Princess Mononoke is way better than spirited away. I love spirited away but its way overrated when you have film's like Princess Mononoke. The music is better, the characters, the story, the message, the plot, the character motives, the character development. Literally everything is better than spirited away

    • @hassyverse
      @hassyverse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Princess Mononoke is fantastic, but is much more of a film for teens and adults than kids, which is why its not higher on this list!

    • @JJFeelsRightIThink
      @JJFeelsRightIThink ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@hassyverse So is Spirited away. I got scared trying to watch this as a kid and all my friends did also. the first time we fully watched it was when we were 12. And that is just more reason that Princess Mononoke is better because the message is deeper in so many ways. it can reach to young and older audiences and have completely different idea's of what the movie means to you.

    • @JJFeelsRightIThink
      @JJFeelsRightIThink ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hassyverse Another thing is, is that Ghibli proves 100% that animation is not just for kids. Ghibli always takes on a more serious topic even with Ponyo. It's about unconditional love, something a smaller kid wouldn't understand, just do.

    I appreciate your ranking so much, it's so great to hear someone talk about some of my favorite movies of all time. However there are some things I want to say. Mainly just that certain movies such as Only Yesterday and Totoro, aren't necessarily kid or adult movies. There isn't a boundary or age separation in these movies, it all feels like it can be understood by everyone. Only Yesterday in particular isn't an adult film, and it doesn't need to be. It's a film about life, work, and your past, you don't need to be in the exact age or position to feel what Taiko is feeling. Children can also reminisce and think about the roads that paved their present. That's it. Thank you for making this it was great to watch. Hey, I might even make a ranking some day who knows! :D

    Hayao Miyazaki has said multiple times for years that Nausicaa was the first Ghibli film. The official Ghibli website has the film. Both the Japanese and English dvd releases mark it as a Ghibli film. Wikipedia marks it as a Ghibli film. The officially released Ghibli artbook and history book both mark Nausicaa as their first release. YOU denying them their first film, tainting their image and their outreach and going against everything that has been discussed and approved for 40 years, is atrocious and shows that you have no honor, and no respect for Studio Ghibli or Miyazaki.

    1:37 Yeah because nepotism is _definitely_ an indicator of individual artistic merit. 🙄
    Goro is his own person dude, don't treat him or his art like an extention of his father, that's messed up.

    • @hassyverse

      I'm just pointing out the fact that Goro is Hayao's son and my reviews on all of his films are based on their own merit. All these Ghibli films are great unique pieces of art, but even you can't deny that some are better than others!

      @@hassyverse Don't get the wrong idea, I'm far from being partial to Goro's work myself, but your wording didn't exactly read like your sentiment was that in the vid with you saying some of his stories' inadequacies were surprising given what his father had accomplished. Because it shouldn't be surprising from that lens. Thanks for the response, though.

    I haven't watched yet but, Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko at 19th place? What? By far the most creative movie of the studio, and also one of the most passionates by far, the ost, the references, the creativity in how the tanukis are used are something nothing short of spectacular, and even the plot isn't bad, it has it's somber and cathartic moments of how powerless nature is against man, I wouldn't say it's the best, but definitely top 5 or top 7 for me
    But I still have to watch the video to formulate a proper opinion, but this already filled my skepticism

    • @leonardodelimaferreira8509
      @leonardodelimaferreira8509 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I've never disagreed more with a person's opinion before, I don't think I agree with even half of your tierlist, I mean, coquelicot above Kaze Tachinu? One of the worst and most useless romance plots above probably the most relaxing and impactful movie Miyazaki ever did?

    • @leonardodelimaferreira8509
      @leonardodelimaferreira8509 ปีที่แล้ว

      All things considered, I don't think your video is a sin or anything like that, but I wouldn't use this video as a basis for any type of recommendation for anyone that I know, mostly bc I have my own tierlist, 3 at that, a thing I definitely recommend, one for rewatchability, another one for impact and a third one being personal bias)overall experience, making it easier to judge for different criterias and not mixing and matching everything together and being unfair

    • @hassyverse
      @hassyverse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair enough, as I mentioned, if this helps anyone watch the studio in any form whether not to or to watch the ones I suggested is what really matters to me. Everyone has their own tastes, though my reasoning on why Poppy Hill is better than The Wind Rises is because of the appeal to kids. The animation in the Wind Rises is far superior, but its a biopic and is very serious in nature and while there are beautiful and imaginative moments, overall I think younger kids would be more bored watching this than Poppy Hill, after all Poppy Hill is more about the kids, so I just want to find a list that would appeal to everyone, kids and adults alike.

    • @leonardodelimaferreira8509
      @leonardodelimaferreira8509 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hassyverse fair enough but this is where the idea of having multiple tierlists could help your point better, Coquelicot has one of the most fun sequences in all of Ghibli, every single second in the old dorm house is a bless, but other than that, the movie has literally no substance whatsoever, and saying that it's better than Kaze Tachinu simply bc it's better for kids, is definitely not a point I would ever agree on, it's simply not fair, same to say that amongst cartoons, the one who's funnier is better than the one who tries to teach something, plus, you put Hotaru no Haka above all of those, and that movie is disgusting, no family ever is gonna enjoy that, and Kaguya Hime no Monogatari as number 1, that movie is not fun for kids, kids would never get the majestic of everything in it (plus it's literally just the tale of princess kaguya, it isn't fair to say it's better than Mononoke Hime for example when it is it's own original thing that has a way better told message than Kaguya)
