Thanks for the great video! I'm Japanese and I was one of them though it is pointless and boring until today. But this line from 11:02 ' I thought she'd never see his value ' (女なんぞにお前の良さは分かりゃせん) makes more sense because it literally says 'Women never understand how great you are'. It's not only RIkako but any women won't be able to understand well like me(Taku). I searched online but at last I couldn't find anyone see this film in the same perspective in Japanese. About understanding of LGBT, Japan is obviously far behind from western countries and some of my friends suffering from it. But your analysis would make a lot of people feels better because it IS the animated film from one of the most biggest studios as you said. Thanks for your great perspective and all the efforts making this once again. p.s Says after watched the preview of Ocean Waves, Hayao Miyazaki got really upset about it and made Whisper of the heart instead.(He doesn't like how they made it too)
makes sense, whisper of the heart is such a great film and also somewhat tackles the misunderstandings and issues about liking someone. it just doesn't have that gay-coded factor. but in this case that's good since the main couple actually makes sense (it's one of my favorite ghibli couples) and it's not a forced straight pairing.
@@wariofat He didn't like Ocean Waves and because it looked like full of blur over all, I guess. And he made Whisper of the Heart afterwards which is character's feelings and their relationships are more clearly described.
That's because he's really a sub bottom but neither he nor his authors has had time to realise that and come to terms with it. But really not all that uncommon.
@@noneofyourbeeswaxquinton My wife and I love our 'boring' existence. We don't argue, we don't fight, we don't swing, go out clubbing or cheat. We have a beautiful daughter and a son on the way. We have enjoyed this 'boring' life together for half of our lives... Seems like many would prefer an exciting, drama ridden romance. I'll take my happy, boring life with my family any day. I mean, we are moving to Japan soon (after this stupid COVID asshole goes away) so I guess it isn't super boring ^^
The thing with him liking the girl because Yutaka likes her, is something I've literally seen with a friend in Highschool before he realized he liked men. He was full bromance with his best friend but then went after the girl his friend liked, only to get her, mess up his friendship, dump her and years later come to a realization he loved Marco and not the girl. He never reconciled but his former friend was/is straight and he doesnt want to make things awkward by butting into his life now days.
it's the fact that the movie is called "ocean waves" and yet the only scene where a wave is present is when the two of them went to the pier. yep, that sealed it. this movie never really had rikako in the picture.
@@francescaalberici9950 lmao why are you so pressed about everyone else's opinion? That's how they interpret the movie so you don't have to copy then paste your statements down everybody's throats :/
"They were best friends, they thought about each other, left work early for each other, called the other for company just because they wanted to see each other, but also they're straight no homo btw see them standing 5 feet apart?"
Bruh this movie you can literally screenshot any scene and there’s a 90% chance that it’s the title screen for a lofi playlist. From Yutaka looking at Taku while he looks out the window in their school uniforms to Taku watching the train pass by even a scene of Rikako tiring her hair in a bun. Every scene from this movie can be used as an aesthetic.
@@Lilstiffsocks69 actually it's not about old or new art. Older anime art was very detailed in parts like hair, eyes and clothes, newer anime is simpler in those aspects (it depends on the art style of each anime tho). Studio Ghibli have always had this unique and simple art style because it's their style, not because of old or new. _(I know it's a very weird grammar but I'm actually a Spanish speaker)_

@@waterdrinker4033 i think because you are working in that field you might considere it is not always a good thing to allowed children to be self centered and selfish. They are like that by nature and enabling that instinctice behavior doesnt prepare them well to the world out there. They won't always be the little prince and princess of their world. Rikako has a very problematic behavior that wasnt corrected because of an obviously too permissive but also dismissive familly and it makes her miserable in all the movie. I see her as a cautionary tale about spoiled children that are let on the lose. They are not ready for the world and get frustrated and broken by it
"It really irritated me when I realized that Yutaka was interested in Rikako... Forget it...! She'll never see his real value." WOW that is some damningly gay dialogue

okay so as a mixed kid with a japanese mother, i watched this film when i was very young. when i was in primary school if i'm not wrong, and that was wayy before i knew queer people existed. but EVEN SO, 8 year old me could tell there was something going on between taku and matsuno/yutaka. like y'all "from that moment on, matsuno's place in my heart was always different from my other friends."(それ以来、僕の中で松野がいる場所はいつも他の連中とは違っていた)there is absolutely no hetero explanation for that line. i just rewatched this movie today as a 15 year old queer teen and found this video and i couldn't agree more, everything you said was spot on. also, i am still PISSED about the "you really liked rikako" line, ruined everything
It was some sort of sacrifice he has to do tho, i hope "by now" yutaka realise dating rikako is a huge mistake. sure nuff theyll broke up. jahahah we deserve a short sequel . :P;P
I think a lot of queer movies in Asia are officially hetero. It is legal to make queer content, but you'll condemn yourself to niche films and being an interesting poor person with little financing of your ideas. I've watched a lot of K-drama and there are so many queer characters who just get like, a sticker with "definitely hetero" at some point in the show. Like that friend with the fastfood restaurants in It's Okay not to be Okay. Hetero? Yeah, sure, let's just say that. Kang Tae-oh in Run on ... not bi at all! And the ending of Doom at Your Service? Kang Tae-oh and Doom ... they're don't have a cute meet promising sweet, sweet love at all, Oh, no, Doom will definitely be fine with the female lead who has obviously lost all interest in him. Etc. ... There are some beautiful and/or interesting LGBT depictions in a lot of films, but they all have to be able to pass as hetero to get funding.
Okay so my boyfriend introduced me to this movie a few months back and I couldn't help but rant about these things along the way. He told me the movie was really nice - and don't get me wrong I love the aesthetic, the music, the guys, but after getting real annoyed with the girl I was wondering was I in the wrong for judging too harshly? Kinda nice to know I wasn't the only one that saw an issue with her behavior and the outcome >.>
There is no way the castle scene with her lines playing was meant to be happy memories. It sounds like satire. I simply refuse to believe the creators meant it to be a happy, nostalgic montage.
I have seen romantisized relationships built mostly on quarrels, but this seems a bit much. And I mean, I don't remember the film, but are there any moments where you'd feel any kind of repressed attraction between him and the girl? Some quiet moment where you feel they could kiss if they didn't start fighting again? DOesn't seem like it, but any of you remember the details better?
@@cnj67I just finished the movie and the entire time there were NO signs of Taku ever liking rikaku. I assume the writers expected us to think Taku was romantically interested Rikaku with the scene of him accompanying rikaku, to ensure her safety, and the scene in the hotel where she shows more self awareness (same scene where she calls her ex and herself "bores". But I just chalked that up to Taku's helpful, outspoken, and naive personality. Those two have such horrendous chemistry that the only memories the writers could find for the montage were moments of their arguments, Rikaku berating Taku, and Rikaku self-pitying.
My literature professor once said “you’re never wrong when analyzing a book, if you find enough evidence and run with it you’ll be ok” And you just did that with this
The actual title of the movie in japanese is "I can hear the ocean." There are a couple of scenes by the ocean (party in Hawaii, confession on the bridge) but the only scene where we actually hear the ocean is on the dock.
watching this movie with my mom, at the dock scene she says "why are they so far from eachother? why are they not holding hands?" mum, i just got to show this video to you, you'll love it!
the belly laugh i gave when they showed him reminiscing while staring at the castle with sentimental music playing, only for the first words we hear from rikako to be "could you lend me some money?" ahahahahahaha
"Yutaka has the charisma of a dilapidated cardboard box, and Taku is not that far off. Which you could use as evidence for how compatible they are" when I tell you I gasped-
also it‘s kinda disturbing how the movie‘s called „ocean waves“ and literally the only and single time we see the ocean in the whole movie is in that confessional scene with taku and yakato at the pier, hinting that really the movie was all about them after all.
while i agree with u i think that wasnt what the creators meant to make cuz yeah he was with his best friend at the ocean but he confessed about the girl well thats why its called accidental after all they we understand that scene differently than what they wanted it to mean...well ours is a lot better than the original idea tho
My teacher once said " some titles have hidden meanings " And in order to find the hidden meaning of the title you need to know whats the nature of the title
I'm not really into the gay theory I think rikako and taku they both liked each other but they couldn't Express it in a nice way rikako had already psychology issues because of her family divorce and taku is normally gets angry fast and he didn't want to admit that he loves rikako because he knows that yutaka loves her so that's why rikako and taku both of them had their own struggles to admit their feelings toward each other but they were comfortable with each other enough to open up these weaknesses to each other And for the slap scene that he thought was dumb what I think is while all people around riakako seemed to hate her specially girls and in that scene she fights with them and being rude with the girls while taku is watching the fight... after the fight taku compliments her and said she did a great job facing all these girls and even make a girl cry After what taku said it seemed to rikako he is the only person that got her back and supported her and loved everything she did even the bad ones so she got emotional and slapped him or maybe slapped him cuz she thinks how fool is taku because he is rooting her for something not nice but still supporting her and again she got emotional and thought she doesn't deserve this kind of nice compliments of him(rikako sure she has self esteem issues after they got close because of the trip they had together after that she immediately pushed him away cuz she thought that is better for him he is kind and she is not and she thought he deserves better than her and that's why she ignored her plus she didn't want him to get any kind of harm so she Ignored him so the rumours that they dating will be reduce) And there is kinda another proof that rikako likes taku after the fight he asks taku how long he is been there she was worried that he realised that rikako is not a nice girl she cared about his opinion about her after the fight and again after she knows that he was there throughout the whole fight and still supporting her she was happy but emotional so she slapped him for the reason the I mentioned
I feel like this movie tried to make an enemy to lovers or tsundere trope thing, but like forgot the part where they're supposed to show some kind of attraction together and instead it's just them having shitty moments and calling it love
Most cathartic moment: When Taku finally gives Rikako the bitch-slap she deserved. Yes, she had tough things going on in her life, as well. But a lot of people do and still manage not to be absolute bitches to everyone else.
Not only is she a jerk, but I get the impression her comments on disliking people from Kochi likely have a lot more weight to an audience with knowledge of the sociopolitical context. There's a lot of regional discrimination within the same country, in much of the world (as an American, I don't think we quite have an equivalent, since much less of our history and culture is tied to our current geographical location), and it seems comparable to her being portrayed as a racist or classist. She specifically says she doesn't like boys from Kochi or their local dialect, and the school activity she's being called out for not participating in looks like it's probably a local tradition.
yea mate i also really liked that he just straight up slapped her back , like a lot of people would be like "oooh u cant hit a girl" meanwhile this bish be slapping taku left and right every second like its okay

Yeah, that's one point where I REALLY disagreed with the narrator, denigrating a peaceful comfortable life. If only unrequited love were the biggest problem in everyone's life. Far too many people are still struggling with the lowest tiers of Maslow's hierarchy.
He clearly did not have feelings for her. I mean that flashback with all these cringe moments about her clearly are not a flashback of someone he has any love for.
water drinker But dude, he’s only reminiscing of the bad things, because there are no good things! She has zero redeeming qualities, or atleast Taku never saw any of them!
As a straight male, I thought from the first 10 minutes Ghibli may have actually given us a gay film, and I was pumped. The movie kinda sucked with it's real ending, so in my head it just stops after the reunion scene. And honestly, I feel like the director would prefer it that way. It was so obvious that they were gay for each other or something. But it's Ghibli in the 80's, 90's? It *needed* to have this ending, but I think it was meant to have your ending
Ghibli studio has provided the best movies with a female perpective, the most respectful depiction of female gender roles, without the yucky syrup of mysticism (Like, some films have that "a mother always knows exactly, what ... " bla bla bla. Or "Little girls just love cleaning, and they are neat while doing so!") But in Ghibli film girls struggle with artistic blackouts, depression of a kind, (like Kiki and her painter (girl)friend) and when they work hard - also with very traditional girl's stuff - they are being cool and practical, not adorable. Like in Howl's moving Castle, but also CHihiro. What I see is a studio led by someone who has a special place in his heart for the feminine, non-patriarchal perspective.

I'm kind of just dying over the fact that all you could say for minutes was how boring the movie was and then as soon as the sunset scene came in you were so invested lol. Such a funny juxtaposition
If we leave out that the story isn't that interesting, because the characters are so, the music is still...yes, the music is such a masterpiece. And for me it's reason enough to see the film...over and over... But this Taku-Yutaka-Ship is realy interesting. Well I haven't thought of it, but if you tell it that way...it sounds obvious. Thank you for this quite funny thirty minutes XD P.S.: To be true: I like this slice-of-life and drinking soda on the rooftop, because it's so "normantic" (normal + romantic = romance, charmy of normality)
Also a lot of lgbt people don’t realize they are part of the community until much later in life. Suddenly you look back at your life until now and see little clues and unimportant memories, that were actually very clear signs that you choose to ignore or misinterpreted. A lot of people already know, but some just don’t even consider it as an option.
Yeah, when i came out as a lesbian i remembered how in 2nd grade i had a crush on my bestfriend who was a girl- but repressed the thought because no one else was like me, no one else was gay- and how I thought I had a crush on this one boy but really I wanted to be him because my friend liked him- and I had a crush on her.
this is true. when i found out i was lesbian, suddenly a lot of moments from my teenage yrs made sense. like how I used to think about ways to make my best friend happy only to realise I was in love with her and I was thinking about being her girlfriend. the reason why I never knew until later was because I didn't know liking girls was even an option, and it was actually a manga that made me realise that girls could like girls.
To add to your theory of "retelling of the scenes", that castle scene with Rikako's lines were probably Taku's enlightenment that he didn't like her at all. He was letting her go at that point
finished the film i was so angry about how it ended that i had to google "ocean waves gay", and here we are. (thanks, in this video you said all the things i was thinking while i was watching it.)
okay so I just finished watching the movie and let me say that Taku was clearly annoyed with Rikako even when she asked for money, he offered $300 (US dollar) for her to use for the rest of the trip. then she rudely ask for a 6k- at the elevator he was shocked how she could ask for so much so rudely, and when she left right after getting the money it's as of he isn't surprised, he told Yutaka right away despite her telling him not to tell anyone because people like Rikako just don't deserve that type of respect when they don't respect you that much either. the whole trip she treated Taku like he's some object to throw around, even her father didn't really consider him as important. Taku WAS annoyed and disappointed and looked like he regretted going there the whole trip. That table scene was his last straw to the idea that he had in the beginning that she was cool, strong or whatever. I had known people in the past that would call me over just to fill space, thinking they are cool and want someone that they think they can impress. She then comes back and reveal that she did just wants to brag. even the way she talks about the hotel stay is in a way that makes it seem like they did something. what confuses me was how she knew well that Yutaka and Taku are close friends, and that Yutaka likes her but she went out after rejecting him rudely to plant the idea that she slept with his best friend Taku to make him sadder. Taku was mad how she used that to make his friend feel so bad and to cause misunderstanding between them. something to note is that when Rikako slapped him he wasn't even hurt by it but slapped her back HARDER cause she has no right to be mad at him when he didn't do her any wrong. But when Yutaka punched him he was so hurt, he knows he didn't do anything wrong to him but forgave him right away. he was probably hurt that Yutaka still likes Rikako and was mad over her but even when he saw that she hurt him, he punched him and left. I thought that Rikako and Taku stopped talking to eachother for good... but then the ending where it's revealed that he liked her all along was so out of the blue, unlogical and unrealistic to be the case. he was never happy with her, whenever they were together, he was bored, annoyed, regretted helping her, and felt like he wasted his time with her. it would of been better if they changed the dialogue when Yutaka speaks to "I realized you *didn't* like Rikako, it was a misunderstanding" or "she wasn't nice to you at all that's why you didn't help her" and "She wasn't nice to either of us to begin with and I childishly ruined our friendship over her... I'm so sorry" then they continue with the comfortable silence watching the sunset or gaze at eachother then we start hearing faint conversations between them as the music get louder signaling that they are in good terms again. after the get together they walk together again and say something along the lines of "see you tomorrow" Then the movie end ✨ a platonic relationship would of honestly been better than THAT random ending we got
i actually busted a laugh when you showed us the ending scene of taku reminiscing his memories of rikako but none of them were actually happy moments LOL you weren't wrong about the scene being unintentionally funny
when i watched that scene, i was like "that's pretty awkward". plus, i was watching at my cousin's house i'm assuming they'll be like "why this film so boring" lol
When they talked about how he'd always been crazy about her, I literally busted out laughing. Like no, you haven't been. Every scene with her, you either ended up angry or annoyed. Like how??
Jessica Braud I know! Every scene she seemed more like a burden to him of which he was unwilling to carry, so like, I don't know how he came to the conclusion: I was crazy about her.
If only.Maybe they weren't allowed to write them as gay but still.....They could let the sound of the waves or something drown that out. Then we'd be free to interpret it as a straight or gay couple romance... Honestly that would be so much better :(
This is literally how my boyfriend and I reacted on that part, we were so ready and so sure that Taku was in love with Yutaka, everything made sense! Until it didn't lol
If I had a nickel for every time Ghibli has made a gay movie that’s not actually gay but should be gay cos it’d make the story so much better and the fact that it isn’t ruins the movie, I’d have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice Ps. And the way Rikako didn’t atone for any of her wrongdoings & how much trouble she caused for multiple people. And in the end the film presents her as some innocent, sweet, and emotionally well-adjusted girl? To that I say BLEARGH!

The scene at the beach with romantic music, the female lead is a terrible person, male lead says his friendship is different than it is with others WHAT GREAT A FRIENDS
Good god, I saw the same in an sci-fi animated series ( _Final Space_ , 2018) of all places: two male bro characters supposed to have this sort of pre-mission pep talk, but they're in front of some yellowing star with some warm music, and their talk became softer more intimate to a point of _hugging tight_ compared to one of the protag's (toxic) relationship with the only girl (toxic) character...and now the entire fanbase would rather the "bros" be The Couple. Confusing, yet hilarious in retrospect.
I mean it's how I always used to feel about guys before I was hit in the face with the gay. That not understanding the fuss when all my friends would gossip and I just wanted to play pokemon with them Haha. But genuinely he dose give of a why have girls when my bff can do so much more vibes and I'm here for it.
I love this video because it’s the literal embodiment of that one tumblr post that goes something like « why would you like media that is good when you can instead like media that is bad and just pace around your room like an insane person thinking about What If It Was Good?? »
I see a lot of comments pointing out that two guys can have a very close friendship without being gay, and I’m pretty sure everyone agrees on that, but well written stories can achieve a well portrayed platonic friendship without making it feel gay, and this movie just objectively fails at that. Look at Sex Education’s Eric and Otis for instance : one is openly gay, they have an amazing dancing scene together, and overall just have a beautiful relationship, yet not for a second does any viewer even consider the possibility of something romantic between them
Exactly, it’s the way in which Taku talks about Yutaka. He talks about girls like they’re all the same in the way that they can’t care about him in the way he deserved. Taku always talk about him in a way as though he meant more to him than anyone else. He tried so hard to please him, because he loves him.
eh at the same time this is a common thing you see across all media across all sexualities. I agree it's probably a failure on the writing and creation of the movie if they didn't come across as friends, but I also think people be horny and don't want to acknowledge that there's kinds of emotional bonds that aren't just sexual in nature. Like people in these comments are also like "omg the title is ocean waves and the only scene with the ocean is the two of them!" and it's like yeah, that implies their bond is meaningful, but it doesn't imply it's sexual lol.
@@banacarat5752 not really though. The jazz music is non diagetic so you can't count that as part of the moment. And if you've never watched a sunset with your friends I feel bad for you. Friends can have intimate or emotional moments between them...
Well tbf Marnie was there i could kind of make sense. Ocean Wave made just wish that they should took the gay route cuz personally this story was so meh for me.
i still dont think it has any gay intention its just about bro code... you can't like someone your friend crush on first... just like how chandler can't tell joey's girlfriend that he likes him when even joey is not even serious with her...
I swear I almost fliped my desk up side down when i heard Taku's last line about being CrAzY about that girl after seeing zero chemistry between them, it seemed so forced and came off super cringy in my opinion...
There's soooo much movies and series with that kinda shit where the protagonist claims that he loves the girl when he has 100x more chemistry with another boy
It was so annoying, I could have accepted any kind of ending but that didn't even make sense. Ghibli movies have most of the time a meaning or something but this was like: " yes she treats me like shit and is annoying and fights with me for no apparent reason, but suddenly I'm in love with her" it just didn't make sense at all and made me angry.
I really thought I’d love every movie Ghibli ever produced until I watched Ocean Waves. Thankfully, this video exists and I can enjoy the movie in a different way!
this movie really seems like the original intention was to actually be lgbt+ but they weren't allowed to actually do it like that so they just left the subtle hints

Not gonna lie, usually whenever people say a movie has queer undertones and stuff like that, it always seems like they're trying to find the gay in something that doesn't have it. Ironically, the one time when being gay makes a lot of sense in the context of the film, they go out of their way to force a straight moment. I genuinely believe it would have made sense to emphasize a gay relationship in this film because of how the female love interest seems to have no redeeming qualities, while the best friend is always there for him. There was potential.
honestly, most best friend relationships in media seems to have better chemistry than the actual. not just gay, though the trope is VERY RAMPANT, but straight stuff too. i feel seriously bad for all the second lead best friend characters.
My mom's a 56 year old woman. We watched this together. The entire time we kind of gossiped about how shitty the FL was and how palpable the romantic tension was between the two ML's. Like if a 56 year old woman can instantly tell the two ML's have romantic tension, then anyone can as well.
Women don't understand platonic friendships between men because women inately hate all other women and pretend they don't. Friendship bonds between men and women are very different. It's not gay to care for your bro. Now there's nothing wrong with being gay obviously, but I have no idea why women just project that any deep friendship between people has to be sexual. Think with your head, not your cooter lady.
Weird I didn't see it at all but I may have just been to bored to notice because the movie's super bland. They just seemed like dudes who were good friends but had little in common to actually spend all their time together, kinda like the dude from Poppy Hill with his best friend if you took away them both being in a club together.
I gotta say this movie really resonated with me because I've been in the same situation - spent waaaay too much time with a girl because I was into a guy who was into her, which led her to thinking I was into her. It really did no one any favors - we were all wasting our lives.
After a rewatch, this video is literally more interesting than the whole movie. (edit a year later) So strange!! I hated rikako as a kid due to dealing ingrained misogyny but now seeing her in the movie makes me sad. She’s the most interesting of the trip, with a more dramatic history, shorter temper and all. I know this is a fictional movie made in 1993 Japan but i really wish they’d done better by her.
This video is great. The movie could have been so interesting if they didn’t just force the romance between Taku and the very selfish and kind of a jerk girl that kept mistreating him. Like, he clearly had feelings for Yutaka smh. The movie could have been so interesting this way.
I think actually it's not necessarily a bad thing to have the 'romance' with Rikako in there. They're teenagers, learning about life and your sexuality, what you like, who you are ... that's not always clear as day from the start, it's something you learn step by step, including mis-steps and dating certain people only to find out that's not really what you want and need.
Ingusch This I get. But it was poorly executed imo because Rikako is just so toxic. I mean, I could see how she had feelings for him, but him, I absolutely do not believe that he has no reason to think positively of her while she keeps dragging him around and pushing him away.
@@m0m055 yeah no, I do agree with you there, she was really toxic and I honestly could not see what in the fresh hell would make her endearing or even lovable in his eyes. From her perspective, sure, I can see why she would grow to like him, but from his', she's seriously the worst. But the funny thing is: I have had relationships like that, with people who, from 2020 me's perspective, were extremely toxic and shitty to me - and yet back then I thought I loved them for some unfathomable reason. Stuff like that happens, people fall for others who aren't good to or for them.
Okay. Can we all take a moment to appreciate this guy on how amazingly he analysed this movie which most people would not even watch 20 min with full attention.
i only liked the film for it’s aesthetic. it really did not convince me the guy was in love with that unbearable jerk of a girl, i don’t think it convinced anyone really lol. but seeing this analysis gave me a whole new perspective on the film. it could’ve been so much more interesting... he deserved better and yutaka was RIGHT THERE smh as much as i love ghibli i really wish an lgbt ghibli film was a thing...
The emotional music for the reminiscing scene could double as an angry, melancolic scene. Like, remembering that one friend you tried to get along with but yoh ecentually got fed up with them and they retaliated, causing you to have friendship issues with others later in life.
Yeah same here, after I finished the film my first thought was "what was that? Is this really a Ghibli film?" It's such an unsatisfying ending because nothing significant ever develop between those two.
If you look up “covert narcissist” you’ll see a clear description of Rikako’s behaviour. Reserved and insecure with a quiet superiority and a lack of empathy, they will manipulate you by being directly controlling or by making you feel sorry for them with their “sob story”. You view them as fragile and decide you shouldn’t walk away because you feel like “they need you”. The cycle continues... and the manipulated person is constantly left confused because the narcissistic behaviour is being blurred by the sudden showcase of their vulnerable side. But that’s part of the weapon.
water drinker Empathy means to be able to understand the feelings of those around you, to put yourself in their shoes, it's not the same as lacking emotions altogether. If you still feel sorry for Rikako and relate to her situation it just means you're an empath yourself!
water drinker However the character itself is written in a super shallow manner so you can't really go much into it. I just noticed how similar her behavioural patterns were to what is labeled as a covert narcissist. This doesn't mean she's "a bitch" or inhuman or whatever, it's just someone who it'll be better to keep your distance from because sooner or later it'll just turn into a game of victimizing left and right. Just because she's got shit going on doesn't mean it's right to act rude to anyone who tries to HELP her
water drinker If it's for her case when is she shown to genuinely care for another character's emotions in the film? There might be a scene I've forgotten but I can't recall her being caring, just trying to impress her dad idk
water drinker I was actually looking for a comment like this. I read gay into a lot of things, but ocean waves wasn’t one of them. What I saw in this movie was exactly what I got at face value. Dumb, horny high schooler doing dumb dramatic high school things. Taku’s frustration with Rikako comes from wanting her to pay attention to him, and from being disappointed with who she really was. I can kind of see how Taku can be read as gay for Yutaka, but it honestly just read like a good friendship to me. I mean, if a close friend of mine suddenly got a crush on someone, I’d be a little jilted too. I think we’ve gained an obsession with looking at the world through a rainbow filter. Just because Rikako is a bitch doesn’t mean that Taku couldn’t have been into her. I dunno, this whole analysis screams of overthinking to me. Some things are what they are.
Imo the movie should’ve ended when they were looking out on the pier. When the movie kept on going I was so disappointed and the ending seems like such a stretch
saw ocean waves, the ending completely threw me off, knew that a youtuber must have done something about it, thanks man couldn’t have slept peacefully without this

Thanks for the great video! I'm Japanese and I was one of them though it is pointless and boring until today.
But this line from 11:02 ' I thought she'd never see his value ' (女なんぞにお前の良さは分かりゃせん) makes more sense because it literally says
'Women never understand how great you are'.
Why did Miyazaki not like Whisper of the Heart? It's one of my favourite movies.
@@wariofat he didn't like this one, and made whisper of the heart as a result

I think a lot of queer movies in Asia are officially hetero. It is legal to make queer content, but you'll condemn yourself to niche films and being an interesting poor person with little financing of your ideas.
I've watched a lot of K-drama and there are so many queer characters who just get like, a sticker with "definitely hetero" at some point in the show.

Those two have such horrendous chemistry that the only memories the writers could find for the montage were moments of their arguments, Rikaku berating Taku, and Rikaku self-pitying.

ikr
Exactly! Change the music to something sad and dramatic and watch how it actually lines up. That relationship was abusive and toxic
Editing is everything
I'm not really into the gay theory I think rikako and taku they both liked each other but they couldn't Express it in a nice way rikako had already psychology issues because of her family divorce and taku is normally gets angry fast and he didn't want to admit that he loves rikako because he knows that yutaka loves her so that's why rikako and taku both of them had their own struggles to admit their feelings toward each other but they were comfortable with each other enough to open up these weaknesses to each other
And for the slap scene that he thought was dumb what I think is while all people around riakako seemed to hate her specially girls and in that scene she fights with them and being rude with the girls while taku is watching the fight... after the fight taku compliments her and said she did a great job facing all these girls and even make a girl cry
After what taku said it seemed to rikako he is the only person that got her back and supported her and loved everything she did even the bad ones so she got emotional and slapped him or maybe slapped him cuz she thinks how fool is taku because he is rooting her for something not nice but still supporting her and again she got emotional and thought she doesn't deserve this kind of nice compliments of him(rikako sure she has self esteem issues after they got close because of the trip they had together after that she immediately pushed him away cuz she thought that is better for him he is kind and she is not and she thought he deserves better than her and that's why she ignored her plus she didn't want him to get any kind of harm so she Ignored him so the rumours that they dating will be reduce)
And there is kinda another proof that rikako likes taku after the fight he asks taku how long he is been there she was worried that he realised that rikako is not a nice girl she cared about his opinion about her after the fight and again after she knows that he was there throughout the whole fight and still supporting her she was happy but emotional so she slapped him for the reason the I mentioned
The love of my life, the girl who extorted me, treated me like shit and slapped me across the face

Ghibli studio has provided the best movies with a female perpective, the most respectful depiction of female gender roles, without the yucky syrup of mysticism (Like, some films have that "a mother always knows exactly, what ... " bla bla bla. Or "Little girls just love cleaning, and they are neat while doing so!")
But in Ghibli film girls struggle with artistic blackouts, depression of a kind, (like Kiki and her painter (girl)friend) and when they work hard - also with very traditional girl's stuff - they are being cool and practical, not adorable. Like in Howl's moving Castle, but also CHihiro.
What I see is a studio led by someone who has a special place in his heart for the feminine, non-patriarchal perspective.

Also a lot of lgbt people don’t realize they are part of the community until much later in life. Suddenly you look back at your life until now and see little clues and unimportant memories, that were actually very clear signs that you choose to ignore or misinterpreted.

Yeah, true. It's scary sometimes how many clues there were
this is true. when i found out i was lesbian, suddenly a lot of moments from my teenage yrs made sense. like how I used to think about ways to make my best friend happy only to realise I was in love with her and I was thinking about being her girlfriend. the reason why I never knew until later was because I didn't know liking girls was even an option, and it was actually a manga that made me realise that girls could like girls.

okay so I just finished watching the movie and let me say that Taku was clearly annoyed with Rikako even when she asked for money, he offered $300 (US dollar) for her to use for the rest of the trip. then she rudely ask for a 6k- at the elevator he was shocked how she could ask for so much so rudely, and when she left right after getting the money it's as of he isn't surprised, he told Yutaka right away despite her telling him not to tell anyone because people like Rikako just don't deserve that type of respect when they don't respect you that much either.
the whole trip she treated Taku like he's some object to throw around, even her father didn't really consider him as important.
I'm so sorry"
then they continue with the comfortable silence watching the sunset or gaze at eachother then we start hearing faint conversations between them as the music get louder signaling that they are in good terms again.
after the get together they walk together again and say something along the lines of "see you tomorrow"
Then the movie end ✨

That mean girls exist? And they often just get away with stuff? That everyone has a mean side?
Maybe this is a Japanese vs western thing that in the west we typically have a moral or point of some kind. If there was no point then that’s just real life, random and meaningless, and there would be nothing particular about it to make it worth sharing as a story. Even Camus’ the stranger offers more gratification than this.

Maybe this is a Japanese vs western thing that in the west we typically have a fairly defined moral or point of some kind when telling a story. If there was no point then that’s just real life, random and meaningless, it would be like rambling. But even “my dinner with Andre” makes rambling engaging, like even though they’re just talking without direction it becomes clear that the point is: “this is what a good conversation feels like.”

Oh yes I totally get it.

This I get. But it was poorly executed imo because Rikako is just so toxic. I mean, I could see how she had feelings for him, but him, I absolutely do not believe that he has no reason to think positively of her while she keeps dragging him around and pushing him away.

“i hadn’t noticed until then ………………….. that you really liked rikako.”
stares directly into the camera.
I just absolutely hate Rikako in general, the type of girl I hate in school. 🙄

water drinker I was actually looking for a comment like this.
When the movie kept on going I was so disappointed and the ending seems like such a stretch
i agree
In my head it ended there. Oh what about the other 10-30 minutes? Nah I don't remember that, that portion is in the shadow realm, never existed.
saw ocean waves, the ending completely threw me off, knew that a youtuber must have done something about it, thanks man couldn’t have slept peacefully without this
I was really confused when I watched this movie and now I understand why.
Oh god same!!
guess you could say it's just like my sexuality then: very confusing
This was a metaphor in many ways

I kinda wanna buy an outfit like the ones the characters were wearing, so aesthetic but even though I'm 1.8m I don't have those long anime legs lol
At least ur tall. Im short, and have to wear a stupid headcover
@karina thanks!
@@aquamarineancientsoul7893 I'm not sure what a headcover is. Is it a hat?
The light blue skinny jeans, tucked white t-shirt and maroon jacket is a LOOK
Go to the thrift
Maybe a writer wanted it to be gay, but didn't have the freedom too.
It's mostly like that
However that was.... I'm proud of him🥺❤
yeah probably
I feel like you've all mistaken brotherly love for boy on boy action
