  • Bill can't upload a Trying to Stan for Studio Ghibli... So he does the next best thing and ranks them all in a Tier list! I hope you enjoy this different format with Trying to Stan! (feedback welcome in the comments!) Do you agree? Did Bill not get something after watching every Studio Ghibli movie on HBO Max and Hulu? Between Spirited Away, Ponyo Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke and many more...which is Bill's favorite and least favorite? Let him know what to watch/listen to next in the comments, and don't forget to like the video, subscribe, and ring the bell if you're so inclined!

the fun thing about howl’s moving castle is that most of the plot development happens in the background. i’ve never met anyone who fully understood it the first time they watched it, and if you watch it again i’d recommend paying close attention to what background characters are saying.

Also just wanted to mention that in Japan, it’s sort of an old tradition for very young children to go on their first “errand”, it’s a big moment for them and the people in their community are supposed to encourage them along their way. I think the reason why no one questioned Sosuke in Ponyo was because it was a reference to him on his own errand

What I've read, no Kiki can no longer talk to her cat at the end. Apparently it's to show how all witches are close to their familiar in a best friend kind of way. However, once they begin to grow into adulthood, they lose that bond of speech between each other to show leaving childhood behind

In the brazilian dub we also got the line implying they can talk again. My takeaway was that as she lost contact with herself and with her witch side, getting burnt out, she lost the ability to talk to her familiar. When she reconnects with herself, she's able to talk to Jiji again and slowly that bond is strengthened again!

You should ABSOLUTELY read Howl’s Moving Castle! The book and movie are two different stories, as many people say, and I think you’d like Howl much better in the book than the movie- he’s an idiot who has to trick himself into taking responsibility for things and we love a dumb king. I like to think of the movie as how Howl tells people he and Sophie fell in love (off the rails time travel and all) and the book as how Sophie tells the story- aka Howl is an aggravating dramatic idiot and one time he got super drunk with his rugby team so she cut up his favorite outfit as revenge.

(Prefacing this with I’m def not mad at you for having differing opinions on cartoons lol) It never occurred to me before, but hearing you talk about Ponyo made me realize that the reason I love her so much is because I relate to her as an autistic person and read her as autistic too.
She has no concept of what’s socially acceptable, she doesn’t have any volume control, she obsesses over specific things/people/food, she experiences emotions intensely, and she’s steadfast in doing what she wants to do and won’t take no for an answer. I was just like that as a kid, but so many people were annoyed by me that I changed my behaviors to blend in. But I did have my mom, who was the most patient parent a neurodivergent kid could ask for, and a few of good friends who loved me for me, and they were my safe haven. Sosuke and his mom remind me of my own friends and mom, with the way they accept Ponyo despite her differences and give her a home she can be herself in :)
I’m DEFINITELY not saying you’re somehow being insensitive for not liking Ponyo, she’s just a character and my personal relation to her is just personal! I’m only sharing my own thoughts so maybe you can get why other people could connect to her when she’s not your cup of tea ^^ (Just covering my bases here since I know folks can get all defensive & aggressive over characters they relate to and I don’t want you to think this is like that lol)
Anyways, great video as always, I loved it! It’s so interesting hearing others’ opinions on Ghibli films, especially from someone as thoughtful as you!

THIS!!!! This is exactly what I love about making content like this! I never would have connected that on my own (like i said, i just picture getting punished when I see a child yelling a lot because of my own experiences) and you gave me something more to consider that adds a perspective I don't have while acknowledging it's okay we don't agree! Thank you for this so much! :)

    • @wolfywonder8480
      @wolfywonder8480 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yeah, another thing I love about Ponyo is that the kids are given their own agency. The adults in their lives don’t put them down or invalidate their feelings, and if they do, they’re portrayed as clearly in the wrong (even if they have good reasons). As a kid who was often dragged along into doing things I didn’t really want to, and whose interests were often invalidated or made fun of by my peers and family, it was so cathartic to see two kids about my age (I saw Ponyo in theaters when it came out) just allowed to be kids and make their own choices. Sure, they need support, but they don’t need to be told what they’re supposed to think and feel. Kids know those things already, and if they don’t, they usually ask someone about it. At no point does anyone try to stop the kids because they’re kids (except Ponyo’s dad, and again, he’s painted as an antagonist for most of the movie).

It's always so great to me to see other people talk about the movies beyond the popular ones (Spirited Away, Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle), and obviously they're popular for a reason, and they're fantastic movies, but it's nice to see someone talk about the lesser known ones (From Up on Poppy Hill, The Cat Returns, My Neighbors the Yamadas). And personally, I really, really love that we share a lot of thoughts and opinions on most of these movies. I cheered out loud when you said The Cat Returns was a Bestie, because it's my favorite of all the Ghibli movies. I like that you respected the messages or the origins that you don't have a connection with because you didn't grow up with the movie or with Japanese folklore, but still recognized that those were important. I've been binging a lot of your videos these past few days, but I wanted to take the time now to say hi, and thank you for being so positive and thoughtful and open. Though we own Laputa with only Japanese dub and the only language we know that they have subtitles is Finnish, so my family watches it with Finnish sub but the problem is that I don’t know how to read Finnish, yeah I can speak it, but read it, pfft I only finished preschool there. Also, howl’s moving castle shall forever be my favorite movie. Also also, I agree with the thing about totoro, not the mom thing, cause my mind doesn’t work like that, but yeah such an amazing movie and the sound track (as for most ghibli movies) was amazing and path of the wind was one my favorite songs to learn on the piano (right after always with my from spirited away). So anyway, the point is that I adore these movies and they have always been my life.

Ghibli is about childhood and nature and making the world a better place and passion and redemption and it’s my favourite, it has such a gorgeous story, it has all the depth and emotion of modern classics and yet it’s told with the gentleness and comfort of someone leading you through hard times while holding your hand.

Second, Mother Mother is (most likely) releasing a new album on friday!! (Well, they made a tiktok with new music and at the end it had a date that was this friday. They've also mentioned multiple times that they're almost done the album) I think i'd be really cool if you reviewed it! I can't give a sad warning for anything, but you know what Mother Mother is like.

ghibli is often connected with the concept of 'ma' or intentional emptiness and thats what they allow me to feel; when im watching ghibli, i dont look for distractions or overanalyze, i just let myself exist in these moments of film, emote on a more basal level
Laputa was my gateway and nausicaa is my undeniable fave just construction and message and art and music wise, but kikis is the balm of comfort i need (like, i have a pavlovian response of shedding anxiety when the music plays)
loved this format and all the thought you went into this - i think this kind of format could work with, say, hozier songs, or the Weird Era disney movies like atlantis and treasure planet!
    hugs!

Bill! If you love Nausicaä, then I would definitely recommend reading the full manga series. ✨ Written and illustrated by Miyazaki, it delves so much deeper into the world, and touches on darker themes, but (imo) still pairs wonderfully with the movie. ☁️ Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was the first Miyazaki film I watched as a young child, but even today, seeing it with a more mature eye, it holds a special place in my heart-not just for nostalgia’s sake, but also because of its messages about the Earth we all share. 🐛 Best wishes, I appreciate you and your content!

There's actually a theory about Ponyo that their town gets hit by a tsunami and they all die. Therefore arriving to the afterlife where they see all the prehistoric, extinct fish and the family on a boat with outdated fashion from either the Taisho (1912-1926) or Showa (late 1920s-early 1940s) period. That's also why all the old women aren't wheelchair-bound at the end of the movie; in afterlife nobody feels pain. There are many more factors that supports this theory and I think this is why I love the movie so much. It's ditsy and fun but with a dark undertone of life and death. A pretty interesting theory that I recommend learning about :)

There’s a fantastic documentary about Hayo Miyazaki that you should watch. It may change your mind a little on Ponyo, after watching the documentary and re-watching Ponyo I now have a greater appreciation for the movie.
But I sat and waited for one of my favourites Graveyard of the Fireflies. It gives me so many feels every time I see it. I love that Studio Ghibli can go from something like Kiki’s Delivery Service to something as devastatingly stunning as Graveyard of the Fireflies.
This is why Hayo is a master story teller and artist. His love and attention to details and dedication to movement in animation is admirable. ❤️ He’s a little bit crazy and harsh and apparently difficult to work for/with but I would die to have one sit down with him.

    Personal Favorites
8: The Cat Returns - Cute, fun, reminds me a lot of the movies I watched all the time as a kid.
7: My Neighbor Totoro: It took me a few watches to really appreciate this movie, now it's like being given a prescription for happiness.
6: Castle in the Sky - My first Ghibli film, and holds up quite well next to a lot the 80s fantasy adventure flicks.
5: Spirited Away - I ADORE this movie, even if it’s not my absolute favorite, Ghibli’s biggest competition is themself.
    4: Kiki’s Delivery Service - A very relatable story with a cute-as-heck protagonist.
3: Porco Rosso - One of the hardest sells of any of the Ghibli movies, but you’ll find it’s some of their most adult work.
2: Howl’s Moving Castle - I want to live in this movie.
1: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - The Greatest Animated Movie Ever, with one of the best character in all of fiction.

I was ready to say NO all of these movies are 100% amazing!!! But honestly I pretty well agreed with your list
Nausicaa is my #1 so I’m glad you put it in the top tier
The Wind Rises makes a lot more sense when you realize it’s a fictional autobiography of Hayao Miyazaki’s life (in a sense). It was meant to be his last produced movie and he put such a.. personal touch on it like no movie before it. Honestly I was bawling by the end so I have a lot of respect for the film

Totoro is my absolute favourite, it's the best comfort movie for me. I grew up in the countryside and I was very much like Satsuki so the whole movie makes me so nostalgic. It was also my first ghibli movie and I used to watch it with my grandma all the time in her big old creaky house. I would ask my grandma to buy me cucumbers so that I could eat them like the children in the movie xD It just reminds me of warm summer evenings spent on the porch listening to the insects buzz :)

ponyo was the first film I ever saw in a cinema, my dad took me for my birthday when I was really young and so I guess it just reminds me of a good point in my childhood and it's been a comfort film over the years because of those associations :) but I can see where you come from with Ponyo being annoying (she is quite loud) but the whole development of Sosuke not interacting with kids his own age and being more comfortable with adults and then finally finding someone like him that he can talk to and be around is really important especially for people around that age who see the film

If I'm being completely honest I don't think the tier list system works that well for you. There were a lot of times where it felt like you were really struggling to make judgements because you don't really like being that negative about things, and I think that's great! Trying to stan brings out your best quality which is being able to see the good in things you've never seen before.

I respect your opinions (especially about Porco Rosso, which deserves it's place 100%) but also oof I had to fight my instincts through the entire Ponyo bit because that is one of my top 5 and it's v close to my heart.
The thing with Ghibli though is that most of the movies are definitely made mainly for kids and you can definitely tell - Ponyo and Pom Poko are both great examples of this, and for people that didn't grow up with them they tend to be either boring or too on the nose or basically just childish ...which is ironically why I don't like My Neighbor totoro much, so ya know, your opinions are valid

Haven't watched it all yet but I feel like From Up on Poppy Hill and Whisper of the Heart are always slept on, likely because they don't have the magical elements or aren't the 'epics'. I feel like the art style and music really fit that kind of smaller scale story.

sdfgh I love the later parts of Castle In The Sky and Spirited Away! I was soo obsessed with the castle and the ruins and always wanted to see more of it. And the whole trip on the train to this liminal space outside of the bath house.
Howl is 100% meant to be a selfish, arrogant man- the point of the love story between him and Sophie is that we don't always fall in love with 'perfect' people imo and ultimately his 'heart' (haha) is in the right place. The book it's based on is *very* different, but also very good. (The movie is my personal favorite because of the music, the amazing cast of characters and bc it made me beg my mom for piano lessons when I was 12 haha!)
Ponyo is very much meant to be a movie for small children. The logic and adult worries we have aren't meant to be an issue and I believe it's a very popular movie for small kids. Lots of small-kid logic and magical realism, I think. I don't dislike it, but I'm not the target audience as an adult and that's perfectly okay.
Princess Mononoke is so perfect. The right mix of scary and beautiful. (My dad let me watch it when I was 8 and I had nightmares about it for days!) I really love Tales of Earthsea, but I agree that it fails massively in terms of worldbuilding. That's kind of what happens when you try to adapt a massive fantasy world spanning multiple books into one movie-length story. I guess I mostly like it for its visuals and the concepts and background story it only manages to scratch. Which is probably in a similar vein to why I like the hints at the ruins of the castle in the sky.
(Cat Returns is too surreal for me personally and bottom-tier tbh. I'm also not a huge fan of Ghibli's war movies, but that's mostly bc I don't like war in media as entertainment in general.)
