My favorite is definitely Lady Eboshi for all the reasons told. I always get frustrated watching with people who don't get her but that's what makes her work well. The little human touches are there to her, but you can possibly miss them and just see her as a usual villain. But there's so much more to her and you can watch the movie just for her complexity. She's easily my favorite in that movie

I just wanna point out that, like Lady Eboshi, Mononoke also tiptoes the line between hero and villain too. When we fist meet her she is quite abrasive, wants to maintain the status quo, and has a very survival of the fittest mentality. Even by the end of the film she hasn't been entirely tamed for lack of a better word. Princess Mononoke really is an amazing environmentalist movie. You have the antihero Mononoke butting heads with the antivillian Eboshi, and the protagonist's plight is getting them to learn how to coexist. It fairly displays both sides of the argument, examines the nuances, and manages to do it without coming off as preachy.
And Muska is voiced by Mark Hamil Zeniba and yubaba are voiced by Suzanne Pleshette The English dub of these movie don’t hold back and get the best of the best voice actors to play these roles
The God Warriors are one of my favorite Ghibli creatures, too. They’re like the bigger, more malevolent versions of the robot soldiers from “Castle In The Sky” (the latter of which are also one of my favorite Ghibli creatures).

For me, I loved Pom Poko, The Wind Rises and From Up On Poppy Hill, for their great characters, poignant messages, funny comedy and great animation.
Mark Hamill also plays a voice acting role in Miyazaki’s latest film, “The Boy And The Heron/How Do You Live?” His voice was almost unrecognizable (but in a good way, which shows Hamill’s remarkable skill as a vocal chameleon), but I can hear a little bit of Muska’s voice under Hamill’s older speaking voice.

Lady Eboshi is so dam relatable, both caring deeply for her people and wanting to secure a future for them, but same time being ruthless against anything that stands in the way of that, even the forest wildlife and spirits. That can speak so true to many leaders, the welfare of their people is what matters most, even at the expense of others, world leaders going to war with other nations to protect their own, while loving their nation, that love doesn't extend beyond their borders. When I was younger I hated Lady Eboshi for what she did, but grown up now rewatching, she becomes so understandable, deeply flawed but at the same time so very, very human.
I think the reason Mandrake is alot more threatening looking than Bella helps that he is voiced by Richard E Grant an Actor who is no stranger to playing villains

this is what I like about Ghibli. they don't hold back how odd, weird, crazy, greedy and lustful some people mostly adults can be. the art is not always 100% the same. but you can still tell it's them just by looking at the art work. some people over look them because they "don't agree with the art work". yeah but they tell stories and shows how messy humans actually are. trauma, addiction, obsession and all those common things that clouds us in are life styles. and there a few people are just to far gone to change or start over. and that's the thing about Ghibli. villains are not just be for no reason. we can actually understand most of them without backstories. some of us are just jerks because we view bad as normal and a game. as well as people that think the more good the more they can go to heaven. no one has to act be every evil thing in the book for you to see you can do better.

I thought dubs were supposed to be a translation of the Japanese dub. I speak both so I understand the original and for these clips they are comp diff. Like they fill in the blanks and make their own dialogue. Direct translation would make the experience better even if their are no direct translation’s for certain Japanese words and phrases
All of the villains from these Ghibli films kind of look like they belong in anime. Except for Bella Yaga. She doesn’t look anything like anime. Nor does her movie. Other than her, the others look like anime. I wonder if that’s what the studio was trying to make it the time. The anime world will be happy to see if there’s more additions to it.
Everyone's gonna hate me for saying this, but the villain from Howl's Moving Castle is the biggest problem I have with the movie. I don't get the hype with her or the movie in general. She's so boring, and generic, and she doesn't have the intimidation level to back her up like Zarkon from Voltron had. The way she calls off the war because Howl fell in love is really stupid. If she either had more personality or gets defeated by the main characters, rather than calling the war off and made her more intimidating, then she would've been great.
As someone who likes “Howl’s Moving Castle”, I, too will admit that Madam Suliman is probably the weakest part of the film. She stands out compared to Ghibli’s other antagonists, and not in a good or memorable way. She’s not very intimidating, unlike Muska from “Castle In The Sky”, nor does she have a sympathetic side that some of Miyazaki’s other antagonists have, making her rather one-note among so many of Ghibli’s layered and complex antagonists. Also, the motivations for some of her actions are rather confusing. At least the motivations of Ghibli’s other antagonists, as screwed up as they may be, are made more clear to the audience.
Nausicaa was an amazing movie but it absolutely BUTCHERED Kishanas character. She makes for a great antagonist in the movie but shes honestly my favorite protagonist of all time in the manga.
What villains??? I wasn’t aware there were any villains in Ghibli films. 🤔 My vote goes to The Parakeet King. He toppled that tower quicker than the US president toppled the economy and for very stupid reasons. 😁
Yes, the only true unredeemable villain in Ghibli’s entire filmography, I believe, is Colonel Muska from “Castle In The Sky”. But, I think it’s safe to say that most Ghibli films have antagonists rather than villains, per se. Nevertheless, it is rather interesting that although Miyazaki has been largely opposed to using unredeemable villains in his work, he has still managed to create one great true villain and antagonists with at least better villainous qualities than Disney’s recent work. That’s pathetic on Disney’s part, considering that they have shown to make great, memorable villains in the past.

I know it’s your opinion but I disagree with you ranking Madame Suliman much higher than Lady Eboshi, and she’s more one-note and slightly forgettable than Ghibli’s other antagonists so frankly I think Suliman should’ve been 5/10 or 6/10 while Eboshi much Higher (8/10 or 9/10).

She’s not very intimidating, unlike Muska from “Castle In The Sky”, nor does she have a sympathetic side that some of Miyazaki’s other antagonists have, making her rather one-note among so many of Ghibli’s layered and complex antagonists. Also, the motivations for some of her actions are rather confusing. At least the motivations of Ghibli’s other antagonists, as screwed up as they may be, are made more clear to the audience.

Nausicaa was an amazing movie but it absolutely BUTCHERED Kishanas character. She makes for a great antagonist in the movie but shes honestly my favorite protagonist of all time in the manga.

Yes, the only true unredeemable villain in Ghibli’s entire filmography, I believe, is Colonel Muska from “Castle In The Sky”. But, I think it’s safe to say that most Ghibli films have antagonists rather than villains, per se. Nevertheless, it is rather interesting that although Miyazaki has been largely opposed to using unredeemable villains in his work, he has still managed to create one great true villain and antagonists with at least better villainous qualities than Disney’s recent work. That’s pathetic on Disney’s part, considering that they have shown to make great, memorable villains in the past.
@@BirdsandGhibliFan The only reason Muska is irredeemable is because he is military. Miyazaki had to make him a military man just to make a proper villain. Also pirate lady was redeemed in Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

I know it’s your opinion but I disagree with you ranking Madame Suliman much higher than Lady Eboshi, and she’s more one-note and slightly forgettable than Ghibli’s other antagonists so frankly I think Suliman should’ve been 5/10 or 6/10 while Eboshi much Higher (8/10 or 9/10).

So that’s your call on saying Suliman was a "better villain" than Eboshi but she’s literally the weakest and least memorable of Studio Ghibli’s villains.
