1:35:50 - I would say that Grave of the Fireflies does have many tie-ins with rest of the Ghibli library despite the fact it feels extremely different. The themes of war and childhood are prominent in many Ghibli films, and note that it was released as a companion to My Neighbor Totoro [edit: as you mention!], which is also about two siblings largely fending for themselves in the absence of their mother (the shared umbrella/piggyback image is no coincidence). I watched it about a decade ago and with the English dub, so I'm trying to find a good time to watch it in the original Japanese.
Thank you so much for making this video. I’m deeply touched by how much energy and time you are willing to spend on making this video not only interesting but also profound and illuminating. Ever since I watched spirited away the first time when I was a kid, I’ve been so mysteriously mesmerized by the scene where Chihiro sat on the train and looking outside the window. I think about the scene whenever I can’t fall asleep to calm myself down. I never knew why. I thought it might be the music and the picture. But you gave me a really good explanation. The serenity and calmness came from chihiro’s growth through out the movie, from being panicky and scared in the beginning, to being calm and finding her place and knowing her role in the end. I love the comparison between this scene and the eating rice ball crying scene. I guess I felt like the eating rice ball crying Chihiro for very long and unconsciously yearned to become the one who can accept who she is and where she is at. Your analysis of the scene made me love this movie even more. I sang いつも何度もでも to my daughter from the day she’s born to get her to sleep. Now I’m getting to know why. Thank you again for your work.
I think Hayao Miyazaki's works are very personal and even those works that are at the bottom or in the middle of the rating may be in higher places for different people. I just really like “the wind risesr” 😔
Finally someone who appreciates Arrietty’s beauty, most reviews i see about it only mention negative aspects about it and from what I’ve heard a lot of people who watched it found it boring. Its nice to see more people who also like the movie, great reviews!
Thank you so much! And likewise, I often see Arrietty dismissed as slow or ordinary, but I was hooked from the beginning so I figure I should give movies like that more of a shout-out.
BEST GHIBLI REVIEW EVER. Can’t imagine how much effort and time was taken to complete this masterpiece. Hats off to all the Ghibli films, directors, and to you, Canon Fodder!!👏 👏 👏 ✨✨
Thank you for this truly wonderful exploration of the Ghibli canon, which delves so much deeper than most of the quite surface-level "tier ranking" style videos on TH-cam. Those videos have their merits, but I'm personally a bigger fan of this kind of deep analysis. Your editing was excellent and your script and commentary on each film was clearly heartfelt and deeply considered. I loved how you strove to examine the chief themes of each film, how you found positive things to say about all but the bottom few (which are deserving of criticism) and how you managed to draw together the personal/creative narratives of both Miyazaki and Takahata through their respective film canons. I cried during the Grave of the Fireflies bit. That movie, gosh. Just hearing you describe it was too much. I wanted to make special note of what you said about how it is so worth it to explore the hidden gems of the catalog because you might just find your own personal favorite film among the lesser-known movies. I found this to be very true for myself as Whisper of the Heart is that special personal favorite for me. I also commend you for picking something other than (the usually default) Spirited Away for the number one spot. It's a masterpiece but not the only one Miyazaki made and I'm glad to see that recognized. Also pleased to see how high you placed Arrietty! I watched this video in three segments when I could and I'm so glad I took the time to do so. You deserve so many more views. Please keep up the great work. This is the kind of long-form content that TH-cam alone can provide in an increasingly quick fix content culture. Thank you!
Thank you so much for such a measured response. I'm honestly not sure how to convey my gratitude but I hope you know how much I truly appreciate you taking the time, both to watch the review and to leave this comment. It means a lot seeing you recognize and acknowledge what I was striving for and I never once imagined that part of my commentary could move somebody to tears so that one's still processing for me! Also always glad to see another fan of both Arrietty and Whisper of the Heart, and I hope if one day you catch Only Yesterday (if you haven't already) then it'll be to your tastes in a similar fashion. At any rate, I plan to keep going so I suppose I'll see you on the next one! Thank you once again, and do let me know if there are any other franchises you'd love to see!
Your reviews are just enough funny to keep people hooked but not too much that it reduces the seriousness of the project as a whole and with just the right amount of depth in undercurrent detail to make the viewer think more in-depth about the movies than maybe they had previously. Whilst the entirety of your Howls Moving Castle review was humorous to the point of danger (had I been drinking anything during it), I must admit to being a little bit biased for that one. It was my first ever Ghibli movie, so it holds a special place in my heart, even with it being, how did you put it? "nebulous as fuck and batshit insane" hahaha 😂😂😂
I thoroughly enjoyed the video; the editing and commentary were excellent! I genuinely hope your channel continues to grow, as you deserve nothing but the best.
I am from Japan and although I watched Only Yesterday many, many years ago, it is the one that I refer back to the most. I also think the artwork is the most beautiful of Studio Ghibli works. Like Taeko, I find myself tethered to younger versions of myself. This, I find both bothersome and encouraging, as you are you no matter how much you age.
Hey I just wanted to say the amount of work you put into this is inspiring. The in depth look on every single film kept me invested from start to finish. This is in my top 10 favorite TH-cam videos ever. Subscribed thank you for your hard work.
Gteat list. My fave includes: 1. Whisper of the Heart - I feel that this resonates more with artists and creative tendencies.. the challenges they face about their art.. balancing passion with obligation and family... self doubts 2. Only Yesterday- very relatable and top notch animation. I love the artistic cboices made to differenciate the present from the flashback. 3. Grave of the Fireflies- hard to watch but an amazing film nevertheless
Interesting that you mentioned the voice acting in Laputa: Castle in the Sky, it might be the only one I prefer to watch dubbed instead of with subtitles. In the English dub it has Mark Hamill as Pazu, and generally better voice acting than in the original. Also when you described one of the issues with Ghibli films in general being that they end too abruptly, it reminded me that I recently watched Porco Rosso and at the end I was like, “wait, that’s it?” Appreciate you making this video, cheers!
I just want to say that you’re starting something truly special with this channel. I hope you won’t be disheartened if it takes some time for you to get the recognition you deserve, because you are doing fabulous work and I hope you can continue to do so and enjoy great success for it.
Thank you for the very kind and considerate comment. I'm honestly a bit taken aback and I'm just grateful you got something from them so I'll be sure to keep going and hopefully I'll be seeing you on the next one. Very glad to have you on board!
This was beautiful, thoughtful and filled with genuinely impressive detail. The editing, the perfectly paced explanations of every hidden meaning, it was just perfect... seriously this was a genuine treat to watch. Thank you for putting in the time to create this. The moment you upload your next video, i will be here : ) btw damn you for making me cry with the brutal explanation of 'Graveyard of the fireflies' now that I have kids, I do not have the emotional strength to ever watch that masterpiece again :(
Thank you brother, it's good to know you enjoyed it a lot (man-tears aside :P) If you do muster the courage to revisit Grave of the Fireflies then definitely follow it up with My Neighbor Totoro (or just skip right to that); as someone with kids I imagine that one would also hit extra hard but in a much more positive way so it'd be interesting to see how it affects you. Thanks again for the kinds words and I'll see you on the next one :D
I never leave comments on videos, but I really felt like I needed to say that your video is outstanding! The editing and quality is very well done and hope to see more videos from you as I am going to subscribe. Pixar movies like someone else had mentioned in the comments would be a great idea as well as your opinion on Pokémon! I have a very similar ranking to this list and am glad that someone else ranked Porco Rosso as high as you did as it is one of my favorites. Appreciate all the work and effort you put into this video and hope to see more. Take Care
Haven’t watched yet but really enjoyed the Bond ranking and looking forward to checking this out in the next day or two. Wasn’t sure if this was a one and done channel or not but glad I subscribed to find it wasn’t.
Thanks Tim, it's nice to know you also enjoyed the 007 ranking and I hope you on both videos I did justice to your favorites. Catch you on the next one!
I'd say I personally did enjoy Poppy Hill a bit more than you and would rank it higher, but nevertheless, great review of the whole run. Looking forward to the next one!
Well said about the wind rises. I am one of those people who was greatly affected by it. It’s weirdly special to me because it was the first Miyazaki film I saw in the theaters. It has had such a profound impact on me and now I’m even doing science
I like "From up on Poppy Hill" a lot. One of few that did not have supernatural mythology. And I would place Howl's better, maybe 4 or 5. Otherwise, okay. Marnie was wonderful, until the end, when there were too many tragedies told at the same time, making it tough to believe. All of those were better than Arrietty, in my opinion.
Personal favorites: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (First exposure to Ghibli, loved the epic scale, a little rough around the edges but I enjoyed the "raw" feeling, well written female protagonist, interesting side characters, loved the plot and environmental messages) Spirited Away (Magical film, it deserves all the praise, is not overhyped) Howl's Moving Castle (Plot at times is a bit messy but I enjoyed the fantastical elements, visually very well done and creative) Great: Castle in the Sky (Just a fun adventure film, only problem I have with it is the two main characters are a little undeveloped and at times the pace is a bit rushed) Princess Mononoke (Fleshed out some ideas from Nausicaä, characters are very well written and interesting, probably the most violent out of all the Ghibli films had some more disturbing images which is why I knocked it down one peg-not pleasant to the eyes) Good movie: My Neighbor Totoro (Very campy movie. I'd call it a "vibe" film. Good film to watch on a rainy day to cheer you up. Innocent feeling) Kiki's Delivery Service (Fun film about growing up and venturing out on your own. I don't have much to say about this one. Has a simple story) Porco Rosso (Plane sequences were very fun to watch, underwhelming third act, and doesn't have the most likable protagonist) The Cat Returns (Probably had the most fun with this film, believe it or not, thoroughly enjoyed this one, transported to another world) Ponyo (Liam Neeson did a wonderful job voice acting as the father, visually this one really stands out, I do see the influence of Little Mermaid) Good movie but not my cup of tea: Only Yesterday (I don't like to look back at my childhood memories but I think this one depends on where you are in life) Whisper of the Heart (Probably my favorite of the "slice of life" films they've done, it's a feel-good movie about going after your dreams, very inspirational) The Wind Rises (It's a very well done film, kind of a sad tragic film in a way, contains my least favorite scene of their whole filmography-blood gushing out. I felt a little depressed after watching this one. Interesting dilemma of finding/doing your purpose but having that role have destructive elements) When Marnie was There (Probably one of the weirder films they've done. I enjoyed the plot twist ending. I wasn't a fan of how they depicted their relationship before the plot twist. It was a little too intimate for me) Meh: My Neighbors the Yamadas (It's a fine film just didn't really do anything for me) Arrietty (It's a well-done film, and it's visually striking I just wasn't invested in the smaller-scale story. This is probably the blandest film they've done) From Up on Poppy Hill (Very beautiful visually, didn't like the potential incest plotline) Gets too much hate but I was entertained: Tales from Earthsea (Might be their worst film but I was laughing at how bad it was so it's kind of like The Room. The villain looked like Noodle from Gorillaz so that's a plus) Earwig and the Witch (This film is not as bad as people say it is. I wish they fleshed out the ending more, it just ended abruptly but if you understand what it's based on it's a pretty good adaptation because the author died before they could finish it) Bad movie would not rewatch/I did not like: Ocean Waves (Longest 70 minutes of my life, did not have likable characters and I just didn't care about the teen drama/love triangle) Pom Poko (I did not like this film. It was visually weird at times and the tone was all over the place. Might be my least favorite film of theirs) The Tale of the Princess Kugaya (I did not connect with the protagonist/message of the film. A little too out there for me) One-Time Viewing Experience Grave of the Fireflies (This movie is very well made and I appreciate it but it's way too depressing for me to rewatch)
Thanks for sharing - I especially like your assessment of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. The roughness really does add to it and it's one of the ones that I'm most looking forward to revisiting. It's really stuck with me.
@@canonfodder44 Spirited Away and Grave of the Fireflies are my favorites, and I very much enjoyed what you had to say about them. Princess Kaguya is probably in my top 3, too, but I understand putting it lower because of how many amazing movies came out of Studio Ghibli. Also, you definitely sold me on finally watching Whisper of the Heart.
59:38 - How do we know that the war was a grander scheme to teach Howl about love? I assumed that Suliman said it was time to end the war because the prince had been found.
i firmly believe that ghibli rankings aside from the bottom 3 can be anyones favorite movie and it be a valid opinion. but i cant help but feel you gave an unfair view to from up on poppy hill. i think its one of the strongest written film and it also had a ton of input from hayao miyzaki. so just calling it a goro movie and keeping it below less impactful movies seemingly for that reason i think is a bit strange. 10/10 video otherwise
The Cat Returns, one of the worst films ever made, better than When Marnie Was There????????? What's your problem, dude? "Oh it has cats" - fuck that shit. This movie is worst than Earwig. Please re-do the list.
Chill haha - but you are right. Cat Returns is the only Ghibli movie I had to turn off on first viewing and its the shortest one... In contrast Marnie is possibly the best Ghibli movie outside of the universally recognised classics
@@ross45768The problem is that the movie sucks balls, and everyone is "look, cats! Owwwwnnn". Really, that movie doesn't even feel like a Ghibli film. It's an unimaginative, boring, ugly animation for furry lovers and that kind of crazy people.
@@gdplayer8768 Earwig is an abomination. But you know Ghibli will never make that kind of shit again. Cat Returns is a Ghibli movie for sure, but a really bad one. It's like an awful version of what Ghibli could be. An alternative dimension where Studio Ghibli makes retarded films like Cat Returns. Earwig is easier to ignore. And Marnie is really really good. Not the best of the filmography, but a really good movie.

When Marnie was There (Probably one of the weirder films they've done. I enjoyed the plot twist ending. I wasn't a fan of how they depicted their relationship before the plot twist. It was a little too intimate for me)
Meh:
My Neighbors the Yamadas (It's a fine film just didn't really do anything for me)
Arrietty (It's a well-done film, and it's visually striking I just wasn't invested in the smaller-scale story. This is probably the blandest film they've done)
From Up on Poppy Hill (Very beautiful visually, didn't like the potential incest plotline)
Gets too much hate but I was entertained:
Tales from Earthsea (Might be their worst film but I was laughing at how bad it was so it's kind of like The Room. The villain looked like Noodle from Gorillaz so that's a plus)
Earwig and the Witch (This film is not as bad as people say it is. I wish they fleshed out the ending more, it just ended abruptly but if you understand what it's based on it's a pretty good adaptation because the author died before they could finish it)
Bad movie would not rewatch/I did not like:
Ocean Waves (Longest 70 minutes of my life, did not have likable characters and I just didn't care about the teen drama/love triangle)
Pom Poko (I did not like this film. It was visually weird at times and the tone was all over the place. Might be my least favorite film of theirs)
The Tale of the Princess Kugaya (I did not connect with the protagonist/message of the film. A little too out there for me)
One-Time Viewing Experience
Grave of the Fireflies (This movie is very well made and I appreciate it but it's way too depressing for me to rewatch)
Thanks for sharing - I especially like your assessment of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. The roughness really does add to it and it's one of the ones that I'm most looking forward to revisiting. It's really stuck with me.
Amazing video
Thank you bud, I hope you got some new recommendations out of it and that I did justice to your favorite
Very happy to hear it! Princess Kaguya was definitely a contender for top 10. Beautiful film.
Fantastic video!
Spirited Away -chef kiss- most amazing

Rank the pixar movies next!
Noted ;)
Where would you place The Boy And The Heron?
I wonder where would you put boy and the heron on this list
commenting to help you with algorithm
Princess Mononoke >>>>>>>>> Spirited Away
Now do Boy and the Heron
Poppy hill at 20 is criminal
Mind explaining how it’s worse than earwig? I find that movie to be a lot uglier that TCR
