    In this installment, we examine a turd brown PC-E that is in a non-functional issue. We'll attempt to repair this unit, and perform a thorough cosmetic restoration to the plastic housing.
    At 9:33 of the video, I didn't set the instrument to ohms or continuity. when I was probing the area and I found the break. I didn't need to, as I could tell by the behavior on the display that something was amiss. I just know all of the strange quirks of this particular multimeter. Sorry if that confused any of you as I didn't explain that.

    God bless you man... You took what would have probably ended up in a landfill and gave it life again. What is completely miraculous about this video is... you didn't restore some 1948 Tucker discovered in a barn in West Virginia... you restored a common piece of retro gaming trash nobody was going to miss. Even in great shape, these things only go for $40-50. In the state you received it, someone would struggle getting $5-10 for it and most likely would have ended up in the trash. What you have done, is you took that poor video game console soul and gave it a second life. Not for profit... just because you have a love for the tech enough to do something... and it was the right thing to do. There's going to be a day in the future where these things are almost extinct... and because there are Voultar's of the world... that day might come much much later. I admire what you do, I wish I knew how to do what you do, I wish I had the skills for what you do. I loved watching this... it really gave me the feelz. Great job... you've done a great civic duty of the retro video gaming community.

      I found a broken one for $50. Pce duo's are going for $200 to $250 broken as well so apparently it's the time to sell. I was going to buy a couple different systems to mod for myself assuming they were fairly cheap still. Was looking for a new hobby with practical uses. Guess I'll just take up gardening instead.

    Another video full of aesthetic pleasure. The only thing that bothered me was cleaning cases with IPA. For me it's more effective to plunge it in hot water with soap or washing detergent and then scrub it with a toothbrush, like you did, and some soft cloth. The gunk usually comes off much easier that way so you don't have to grind off layers of plastic with melamine sponge. Thanks man, I totally enjoyed the process.

      I too find that submerging the plastics in dish soap solution for a day will clean off smoking residue much better than alcohol scrubbing.

      Couldn't agree more, the hot water and soap makes the dirt go soft and comes off with a toothbrush really easy after that 99% of the time.

    • @alunaticbastard
      @alunaticbastard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      He is the Bob Ross of soldering! We're just gonna solder this happy little wire right here, and see it's just that simple!
      You don't need an engineering degree to do this stuff. You need to learn how to read schematics and practice the shit out of your fine pitch soldering work. I've been doing mods like this for decades and what I know I learned in high school. I keep my skills up by fixing dirt cheap swap meet junk.
      I actually love ripping out bad mods and making them right. I just wish I had all my PS, PS2 and XBOX mod crap still. Used to have tons of chips for all three systems but the ex got to keep all that stuff. I think more people need to gear up and start doing this stuff. It's really not that expensive to get everything you need for a hobbyist. Just buy a Hakko 888 and some hand tools and go to town!

    • @Chaos89P
      @Chaos89P 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      alunaticbastard is right. You don't need an engineering degree to do Bob Ross-level soldering work. You just need a few happy little tools you can get online and maybe an online video or two. Some schematics wouldn't hurt, either. I think most of the console modders/fixers are mostly hobbyists who may end up getting paid for their happy little work. Half the time, I've noticed, serious issues can be fixed in simple one/two-step processes.

      @@yar0nix224 on that note I would say please show us how to properly do it then. I have been soldering for 30 years, have done many more professional repairs than I choose to remember and don't see much wrong with his work. He is competent, thorough and precise enough to get the job done. Most people can't hit consecutive pins on an 80 pin package with a microscope without bridging half the side. I've seen him do it effortlessly without a scope on his videos with repeatable results. I would say that's good enough to be paid to do it.
      But I would still like to see that video of yours.

    Just finished my first recapping of a PC Engine CoreGrafx (the first of two and my first recapping of anything period). I accidentally bought two consoles from sendico, but thankfully both work. It was using Console5's Kit which included the caps for the jailbar fix. The only thing I messed up on was the big power capacitor on the right side of the mainboard. I accidentally ripped out a capacitor leg via, but a paper clip, revealing some copper and some solder fixed that problem. It is much better now with much higher quality sound and less noisy video signal. A bit of care and patience sure paid off. All my joints were clean. I'm amazed that if you take it slow and be patient I can do soldering much like you can. I used a japanese solder sucker (the engineer brand) with a silicone tube nozzle; which works better than all other solder suckers for through hole, but not as great as a desoldering station. I'm thanking my foresight to get that or else it would have taken far longer.

    Voultorbs method here for de-yellowing is by far the best. I did a few experiments with some really yellowed plastic. Firstly coating plastic with salon creme and leaving it out in the sun for 24 hours, and the other using the method that's shown in this video, coating the plastics in salon creme and then leaving it in a UV light flooded box. The first one was completely over-brightened and had ugly looking streaks of colour through it due to the uncontrolled intense heat of the sun. The uv light controlled method is almost perfect. Giving a result that is nearly exactly close to the original condition of the plastic. There is a chance that these plastics can go yellow again in only a few months after treatment though, but for now everything I've treated looks great. Thanks again Voultarb.

    Nice work! I picked one of these up with a Super SD System 3 last month and was only getting a white screen. I tried cleaning the pins and made sure they were all nice and straight but I still only got that white screen. Someone online said it was probably a problem with the motherboard, so I ended up sending it back to the seller in Japan and buying one with a expansion port cover. Working great now, loving these cd games!

    The voltage would still be 0 volt on that line, the ohm would be infinite, which would be the issue, measuring on the same point on the same line, will always return 0v

    • @Voultar
      @Voultar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      That's right. It would be 0v. But there was no connection, hence the craziness on the multi-meter. We could've set the instrument to either Ω or continuity, but the behavior on the display told us what we needed to know, that it wasn't connected!

    Very helpful how you went through your entire troubleshooting process even as the solution was physically visible! This can be applied to other electronics easily, thank you very much.
    I think you went a little too far with the magic eraser, though. A harder-bristled brush (they're available for specific applications, but nail brushes work perfectly) and letting the part immerse in hot, soapy water to loosen up the gunk tends to work very well for me.

    Looks good. I feel that thr best first cleaning step is a soak and a scrub in warm soapy water. Water and isopropyl alcohol are pretty different solvents and you might find yourself scrubbing like crazy with alcohol on something that would come right off in water. Plus the soak really helps loosen grime in corners etc.

    It would be awesome if the gentleman who sent you that wonderful machine, would do an unboxing video - It would be great to see his reaction.
    As for retrobrighing, I use cream and works better than hydrogen peroxide solution. I don’t swish it around like you, I pour and smear an equal level of cream all over my subject (mainly vintage Star Wars figures), but can understand about the blotching you mentioned.
    Oh, I was screaming at the phone when you were cleaning the console. You could have washed it in some soapy water, would have made easy work with that grime and dirt. That way you don’t damage the surface with the manic eraser.

    The correct way to deal with the initial cleaning is warm water + dish detergent, or even better warm water + denture tablets. The latter is standard practice for dealing with ABS keycaps on museum-quality keyboard restorations. There is also no need to combine mechanical and electrical with one repair. Epoxy to fix the jack mechanically in place + jumper wires to the next components on the rail would be a far more reasonable solution. With that said, good on you for fixing this console and making it look great again - anyone who does battle against "throw away culture" and popularizes repair is doing good.

    Excellent restoration work. For future reference, it's less heat that helps the deyellowing process and more UV radiation. Also one of the best things you can use for deyellowing is ozone gas.

      @sarmatiko 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. You can use Sous-Vide stick or something like BrewPI controlled container, without UV radiation at all. Stable temperature matters and results are much much better that retrobrighting on sun or with UV container. At least it was proven on keyboard restoration.

    I have even put old computer motherboards that came from industrial control in the dishwasher, they came out looking like brand new and sometimes that was all they needed to work again, and these were scary looking, like 486 with 20+ years of shop filth inside it! XD Turned into a really nice vintage PC just through cleaning and maintenance.

    How do you recommend cleaning the pin connector on the HuCard Interface? I get the feeling my PC Engine has had a dirty past and no longer plays nicely with the HuCards...

    Awesome using a component leg to replace a trace, I do this to broken little 1960's transistor radios and those boards are DELICATE! It works great and it's a solid durable fix. Also, a carbon fiber brush is much better and less abrasive to the underlying copper than the edge of your tweezer.

    If you want a more permanent retrobrite box solution, try getting a fishtank and using a mirror spraypaint. You can turn the inside of the fishtank into a pretty decent reflective surface.

      Morgan Mixer and spray the Outside of the fish tank for best results.

    • @JonnBenny
      @JonnBenny 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't spray inside the tank since you're going to be using the inside and it'll chip, spray the outside and then apply a clear coat to prevent scratches.

    • @RobertSzasz
      @RobertSzasz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonn Benny more than the chipping issue, the glass side will be way, way smoother.
      Thinking about it that might not be ideal. You want a surface that reflects as much light as possible, but is a diffuse reflector so the whole box is evenly illuminated.
      Perhaps something like bright white ceramic tile would be best?

    Had to do something similar to a SNES power supply recently. The entire board inside was cracked in half, one side just held on by a wire.

    after checking for input and output voltage you followed by continunity test without first disconnecting the power supply, if there had been some intermittent power there it could have damaged your multimeter as a lot of meters will fry when used on ohms/continunity if there is any voltage present.

    i just want to leave a tip i learned from a friend, you can clean those small crevices without messing with the plastic with a pencil eraser, i use those vinyl ones for most stuff and those hard eraser pencil(those which are a pencil but with a hard eraser in core instead of graphite) for the stuff, you just gotta rub the plastic with a cloth after to remove the residue
