  • LET’S REFURB THIS PC-ENGINE AND TEACH IT SOME NEW TRICKS! | HDMI, ODE, SHELL, CAPS and MORE!
    In today’s episode of Retro Renew, I’ll be refurbishing a tired and neglected PC-Engine home console. The PC-Engine was also known as the TurboGrafx-16 in North America and in my opinion is an under appreciated gem. Not only will I be refurbishing it, but I will also give it some modern features that will truly bring this console into the modern era!

    I was in the first wave of RGR shells and got one clear and one smoke. At first I, too, fought to thread the screw posts for external screws using both my iFixit GameBit and dedicated GameBit driver. I soon realized that you can thread the posts much more easily with the internal screws from the HuCard reader/slot. The thread pitch is the same so you can thread it with them, back them out, and effortlessly reuse the threads with the original GameBits (careful not to cut new threads!). The difference is that the internal screws are self-threading with a channel for plastic shavings to accumulate. When using them to cut the threads for the external screws I would occasionally back the screw out, remove the shavings, and continue a bit farther each time. My goal was to create perfectly straight threads without slipping even once and I accomplished it using this method.
    FWIW, early model PC Engines have standard Philips or JIS screws instead of GameBit for the exterior. Some also have a different shape around the controller port and a different corresponding design on the controller plug. I believe NEC was the first to use GameBit screws as even the NES wasn’t using them back then. This is why GameBit screws were originally called “NEC External Line Head” screws.

    I don't know if this channel has covered cleaning up, and restoring worn or damaged original parts, but I suggest anyone to consider looking into it. It's a good way to reduce and reuse something that just needs a little love and elbow grease.
    I love to see flashy new takes on old tech but I also love cleaning up a system back to it's former glory and giving new life to it's used parts. Just makes me feel good.

  • @SwellyTripleSeven
    @SwellyTripleSeven 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very top notch work. My only recommendation would be is when installing the screws in the bottom of the shell (or any new shell) screw in the screws a little bit, then back them out and do this several times. The reason it was hard to put the screws in is because there isn’t threads yet because it’s a new mold. You want to be extra careful when it comes to clear shells, cranking too hard could crack the plastic. Smoked plastic is much stronger than clear but still not as strong as regular plastic

    • @grafxgear
      @grafxgear 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MachoNachoProductions FYI the PC Engine controller uses the near exact same membranes as the Nintendo Famicom. They even have holes in the same positions to help line them up in the plastic housing. You do need to put a small notch into the D-pad membrane to help it clear one of the posts and the A & B buttons will have an extra loop to secure it to a post that exists in the NES but not the PC Engine. Otherwise, they function perfectly. The Famicom versions tend to be a little softer and the NES versions tend to be a little firmer. The only unfortunate part is the start and select buttons (Select Run) are too shallow to be used comfortably in the PC Engine controllers.

    I recently took a chance on buying a PC Engone. The seller claimed it didnt work, but after i plugged in my Saturn AV cable (it was modded to replace the RF port with a Saturn AV port) and plugged in my Turbo Everdrive......IT WORKS!
    And I found out why the seller claimed it didnt work. The RF switch is still installed. If the RF switch is set to the low channel, the AV port doesn't work. Hiwever, when the RF switch is set to the high channel, then the AV port works.
    And yes, it also has the jailbar fix.
    $57? Not too bad for a "broken" PC Engine.

    Very nice clean up of the console, something you might be interested in is replacing the Voltage regulator with a new more efficient OKI-78SR-5/1.5-W36HE-C. According to "RMC-The Cave" it is a drop in replacement and produces much less heat to the point you don't even need the heat shield anymore.

Its so embedded in there that yo need some tweezers or something to eject that microSD Card. I used a micro SD-card extender to make the microSD extender a bit more accessible. I guess you could also dremel out a little bit of the shell to gain better access to the micro SD slot.

    When I did the ips mod on my GBA, I bought a new shell and all the screw holes were so tight, that it took me all day putting it back together.
    I had to use the new screws and original ones bc either one would have it's head stripped from me trying to get it in.

    @russellsmith4738 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video, it amazing how before watching this I’ve already been through the exact same journey. Even down to deciding to replace the jail bar caps just because. However, I decided to use a Core Grafx because I read the revised processor fixed some kind of audio distortion? I assume that’s for the sound chip generated audio, not CD audio. Personally can’t tell the difference… but the blue of the core grafx sticker matches the blue of the super SD system nicely.
    The issue is the case has the cut-out for the RF socket of the white console, not the DIN socket of the core grafx. They do score a cut line for the DIN but I decided against cutting my expensive new case. I’m actually thinking of installing the small MD2 socket for the RGB modded output instead but there’s no rush. It would be really nice if they just made smoke core grafx cases!!!
    Yes the PCE is easily emulated but for multiplayer, I’ve not had success with retro pi playing 5 player games. So options are Analogue’s fpga Duo, that will only support 4 controllers which is a deal breaker for me. I asked them if you can have 1 wired and 4 wireless and they said no? Then there’s the Konami mini’s but the hack for the mini doesn’t seem to have come to anything so you won’t be able to add all these great games and has anyone tried the mini usb multi tap with 5 x 8bitdo usb receivers, they fit without extenders… I have 5 official PCE ir controllers and they’re great (so long as you don’t need to control the TV while the console is on)
    The Turbo Everdrive is absolutely worth keeping for use in the GT (or if you have an LT or Express).
    Final point with the SD system 3, only the Pro version has the Supergrafx hardware on the fpga. This now leaves me thinking I should sell my Supergrafx but wouldn’t it would be strange to keep the games without having the system? Just so I can legally have the ROMs…

      There are a few games where you can tell such as Doraemon: Meikyū Daisakusen. The thing is developers had already been working around this problem so it broke compatibility with older games. Ultimately NEC reverted the change for the later pc engines and Duo systems... So most games are made with the non revised chipset in mind.

    That is a really nice kit, but for that price one could be well into the price of a MiSTer. Which, as most know at this point, can accurately replicate all of those PC Engine add-ons and so much more. I suppose it boils down to a matter of opinion on what you’d rather invest in to play all the great games in the PC Engine / CD / Supergrafx family. I digress, this was a great video, thanks for the upload!

    The reason for the Turbografx-16's failure in America seems crystal clear to me. The bulk of its library was comprised of arcade games that didn't catch on here in the States and titles tailored to a Japanese audience. Plus you had Johnny Turbo, the failed mascot for the system's successor, the TurboDuo. There were other factors- the marketing that was so successful in a tiny island nation like Japan didn't work so well in a country many times its size- but in my view, it was the software which failed the TG16.
    Anyway. This was a well documented and thorough mod, as I've come to expect from you. My only question is this... what happened to that TurboDuo clone that was planned for release a year ago? It was supposed to cost $250, but it just seemed to vanished after it was announced. It was supposed to play CD-ROMs and everything!

      By Jess! Yes, I believe Analogue was going to make an FPGA based turbo duo which looked really cool! I think with the chip shortage and everything it got delayed😅. Would be nice if it came out next year 👍

      I think marketing more than anything. That and the Genesis as I and many others choose team Sega over the TG16 at the time. However, ultimately I think parents are to blame! If they just got their kids all the systems then everybody would win! ^_^

      IMO the clear shell pairs better with he TO SHDS3P. However it is possible to swap the shell of the SHDS3P with the SSDS3 and just print a back plate to match the IO of the SHDS3P. That would mean you need a SSDS3 to swap with so yeah... prohibitive, unless you already own an SSDS3.

      I would first test the voltage regulator. make sure it it putting out the proper voltage. there is also a little glass diode near the voltage regulator (it was replaced with a modern diode one in later models) Just make sure it isn't shortage. If all that checks out it is almost certainly the capacitors. All of those things can be replaced.

So you see why I didn't get a turbographx 16. I forgot I got a portable segacd also and played it at school in my truck during lunch when I was 16.
