The hairy bits on the shell are coir (koi- yur). The fibers have many uses, and are great for potting orchids and other plants that can't tolerate wet roots. If you follow Tanner on Serpae Designs, he glues this to the backgrounds or onto ropes, after it is ground up a bit. Please excuse my enthusiasm for the use of coir in our hobby!!

    Firstly good build.
From the point of view of a coconut muncher.
1, the knuckle bits you mention breaking. One of the three is soft, a pocket knife will ' drill' this out and allow the draining of the milk.
2, drop the coconut on the floor- aiming for its equator. It makes a satisfying noise and will split the nut fairly well into two equal parts. The flesh will stay clean rather than covered in sawdust.
3, working from the rim down in to the bottom of the 'bowl' with your pocket knife cut squares and then put the blade between the shell and flesh and pop out bite-sized pieces of yummy nut.
The reason you use your pocket knife is because the odd piece will pop out and fly across the room and mothers, girlfriends and wives all seem to find this unacceptable resulting in banishment.
So, you'll end up outside or in your cave and will need your pocket knife to finish your treat off.
Do not even think of taking a kitchen knife out with you- it just ain't worth it.
