Cheap and Easy Aquarium Decoration

- Aquarium decorations can be expensive and aren't customized to your own aquarium. Today I am sharing with you all how to make an Underwater Cave that cost me only $20 and that can be scaled up or down depending on the size of your tank. It is also super cool to be able to look into the cave and see fish that you normally wouldn't see hiding or just living life.
Building aquarium decorations takes a little bit of time but you can customize what you make to your fish tank and the fish tank decorations can blend in just as well as your other decorations. You can make seamless fishtank decorations with your aquascaping rocks or with local river rock.
Get creative and have fun making a one of a kind DIY aquarium decoration. As no two will every be exactly alike everyone coming over and seeing your homemade aquarium decorations will be in awe of what you made.
In this build I utilized sandstone from a local quarry, but that is not the only type of rock that you could use for this project. You could use typical aquarium rocks sold in store, you could use slate, sandstone, and granite without having it affect your pH. If you already have high pH and don't mind rocks that will release carbonates and hardiness into your tank, the world is your oyster. Just exercise some caution and do some research before choosing your rocks. And when you actually start attaching your rocks together you want them to be relatively clean of debris, meaning a goos rinse, and they need to be dry in order for the adhesives to stick to them well.
As for the adhesives that I used in this build, I utilized the Flex Glue because it holds the rocks together really well, which I tested before using it and you should as well, and have not seen any issues with using it in my other tanks for other projects. I have used it in my breeding tank for CPDs and haven't had any issues. I also utilized the Great Stuff Cracks and stuff because I needed to fill in the gaps between rocks and needed control so I wanted a smaller nozzle for application. I am sure you could utilize any number of other adhesives including silicone or super glue, but I have not used those directly so I can not say you will end up with the same results. These were what I had on hand and had used previously, you might have other adhesives that you like better and you are more than welcome to use them, again, I just can't say with what success you will have as I have not used them.

@TheAquariumLibrary how did you find out if the Flex Glue and Gaps & Cracks was fish, snail and shrimp safe?
I really do love caves in my tanks. Many fish species absolutely love the enclosed feeling of security or peaceful hide, while others completely ignore, usually because they are mid/top column swimmers. Neons and catfish are especially fond along with some zebras and pretty much any loaches. Really does add a little bit of magic and a whole bunch of interest to your tanks. And of course the first place my kids want to search for our fish. Seeing a serpae tetra emerging from a cave is 10x cooler than seeing my pearl Gouramis from across the room hahaha. Never really thought of a cave as you set up on this video. Definitely will be a fun project coming up. Thanks so much!

I hope it works out well for you George! You could also use super glue and cotton to stick the rocks together but I’d rather have something a little stronger. Do you have any idea what you are going to stock it with?

Yeah with my stones that I had it would have been more difficult to accomplish that type of design. So I adapted it to what I had. If I had dragon stone or some other lighter stone I definitely could try that. But the cost to do it with dragon stone is just a lot more than my quarry sandstone.

I think you could totally make something for a guppy tank and have it be successfully. Basically just a 3D arts and craft project with glue. But there is no teaching telling you that you did a bad job. Just a bunch or random people online... Typing that out now I don’t know which one is worse lol

It is a new tank that I got that will be set up with fish that my wife likes and wants to have around.

She likes the expensive fish, like rainbows and discus to name a few, but she also likes the super red plecos so it could go a very many different ways.
Can you use river rocks?
Yes I think you could. Would be a little more difficult to stack them but wouldn’t be impossible by any stretch of imagination. I had considered doing local river rock but wanted something that would stack better.

The only concern with that cave is that it could become a dead spot
No twin. I just shaved 😂
That is a valid concern but with how I ended up doing it there is a gap along the entire side that touches the wall. I have hang on back filter right above that so it should move water through there no problem. Will mulm accumulate there? Probably. Am I concerned about that long term? Not really.
I recently got a 280lb lava rock for $20. it was not easy to load.... LoL ...it's an addiction..

@@TheAquariumLibrary to be honest none yet I'm still gathering hard scape for an 80 gallon heavily planted and scaped set-up with 2 canister filters 3, 100 watt LED floodlights ...I think the fish will be cpd's , Pseudomagil luminatis , guppies and a huge cleanup crew
Ohh that will be an interesting tank for sure with a massive amount of lighting. How deep is the tank?
How many CPDs and rainbows are you trying for? Also if you have seen the blue star endlers you should check them out. I think they rival any guppy.
