How To Save Money on Aquarium Fish Caves

  • Hello Fellow Fish Keepers!
In this video we talk about how and where to find cheap caves for your fish. Lots of fish like to hide and breed in caves. While PVC is always and option, it doesn't look that good and buying caves at a petstore can get expensive. Here we present a happy medium.

Ive got small terra-cotta plant pots in my tank, I like the different sizes, mixes things up a little in my community tank, tbh I wasn’t all that gung-ho about it at first just got one, but it sold me when I seen fish actually using it as a hiding place, now I have a selection of pot sizes

    Nice idea!
One of the reasons I find this Channel appealing is the mix of information and common sense information the average person can comprehend.
I may never have had those species of fish, but I can understand saving money. 🙂
    Thanks again,

We just went to our local landscape company/ nursery and got some bigger river rocks and stacked 3 up in a triangle for our blue crawfish. Spent maybe 10 bucks for 10 big rocks. We also got 2 small bags of rocks from Wal-Mart and glued them together to make 2 different caves. Our plecos find all kinds of places to hide out in their tank. The crawfish end up digging under the rocks and tryin to make their own caves. I have a video of our tanks on my channel, nothing fancy

Been using these for a few years now after stumbling across them while just scrolling through Ebay searching for terracotta stuff i could use in a fish tank , they work really well and ive had great success with breeding bristlenose using them , however i do find they can be a bit on the small side for some of my larger pairs and on a few occasions the males have thrown the eggs out of the cave ,
Another thing i found that works great for larger fish are terracotta wine rack pieces , they can come in single tubes or up to 3 cylinders stuck together and like the water spike they have flat sides so dont roll around the tank to much

My background for my super red Bristlenose tank is literally a wall of these put together with some silicone. I have pulled several hundreds of plecos from this tank. If you are concerned about it's appearance, you can also attach moss or place tall plants such as Vallisneria in front of the caves to block them from view. Overall, these caves are great!

I use those. To hide them, I silicone whatever substrate is in the tank to the outside. Or small rocks could be used.

Hi! Do you think these would be big enough for a yellow labidochromis? I think I have a male and female. There is a bit of chasing going on. I could always build a cave from the extra petrified wood I snagged at Lowes but this looks a bit more solid. Thanks!

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics

They would be too small. For them the terracotta pots would work better for caves.

I went to the dollar store and got some $1 round glass vase for my fish tank and axolotl tank and they loved it, but I felt like the closed cave prevent water circulation, lot of waste get trap inside and made the water very cloudy eventually. Wouldn't what you recommend cause that problem?

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Fish can use their tail fins to remove any waste (thinking more like plecos) that accumulates. When I pick up the caves to move them or remove them from the tank I don't usually see a lot of waste.

Has anyone ever tried brushing glue onto a plastic or terracotta pot and rolling it in sand?
Same sand as tank substrate, basically creating a subtle cave which can be partially buried 🤔
