    READ, READ, READ (Real Education Always Delights!)
    Thanks Anthony for this discussion of Bruno. I consider Bruno to be the first master of Semiotics because of his clever methods and philosophies with regard to imagery, memory and meaning.
    He was determined to be a gadfly to his religious community and to the political principalities and powers of his world. He paid dearly for his passion, and he went to the stake in 1600, likely more for standing by his principles than for causing grievous offence to the Church or the Venetian Inquisition. In that, he reminds me of Socrates, who would rather obey Ideals than man.
    Please tell us more of your learning on this lesser-known philosopher and spiritual mnemonist, when you have a chance.
    Best regards.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for this, J A. I hadn't thought of Bruno in the context of semiotics, but I think I see where you're going with that. Interesting angle.
      His whole path to the stake is an interesting and puzzling one, but I think Socrates is indeed a good model for how he wound up there. One can only imagine.
      More on Bruno coming soon. I'm putting together a course for those in the MMM Mastermind as we speak.
      Thanks as ever for your comments and yes - Real Education (Does) Always Delight! Another good one! :)

    It was James Joyce who introduced be to Bruno. He is a key figure in "Finnegans Wake" (mentioned over 100 times, more than any other philosopher). A young Joyce wrote a review of McIntyre's book on Bruno. As a fluent Latin and Italian speaker, Joyce could read the Nolan in the original. This edition looks beautiful. It's quite expensive (especially when the shipping to Dublin is included), but you've persuaded me to take the plunge.

    Very glad you liked the book! I agree, they did a great job in crafting it. I heard about plans for this translation years ago, and I was really looking forward to it, as JMG usually clears up some confusing elements in these obscure texts, both in the language he chooses for his translations and the clues he leaves behind in his introductions & afterwords. I think he would be a great guest for your podcast, he is a long-time practitioner of the Art of Memory, and has a lot of unique thoughts on its importance in modern times - in some of his books, he has called our modern culture a "prosthetic society", where we amputate normal human capabilities and then sell them back as electronic products - he usually cites memorization techniques as a means to reverse this trend. I actually first came across JMG through his introductions to the Art of Memory:
    aoda.org/Articles/Ars_Memorativa.html
    aoda.org/Articles/Ars_Memorativa_2.html

      Thanks for your comment, Daniel, and for these links. Much appreciated.
      I'm already making moves to speak with the translator on the podcast, and even imagine getting him together with Scott Gosnell for a discussion too.
      There is much to this "prosthetic society" concept, one I refer to myself related to the Digital Amnesia issues. I'm not sure if you've seen it, but it certainly touched a nerve:
      www.magneticmemorymethod.com/digital-amnesia/
      I believe it is still the most shared post and podcast on the Magnetic Memory Method site.
      Memory training is indeed a great antidote and I thank you for participating in the conversation. Let's keep it rolling!

      Anthony Metivier Oh a collaboration with Scott Gosnell & JMG would be great! I'd also be interested to hear JMG's take on Lynne Kelly's work - I sent JMG a copy of The Memory Code earlier this year, I don't know what he made of it yet

      Bruno was from the town of Nola, near Naples. He called himself "Il Nolano", the Nolan. Any association with Christopher Nolan (none of whose movies I have ever seen) is unintentional.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's more than that. Nola is possibly where he first considered the idea of infinite worlds. Groundbreaking stuff, and again, I sense the possibility of a link with Vedanta. It's not clear what texts from that tradition might have been in the area, but I would not be surprised, especially given things he says in his memory writings.
      As for Christopher Nolan, Inception is perhaps the most memory-related of his films, but Interstellar is definitely Nolan in the Bruno sense of the word. :)
