  • Visual memory techniques involve an ironic twist...
    One that many people who teach the art of memory fail to teach you.
    Never fear. Dr. Metivier is here.
    Learn these two hacks and you will instantly get more out of the visual memory techniques you use.
    The first hack is something I've been using for years to learn faster and remember more. Sadly, a lot of people are missing out on it due to the tools used in contemporary culture.
    The second hack is counterintuitive.

    I am in medical school in Europe which still uses the Austro-Hungarian schooling method, which unfortunately doesn't consist of deep learning/understanding as its based on pure memorization of lots of systematized information. I had good results when it came to learning about physiological processes, as my baseline memory capacity is sufficient for interconnected and dynamic information, but had trouble with pathology since it was a systematized collection of disease, genetic markers, histological properties, etc.
    Applying the MP technique turned the "static" information into "dynamic" for me, which allowed me to pass the strict exams and made it both fun and efficient, which in turn has made me a happier person (less stress and self doubt) and more confident.
    Wanted to say thanks for introducing me to these concepts with such enthusiasm because in the end thats what made me want to try it!

      @@AnthonyMetivierMMMI was wondering if its feasible to build a palace "ab ovo" where the locations themselves integrally contain information specific for the mnemonic one wishes to place there? To give an example, for Sjogren syndrome (only affects the glands in the face) I used a bust of Hippocrates in my university as the place to store the information for it. This has made it more accessible/quicker to access in my memory, however I noticed that the mnemonics mustn't fit too well into the physical place since then they don't stand out. Im not sure if it would be too much effort to make sense. This was an interesting thought experiment for me, I apologize if its not relevant.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I haven't heard of an approach I would describe as "ab ovo" as such. But Bruno does discuss the possibility of nesting, though it is not known to which extent he actually used it or merely conceptualized it.
      There's some thoughts on this here:
      th-cam.com/video/NcM3VBdlIvc/w-d-xo.html
      For myself, I prefer a much more direct method. Sjogren has an S so would go in an S Memory Palace and then this form of spaced repetition would be used so I'm much less likely to forget it:
      th-cam.com/video/2CthE_Napjg/w-d-xo.html
      Using traditional Memory Palaces also helps the images stand out, but I find that the key is not only in well-formed Memory Palaces but also in alphabetical image selection with specific elaboration tactics like KAVE COGS.
      But there are many ways to proceed and I always encourage personal experimentation. It's ultimately the only way to know.

    Hey Anthony, have you checked out the Mandarin Blueprint Method? I'd honestly be shocked if you haven't, since taking their course is how I learned about you in the first place (they mention you in their course, and if I'm not mistaken even use you as an actor in their memory palaces)... Anyway they have an excellent pronunciation course that I think could really help you. And then their huge blueprint course would be right up your street, because it's all about learning the language with memory palaces to learn the characters and then using that reading skill for input. It's expensive but well worth it!

      Yes, and Phil was on the channel a while ago:
      th-cam.com/video/xJOuWDnhpRc/w-d-xo.html
      As good as I find their materials to be, I haven't found it useful for pronunciation.
      The weirdest thing: My wife has a much higher standard for my pronunciation than her parents do. They always seem to understand me, but she, for whatever reason does not.
      In any case, as many people seem in a rush to point out over the years, I don't even have proper English pronunciation. Some of the comments I've gotten are pretty hilarious... and in Germany I always have to use the word Rechnung instead of Quittung because for whatever reason, Quittung doesn't come out just right.
      I really don't know the solution to it, except that I personally know the many damages that both my ears and mouth have suffered over the years. Many of my teeth were removed followed an accident and my left ear drum is perforated. I do the best I can with this machine, but haven't found either a mechanical or a mnemonic solution to improving.
      Thanks for taking the time to mention them though. I should try to reconnect with them!

      @@AnthonyMetivierMMM Thanks for pointing me to your interview with Phil. I've watched lots of your videos now but I must have missed that one.
      It's funny how your wife's parents can understand your Chinese better than your wife can. I think there could be several explanations for that. I'm engaged to a Chinese girl whose parents don't speak fluent Mandarin (they speak their local dialect and their extremely local dialect), so they also have to struggle when they speak standard Mandarin. I don't know if that's the case for your wife's parents, but if they also speak a local dialect then it's possible that they can understand you better because they're meeting you in the non-native speaking zone. There have been studies on how some non-native speakers of English with totally different mother tongues can actually better understand each other's English than they do a native English speaker. I've always found that fascinating. Another explanation is of course that your wife has higher expectations of you than her parents do-not only because of your particular background, but also because she's a generation younger than her parents, and so her parents may find it amazing that you speak Mandarin at all. Or who knows, maybe it's because her parents have the life experience of raising a child who at one point also needed to learn Mandarin, haha...
      Sorry to hear about your accident and injuries. My teeth have abnormalities as well-my upper canines naturally grew in way too far back, and so I mold my own artificial canines to wear in public. But your English pronunciation honestly sounds fine. From my long experience of struggling with Chinese tones and a few other aspects of Chinese pronunciation, I can honestly say that the Mandarin Blueprint's Pronunciation Course was the best help I ever had (and that was after more than a decade of trying to speak Chinese). I made myself start all over again so that I could break the bad pronunciation habits I'd internalized long ago. Of course I felt silly practicing single syllables over and over again after having been communicating in semi-intermediate Chinese for years, but I really think that Chinese is one of those languages/skills where the foundation is so critical that if you try to speak based on shaky ground it all comes collapsing down.
      By the way, my fiancée is also a German teacher, so when she gets home I'll ask her about those words you referenced! 😄

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for these thoughts.
      My wife's parents are both fluent in Mandarin, so I don't think it's that. Certainly, they have lower expectations, though, and have generally been impressed that I bother to work on the language at all.
      At the end of the day, I'm quite happy with my progress in it, but not having been back to China for a very long time and with no plans to visit, I satisfy myself with my Tao Te Ching project and what I'm doing to build my Sanskrit, Latin and maintain the basic level of German I acquired while I live there.
      Definitely agree with all kudos to Mandarin Blueprint, though. Well worth boosting.

    Hey Anthony, a question just came to mind when thinking. On your masterclass, I recall you mentioning taxi drivers and how they have an enlarged brain region relating to spatial processing. Are you aware of any studies on if this helps them in memory palace usage? In other words, does that carry over to better being able to recall objects placed in their mind? If so, do you think driving or doing other activities that exercise spatial placement in the real world would be beneficial to a memory trainer?

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for this question.
      Studies I've seen show that they've grown the hippocampus. There are also studies about their verbal recall that I've seen in terms of speaking the routes out loud.
      What I haven't seen are studies in transfer effects, and I would predict that they have developed on the main context-dependent memory skills, in the same way that a person who reads a lot would tend to enjoy context-dependent memory boosts within a topic area.
      In any case, I would ask different questions than the studies I've seen, but you can search specifically for "The Knowledge" and other keywords like near-transfer, context-dependent memory and state-dependent memory. There doesn't seem to be any more recent material than what I've already read, but it's out there. With a budget, I'd get even more going to ask some of the transfer effect questions I have.

      @@AnthonyMetivierMMM Except for my pins, keys, usernames and 'passphrases', I'm not memorizing 'anything' (and beat myself up everytime I'm reminded of that fact!) I need an epiphany, a 'reason' to be passionate about committing to and retrieving from memory - 'something'... useful and worthwhile. Apart from recalling 'stuff' from memory for school exams; the test for road rules and signs for a drivers licence; jokes, lyrics, poems, and anthems etc., all of which 'happened' last century... I can see (with the 20/20 vision of hindsight) how your MMM would have 'altered' my life's trajectory... I hope it is not too late to find that 'something' to memorise and be passionate about.

    For workbooks, can you consider a version that uses less ink? A thick black header, for example, looks sharp, but a 30 page workbook with one on each page, that's alot of ink for home printing and it isn’t even an image, just a black ink rectangle.

      True, I need to get that redone. I'll see if I can get the original files from the creator. Although I did want them to be printable, I thought most people would probably use the type-able PDF format or recreate the basic idea by hand in a notebook.

      To understand how to this I suggest learning the Magnetic Memory Method from top to bottom, not expecting one video to cover it.
      There are 5 mnemonic systems you'll want to combine for the best possible success. And it may involve changing the notion that information is "turned" into images. You might like to rewatch this video on visual memory techniques to better understand that and start succeeding with what you already know immediately.
