I get it though. His mom's Japanese. I grew up with a German-Italian mom and we spoke only German at home for the hitherto longest part of my life. Now when I speak Italian, I feel embarrassed because I feel like my Italian is no good. Yes of course I can talk to people in Italian, yes of course I can read books in Italian et cetera, but I'm not on a native speaker level although my family is half Italian. And I'm guessing that's just how he feels
I think learning through conversation with his mom from a young age means that pronunciation and inflection, the part that lends itself to the "natural sound" is what comes easiest, to the point that when speaking simple sentences he can sound 100% perfect.
You should come to Southern California. There are so many hafus here but we call them “hapa”, a Hawaiian term for mixed ancestry. I have personally known half Black, Mexican, Chinese, Korean, Irish, Italian, Polish etc.

I get it though. His mom's Japanese. I grew up with a German-Italian mom and we spoke only German at home for the hitherto longest part of my life. Now when I speak Italian, I feel embarrassed because I feel like my Italian is no good. Yes of course I can talk to people in Italian, yes of course I can read books in Italian et cetera, but I'm not on a native speaker level although my family is half Italian. And I'm guessing that's just how he feels
I think learning through conversation with his mom from a young age means that pronunciation and inflection, the part that lends itself to the "natural sound" is what comes easiest, to the point that when speaking simple sentences he can sound 100% perfect.
The only word i know in japanese is 'arrigato' which simply shows i am not japanese. 😁

You should come to Southern California. There are so many hafus here but we call them “hapa”, a Hawaiian term for mixed ancestry. I have personally known half Black, Mexican, Chinese, Korean, Irish, Italian, Polish etc.

He's adorable. He reminds me of my gorgeous 13 year old grandson who is half Chinese and half Danish. He has similar European features but is undeniably Asian. Eurasians are always stunning!
